The jewels of the Tefaf 2017: from Hemmerle to Belperron, from Cartier to Reza and…
The Tefaf in Maastricht (March 10 to 19) is not only interesting for news by Wallace Chan (we talked about here). One of the most important antiques shows and design in the world, also this year hosts several large pieces of jewelry between art, antiques and design fairs with an evaluation process that it is considered by many to be among the most stringent in the world. At the 275 retailers and designers from 20 countries, there are jewels to be seen, ancient and modern. In addition to those of Chan, for example, they are present design signatures as Otto Jakob and Hemmerle, that uses traditional and unorthodox materials to create his customized parts. Halfway between ancient and modern are the signed pieces Verdura and Belperron, recreated from the original designs of the two famous designers. Do not miss the high jewelry, for example that of Reza, Maison of Place Vendome, that has some stunning pieces. And then Cartier, Lalique, Tiffany … Here are pictures of some of the most interesting pieces. Federico Gragliaù
Wallace Chan, news at Tefaf
At Tefaf in Maastricht, the earrings Birth and Blossom, a new work by Wallace Chan.
In Maastricht, Netherlands, is coming back Tefaf (10 to 19 March), the largest antiques fair, which also includes an area dedicated to the jewelry. And not only the antique, but also to pieces of high contemporary jewelery which in some cases are works of art rather than jewelry to wear at night to go to the theater. This is the case of Wallace Chan, who not coincidentally began his career as a sculptor. Then, he became a legend of jewelry and more. His pieces are bought for millions of dollars, but you don’t ask him directly the price: he don’t talk about it. As with paintings and sculptures, the artist is not to deal with these venal aspects, but the dealer (or dealer), which provides the destination. The maestro Chan makes jewels as dreams that materialize through the finest materials and a manual skill out of the ordinary. The carved stones and daring combinations are the ingredients on which builds his works. At Tefaf, inter alia, Chan exposes the new earrings Birth and Blossom, realized with two emeralds for a total of 30.88 carats, pearls, yellow and white diamonds, pink sapphires and mother of pearl. Look at the picture: the jeweler (but it makes sense to call it that?) he carved two pearls, and has placed within them diamonds and sapphires, from which comes a titanium coil that acts as a link with the hanging stones. The pistils are surrounded by diamonds. All is above two large emerald pendants. Only this gem is worth the trip. Federico Graglia
Hemmerle still amazes
The new pieces of fine jewelry by German Maison Hemmerle: new and surprising combinations materials.
As they say in German language «high jewelry»? It’s easy: you pronounce Hemmerle. La Maison conducted by Stefan and Christian Hemmerle not only has the courage as lions in presenting new forms, but always hits the mark (ie, produces heart palpitations to the traditionalists), with the use of materials that are not part of the history of jewelery, such as aluminum. Added to this is the quest for novelty in the processing of stones and metals, and the results are amazing. At Tefaf, which was held in October in New York, for example, Hemmerle also presented pieces made with copper, steel, bronze and aluminum, paired with sapphires of Kashmir and blacks or white diamonds, jade and silver, gold and agate. The contrast is strong, but also inspiring. Certainly the Hemmerle jewels, also these new pieces, you either love or hate. Probably those who love modern design, innovative, bold, will tend to appreciate this jewelry that, after all, in some respects reminds one vaguely Bauhaus style. Even the movement of designers and architects in the thirties was viewed with suspicion by the traditionalists. But today is an example of how design can become a work of art. Margherita Donato
Wallace Chan and friends at Tefaf
The best pieces of jewelry at Tefaf New York: there is also a new ring by Wallace Chan.
Tefaf, the most important event dedicated to antiques, but not only, arrives in New York. Established in Maastricht in 1988, the fair has been so successful that it was also exported to New York, where it even two editions, in May and in October (22-26). Although the focus is centered on paintings, sculptures and antique furniture, there are prestigious exhibitors offering antique and contemporary jewelry. And among the great jewels to see (you can observe something this page), there are those of Wallace Chan, the first Chinese designer to be invited to this prestigious art fair. Chan is a master not only in the composition of the different elements, but also in the processing of stones, with innovative cuts and often patients incisions on the surface. The novelty is called the Ring of Night, which has at its center a large amethyst for over 116 carats. Although at first glance it seems a rather simple ring, it’s actually surprisingly built without griffes to hold the stone. It is the hand of the master. Next to this piece out of the ordinary, and it’s not the only Wallace Chan that will be in exhibition, Tefaf also houses other pieces of great value, as the earrings by Reza to the Camellia brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels. Masterpieces at Tefaf
If you love high-class jewelry, maybe the old jewels, it’s a golden opportunity that comes back: the Tefaf Maastricht, important event dedicated to antiques. In Tefaf you will find everything of the highest quality: furniture, paintings, ceramics, and also exceptional jewelry, as those who publish here as preview. The Tefaf 2016 will be held from 11 to 20 March at the Mecc (Maastricht Exhibition and Congress Centre) of the Dutch city. You have time, then, to prepare for a visit. It’s worth it: in addition to the jewelry you see on this page (is a selection of those who will be exposed), the Dutch exhibition is also an opportunity for numerous cultural events. An area of the fair, for example, will be curated by Mark Kremer: space is entitled «Zeige Deine Wunde / Show your wound», reference to a sculptural work made by Joseph Beuys in an underground passage in Monaco in 1974. The installation will show the work of artists who continue to explore and express the ideas of death, decay, expropriation and the sense of trauma (injury), as suggested in the original work Beuys. In addition, there is the exhibition of a collection of prints and drawings from the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, with works by Bellini, Grünewald, Dürer, Fra Bartolomeo, Tintoretto, Rubens and Rembrandt to be complemented by modern and contemporary works by artists such as Degas, Cezanne, Dali, Magritte, Fontana and Kusama.

Tefaf comes back
Tefaf Maastricht is coming back: the leading trade fair in the world dedicated to art and antiquities embeds a section dedicated to fine jewelry. The fair is scheduled between 13 and 22 March 2015, but those interested must make haste to find place: at Tefaf converge collectors, museum directors, art professionals, art lovers from around the world. Among other things, this edition also offers the possibility to visit an exhibition entrusted to a guest curator: Night Fishing, edited by Sidney Picasso and Hidde van Seggelen, with contemporary sculptures and post-modern, with artists such as Georg Baselitz, Tony Cragg and Richard Deacon.
There is also, as mentioned, a section dedicated to the jewelry. Includes really unique pieces, like the silver eagle on a mineral pedestal signed Buccellati. Or a pair of earrings with diamonds in the shape of laurel wreaths of Chopard. And Graff exposes Le Collier Bleu de Rêve, with a diamond from 10,47 carat Fancy Vivid Blue and a Colombian emerald from 4,22 carat. And, again, the extraordinary Kapok ring signed Otto Jakob, made using sticks beeswax, inspired by the shapes of twisted tree roots kapok rainforests of Southeast Asia, partially oxidized white gold, and sapphire blue from 7,49 carat, 223 diamonds brown diamonds and 214 blacks. In short, they are truly works of art pieces and not clash in a context like the Tefaf. Federico Graglia
