The bijoux for the summer of Swarovski, in the Ocean line dedicated to the world of the sea ♦ ︎

The Ocean line is one of four proposals by Swarovski for the summer 2019. Pendants, necklaces, earrings and bracelets are obviously inspired by the world of the sea and in particular marine flora and fauna. Lobster, seahorse crab, with small shell-shaped charms alternate on bijoux proposed by the Austrian house famous for its crystals. At the center of the scene are the long necklaces and earrings that incorporate Swarovski crystal bead in pastel shades of pink and blue.

They are bijoux with small chains in yellow or rose gold plated metal or with an undefined mixed plating, on which the pendants are applied. It will be a symbolic springtime. Not for weather reasons, but for the decision of Swarovski to focus part of the creativity dedicated to the spring summer 2019 collection to the symbols. Like for the set Lucky Goddess, born from the Origins collection and signed by the creative director of the Austrian Maison, Nathalie Colin. It is not enough to produce jewels, we must also know how to show them. Let’s face it: 99 percent of jewelers choose the classic way to show them on a neutral background. It is usually a white or black surface, sometimes gray or of an indefinite color. In this way, attention is focused on the jewel, in agreement, but the emotion or the feeling that the object can connect with whoever buys it is not communicated. In short, it is the simplest solution, not wrong, but not even original. There are, however, other ways to portray jewels. For example, that of the great photographer Milena Mazza, who has chosen to combine the jewels with a glam, strong, emotional, dynamic and colorful image. Milena is one of the rare professionals who is able to show a jewel in a strong context without making it disappear but, on the contrary, exalting it. The idea of this series of images was that of a shooting in which rings, bracelets and necklaces were worn by a model struggling with food & drink. The contrast in the images is strong: rings and bracelets in white gold and diamonds are worn while a woman rubs the dough for the pizza, with a hand full of strawberries squeezed rings. Or rings and bracelets with diamonds sparkle on hands that break the ice with an awl. The surprising effect is assured, and it is also a bit sensual.

From movement to the still life

Milena Mazza, a photographer, was born in Bologna, but started working in the cinema: “I was the first woman in Europe to be the assistant operator, that is the camera assistant when she was filming: a very important role technical”, she says. “For years, I’ve always worked, every day, until I found myself taking pictures at the request of a client and I found out that I liked it a lot more.” A wise choice. “I started working with the images because, as soon as I finished my studies, I decided to devote myself to what I was most passionate about, since a great part of life is spent working”. A profession in which, however, there are no surprises: “I had a thousand special requests, but the most unusual was to photograph a model on the toilet for an advertisement,” she says.

Swarovski launches a collection in blue to be greener. That is more respectful of the environment and fairer with those who extract the yellow metal. Which, in the collection presented at Baselworld, is actually white. And it’s the first Fairtrade gold collection, that is correctly extracted, of the Austrian brand. The jewels presented in the classic booth Swarovski of Baselworld, also have synthetic diamonds instead of the classic crystals of the Maison. These are stones that, Swarovski emphasizes, do not have a direct environmental impact on the environment, since they are born in the laboratory (even if to create synthetic diamonds it is necessary to use a lot of energy). In any case, it is the first time that Atelier Swarovski uses Fairtrade gold. The metal is purchased from the Minera Limata Limitada cooperative in Peru. Fairtrade aims to promote sustainable development and reduce poverty.

“The world is changing fast. Faced with this challenge, there are only two alternatives: to grow larger or to concentrate. We have chosen to concentrate”. The words of Sylvie Ritter, managing director of Baselworld, have opened the new edition, the number 101, of the great fair dedicated to luxury watches and jewelery. Indeed, more and more luxury, because if Baselworld 2017 counted 135,000 total visitors, down from 145,000 in 2016, in November the Mch group, which organizes the fair, announced that it would have halved the list of exhibitors and reduced the duration of the event, two day less, in response to the difficult phase recorded by the Swiss watchmaking players (the export of Swiss watches, however, after two years of crisis started to rise again at + 12.6% in the first few months of 2018). Baselworld also reduced the rental fee for the stands by 10%.
The result is that in Basel there are about 700 exhibitors, almost halved compared to 1,300 in 2017, when they had already fallen by 200 compared to 2016, but still the past year attracted 106 thousand buyers and 4,400 journalists (including those of gioiellis.com). And yet, if there are no more brands like Movado or Eberhard in watchmaking, there are always leading names like Rolex, Patek Philippe, the Swatch group with its many brands, some of which, like Omega. There is also the Lvmh group with Maison like Bulgari and Tag Heuer. And there are many top brands of jewelry, from fashion like Swarovski, or haute joaillerie with Graff, de Grisogono or Harry Winston, up to small Maison but with great creativity like Alessio Boschi, and the classic brands of Italian jewelry, Nanis, Giovanni Ferraris , Annamaria Cammilli, Picchiotti, Fope, Leo Pizzo, Casato, just to name a few. L2 is a New York-based consulting firm that specializes in comparative analysis of brand digital performance. Now L2 has released its annual report, which ranks the digital expertise of some of the world’s largest watch and jewelery brands. In short, it is a ranking of those who better use web and social media. Result: out of 70 brands examined, only two are promoted with full marks: Tiffany and Cartier.
The L2 exam focused on four factors: the website and e-commerce, with the examination of the loading speed, the product pages, the user experience and online customer support. And, then, the effectiveness of digital marketing, for example visibility in Google searches, and articles on the media, but not those paid. That is, those you read on gioiellis.com, unlike photos and quotes published on many blogs that are nothing but masked advertising. Other factors considered for the ranking are the loading speed on tablets and smartphones, and more generally the functionality tested on different devices.
After x-raying the digital activities of the 70 brands, L2 awarded points in five categories: Genius (for those who exceeded 140), Gifted (110-139), Average (109-90), Challenged (89-70) and Feeble (<70). Only two eventually returned to the Genius category: Tiffany & Co. (144 points) and Cartier (140).
Tiffany, for example, boasts the best product pages, as well as excellent feedback in articles on various newspapers. Cartier, on the other hand, earned points for the ease of booking online appointments and a strong presence on YouTube and Instagram. Just below the two best performances is Swarovski (139), followed by Alex & Ani (138) and David Yurman (136). Pandora and two brands of the LVMH group, namely Bulgari and TAG Heuer, are also classified in the first ten places.
