Bonhams, the best jewelry at auction

//

Jewels by Van Cleef & Arpels, sapphires and carved emeralds: these are the most beautiful pieces from the next Bonhams auction ♦ ︎

For lovers of vintage jewels, but those that will never go out of fashion or even lose value, Thuesday 24 September, in London, the auction house Bonhams proposes some pieces that can entice collectors and lovers of fine jewelry. For example, a series of pieces by Van Cleef & Arpels that share a generous use of rubies are in the catalog. The jewels are part of a collection acquired around 1990, which includes a bracelet with rubies and diamonds made with Mystery Set, the patented technique of the Maison. The bracelet contains 177 perfectly matched rubies, each cut and set without spaces or claws.

Another strong point of the auction concerns sapphires, which after all are also the stone of the month of September. Two rings in particular are in the spotlight. The first has a 5.16-carat oval-cut sapphire flanked by two brilliant-cut diamonds. The second is a ring with a sapphire of 4.46 carats and diamonds, dated around 1900. Both sapphires come from Kashmir and have not been heated.

A sapphire for Sotheby’s

A bracelet with an exceptional 47-carat Burmese sapphire from Cartier at the center of upcoming Sotheby’s auctions ♦ ︎

The big, spectacular, expensive jewels are back on the boards of the great auction houses. It is the turn of Sotheby’s, which presents a group of extraordinary jewels from an important American collection. The jewels will be auctioned in the fall in New York (25 September) and Geneva (11 and 13 November).

It is a large collection of Cartier designer jewelry, which was collected by an important collector, who over the course of 50 years has acquired important pieces from the best jewelry houses, and in particular from Cartier. But it also includes jewelry by Van Cleef & Arpels and the King of Diamonds, Harry Winston. The result is a collection consisting of two distinct strands. On one side, a nucleus of pieces in classical style adorned with important diamonds and precious stones. On the other side, beautiful but less precious day jewels.

Lo zaffiro birmano del peso di 47,07 carati, affiancato da due diamanti bianchi a forma di pera del peso rispettivamente di 9,27 e 8,60 carati

Cartier’s Art Deco bracelet has an extraordinary design; its central stone is a sensational Burmese sapphire of the highest quality and color. Timeless pieces like these will surely have a global appeal.
David Bennett, international president of Sotheby’s Jewelery

The most important piece in the collection is considered to be an Art Deco style sapphire and diamond bracelet created by Cartier in 1927: these are the years that many consider the golden age for the jewelry house. The bracelet is decorated with a sensational Burmese sapphire weighing 47.07 carats, flanked by two splendid pear-shaped white diamonds weighing 9.27 and 8.60 carats respectively. The estimate is 2-3 million dollars.

The sapphire and diamond bracelet at the center of the collection is a superb example of Cartier’s art. The strong and powerful geometric design, which somehow resembles the solidity of architecture, is the perfect structure for the exceptional Burmese sapphire cabochon.

The Vanity Affaires by Christie’s

Cases for make-up created by the great jewelery houses in an exhibition organized by Christie’s ♦ ︎

Memorabilia related to the world of luxury. Or, more precisely, of what surround it. In September, from Wednesday 11 to Thursday 16 Christie’s organized an exhibition in Paris curated by the jewelery department of the largest auction house. The exhibition is called A Vanity Affair and will bring together 75 luxurious make-up cases created by the largest jewelry houses of Place Vendôme. The cases, which are real jewels, were bought and preserved by a couple of enthusiasts (who prefer to remain anonymous), who assembled them with love, taste and patience over the years, reaching 160 pieces.

In my fifty years in the auction business, I have seen and handled many collections by couples, from intimate mementos of private individuals to the joint property of such legends as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé. These usually started off as gifts to each other on special occasions, and as the collection grew, advanced to a more proactive and serious endeavor, often with treasures covering expansive periods, styles, and regions. The magic potion in these collections is the emotion. This is a lifelong love affair between two people, and their love affair with beauty and refinement.
François Curiel, president of Christie’s Europe

The same passion pushed the couple to assemble one of the most important private collections of Vanity and Minaudiere cases, retracing the evolution of the art of necessity from the 18th century to the middle of the 20th century. The collection records the evolution of taste between the two world wars and the alternating fortunes of politics and finance. It is also a hymn to the craftsmanship of the greatest jewelry houses, which have created these accessories for “modern women”. In fact, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Lacloche Frères hold a very special place in this collection along with Boucheron, Tiffany & Co, Fabergé and Black Starr & Frist, among others.

