LVMH stop on Tiffany, who starts legal action

/

Surprise in the world of jewelry: LVMH has gone into reverse and announced that it will no longer buy Tiffany & Co. And the American company has taken legal action to challenge the turnaround. The first doubts about the real intention of Monsieur Bernard Arnault’s French group to proceed, as agreed last autumn, with the purchase of the American giant had emerged at the end of spring when the board of directors of the French luxury company (Christian Dior, Bulgari, DKNY, Fendi, Céline, Guerlain, Givenchy, Kenzo, Loro Piana, Louis Vuitton, TAG Heuer, Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, Hennessy) had expressed perplexity regarding the agreed price of $ 16.2 billion. The covid, which depressed the sector’s sales, was (maybe) the cause. But, says Tiffany, the pacts must be respected.

The New York Maison led by Alessandro Bogliolo (among other things, a former manager of Bulgari, who is now part of LVMH) has announced that it has already filed a lawsuit with the Court of Chancery of the State of Delaware. In fact, LVMH had already asked to postpone the definitive signature to November 24, three months after the date agreed almost a year ago, but in any case on the basis of a clause in the contract. According to the British newspaper Financial Times, on the decision of the giant LVMH also weighs a request from the French government to renounce the agreement in order not to undermine an ongoing trade war with the United States.

The new past of Francesca Villa

/

The objects found and the new jewels by Francesca Villa, a designer who brings the past back to life ♦ ︎
For years, in Valenza, she has developed collections of jewelry for brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Asprey, De Grisogono, De Beers, Tiffany, Bulgari and American companies such as Bailey, Banks and Biddle, Mayors and Jlg. Then, Francesca Villa said stop. But not to jewelry: she decided to create jewelry for herself, with her own brand. After travel and travel, she returned near Valenza, in the small town of Solonghello. Far from the noise of the big cities, yet very close to the world.

The specialty of Francesca Villa, in fact, is traveling over time. Through the jewels, of course. In her travels he buys objects and figures from other eras and uses them for her collections, which are flanked by more traditional jewels, with gold and precious gems. One could say that the designer lives in the present with jewels like her jewels like spheres and triangles, and in the past with the Object Trouvé, unique pieces that become precious for the story they bring inside. “I recognize these fragments of their evocative power, because an object always refers to a subject, to us, to our lost and rediscovered time”, is his philosophy. ” It is therefore from the union between objéts trouvés and precious materials, through the skilful work of Italian master goldsmiths, that the jewel that I conceived is born and develops, an unexpected union between worlds far away but from whose union blossoms an unrepeatable object, that of its uniqueness makes an absolute value”. Tiffany makes diamonds traceable

/

Ethically correct jewelry: it is a need that is increasingly requested by those who buy a precious object. In short, gold and diamonds must not come from mines that ruin the environment or exploit those who work there. With this premise, in October Tiffany & Co. will take a further step forward in terms of diamond traceability. The jewelry giant that passed under the insignia of the French group LVMH will disclose the entire processing path of its recently procured individually registered diamonds (starting from 0.18 carats).

Solitaire di Tiffany

In practice, those who buy a Tiffany jewel with diamonds will also know the country in which each stone is worked and mounted. This transparency, Tiffany points out, represents a first in the sector and follows what was announced a year ago, namely that the company would become the first luxury jeweler globally to indicate the origin (region or countries of origin) of its registered diamonds individually.

Today, our commitment to diamond traceability takes it one step further. Our customers deserve to know that a Tiffany diamond meets the highest standards, not only in terms of quality, but also in terms of environmental and social responsibility. We believe that diamond traceability is the best way to guarantee both.

Among the luxury jewelers on a global level, adds the American Maison, Tiffany & Co. is the only brand to own and manage five diamond processing laboratories around the world, where over 1,500 artisans work to enhance the maximum brilliance. scattering and sparkling of the stones, not just the carat weight. Thanks to these proprietary laboratories in Belgium, Mauritius, Botswana, Vietnam and Cambodia, as well as the Tiffany Gemological Laboratory in New York and five jewelry manufacturing laboratories in North America, the company is able to guarantee that its standards are met. superlatives.

Telling the Tiffany diamond processing journey reflects decades of investment in our supply chain. //

How to sell high jewelry if air travel is reduced, lockdowns for covid are rampant and people are increasingly at home? Tiffany thinks that, after all, if they are sold by telephone for millions of dollars pieces during the great auctions of magnificent jewels, also the company needs adapt: the high jewelery creations of Tiffany & Co., in fact, can now be touched by hand ( so to speak) via the internet. The idea is called, not surprisingly, Everything is Possible and is a service that brings online the unique pieces of high jewelery from the Maison.

This is not, however, a simple gallery of images: those who want to examine these jewels, which cost tens of thousands of euros or dollars, must have an digital appointment. Through the web, with particularly detailed images, you can then admire the most exclusive creations with the help of an expert guide: a certified gemologist Gia (the American Gemological Institute), who thanks to his competence and his technical contribution, can better describe the quality of the gems used and the goldsmith techniques behind the jewels. There are many gems that Tiffany has discovered and introduced into jewelry. For example, tanzanite, kunzite (which takes its name from George Kunz, historical chief gemologist of Tiffany), morganite or tsavorite.

