The golden pearls of Jewelmer

If you like golden pearls, with that warm shade that only the South Seas can offer, you must get to know Jewelmer. The brand was born over 40 years ago in the Philippines, where the cultivation of these special pearls takes place on the initiative of Jacques Branellec and Manuel Cojuangco. The specialization in golden pearls has been successful and the brand has made itself known all over the world, from Japan to Kazakhstan, from the United Arab Emirates to Colombia. Last year Jewelmer opened a single-brand store on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach in Florida, United States.

The golden pearls used by Jewelmer are those of the South Seas. Many wonder if the golden pearls are completely natural, or if they are covered with a gold dust. The answer is that they are natural pearls. The golden variety generally comes from the Celebes Sea between Indonesia and the Philippines and is made from a particular variety of oysters called Pinctada Maxima. These are medium sized oysters who love this particular tropical habitat and produce a golden pearl. These pearls, which are more generically part of those defined as the South Seas, can have a shade from pale gold to pink gold, up to green gold or intense yellow. However, golden pearls are rarer than white ones, also because they often come from remote and unspoiled areas, such as the province of Palawan in the southern Philippines.

The brand offers jewels made with pearls grown on their farms, located in a protected marine area and employ eco-conscious processes, such as the use of solar energy and the implementation of waste recycling. An attention to the environment that won the Initiative of the Year award of the year at the Jewelery News Asia Awards in Hong Kong in September 2018. But apart from the concept of sustainability, the Asian Maison counts on the interest aroused by its jewels, gilded like the Eastern sun.

Shaun Leane’s precious challenge

Light jewels, with a curious contrast between art nouveau and minimalism, in full London: here is the work of Shaun Leane ♦

London, a short walk from Bond Street: if you look for Shaun Leane, you’ll stand for accuracy at 18 Woodstock Street. He began to learn the craft when he was 15 in the laboratories of London’s goldsmiths: while his peers were playing football, he learned the art of jewelry, as an apprentice. It was his way: now the brand Shaun Leane invents, proposes and sells prized pieces and, above all, originals. But not outlandish. Shaun Lee is also known for another reason: over the years he has designed sculptural pieces created for Alexander McQueen, highly appreciated during fashion shows.

Shaun says: “We can not look to the future without looking at the past.” Although her jewelry are available to be purchased online, any case, each model are produced only small amounts. Also because it is often not easy to find on the market the necessary elements, such as natural pink pearls, tourmalines or particularly exciting. Prices of jewelry ranging from a few hundred pounds up to 8-10,000. But the ring with two diamonds pear cut 8 carats, set in white gold, with a particularly elaborate design, costs more than 20,000 pounds. The designer also created the engagement ring of Princess Beatrice, daughter of Prince Andrew of England, with Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

How to clean pearls

Pearls are among the most delicate components of jewelry. So, how to clean pearls? This is a question that many women ask themselves when they have a necklace or other piece of jewelry that uses these little balls produced by oysters. Beautiful, but also delicate. Even more so if the pearls are those inherited from their mother or grandmother: in short, those who have celebrated numerous birthdays and can suffer more from cleaning. How to prevent them from getting damaged? Here are some useful tips to keep your pearls clean and shiny.

Anello con cluster di perle
Nimei, anello con cluster di perle

Why are pearls so delicate? It is good to remember that pearls are not minerals, like diamonds or rubies, but have an animal origin. A pearl is produced inside the soft tissue of a living mollusk, or of another animal, such as fossil conulariids. Just like the shell of a shell that you find on the beach, a pearl is composed of calcium carbonate (aragonite or a mix of aragonite and calcite) in a crystalline form, which is deposited in concentric layers. The perfect pearl is round and smooth, but there are also irregular shapes known as baroque pearls. In short, pearls are delicate.

perle pulizia2
Pulizia di una collana di perle

The cleaning. Pearls should be kept clean. But be careful. For example, the disinfectant gel used for the hands can kill microbes and viruses, but it is certainly not a cure-all for pearls. After handling the pearls with your hands, or after wearing them, it is better to clean them with a slightly damp cloth soaked in soapy water (just a few drops) and then rinse with clean water. Dry the pearls with a soft cloth to regain their shine. There are those who use ultraviolet rays to disinfect clothes (especially in shops). Can this hurt pearls? The answer is no, no problem.

