She is famous above all for two characteristics: the use of white diamonds or colored sapphires and for the stones invariably cut into baguettes. Now, however, Suzanne Kalan extends a new variant in her collections: black sapphire. The first jewels, presented at the very beginning of spring, are designed to be stackable, a feature also present in past collections. But, in the intentions of the American designer of Lebanese origins, the black color makes the jewels potentially wearable even by men.

The new jewels are also designed for baguette-cut stones, which Suzanne Kalan considers a very contemporary shape but, at the same time, not linked to a fashion of the moment. The stones are arranged on the jewelry so that they appear irregular and asymmetrical. In addition, black sapphires are in some cases combined with small white diamonds, which accentuate the contrast. A choice also shared by Patile, daughter of the designer who has long supported her mother in the family Maison.

Spring rainbow for Suzanne Kalan, designer born in Lebanon in the Armenian family of Kalandjian jewelers and now with life and work in California. Her jewels of the Firework line are, in fact, one of the collections with greater success, but also with continuous renewal: the colored baguette-cut gems are composed of lively puzzles, with a very cheerful effect. The new pieces in the collection follow the innovative style proposed at the debut.

The jewels are also the result of a technical skill all in the family: Suzanne, in fact, worked with her husband Paul, who is an expert diamond setter. It was 1988. Now in the jewelry brand the founder was joined by her daughter Patile, who had actually directed her studies in the field of biochemistry. But the charm of gold and colored gems has prevailed.

The Amalfi collection of Patile Kalandjian is added to the jewels of Suzanne Kalan ♦ ︎
Born in Lebanon by an Armenian family, Suzanne Kalandjian moved to Los Angeles. And here she invented something: the brand Suzanne Kalan. But also a style, and it’s not a little thing, which curiosely recalls a mixed or aligned matches, quartzes on the walls of ancient caves, salt crystals, and even fries. Gold and diamonds are cut into baguettes and aligned or put together in a fake disorder, which is actually harmonious. Often the effect of her jewels is spectacular. After 28 years of work, Suzanne is now assisted by her daughter Patile, who curiously approached biochemistry studies before hiring her maternal profession. Signed by Patile, for example, the Amalfi collection, inspired by the small Italian town overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, where the designer went on holiday (“one of the best trips I’ve ever had,” he told). In this collection a new selection of cuts and precious stones has been added, such as moonstone, amethyst, topaz, morganite, with colors that recall the sunrise and sunset views of the Mediterranean coastline. Rio Tinto, one of the world’s major diamond producers with mines in Canada, Australia and Zimbabwe, wants to rejuvenate the market and alongside the famous 4 C’s choice the real reasons people buy diamonds: love, emotion and, why not?, the beauty of a jewel that is not only in stone, but also in design. To do that had promoted the brand Diamond with a story and every year asks four talented jewelers to create a caspsule collection (for 2015 ere Sandy Leong, Jennifer Dawes, Suzanne Kalan and Matthew Campbell Laurenza), to be shown at Jck in Las Vegas. The idea behind the project is to provide traders jewelry at a very reasonable price for diamonds, ranging from 500 to $ 5,000, from more contemporary design and wearable every day all day. Something that for Millennials, customers with a maximum of thirty years the target stated, is different from what their parents wear, without being ostentatious or bling bling. Among the four themes suggested by Rio Tinto, the one of Sandy Leong is Shaped by origin, and the designer has chosen the rain as a creative motif to remember the immanence of nature. Rings, necklaces, earrings and bracelets are shaped with long raindrops in recycled gold silky finished connected by gray or champagne diamonds from the Argyle mine in Australia. If the traditional bridal jewelry bother you, look the Suzanne Kalan collection featured at the Couture Show in Las Vegas. There are engagement rings ultra feminine, modern and joyful with baguette-cut diamonds set in random order around a central stone pear-shaped, with prongs in yellow gold in contrast to the white of the gems that seem to shoot out sparks, or surrounding a very classic round brilliant, or support the solitaire which shank is composed by diamonds set asymmetrically.