Luxury jewelry? Vivrelle lends them to you

Would you like to show off a Bulgari jewel, but you don’t have enough money to buy it? Or maybe you prefer Van Cleef & Arpels? Or, again, by Cartier? In the United States they found the solution: it’s called Vivrelle. The idea is of Wayne and Blake Geffen and it is very simple: a club that offers those who sign up the opportunity to wear luxury brands. For now, the service is reserved for the US, but the founders plan to extend it to other countries. By the way: in addition to jewelry, Vivrelle also offers bags, clothes and other designer products. The idea was liked, also because it allows you to easily change wardrobes and jewelry.

It works like this: club membership costs a minimum of $ 99 a month, or 199 or 279. In the first case (Classique), you can borrow one item per month with an estimated retail value of less than $ 4,000. With the second option (Couture) you can borrow one item per month worth more than $ 4,000, including rare, unique and limited edition pieces. The third possibility increases the loan to two objects at a time: one piece from the Classique wardrobe and one object from the Couture wardrobe.

One of the most successful aspects is that borrowed clothes or jewelry can be kept for as long as desired. Shipping costs are included in the subscription. Does LVMH abandon the purchase of Tiffany?

Accordin to Women’s Wear Daily, the website that is the most accredited in the fashion business, the acquisition of Tiffany & Co by LVMH wobbles. The $ 16.2 billion deal for the purchase of the American jewelry giant would be challenged by the impact of the covid-19 epidemic, which would be heavy. The newspaper reports some more details: the members of the LVMH board of directors would meeted in Paris on June 2 to discuss the matter. Last November, LVMH agreed to acquire Tiffany for 135 per share. In early June, however, the shares are worth less: around $ 128. But this is not the point.

The French giant led by Monsieur Bernard Arnault is concerned about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, which has caused over 100,000 victims in America and an economic crisis, but also about the unrest caused by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The guerrilla climate in many cities indicates a very difficult situation also in perspective, the members of the LVMH board of directors probably think.

Not only. According to article from the Women’s Wear Daily, the same members of the LVMH board are concerned about Tiffany’s ability to cope with the financial deadlines of the coming months. The doubts raised, without being officially confirmed, could also be a simple signal of the will to renegotiate the agreement reached. But also the indication of a sensational rethink that could lead to a backtrack by the French.

T1 by Tiffany

Tiffany launches T1. It is a new line that rethinks the motif of the letter T, which is the initial of the name of the Maison and also one of the most successful collections in recent years. The choice of the moment, in the midst of the coronavirus crisis, surprised many. Even more unusual was the choice to present the collection directly on the company website and on Instagram, without resorting to traditional public relations activities.

Why it’s named Oscar
By the way: why are the golden statuettes symbolizing the award given by the Academy Award of Merit called Oscar? According to the most accepted theory, the name is a trivial coincidence: it derives from the exclamation of an employee of the Academy, Margaret Herrick, who at the sight of the first statuette exclaimed: “It looks just like my uncle Oscar!”. A name that nobody has taken from it anymore.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s in London, a Blue Box Café opens

In the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Audrey Hepburn stopped at dawn to look at the windows of New York jewelry, with a cup of coffee and a croissant. An elegant way to start the day or, better, to end the night. That idea was taken literally by Tiffany, who on the fourth floor of her New York flagship store, at 727 du Fifth Avenue, opened a restaurant, the Blue Box Café. The colors of the restaurant are all strictly white and blue Tiffany. In case you are interested, a breakfast with coffee or tea, fruit, egg, salmon and avocado tasting costs 32 dollars, while a light lunch up to 42 dollars.

The Blue Box Café, in fact, also opens in London, in the basement of Harrods, among little showcases with jewelry. It is not clear, however, if the Blue Box will only be for a limited period: the company is probably waiting to check whether the reception of the public will be positive. The menu, however, includes references to the city of jewelry, such as The Central Park Salad and The Big.

It is worth knowing. She was born in Klagenfurt, Austria, in 1944, but at the age of three she moved with her family to the United States. She studied art in Perugia, Italy, and in Hanau, Germany. She then married a former Tiffany gemologist, Bruce Cummings, in 1970. Her career as a designer coincided with the work of Tiffany & Co., from 1967. She designed the first complete jewelery collection under her own name in 1975. She became one of the innovative jewelry designers (together with Paloma Picasso, Jean Schlumberger and Elsa Peretti) associated with Tiffany. Then, in 1984, he set up his own brand, whit her name, in Bergdorf Goodman. A geometric necklace with emeralds and diamonds designed by Angela has been sold for 1.5 million dollars.

