Over 300 jewels with an estimated price for all tastes: from $ 3,000 to $ 200,000. In New York on October 17, Sotheby’s presents the largest auction of jewel of autumn. In the catalog there are vintage and contemporary jewelry signed by the most famous brands such as Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier, but also 1950’s design pieces by Trabert & Hoeffer-Mauboussin and Marianne Ostier. There are also classic white diamonds and rings of colored stones of different shapes and sizes.
But these are not the only reasons to call the appointment. In December 2012 Sotheby auctioned a collection of Magnificent jewels from the collections of Estée Lauder and Evelyn H. Lauder, founder and heiress of the big cosmetics company. The sale was organized in favor of the Breast Breastfeeding Foundation, the most authoritative Breast Cancer Organization in the United States and culminated in the sale of an elegant Fancy Intense Pink Diamond Ring from Evelyn H. Lauder’s collection, founder of BCRF. The ring was sold for 8.6 million, donated for research.
Five years later, Sotheby is “honored” to present the jewels of the collection of Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer, Estee’s grandson, whose proceeds will continue to benefit from the BCRF. Among the jewels is a ring signed by David Webb, with rock crystals and diamonds, and a diamond ring with diamonds by Van Cleef & Arpels. Federico Graglia

Hong Kong Tutti Frutti

Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong with Magnificent Jewels by Cartier, Jar and Van Cleef & Arpels ♦ ︎
The Magnificent Jewels return, this time with the addition of jadeite. The jade, in fact, can not miss a jewelry auction in Hong Kong and Sotheby’s takes into account the preferences of its customers in Asia. But, of course, the sale scheduled on October 3 does not only include jewelery made in jade. There are also pieces of exceptional interest, such as a rare Cartier Art Deco bracelet, of the Tutti Frutti series: it is valued at between 1.35 and 1.79 million dollars.
For collectors is a Jar-signed ring, an eclectic jewelry artist. This is a ruby ring of 8.49 carats: a big stone, although the jewel has no design that can be attributed immediately to the creativity of Joel Arthur Rosenthal. It may have more impact the parure by Cleef & Arpels, with diamonds and emeralds: rings, earrings, and necklace will be sell with an estimated $ 2 to $ 3 million, but it would not be surprising if this rating was overcome. The Biennale of high jewelery

In Paris the Biennale des Antiquaires is back with great jewels ♦ ︎
In Paris, at the Grand Palais, the Biennale des Antiquaires (11-17 September) is back. It follows the fair, a bit debated, of 2016. And more, it is still called Biennale, but it was decided that this year will be held every year: who knows if it will change its name. He has certainly changed president: he chose an American, Christopher Forbes, vice president of the publishing house and big collector. In addition, an independent expert committee, called to verify the authenticity of the pieces on display (some fake had caused a scandal last year) was introduced.
In short, the great fair founded in 1959 by André Malraux, novelist and French minister at Culture, changes. But at the same time it remains the same: this year there will be 94 exhibitors with proposals ranging from antiques, Renaissance paintings to Pop art, from watches to jewels. The latter category, for fans, is divided into vintage jewels, with pieces by Maisons as Van Cleef & Arpels or Cartier, and high jewelery with few selected brands: Boghossian, Glenn Spiro, Anna Hu, Moussaieff Jewelers, Nirav Modi. Marina B. sold to Guy Bedarida

Marina B. has a new owner: Guy Bedarida. The relaunch is scheduled and a store will be open in Italy ♦ ︎
The Italian brand Marina B. was founded by Marina Bulgari, the third generation of the Bulgari family. Now, however, B. from now will also be the initial letter of Bedarita, former creative director of John Hardy from 1998 to 2015, who bought the Italian Maison. Guy Bedarida is a expert jeweler and has also worked for Van Cleef & Arpels and Boucheron. He bought the majority stake of Marina B. He will also be the creative director of Marina B. and will replace Giorgio Bulgari, niece of Marina. To sell the brand is the owner of the Maison, Paul Lubetsky, CEO of Windsor Jewelers.
Marina Bulgari founded its jewelery brand in 1978. The style was characterized by the use of gold and enamelled black inlay with precious stones mounted on steel or black gold, by triangular shape and gems heart cut. The founder had sold her brand in 1999 to Saudi Arabian Sheikh Jeddah, Ahmed Fitaihi, who in 2010 sold Marine B. to Lubetsky. Windsor Jewelers will, however, retain a minority stake. Bedarida’s goal will be to upgrade the classic Marina B. models, as there are about 12,000 sketches and drawings in the archive. Maison’s jewelry prices vary from 8,000 to 3 million dollars. Another novelty: a flagship store will be opened in Italy. Federico Graglia