Giovanni Ferraris, anelli Vanity con perle

What not to do. Be careful, however, not to use aggressive or abrasive detergents that can easily ruin the mother of pearl. For cleaning, it is best not to use ultrasonic instruments, which are usually used for gold or silver jewelry.

Tips for keeping pearls healthy. Avoid putting pearls in contact with cosmetics, including sunburn creams. Do not wear pearls until after you have spread a perfume on your body. Be careful not to perfume the part of skin in contact with pearls. Pearls have a surface that is easily scratched: store them in a space separate from other jewels, which could ruin them. Pearls originate in a humid environment, wearing them often benefits their shine. But without exaggerating: the sweat of the skin is not good for mother of pearl because it has an acid component.

But the breakthrough came in 2009, with the Thai designer Thakoon Panichgul, who has also created jewelry worn also by the American First Lady. The collaboration has yielded some of the most successful collections. And also introducing a breath of renewal. For example, with the use of inverted diamonds, combined together with the pearls as opposed elements of a unitary balance. La Maison not only uses Akoya pearls, but also South Sea. Next to jewelry using pearls also offers classic collections of rings, necklaces or bracelets in gold and diamonds.

It is the most famous beach in the world: the strip of sand on the sea that bathes Rio de Janeiro. And Hipanema is the brand born in Paris, but created by two young women who, they specify, live in the French capital in arrondissements 7 and 18, Jenny and Delphine. After their trip to Brazil, a decade ago, they decided to bring colorful glamor to the world of European bijoux.

Result: warm and bright colors, carioca fantasy, but with a Parisian taste. In short, everyone likes them. The brand has established itself first of all for the bracelets, very simple, rich in fringes, colors, gilding, ribbons, cords and shells. The jewels also have a magnetic closure which makes it easy to wear them. In addition to bracelets, rings, necklaces and earrings also follow the same playful style. The materials used immediately recall the atmosphere of Rio and Bahia and nobody said that you can worn only one at a time. They are also sold online.

A Hydra for Roberta Risolo

/

Hydro in Greek means water, a word that gave birth to names such as Hydruntum, the ancient name of Otranto, an Apulian town overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Hydra, a new collection by Roberta Risolo, a goldsmith artisan active in the city, is inspired by the original name of Otranto. The collection is also a way to celebrate the ten years of activity of the boutique laboratory where she works with the lost wax casting technique.

The origin of the name Hydra also determines the sinuous shape of the jewels, made of silver, pearls and semi-precious stones. Hydruntum takes on various references: a water snake, that is a small river (the Hydro) that flows into the sea, but also a snake that defends the city with its coils, snakes twisted around a stick of Mercury, the mythological god of trade, which may perhaps be useful for the jewelery business, not to forget Hydra, a monster with many snake heads from Greek mythology. The list of references also includes the Turkish threats to the fortress of Otranto, in 1480, and the legendary figure of Idrusa, a woman who stabbed herself to avoid falling into the hands of Ottoman pirates.

Assael’s rare pearls

In Rajasthan with the rich jewels of Sawansukha

//

The large, luxurious, traditional Indian jewelery gifts signed by Maison Sawansukha ♦

For nearly two centuries the name Sawansukha was associated with the diamond trade. You do not know, probably, but today is one of India’s leading jewelers. In particular of Rajasthan, in Bikaner city. The style is that of the great Indian jewelry, it was of the maharaja’s, now of course mediated by a more modern taste, although anchored to tradition. Gold, diamonds, pearls, platinum and precious stones to create jewelry that make you dream even those who are not fond of the East (but is there anyone who resists the allure of India?).