Angela Cummings was also famous for the type of processing with 18 carat gold, platinum and silver, with precious stones: often mixed these materials with unconventional combinations such as wood. He also experimented with classical techniques of creating jewels, such as the inlay of precious metals and iron, with a process known as “damascene”. Ginkgo leaves, spiderwebs, vines, shells, feathers, sea foam, dragonflies and orchids have been sources of inspiration. Giulia Netrese

Breakfast at Tiffany’s for Lvmh

LVMH puts $ 14.5 billion on the plate to buy Tiffany. Will he succeed?

Bulgari wants to buy Tiffany. Or better, the LVMH group, which also controls jewelery brands like Bulgari and Chaumet, offered $ 14.5 billion to Tiffany. According to the Wall Street Journal, the offer would be in cash and aims to strengthen itself on the American jewelry market. But, at the moment, the offer would have been rejected by Tiffany: price question. In essence, it seems to understand, if the owner of Lvmh, Bernard Arnault, proposed a higher price the deal could end.

Tiffany, New York

It must be said that the offer of LVMH evaluates Tiffany at about $ 120 per share, more than 22% more than the closing on Friday at the New York Stock Exchange, where the American Maison is listed. For LVMH this would be the largest acquisition ever made, even higher than that to buy the remaining share of Christian Dior in 2017.
Bernard Arnault

Buying Tiffany would allow Bernard Arnault’s empire to further diversify by increasing its exposure to jewelery, one of the fastest growing sectors in the luxury market. With its 300 stores worldwide, Tiffany is one of the largest jewelers in the world along with Cartier and Bulgari, which is part of the Arnault empire.

LVMH’s interest in the United States is well known and confirmed by the new factory opened in Texas last week in the presence of Donald Trump and his daughter Ivanka Trump. With its 4 billion in revenues a year, Tiffany has been suffering from competition for years and is looking for a revival that only recently seems to catch a glimpse. Having hunted up CEOs and seen his titles fall to $ 60 per share, under the leadership of number one Alessandro Bogliolo, the American jewelery giant is finding the luster he seemed to have lost. In fact, with Bogliolo Tiffany has redone the look of his flagship on Fifth Avenue in New York, where he has also opened a restaurant, crowning Holly Golightly’s dream of having breakfast at Tiffany’s. The company is also committed to expanding its audience by launching a men’s line of jewelery: around a hundred items whose prices range between $ 200 and $ 15,000.

The collection is also destined to expand to furnishing, with pincers for drinking and beer mugs only for men. Furthermore, Bogliolo is a familiar face for LVMH. He was for 16 years at Bulgari before it was bought by Arnault and then he was responsible for North America for Sephora, another Lvhm brand.

In addition to jewelry for men, for him Tiffany offers silver objects such as a yo-yo, a whistle, a removable meter and … ♦ ︎

After announcing it, Tiffany & Co showed her first jewelry collection dedicated to men at the Hollywood Athletic Club in Los Angeles. Obviously with male guests, and obviously famous: A $ AP Ferg, Lili Reinhart, Rowan Blanchard, Debby Ryan, Miles Chamley-Watson, Christian Combs, Miles Richie, James Turlington, Lucky Blue Smith, Kemio, Yosuke Kubozuka and Vic Mensa. But the New York Maison has also thought of another type of man: one that does not wear jewelry. And, perhaps, the one you never know what to give him because he has of everything.

Yo-Yo in argento e legno di noce
Yo-Yo in argento e legno di noce

Tiffany’s answer is summarized in a series of objects dedicated to man, also presented in Los Angeles, which have nothing to do with jewelry, except for the same blue-toned package that distinguishes the products of the American company . Apart from the classic watches, Tiffany offers objects such as a whistle (not to be used in the office, but on a sports field), a yo-yo, playing cards, ping-pong rackets, a harmonica (also this not to be used on the workplace), a removable meter, various ornaments and even a golf club. In short, after the fragrances for men, the choice of products to conquer the other half of the market has expanded.

Tiffany sells a $ 110,000 calendar

An Advent calendar signed by Tiffany: instead of chocolates there are jewels ♦ ︎

In many countries the habit of Advent calendars has spread. They are cardboard panels that indicate the 24 days remaining at Christmas. The calendar stops the day before. These calendars have spread from German-speaking countries. They are usually dedicated to children: from 1920 the windows indicating the days hide a little chocolate. The habit of these calendars was then extended to all European countries and to the United States. This year, however, you can buy a special one. And a bit expensive: it’s sold for $ 110,000.

Il calendario dell'Avvento di TIffany
Il calendario dell’Avvento di TIffany

The idea is of Tiffany, who prepared a large Advent calendar of 1.20 meters. The calendar depicts the flagship store on Fifth Avenue and contains, of course, objects signed by the American Maison. That’s why the price doesn’t justify the chocolates. For example, in the calendar you will find a Tiffany cup in sterling silver, a T True bracelet in 18k yellow gold and a Tiffany Smile pendant in 18k rose gold with diamonds. There are 24 pieces in all, enclosed separately in the classic Tiffany blue boxes. However, the calendar will only be available in some stores of the Maison. Lavinia Andorno