Michele della Valle, successful in Geneva

Success for Michele della Valle’s jewelry at Sotheby’s auction in Geneva ♦
They say art is a luxury that is not recognized to much. But selling of Sotheby’s Fine Jewels, which was held in Geneva, testifies that those who have artistic talent will receive the merited consensus. This is particularly the case with one of the best international designers, the Italian Michele della Valle. Sotheby’s had collected 82 jewels of exceptional virtuosity, which for Valle is the standard quality. And the result was right to the auction house: 98% of jewelery was sold, for a total of $ 1.3 million, ie almost three times the base estimate of the lots. A result of great importance and well deserved. It is a sign that you do not need to bet just on big collectors of diamonds like coconuts and with imaginative names to attract those who appreciate the art of jewelery.
In total, the Fine Jewels auction totaled $ 5.3 million, with 86.5% of the sold lots. Well sold also jewels by great Maison, including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Bulgari. Federico Graglia

Rising Sun for Van Cleef & Arpels

Van Cleef & Arpels and the masterpieces of Japanese handicrafts in a exhibition in Kyoto ♦
In the West, jewelery is often relegated to minor arts. It’s art yes, but cousin of the True Art, that of paintings and sculptures. In the Orient, instead, decorative arts, including jewelery, but also furniture or weaving, are works of art tout court. This philosophy turned into an exhibition organized in Kyoto, the Japan’s old capital, dedicated to Van Cleef & Arpels. Indeed, the French Maison is compared to Japanese artwork.

The idea is original. Van Cleef & Arpels is known for its unique style and technical excellence. It was founded in 1895 by Alfred Van Cleef, who married the daughter of a precious stone merchant, Esther (Estelle) Arpels. In 1906, Van Cleef & Arpels was established in Place Vendôme and since then has marked jewelery milestones.
In 1925, for example, a Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet wins to the International Exhibition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts in Paris. In the 1930s, Maison introduced the Minaudière, a special evening bag and got the patent for its Mystery Set, a unique technique that allows you to set precious stones without visible griffes. There are also the Zip necklace, the Alhambra collection, the famous Ballerinas, the high jewelery. In short, between technical innovation and artistic skill, Van Cleef & Arpels is something more than a jewelery company.
An artisan skill that in Japan was blooming at the end of the Meiji period (1868-1912), with the emergence of Japanese artisans who emphasized the originality and were considered artists. The Kyoto exhibition encourages visitors to compare about one hundred jewels of Van Cleef & Arpels with about 50 equally sublime examples of Japanese handicrafts, including cloisonné enamels, ceramics, lacquers and metal objects. But also of contemporary Japanese craftsmen such as Moriguchi Kunihiko, a yuzen dye master, Kitamura Takeshi, an important weave artist, raca tatenishiki, Nakagawa Kiyotsugu, Hattori Shunsho, Miwa Kyusetsu XII (Miwa Ryosaku).

Record earrings of 57.4 million

A pair of blue diamonds and a rose sold by Sotheby’s for a record $ 57.4 million. And it is also a record for a Piaget ring ♦
A mythological record. To mark a new star price for jewels were Apollo and Artemide. No, they are not the gods of Olympus, but divinity of jewelery: Apollo and Artemis enchanted the sale of Sotheby Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels in Geneva. The two diamonds got the best price ever on auction for a pair of earrings: $ 57.4 million. The buyer (for now anonymous) has subsequently renamed them. The fancy vivid blue diamond is now called The Memory of Autumn Leaves, while the intense pink fancy has been named The Dream of Autumn Leaves.

Siamese brothers
A pretty expensive poem. The two diamonds were sold separately. The vivid blue fancy, 14.54 carats, for 42 million, while the pink diamonds, 16 carats, for 15, 4 million. «It has been a privilege for Sotheby’s to be entrusted with the superb Apollo Blue and Artemis Pink, which have now been renamed The Memory of Autumn Leaves and The Dream of Autumn Leaves», commented David Bennett, world president of the international jewelery department and chairman of Sotheby’s Switzerland. «The results from today’s sale – which saw more than 90 per cent of lots sold and three new world auction records – yet again underline the strong demand for top quality diamonds, gemstones and jewels. I am delighted that the stones will remain together as earrings. This has been a wonderful inaugural jewellery sale at Mandarin Oriental, Geneva which far exceeded expectations, with a total of over $150 million. We are greatly looking forward to the upcoming auction of Fine Jewels at Sotheby’s rue Diday in Geneva on the 1st of June».
The purple color
As mentioned by Bennet, in fact, the auction marked a third record. An intense purplish pink fancy, 7.04-carat yellow, mounted on a Piaget ring, was awarded for $ 13.3 million, with a price tag of 1.9 million.
Lots 272 – 326 were also highly appreciated, including a private collection with precious pieces and gems of great value: they were sold for 15.9 million double the estimate. 96% of these lots were sold. A 32.42-carat-shaped pear-shaped Harry Winston diamond doubled its estimate and was sold for $ 3.3 million. An emerald ring, always of Harry Winston, has quadrupled its estimate to $ 929,465. A brooch with rubies and diamond sets and a pair of Van Cleef & Arpels clip earrings totaled $ 477,551. Federico Graglia