Opening one of these boxes, is like unveiling their intimate secrets, diving into their universe and going back in time. Traveling to Paris, London or New York, crossing paths with the different personalities from elites and café society: aristocrats, designers, heiresses, pashas.
Lyne Kaddoura, writer of the book A Vanity Affair

The collection includes pieces that were previously owned by personalities such as Suzanne Belperron, Anna Gould duchess of Talleyrand Perogord, her niece Diane de Castellane, Rachel Bunny Mellon, Pasha el Glaoui, Doris Duke.

Between the Twenties and Fifties almost all the main jewelery maisons supplied an elite clientele with these small boxes in gold and silver, decorated with diamonds, colored gems, jade and coral, and determined by the aesthetics of the day, reflecting many distinctive styles, Belle Époque, Art Deco, Oriental or Retro. But the mechanical aspect is also to be admired, with hidden hinges and layered compartments.
During the exhibition the book Vanity Affair will be available, 336 richly illustrated pages, published by Rizzoli. Federico Graglia

Romeo and Juliet in the jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels – 1

The romantic and dramatic story of Romeo and Juliet through the collection of high jewelery by Van Cleef & Arpels ♦ ︎

Romeo and Juliet is the most famous tragedy written by William Shakespeare. Needless to summarize the story: everyone knows it. The two unfortunate young lovers, killed by a cruel fate, have become symbols in the collective imagination. From characters of a theatrical work they have become real characters, so much so that in Verona thousands of tourists go to visit the house attributed to Juliet. It doesn’t matter if the girl has existed or not, the pilgrimage is in fact destined to sanctify love.

It is not surprising, therefore, that the universal myth of the contrasted love of Romeo and Juliet has been adopted by various artists, particularly in music and dance. More recently, for example, Benjamin Millepied, former prime dancer of the New York City Ballet and founder of the company L.A. Dance Project, has shared with Van Cleef & Arpels his project to create a contemporary version of Romeo and Juliet. It is not strange: since its origins Van Cleef & Arpels has had relations with the world of dance, a major source of inspiration for the Maison. For example, the collaboration between Claude Arpels and George Balanchine gave birth in 1967 to the ballet Jewels. And with Millepied the Gems trilogy was born, composed by Reflections (2013), Hearts & Arrows (2014) and On the Other Side (2016).

Working on Romeo and Juliet seemed necessary for several reasons. Literature is an important source of inspiration for the Maison, which in 2003 paid tribute to the Shakespeare universe with the Songe d´une nuit d’été collection. When Benjamin Millepied, with whom we have been collaborating for several years, announced to us that he was preparing a contemporary interpretation of Romeo and Juliet, a formidable creative opportunity was envisaged. Shakespeare’s masterpiece is the starting point of a new thematic collection, but also of a multidisciplinary dialogue between High Jewelery, dance, music and graphic arts.
Nicolas Bos, President and CEO of Van Cleef & Arpels

And so here is the high jewelery collection, which includes over one hundred unique, figurative or abstract pieces, inspired by the story of Romeo and Juliet. The jewels are inspired by different aspects of history, from the balcony scene, to the dawn that is approaching, the birds singing, the gardens and architecture of Verona, but also the parure and clothes of the Renaissance seem to come to life on the basis of the creations. Since these are pieces that need a more accurate description, we divide the collection on several pages.

According to the presentation of the Maison, “to make volumes, perspectives and reliefs, the specimens constantly play with geometry and curves, mixing cuts, settings and shades of stones. Whether it is subtle gradations or Pierres de Caractère, the gems speak the language of feelings, arousing a unique emotion: the ardor of the Serti Mystérieux rubies, the crystalline purity of diamonds, the depth of Colombia’s emeralds … In the rich colors dominate the red and blue, a legacy of the coats of arms of the two rival families: the Capulets for Giulietta and the Montecchi for Romeo. The result of the fusion of these two shades, the mauve color symbolizes the passion of the two young people united for eternity, while the green recalls the hope that animates them “.

