All about amethyst

The stone of February is the amethyst. But this gem also it like in the other 11 months of the year. Discover the qualities of the amethyst in this article ♦
Has always been considered a sort of talisman: Sumerians and Babylonians and Egyptians wore amulets made with amethyst for protection, and for the ancient Chinese was a material with which to store spices, healing balms and ointments. In nature this variety of quartz is found inside of stony masses and quarries, geodes, crystals containing groupings. One of the most famous is the one discovered in Brazil in the area of Rio Grande Sol, 30 meters long and 15 meters completely covered with amethyst crystals width, so large that it must be dug in the ground. Amethyst is also the stone of February.

The color range. It is truly remarkable, ranging from light pink to deep purple with many intermediate shades, as the example lavender or lilac, christened Rose de France, or the darkest shade almost bluish shades from red or pink typical of the stones from Russia , whose mines are now exhausted. Then there are amethysts Uruguay and Arizona with a deep blue-purple, the Zambian light purple. All owe their color to iron impurities. Some are two-tone, gold and purple, are called ametryne, and consist of quartz citrine and amethyst. Others, are green and are baptized prisiolite.

Origin. There are many mineral sources, practically in almost all over the world, but the most important producers are Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar and Zambia. A good quality stones are also found in the United States, South Korea and Austria.

Rating. Until the 18th century it was considered a precious gem as much as a diamond, a sapphire, an emerald or a ruby. The most valuable specimens came from the Ural Mountains of Russia, but the discovery of large deposits in Brazil and other countries has largely decreased the price. Currently the main evaluation criterion is the color: the more intense and more uniform the quality. Attention to the nuances, must be neither brown nor gray.

Purity. It is a gem of type II, so it can have slight inclusions visible to the naked eye but if its dark color hides, it becomes more difficult in the pink variety, lavender or green. It is often found in large, it can be up to 20 carats, and is almost always natural because the heat treatment and thus the cost of such a convenient stone does not make sense.

Seaman Schepps story

Short history of the great American designer Seaman Schepps, a master of color ♦ ︎
There are designers who have a resounding success for a shorter or longer period. And there are designers who enter history. One of these is Seaman Schepps. Son of immigrants, he became famous for his vintage-style jewelry. From the East Side of New York, at the end of the nineteenth century, Schepps moved to California, with its own shop in Los Angeles that also sold antiques in addition to jewelry. In 1931 he returned to New York, where he finally had a good success with a store on Madison Avenue.

Schepps, like many Americans of that time, regarded Europe as the beacon of creativity. Therefore, when he visited Paris, he studied Verdura’s jewels for Chanel, Suzanne Belperron, René Boivin and Jeanne Toussaint for Cartier. These great designers have contributed to the professional growth of Schepps, which has found its artistic path: large jewelry, super retro-style bracelets, many colored stones. He was not a revolutionary of jewelry, but a painter who used the colors of the palette in an original way.

The stones were often cut irregularly, they used little diamonds, while they preferred pastel-colored stones like blue sapphires, emeralds, yellow topazes, citrines, rose quartz, jade, turquoise and lapis lazuli. In short, he has reworked already used geometries, such as the Maltese cross, but with his own style. His work continued until the late 1960s. Then, the Seaman Schepps brand was sold to Jay Bauer and Anthony Hopenjam and still exists. But the designer’s original jewels are still very sought after. Cosimo Muzzano

Tefaf online with high jewelry

Tefaf New York Fall, a fair of precious and antiques, will be online this year due to the health emergency (1-4 November, with a preview on 30-31 October, 300 exhibitors). At Tefaf, in addition to the rookies we wrote about here, there are prominent jewelers, such as Hong Kong artist-designer Wallace Chan, Hemmerle, Cindy Chao, Taffin, Otto Jakob, as well as jewelry from past designers such as Suzanne Belperron.

European jewelry is represented by Hemmerle, a great Maison in Munich that combines the avant-garde with luxury. Refined shapes, surprising combinations of materials are the ingredients of Hemmerle’s jewels. Among the jewels present at Tefaf online, there is a pendant with tassel composed of small natural pearls suspended from a base of silver and white gold, paved with diamonds. The cord is made from smoky quartz beads knitted using a nearly extinct Austrian technique revived from the early 19th century of woven precious gem beads. Each bead is cut and carved and pierced by hand. Otto Jakob also comes from Germany, specializing in small jewels with floral or animal themes. He often uses gold and enamel together with colored stones.

French, but a long time resident in New York, James Taffin de Givenchy is another refined jeweler present in the Tefaf review. It is difficult to frame Taffin’s jewels and his Maison in a single style: they are truly out of the ordinary. Like the necklace with large tanzanite accompanied by black pebbles on platinum and rose gold. Really unique.