Anna Hu crowned by Christie’s

Anna Hu in exhibition at Christie’s, it’s the top of her fast career fast as a light (of genius) ♦
Everybody know she is one of the stars of the world jewelery. But few would have guessed that Anna Hu would be the first contemporary designer to be invited by Christie’s to exhibit in her new hall at St James in London. A selection of his refined jewels, which are considered artworks, were on display for five days. On the other hand, in addition to incredible architectures with gemstones, the jewels of Anna Hu often inspire paintings and sculptures. In short, in many cases they are a kind of meta-art, that is art of art.
Anna Hu was born in Taiwan in 1977, but since childhood she has travels the world together with her father, a merchant of precious and rare gems. Curiously, however, she began her artistic fortune as a cellist: she even won several prizes, but a shoulder injury forced her to stop. Luckily, you could add. She then took the jewelery road. After the Gia, she placed in the drawer two academic titles related to jewelery from Parsons School of Design and Columbia University. A sort of record.
She worked at Christie’s, Van Cleef and Arpels, and Harry Winston. Then, she opened her exclusive jewelery boutique in December 2008, just 29 years old, at the New York Plaza Hotel. She create about than 30 exclusive Haute Jewelery pieces per year for lucky (and wealthy) collectors. In short, she has already achieved success. But in reality her career is still to be written. Van Cleef & Arpels wins the heart

At Christie’s, Van Cleef & Arpels diamond beats the heart shaped diamond. Here are the results of the Magnificent Jewels auction ♦
Christie’s closes the Magnificent Jewels auction in New York with a result of $ 35.2 million, with 90% of the sold lots and 85% in value. The day’s champion was the Lot 151, which was a Van Cleef & Arpels ring with an emerald-cut, D-color, perfect inside, of about 22 carats. The jewel was sold for $ 2.6 million, almost the top of the range of the starting estimate. A ring with diamonds and a big ruby of 8,6 karat, however, in proportion was go better: estimated at between $ 600 and $ 800,000, it has touched the 2 million. It is no finish interest to pink diamonds. A ring with a pink diamond with an unusual rectangular cut with beveled corners of over 3 carats was beaten for 1.9 million.
There was a lot of curiosity on the auction, also for a heart-cut stone: a 15.87-carat diamond suspended from a platinum chain. It was sold in compliance with forecasts for $ 1.86 million. Finally, a Cartier bracelet of 1930s, platinum and diamonds, Art Deco style: sold for $ 991,000. Tom Burstein, head of Christie’s jewelery department in the US: “Our goal was to align the contents of the April auction with what is currently in demand and provide estimates that fit well into the context of today’s market prices. This approach led to a very strong sell-through resulting from competitive bidding on diamonds, colored stones and signed jewelry, thereby demonstrating strengths in the most vital areas of the jewelry market.” Federico Graglia

Apollo and Artemis: the Sotheby’s divinities

Two Greek gods in the form of blue and pink diamond up for auction at Sotheby’s in Geneva ♦
The match among auctions takes place, as usual, in Geneva. One day before the Christie’s auction, will be the turn of Sotheby’s on May 16 to put on sale the Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels at the Mandarin Oriental. And, as always, there will be an exceptional piece to fly the imagination of collectors: Apollo and Artemis Diamonds. They are not two Greek gods descended from Olympus, but two diamonds, one is Fancy Vivid blue, the other is deep pink Fancy. The two stones are cut pear-shaped and have been used for a pair of earrings, which Sotheby’s has defined as the most important appeared in the auction. But they are offered separately. The Apollo Blue from 38 million to 50 million dollars, while The Pink Artemis is estimated at between 12.5 and 18 million.
The Apollo Blue is listed as Fancy Vivid blue by the Gemological Institute of America and weighs 14.54 carats, internally flawless: it is the largest of its kind ever to be offered at auction. According to the GIA, Apollo Blue is a type IIb diamond, which includes less than 0.5% of all diamonds. Artemis Pink weighs 16 carats. According to the Gia is a type IIa diamond, the more chemically pure, with an exceptional optical transparency. Not more than 3% of the diamonds mined are colored diamonds and fewer than 5% are pink.
But how come the two diamonds were baptized with names of Apollo and Artemis? It’s called marketing, of course. In Greek mythology, Leto (Latona in Latin), the daughter of Titan and Phoebe, had an affair with Zeus and became pregnant with twins. When Hera, wife of Zeus, discovered yet another betrayal, she wasn’t unable to oust her husband from Olympus, and she has forbidden Leto to give birth on land. Found refuge in Delos, Leto gave birth to Artemis and Apollo. And in Greek and Roman mythology, diamonds were considered tears of the gods.
Next to the two top diamonds, in any case, the auction offers several interesting points. As the riviére diamond necklace that belonged to Princess Anna Murat, or a ring with intense pink diamond from 7 carats, or even a pair of earrings signed Reza rose gold and diamonds, with an estimated 1-1.5 million. Also notable is a ring by Van Cleef & Arpels with one of the considerable weight of 45.74 carat Burmese sapphire. Federico Graglia