Among other things, the theme of love is very present in the Parisian Maison, born Born of the marriage between Estelle Arpels and Alfred Van Cleef. Of course, the families weren’t in open hostility, like Capuleti and Montechi, but Van Cleef & Arpels had a clip dedicated to Romeo and Juliet that he had made already in 1951.

Masterpieces, high jewelry in London

High jewelry at the Masterpieces London fair: from Boghossian to Cindy Chao, Chatila, Grima … Here are the exhibitors ♦ ︎

From June 27 to July 3, in an exceptionally flushed London, Masterpieces London returns, an antique fair, arts and great jewels. In addition to the jewels of the time, also in this edition the high contemporary jewelry is not missing. Among the Maison present, for example, there is Boghossian, the sixth generation of jewelers based in Geneva, strong in the long Armenian tradition, with a passion for researching and treating rare gems around the world. La Maison is known for its innovative craftsmanship, which requires exceptional mastery techniques to contribute to the art of jewelry, as with the Inlay, Kissing and Merveilles collections.

Another jewel of the artist at Masterpieces London is Cindy Chao, who has kept the ancient European technique of lost wax. At the London fair she presents two collections of Art Jewel products, the Masterpieces Black Label masterpieces and the White Label Collection, both sought after by the most demanding connoisseurs at international auctions. The Royal Butterfly Brooch was adopted by the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC in 2010.

For Van Cleef & Arpels it is Perlée’s time

Van Cleef and Arpels adds jewel-like watches to his Perlée collection ♦ ︎

Proposed in 2008, Van Cleef & Arpels’ Perlée collection is inspired by the 1920s when, for the edge of some jewels, an Egyptian style decoration was used, that became fashionable after the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb (1922).

Renewed this year, as we have already written, the collection now also includes four jewel-watches, which are added to rings, pendants, earrings and a necklace with pendant. The pendant is composed of three rings of different sizes and in different versions: the central circle can be removed and replaced by one of the three other circles with turquoise, coral or onyx beads. Each bead has been shaped and polished by hand.

Perlée’s renewed collection also includes three sets of earrings, a pendant and a ring. As in the already presented jewels, cabochon-cut hard stones were used on yellow or white gold: malachite combined with yellow gold, turquoise with white gold and carnelian with rose gold. Obviously, the motif that gives the collection its name remains the edge of small golden pearls.

A bracelet and a pendant are instead used to accompany the jewel-style watches in secret. A pin allows you to rotate a surface to show the clock face, in mother-of-pearl and surrounded by white diamonds. The rotating cover can be of malachite, lapis lazuli, or diamonds with rose gold. There is also a type of watch that is inspired by those of the 17th century, to be worn hanging on a chain like a long necklace. Alessia Mongrando

New petals for Van Cleef & Arpels

New great jewels in the traditional Folie des Prés collection by Van Cleef & Arpels ♦ ︎

Van Cleef & Arpels also is blooming in spring. Or rather, it flourishes again. Because the Folie des Prés fine jewelry collection has been a classic for years now. But, just like in spring, new colors bloom in the collection. This year, for example, the Maison in Paris has launched a collection of spectacular jewels centered on equally spectacular rubies.
So in the Folie des Prés collection here are a pair of earrings with rubies paired with rose gold and diamonds. The stones have different cuts, which are used to compose the flower petals.

But it is not the only novelty. The collection also includes a watch-bracelet with a 23 mm white gold case, trimmed with round diamonds. The bezel is in white gold with round and marquise-cut diamonds, round pink sapphires and teardrop mauve sapphires, while the dial is in white mother-of-pearl. Also, in this case, the stones are used to compose elegant colored flowers, thanks to round pink marquise sapphires and mauve teardrop sapphires. The clasp is in white gold. The hour of spring has arrived. Giulia Netrese

The half million dollar Zip

Diamonds and period jewels like the Zip necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels: here are the results of Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in New York ♦ ︎

A ring with two blue diamonds of 6.7 million dollars. It is the price realized for the most prominent piece of the Magnificent Jewels auction organized by Christie’s in New York. A sign that colored diamonds are still popular, even if the price did not reach the maximum estimate, which was 8 million dollars.