From the East, Hong Kong, comes another jeweler-artist always present at Tefaf: Wallace Chan, who presents a brooch in the shape of a butterfly. It is a jewel that highlights Wallace Chan’s fantasy and superfine technique, which uses titanium to maintain the lightness of the jewel. For example, the gemstones on the butterfly’s wings are angled to convey a sense of life and movement. The butterfly also houses an 8.24-carat imperial topaz used for the body of the butterfly, with two emeralds at the end. The brooch also includes rubies, yellow diamonds, orange sapphires, tsavorite garnets and set diamonds. Also from Hong Kong, Cindy Chao (who was born in Taiwan) brings her pieces of high jewelry. For example, the Black Label Masterpiece III Green Plumule 2020 brooch, made with 487 emeralds (17 of these from Colombia) different shapes and sizes, for a total of 172.58 carats.

The jewels of the myth Suzanne Belperron are back

Suzanne Belperron’s jewels return thanks to a company that bought the brand with the name of the famous designer.

“My style is my signature,” said Suzanne Belperron, one of the most influential jewelry designers of the 20th century. And in fact, until 1960 she never branded a piece with her name: the wavy shapes inspired by the nature and cultures of exotic worlds and the unusual large stones were enough to characterize a production that had Elsa Schiapparelli, Fred Astaire, Frank as admirers Sinatra, the Duchess of Windsor and Colette.

The brand of the gifted designer, who passed away in 1983, was recently acquired in 2015 to be relaunched by Ward Landrigan (formerly director of Sotheby’s jewelry department) and by his son Nico. An operation that recalls that started in 1985 with the purchase of what remained of the company founded by Fulco di Verdura, another well-known designer.

In common Belperron and Fulco Verdura still have great notoriety and impeccable quality. Now, after the relaunch of the Sicilian aristocrat’s jewels, it is the turn of the great French artist. With a true artistic heritage collected in years spent buying at auctions and in private sales, the Landrigans have begun to recreate his jewels with the relatives of the Parisian artisans who worked with Belperron. An almost philological reconstruction also in goldsmith techniques. And with an aesthetic that had abandoned the Art Deco taste of his era, to embrace Egyptian, Asian, African and Oceanian influences with the forms of flora and fauna worked with 22 carat gold, chosen for its color despite softness. The prices of the new jewels range from $ 13,000 to six-figure figures. If you’re interested, the Belperron boutique is located on Fifth Avenue, New York.

The jewels of Tefaf in New York

The Tefaf returns to New York for the Fall with so many exceptional jewels ♦ ︎

The Tefaf is back in New York, the great event dedicated to design, antiques and precious objects, like jewels. Born in Maastricht, the fair has long since expanded its appointments with two events in the American city, in spring and autumn (October 27-31 in 2018). The reason is clear: New York offers the ideal setting in America for a fair like Tefaf, which remains the benchmark for the European market. In short, it is a point of arrival for traders and lovers of beauty, from painting (with works until 1920) to jewelry, but in this case it is not only vintage.

At Tefaf in New York there are pieces of Maison like Cartier, Otto Jakob, Hemmerle or designers like Suzanne Belperron and René Lalique.

In addition to the commercial aspect, cultural events are also scheduled at Tefaf, such as a conference on Sunday, October 28th, which focuses on Men and Jewelry: does an earring have gender? Why, in short, are the jewels in the West seen so often as a feminine art form? Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Museum prepares an exhibition entitled Jewelry: The Body Transformed. In short, for those who happen in New York it is an opportunity to consider the jewels also from a cultural point of view. Margherita Donato

May’s Tefaf jewels

Suzanne Belperron and Taffin protagonists of the spring edition of Tefaf in New York ♦ ︎
Founded in fairly recent times, in 1988, Tefaf is considered the world’s leading organization of art, antiques and design. It is a high level fair, with exceptional pieces. Also of jewels. But over time, Tefaf has multiplied by three: in Maastricht it covers 7,000 years of art history; New York Spring focuses on art and modern and contemporary design and New York Fall covers decorative and refined art from antiquity to the 1920s. To a certain extent, jewels never fail in any of these manifestations, even though the greatest quantity of pieces can be found at the Maastricht appointment in March.
Now, however, it is time of New York (4-8 May 2018). Also in this case there are interesting pieces. With two authors, in particular: Suzanne Belperon and James Claude Taffin de Givenchy, founder of the Taffin brand. Among the first, the catalog includes pieces with a collar-shaped collar in gold, 40 centimeters, from 1940, but also a geometric ring in silver and hematite of the ’30s, or a pair of clip-on earrings with pearls, platinum and diamonds. Of Taffin, a rose gold ring with garnet and ceramic, a brooch with spessartite cabochon and two earrings with diamonds in gold, ceramic and rose gold. In short, among many paintings, sculptures and antique furniture there is no shortage of jewelry to see. Federico Graglia

