The color range. There are designers who have a resounding success for a shorter or longer period. And there are designers who enter history. One of these is Seaman Schepps. Son of immigrants, he became famous for his vintage-style jewelry. From the East Side of New York, at the end of the nineteenth century, Schepps moved to California, with its own shop in Los Angeles that also sold antiques in addition to jewelry. In 1931 he returned to New York, where he finally had a good success with a store on Madison Avenue.

Schepps, like many Americans of that time, regarded Europe as the beacon of creativity. Therefore, when he visited Paris, he studied Verdura’s jewels for Chanel, Suzanne Belperron, René Boivin and Jeanne Toussaint for Cartier. These great designers have contributed to the professional growth of Schepps, which has found its artistic path: large jewelry, super retro-style bracelets, many colored stones. He was not a revolutionary of jewelry, but a painter who used the colors of the palette in an original way.

Tefaf New York Fall, a fair of precious and antiques, will be online this year due to the health emergency (1-4 November, with a preview on 30-31 October, 300 exhibitors). At Tefaf, in addition to the rookies we wrote about here, there are prominent jewelers, such as Hong Kong artist-designer Wallace Chan, Hemmerle, Cindy Chao, Taffin, Otto Jakob, as well as jewelry from past designers such as Suzanne Belperron.

European jewelry is represented by Hemmerle, a great Maison in Munich that combines the avant-garde with luxury. Refined shapes, surprising combinations of materials are the ingredients of Hemmerle’s jewels. Among the jewels present at Tefaf online, there is a pendant with tassel composed of small natural pearls suspended from a base of silver and white gold, paved with diamonds. The cord is made from smoky quartz beads knitted using a nearly extinct Austrian technique revived from the early 19th century of woven precious gem beads. Each bead is cut and carved and pierced by hand. Otto Jakob also comes from Germany, specializing in small jewels with floral or animal themes. He often uses gold and enamel together with colored stones.

French, but a long time resident in New York, James Taffin de Givenchy is another refined jeweler present in the Tefaf review. It is difficult to frame Taffin’s jewels and his Maison in a single style: they are truly out of the ordinary. It is a jewel that highlights Wallace Chan’s fantasy and superfine technique, which uses titanium to maintain the lightness of the jewel. For example, the gemstones on the butterfly’s wings are angled to convey a sense of life and movement. The butterfly also houses an 8.24-carat imperial topaz used for the body of the butterfly, with two emeralds at the end. The brooch also includes rubies, yellow diamonds, orange sapphires, tsavorite garnets and set diamonds. Also from Hong Kong, Cindy Chao (who was born in Taiwan) brings her pieces of high jewelry.For example, the Black Label Masterpiece III Green Plumule 2020 brooch, made with 487 emeralds (17 of these from Colombia) different shapes and sizes, for a total of 172.58 carats.

Suzanne Belperron’s jewels return thanks to a company that bought the brand with the name of the famous designer.

“My style is my signature,” said Suzanne Belperron, one of the most influential jewelry designers of the 20th century. And in fact, until 1960 she never branded a piece with her name: the wavy shapes inspired by the nature and cultures of exotic worlds and the unusual large stones were enough to characterize a production that had Elsa Schiapparelli, Fred Astaire, Frank as admirers Sinatra, the Duchess of Windsor and Colette.

The brand of the gifted designer, who passed away in 1983, was recently acquired in 2015 to be relaunched by Ward Landrigan (formerly director of Sotheby’s jewelry department) and by his son Nico. The big auctions in Geneva are closed, and Christie’s starts again from New York. Another collection on sale is that of Judith-Ann Corrente, president and director of the Metropolitan Opera Association, with 28 jewels signed by leading designers, such as Belperron, Boivin, Fouquet, René Lalique and an Art Deco diamond sautoir by Van Cleef & Arpels .

Finally, the super pre Christmas auction includes contemporary jewelery by Maison such as Jar and Taffin, Beats Pro audio headset runs with Graffiti diamonds and rubies, created for Super Bowl XLVI artists, worn by Lmfao, Madonna and Lil ‘Wayne. With over 1,500 diamonds weighing over 120 carats and 28 rubies with 3.35 carats, this unique piece of collaboration is offered for the first time at auction.

The top piece should be a sensational Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond Ring of 8.08 carats from Bulgari (estimate 13-18 million dollars). According to Christie’s, this stone can be counted among the best blue diamonds ever on the market. But among the 370 lots for sale, there are also other stones of great appeal: a necklace with a heart-shaped pink diamond of 15.56 carats (estimate 9.5-12 million) and a ring with yellow diamond Art Déco Fancy Vivid of 8.09 carats, by Gillot & Co. (estimate: 900.000-1.200.000). Founded in fairly recent times, in 1988, Tefaf is considered the world’s leading organization of art, antiques and design. It is a high level fair, with exceptional pieces. Also of jewels. But over time, Tefaf has multiplied by three: in Maastricht it covers 7,000 years of art history; New York Spring focuses on art and modern and contemporary design and New York Fall covers decorative and refined art from antiquity to the 1920s. To a certain extent, jewels never fail in any of these manifestations, even though the greatest quantity of pieces can be found at the Maastricht appointment in March.

But the news is not the price, but the fact that it is a simple necklace composed of 37 pearls. Perfect, for charity, but even simple pearls. A solitaire ring with a big 20-carat diamond was sold for 237,900 Euros, while a pair of earrings with diamonds to 5 carats totaled 205.500 Euros. Much appreciated an emerald necklace with gold beads partially glazed: drew 107.100 Euros. Other sales, like the one organized by Christie’s on June 1 in Paris, are involving the true connoisseurs. There are not diamonds that scream, but quality pieces. As Coquillage by Suzanne Belperron: earrings-shells by, 1935, which are deservedly on the cover of the auction catalog. Each shell is made with a paved diamonds, and a black line of enamel.