On the other hand, diamonds were still the most requested pieces. A rectangular-cut diamond of 16.33 carats, on platinum and 14-carat gold from Tiffany & Co was beaten to 1.6 million, another marquise-cut diamond ring of 16.69 carats totaled slightly less, 1.45 million, and an oval cut rose diamond ring was purchased for 1.4 million. Other stones have found buyers for figures of just under a million dollars.

The outcome of the sale of jewelry is interesting. The highest price was obtained by a Zip necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels: estimated for a maximum of 200,000 dollars, the piece was more than double: 483,000 green tickets. Instead, the diamond and sapphire bracelet sold for $ 435,000 respected the forecast. The sapphire has also won acclaim for a ring of Bulgari beaten at $ 375,000. And always of the Roman Maison, a multigemma necklace has found a buyer for $ 375,000. Federico Graglia

Magnificent Jewels in New York with Christie’s: here are the most interesting pieces for sale at auction ♦ ︎

As always, as it was and as it will be, the Magnificent Jewels auctions hide pieces that make jewelry lovers go crazy. There is no need for some diamonds in the catalog to add a record to the list of more expensive gems. Jewels and exceptional stones, however, are not lacking at the auction on 16 April in New York organized by Christie’s. In short, the Magnificent Jewels rarely disappoint.

Jewels with blue blood from Sotheby’s

Princely jewels and a Fabergé tiara: Sotheby’s proposes rare pieces have belonged to the European aristocracy ♦ ︎

For those who love fine jewelry, the Fabergé name is like Raphael or Leonardo for art lovers: a champion who has marked a chapter in history. This is why the Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels auction scheduled in Geneva on May 14th is particularly interesting.

Among the jewels on sale, in fact, a diamond tiara attributed to Fabergé stands out, created around 1903 for the duchess Cecilie von Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1886-1954), the last hereditary princess of Prussia.

The tiara was given to the princess by her Russian relatives on the occasion of her marriage to Crown Prince William (1882-1951). The diadem has an estimate of 200,000 – 300,000 dollars.

As we saw last November with Marie Antoinette’s pearl, historic jewels have the power to transport us back to a moment in time. The tiara attributed to Fabergé is another perfect example: its Kokoshnik design reflects Crown Princess Cecilie’s Russian family, who gifted it to her for her wedding; from portraits we can see that she paired the tiara with her gowns in a very fashion-forward way for the very early 1900s. For so many collectors today – who seek out unique pieces with ‘soul’ – this jewel is really a masterpiece.

Daniela Mascetti, president of Sotheby’s Jewelry, Europe

The history of this tiara is linked to the fate of the Duchess Cecilie von Mecklenburg-Schwerin, who would become the last hereditary princess of Prussia. In June 1905, tens of thousands of people flocked to Berlin, the capital, to attend his marriage. It was the largest social event of the century still young. The extravagant celebrations lasted four days and the couple was showered with gifts, including silver, porcelain and even a splendid carriage drawn by Hungarian gray stallions, presented by the Austrian Emperor, Francesco Giuseppe I. Among the beautiful jewels given to the spouses there was the tiara attributed to Fabergé, an extraordinary gift from Cecilie’s Russian relatives.

Collana di smeraldi e diamanti, circa 1935

But the tiara will not be the most important jewel from the point of view of evaluation. Among the period pieces, for example, there is an Art Deco necklace, attributed to Van Cleef & Arpels. The beautiful necklace is of emeralds and diamonds and was created in the 1930s by Hélène Beaumont (1894 – 1988), an American and friend of the Duchess of Windsor. The necklace has 11 Colombian emeralds for a total of over 75 carats and is estimated at 3-4 million dollars. It is also a very versatile jewel: the central sections of emeralds and diamonds in the necklace can be detached and worn as bracelets.