Among the clocks are included, however, exemplary wrist and pocket watches from the eighteenth century to today, as a rare savonette Patek Philippe 1915 with chronograph and 30-minute counter (base 9000 Euros) and a late nineteenth century clock triple complication realized in Rome by the famous watchmaker Franz Michaelsen (base 13 000 euro). Among the more sought after wrist specimens, the top lot is a New Rolex Daytona 1953, at auction for 40,000 euro, “particularly rare for the state of exceptional preservation, original and perfect in all its parts, and no restoration . A quality that in the eyes of collectors will make it even more sought after, “says Maurizio Piumatti, operations director at Bolaffi.

At Baselworld is the Graff Diamond hour. The large Maison in London, specializing in jewelry with extraordinary diamonds, takes a road parallel and presents a new version of the bracelet that has also hidden a clock dial. But the construction of the timepiece jewel that is out of the ordinary. The jewel is called Princess Butterfly Secret Watch and follows the line of similar pieces also presented in 2016.
It is part of the series of fine jewelry bracelets that hide a clock following the habits of a century ago, when for a woman was considered vulgar wear a watch. Other times. Now these jewels are obviously anything but not to watch for an appointment. Anyway Princess Butterfly Secret Watch is revealed as one of the most impressive jewelry Baselworld. It is made with diamonds and gemstones that open the butterfly wings, with the invisible setting technique. It is a system introduced by Van Cleef & Arpels in the Thirties: a small guide rails in their place the stones, that are flowing through a tiny slot on the bottom surface. To view the time you push one of the diamonds on the surface: a hidden mechanism reveals the dial. Another difficulty to achieve this type of jewelry it’s find so many stones that have the exact same color. The watch bracelet using white gold and 66 baguette diamonds. The butterfly wings are available in four different variations: diamonds, rubies, sapphires and diamonds with sapphires. Margherita Donato

The precious robot of Van Cleef & Arpels

A jewel-robot that marks the time: the amazing single piece of Van Cleef & Arpels.
There are objects that are not objects, but references. They are fantasies that become solid only to remember something else. For example, the time. If the fourth dimension, that of minutes that flow, in turn serves to evoke another time, you get a fantasy to the square, or a hyperdimension. Complicated? Yet it is the experience you can live meeting the Objet Extraordinaire Automate Fée Ondine. single piece designed by Van Cleef & Arpels, may mark the passage of time, but also evoke the fashion of automata that between late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were an attraction in the royal courts. But in this case more than curious object, is a product of art and ingenuity. It’s been presented at the International Motor Show Haute Horlogerie in Geneva. The Object Extraordinaire has the flavor of a challenge. The plateau is silver plates engraved and glazed, white gold, pink gold, diamonds, pink sapphires. The fairy is made of white gold, diamonds, sapphires, aquamarine milk, plique-à-jour enamel. The silver lilies, enamel, yellow gold, diamonds, yellow sapphires and orange butterfly in white gold, diamonds, pink sapphires, Australian white opal. It is worthwhile to list all of the elements of this surprising gem-watch: the ladybug was made in pink gold, white gold, diamonds, Serti MystОrieux Traditionnel (the patented by Van Cleef & Arpels) of rubies. Finally, the base has an ebony coating. The mode of operation is fun: the automaton mechanism has a mechanical hand-wound movement with entertainment on demand, with five cycles of animation 50 seconds after full charge of the mechanism. To be precise, it is appropriate to say, the mechanical movement is manual winding, retrograde hour, eight-day power reserve. It has only one flaw: it is unique. Giulia Netrese