Wonders at Tefaf

At Tefaf in New York the wonders of jewelery from yesterday and today ♦ ︎
Successful things are replicating. For example, fairs such as Tefaf, an institution founded in 1988 in Maastricht, Netherlands, and soon became the most renowned Art and Antique Fair in Europe. And, last year, also in America, with the New York Autumn Edition, at Park Avenue Armory. In 2017 there is the second test of relocating Tefaf in the States (from 28 October to 1 November). As with the Maastricht edition, most of the pieces exhibited include works of art, antique furniture, and antique furniture. But there are also old and modern jewels, all of the highest quality.
For example, Siegelson presents Cartier art pieces and signed by Suzanne Belperron. But, like in the European edition, there are also today’s designers, such as German Hemmerle, or the Chinese jeweler-artist Wallace Chan, who, alongside a high technical virtuosity design, also uses patented systems to work with titanium. Among the exhibited works, for example, there are the Wonders of Life earrings, which recall a flower blooming by a pine, with roots made of diamonds and emeralds. A green light shines from the bulb made up of purple titanium cheeks, while pink sapphires link the stem of the plant to a white diamond flower. Federico Graglia

In Monaco an auction with Belperron & c

You want to combine the sea, the luxury and the thrill of an auction of jewelry? Write down on your schedule this date: 16-19 July. In the Principality of Monaco, under the insignia of Artcurial, at the Hotel Hermitage is scheduled for a summer marathon that includes the sale of 563 pieces. There’s something for all tastes, from a auction value of one thousand euro (for a brooch with diamonds), up to rise to much higher estimates. And it is understandable why: next to interesting pieces, but anonymous, there are charm bracelets, rings and necklaces of the largest names in jewelery from Bulgari to Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier to Boucheron. But don’t less the signatures of the great designers, as in the case of Suzanne Belperron, which we have chosen to symbolize the event, or Jean Vendôme or French sculptors Arman and Cesar. The pieces in auction go from a jewelry of the early twentieth century to contemporary pieces, with an (obvious) prevalence of the French Maison. The pieces, on tan skin, should stand out very well. The 37 pearls queens of Paris

It seems that an auction of jewelry is a flop if not record a record, maybe for a diamond from the amazing color. Not so. Sales like the one organized by Christie’s in Paris on June 1, where there were lots “normal”, also fine workmanship jewelry, but without that uniqueness that attracts media attention, are interesting to understand the mood of the jewelery market ( therefore also for a hypothetical evaluation of what you have at home) and, at the same time, to observe some beautiful piece of jewelry hitherto stored in some safes. In this case, the auction of Parisian jewelry has reserved the most successful in a necklace, sold for 385,000 €. But the news is not the price, but the fact that it is a simple necklace composed of 37 pearls. Perfect, for charity, but even simple pearls. A solitaire ring with a big 20-carat diamond was sold for 237,900 Euros, while a pair of earrings with diamonds to 5 carats totaled 205.500 Euros. Much appreciated an emerald necklace with gold beads partially glazed: drew 107.100 Euros. Higher than estimated the value attributed to Suzanne Belperron coquillage earrings, which we have already spoken here. They were sold for 85,500 Euros compared to the eve of the estimated 40-60,000. A selection for connoisseurs in Paris

There are jewels that tear a wow, there are stones that cry out records, there are auctions that live of media, as well as money changes hands. Other sales, like the one organized by Christie’s on June 1 in Paris, are involving the true connoisseurs. There are not diamonds that scream, but quality pieces. As Coquillage by Suzanne Belperron: earrings-shells by, 1935, which are deservedly on the cover of the auction catalog. Each shell is made with a paved diamonds, and a black line of enamel. The estimate ranges from 40,000 to 60,000 euro. By the same mythical designer it is proposed a necklace of rubies: is composed of two lines of the ruby spheres, with a closure consisting of two cabochon rubies in a circle of diamonds. It is dated around 1960 and is 59 centimeters long, mounted in 18K white gold and platinum. The necklace is valued between 15:00 and 20,000 euro. But, in addition to traditional signatures, as the earrings with emeralds Cartier, you also get the bracelet with a futuristic design Ulla + Martin Kaufman, or the hermetic cuff by Sophia Vari called Eros. 7 incredible jewelry

Every so often you should take a few minutes to observe the best there is: we chose these seven exceptional jewelry, all sold by Artcurial, because they are a good example of what can become a jewel. That is a masterpiece of technique, composition, imagination. Are all examples different from each other, precisely because some enhance the color of a stone, others focus on the difficult art of representing objects or animals, some are a flight of creativity abstract. The seven jewels that we have chosen have also been made at different times in the history of jewelry, and summarize, therefore, also fashions and styles, but also the history of costume and art, which are the main cultural elements which are reflected in the jewelry. Sure, they are pieces of particular importance and only a few can afford to own them, even fewer women have the opportunity (and a little ‘courage) to wear them. Look at them well. Giulia Netrese