This is Art Deco at its absolute finest, a connoisseur’s jewel. Rare and exceptional pieces like these are the reason people collect Jewellery. The first time I laid eyes on this emerald and diamond necklace was exactly 25 years ago when we sold the Hélène Beaumont collection in Geneva. I said at the time that it was the most important row of cabochon emeralds I had seen during my then 20-year career. Today, 25 years on, that statement still holds true.
David Bennett, president of Sotheby’s Worldwide Jewelery

The other jewels

After the sale of a spectacular oval diamond of 88.22 carats in Hong Kong, in Geneva two exceptional white diamonds will be on sale. The first, a brilliant-cut stone, weighs 36.57 carats (estimate 4.7- 5.7 million). Harry Winston’s second emerald cut diamond weighing 18.86 carats is valued up to 1.2 million. Both diamonds are of color D: the highest possible chromatic classification for white diamonds and belong to the rare subgroup of type IIa diamonds – which includes less than 2% of all diamonds, including the legendary Koh-i-Noor diamonds that they are part of the jewels of the British crown. Type IIa diamonds often boast exceptional optical transparency.

Another prominent jewel is an Indian-inspired jabot created by Cartier around 1925, during the period considered the maximum creativity of the house. With oval rubies, diamonds and polished onyx, the jewel reflects the important influence of India in Cartier’s work: it is inspired by a traditional ornament worn on a male turban, known as the sarpech. Another special jewel is a necklace with emeralds and diamonds created by the Maison of Trieste Janesich around 1920. The necklace has delicately carved emeralds depicting bunches of grapes and leaves. Finally, to report a ring with a central Kashmir sapphire of 8.35 carats. Federico Graglia

Van Cleef & Arpels, high jewelery in red

//

Red colour celebrates the new high jewelery collection by Van Cleef & Arpels, Treasure of Rubies ♦ ︎

Van Cleef & Arpels in red. It is the color that distinguishes the Treasure of Rubies fine jewelry collection, a new large line of 60 jewels that follows that of Emeraude en Majest in 2016, and continues the research of Pierres de Caractère, that is of special gems. In all, red stones were used for 3,000 carats that come from Tanzania, Madagascar, Mozambique, Burma. Only in this way the Parisian Maison has managed to compose this collection that in many ways resembles the great art deco jewels of the thirties, such as the famous peony brooches, or the famous ballerinas by Van Cleef & Arpels.

As always, for the Treasure of Rubies collection the Maison used the serti mystérieux, the technique invented by Van Cleef that allows you to juxtapose the stones without seeing a metal frame.

Collana della collezione Treasure of Rubies
Collana della collezione Treasure of Rubies

Queen of the collection is perhaps Flaming Ruby, a necklace that uses a rare ruby of over 25 carats cut into a cushion, to highlight the quality of the stone. Among other things, ruby has been one of the favorite stones since the foundation of the jewelery brand, thanks to the many trips of the Arpels brothers in India and the Far East in search of precious red gems. The rubies of the Treasure of Rubies collection are used in the Van Cleef style, with flowers, ribbons and oriental motifs composed with the combination of diamonds, on pink or white gold. Rubies, diamonds and class: nothing can be more precious. Giulia Netrese

The new Perlée by Van Cleef & Arpels

//

New bracelets from the Perlée collection, one of the successes of Van Cleef & Arpels ♦

A bit ‘is also credit of the most famous Egyptian pharaoh, Tutankhamen, if the Maison Van Cleef & Arpels has created a line of jewelry that appears to have eternal life, as the fame of the Nile King. The Perlée collection, born in 2008, in fact, is inspired by Twenties when, for hemming some jewelry was used the Egyptian-style decoration, which became fashionable after the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb (1922). This shape, with small spheres together to form a border or the shank of a ring, he has created more than half a century later to the Perlée collection. The idea, perhaps thanks to the influence of Pharaoh (who knows), was successful. Perlée was multiplied in Perlée d’or, Perlée couleurs, Perlée diamants, Perlée Trefles, Perlée signature …

In 2019 the Maison introduced a new design of the bracelet in pink, yellow or white gold, to accentuate both semi-precious stones and diamonds.

Bracciale in oro giallo, diamanti, malachite
Bracciale in oro giallo, diamanti, malachite

In 2016, instead, three Entre les Doigts rings were introduced, plus a pendant set with diamonds and matching button earrings. The ring Entre les Doigts is composed of two reasons stem from an open, with two cabochon: one is a hard stone, the other is composed of gold and set with diamonds. For example, yellow gold with malachite, white gold with turquoise, pink gold with carnelian. The pearl shape is revealed on the outline surrounding the two hemispheres. There are, then, the buttons earrings, which always use the cabochon shape, with yellow, white or pink, plus setting of diamonds. One of the aspects that has made the success of the collection, according to Van Cleef & Arpels, is also the ability of this line of jewelry to fit in unusual combinations with other models.

Also according to the Maison, for example, Perlée button earrings nicely blend with embedded or engraved creations as the ring Perlée Trèfles, the Perlée signature bracelets or ring Frivole diamonds. Etc. You can also combine three rings as a sandwiched: two Signature amid a Perlée couleurs. Just try.

54 clips by Van Cleef & Arpels

The most beautiful clips by Van Cleef & Arpels gathered in an exhibition in Paris. Here are some ♦ ︎

The clip, if you read the definition, is a spring clip of various types and for different uses. All right, but the clip can also exist for another, unique, different reason: to be admired itself. This is the case with high-jewelry clips, which usually stop nothing, close or serve anything but show their own beauty. Back in fashion after years of oblivion, the brooch has a second youth. And remember what happens when the fine jewelry marries the art of goldsmithing thinks about Van Cleef & Arpels, who in Paris, in the luxurious venue at 20 Place Vendôme, has organized an exhibition of his most famous clips: from the famous dancers, animals, flowers.

The exhibition is titled Le clip, a bijou de style et d’élégance and contains 54 pieces from Maison’s heritage collection, accompanied by drawings and videos.

It is also an opportunity to revisit fashions and forms linked to historical periods from the 1920s to today. Wheat, feathers, perfect hoops, lace knots, lions and chicks, fairies that are pinned on evening or day dresses, on different occasions. But always as a distinctive sign: not everyone can wear these small works of art.

Cufflinks with Sotheby’s

Cufflinks for men made by the big names in jewelry: they are auctioned by Sotheby’s ♦ ︎

Cufflinks are probably the only kind of twins that does not worry a man. On the contrary, the jewels as buttons used to close the cuffs of the shirts are coveted by many, exhibited by some, sought after by others. In short, even if the shirts that need the twins are reserved for a minority, it is not said that in the men’s wardrobe there is not some head of this kind. Not to mention that even some women like to experience the thrill of a shirt with cufflinks.

From 19 to 29 October Sotheby’s sells a collection of one hundred cufflinks online.

There are also twins with typically male subjects, such as golf, enamel or diamond playing cards, Bulgari cartridges, vintage or Formula 1 cars, champagne bottles and, of course, female figures and skulls in coral or diamonds . “An extravagant journey into the elegance of the masculine universe with examples of high jewelery and irreverent combinations of styles and materials”, says jewelery specialist Sara Miconi.

In Hong Kong, a 5-carat blue diamond is sold: it is the king in Sotheby’s auction. But there is also Wallace Chan ♦ ︎

The season of big auctions is come back and amazing stones, fabulous jewels and collector’s items are to buy. The October 3 appointment in Hong Kong on 3 October with the Magnificent Jewels auction at Sotheby’s, for example, includes several interesting pieces in the catalog. The king, according to estimates, could be a 5-carat blue fancy diamond ring.

At auction the jewels of the former Olympian

//

From the Olympic gold to the gold of the jewels: Bonhams auctioned those of the former champion Katherine Domyan ♦ ︎

Gold attracts gold. It is not a magnetic effect (in fact, gold does not behave like iron), but a general principle. Katherine Domyan, twice a gold medalist in the Olympic games for Hungary, has become fond of another kind of gold in her life, that of jewels. And now Bonhams, in New York, at 21 september auctioned the collection of the former athlete, who disappeared in October 2017.
An adventurous story that of Katherine Domyan. In 1952 in Helsinski and in 1956 in Melbourne he won the gold medal of the 10 freestyle. Meanwhile, the revolt against the communist regime broke out in Budapest. The athlete then decided to escape to the West, along with 42 other Hungarians who competed in Australia.

Including high-quality jewelry such as an Art Deco ruby ring, a diamond bracelet by Van Cleef and Arpels, 36 jewels by David Webb, including a rock crystal bracelet and a necklace of emeralds and diamonds in addition to pieces by Harry Winston, a ring with 23.13 carat emerald cut diamond and a necklace with diamonds of 86.30 carat diamonds. Van Cleef & Arpels, fairytale music

/

The Bremen musicians play a symphony for Van Cleef & Arpels ♦ ︎

From Paris to Bremen. The road is that of the Grimm brothers, who wrote at the beginning of the nineteenth century the fable Town Musicians of Bremen. The address is that of Van Cleef & Arpels, who conceived the collection of fine jewelry Quatre contes de Grimm, which we talked about here. The collection includes four fairy tales: The Twelve Dancing Princesses, The Golden Bird, The Three Feathers, Town Musicians of Bremen. This last fairy tale begins like this: “Once upon a time there was a donkey that carried heavy bags of flour every day. Just as his forces were dwindling more and more, one morning he heard his master announce that he would replace him. At these words the donkey escaped and took the road to Bremen “.
It was not easy to translate the fairy tale into a collection of fine jewelry. Van Cleef & Arpels has succeeded in this way: in the dark forest, Bremen musicians suddenly see the light of a window. This image becomes a bracelet with a halo of white and pink diamonds surrounding the central stone, with black spinels, onyx and round and baguette diamonds. “The distant clarity of the house is so evoked in a contrast of colors and materials that evokes an impression of splendor and brightness”.
In Grimm’s story, the animals triumph over brigands joining. The episode is evoked with the earrings that use Pierres de Caractére, with 14 yellow diamonds cut to pink for a total of 18.18 carats, diamonds. The pendants of the earrings are removable.
On the night of the fairy tale, the Sous la lune necklace shines with a rare ensemble of five rows of deep blue Burmese sapphires, for a total of 647.02 carats. Below, stands a pendant designed around a generous 29.44 carat emerald cabochon of Colombia. The pendant (with a perforated motif that evokes the deep forest of the fairy tale) is removable and can be worn alone as a clip. So, as in the fairy tale, fantasy is the winner.

Three feathers for Van Cleef & Arpels

/

The collection of Van Cleef & Arpels inspired by the fairy tale The three feathers of the brothers Grimm ♦ ︎

“Once upon a time there was an old king who had three sons. If the two elders seemed sociable and wise, the last one spoke so little that he was nicknamed the Idiot. Feeling that his end was approaching, the king gathered them and said to them: My three beloved children, I do not know who of you will succeed me on the throne. That’s why I entrust you with a mission: go and travel the world. Those of you who will bring me the most beautiful and refined carpet will inherit my kingdom. “Fairy tales, you know, tell adventures that have a moral, a teaching for children (and not only). Like the fairy tale The three feathers of the Grimm brothers, which has been translated into a collection of fine jewelry by Van Cleef & Arpels. The collection is part of a larger collection called Quatre contes de Grimm, which we talked about here. The fairy tales are The Twelve Dancing Princesses, The Golden Bird, The Three Feathers, Town Musicians of Bremen.

Clip Panache MystОrieux. Serti MystОrieux Vitrail zaffiri colorati, diamanti

Therefore, feathers could not be found in the collection. As in the Panache Mystérieux clip, in the shape of feathers, with round cut diamonds and baguette with colored sapphires. The Serti Mystérieux Vitrail technique was used for the pin. Presented by the Maison in 2014, it allows multiplying the plays of reflections, nuances and relief, enhancing the translucent appearance of the stones. Blue, mauve and yellow sapphires create a velvety surface. The cut each stone has been meticulously placed on the front, giving it a delicate roundish, and faceted on the verso to increase its brilliance. Each stone is inserted into the gold frame, which however remains invisible on both sides of the jewel. A magic worthy of a fairy tale, in short. The Trio précieux clip is also part of the collection dedicated to feathers, with a Fancy Vivid Yellow yellow cut cushion of 2.51 carats. Sautoir Serapi is a great impact, with a cushion-cut blue sapphire of 13.01 carats (from Sri Lanka), a pink cushion-cut sapphire of 3.08 carats (Burma), ruby, pink and blue sapphires, white cultured pearls , coral, diamonds. The sautoir is transformable, since the clip is removable. The necklace is combined with a pair of earrings and a ring, always with coral, pearls and sapphires. Among the jewels of this collection stands out the bracelet Carrousel des demoiselles, with an emerald of 10.41 carats (from Brazil), sapphires, diamonds: alludes to the circle of frogs of the fairy tale, but the wearer immediately turns into a princess.