Anello in oro giallo 18 carati con 36 diamanti
Anello in oro giallo 18 carati con 36 diamanti

For a pearl and diamond necklace, for example, the jeweler has a poetic explanation: it represents the dance of a peacock when it rains. The diamonds in the shape of peacock feathers, and hopeful look to the clouds, symbolized by the pearls. The diamonds from the ranks of pearls are like drops of water falling disperse. The other jewel, however, is inspired by the goddess Lakshmi, the center of the pendant: a jewel more traditional, very exotic.

The Jörg Heinz secret

/

Mobile jewels, which make precision an extra treasure: those of the German Maison Jörg Heinz ♦

When you say «made in Germany», you often think to mechanical industry, for example the cars, that are exported worldwide. But the ingenuity of the Germans also embraces the jewelry, as evidenced by Jörg Heinz. Born in 1942, the designer studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Pforzheim. Then, it has been four years in Denmark, where he met the Danish jewelry style. He returned to Germany, but after marrying his wife, Irene. And here begins the story of the brand, which has managed to combine the gold with the mechanical genius. The Heinz Jörg jewelry, in fact, have a particularity: they are like the little schloss, castles. They are safe, but also beautiful to look at. The jewels, in fact, contain clasps, fasteners, which are valuable, but also masterpieces.

Collana con perle di Tahiti e oro rosa
Collana con perle di Tahiti e oro rosa

The German jeweler has started its journey with the development of jewelry with pearls, usually unique pieces or small series. Working around the necklaces with pearls, Jörg has decided to address what is the point more delicate and often least successful of these jewels: the closure, which is often a simple hook. The solution to the puzzle came in 1974: the closure clip was transformed and enhanced. The ingenious designer has transformed the locking mechanism in a design element that should not be hidden behind the neck. Instead, you can simply open holding it and then pressing and rotating the closure. The precise mechanism (we are in Germany) of the closure makes it easy to open and keeps firmly closed the jewel. Since then, the closure has been considered a jewel in its own right and has enjoyed several variations. Today the founder of the company is supported by his sons Martin and Lars Heinz and daughter Andrea Mössner. But the secret of his jewelry is still capable of surprising mechanism: in 2015 a jewel signed Jörg Heinz won the Couture Show in Las Vegas.

The wonderful nature according to Mikimoto

/

Geography lesson according to Mikimoto. What are the five continents of the world? Africa, America, Australia, Eurasia, Antarctica. The new high jewelry collection of the Japanese Maison, famous for its pearls, is called a Wild and Wonderful, and redesigns the map of the globe, with a free geographical interpretation. The result is exceptional. The jewels, for the most part brooches, are grouped in series that correspond to the continents and represent motifs that connect to flora and fauna. For example, antelopes for Africa, a parrot for America, penguins for Antarctica, a turtle for Australia or pandas for Eurasia.

Nature, Mikimoto points out, has been a source of inspiration for the Maison since its foundation in 1893. Wild animals reproduced with surprising details always use pearls, but of different origins and types. They can be natural freshwater pearls, Akoya cultured pearls, or baroque, while a brooch uses the rare conch. Together with pearls, the collection is made with a careful choice of precious gems, such as diamonds, rubies or sapphires, and semi-precious stones, including alexandrite, beryl, spinel, peridot or aquamarine.

Little H’s sandwich pearls

//

Pearls that hide rubies or emeralds: the jewels of Little H are really different from the others ♦ ︎
The cult of pearls originated in Japan, but not all Japanese consider pearls as an untouchable symbol of the perfection of nature. Pearls can be used, worked, opened, excavated, modified: and that’s what Hisano Shepherd does. Born in Japan, but growing up between Tokyo and Los Angeles, where she resides today, the designer began designing jewelry as a girl. “My grandmother took me to the Takarazuka theater, a female theatrical group and wore her most precious jewels. In particular, I remember his emerald engagement ring and cocktail rings with opals”, says Hisano Shepherd.

His contact with jewelry began with the study of goldsmithing techniques during high school and then with specializations between Los Angeles and New York. She then started to practice in a repair and polishing workshop for a fashion jewelry producer, until she focused his creative path and founded his Maison, Little H. Today she works mainly with pearls, round or baroque. But in an absolutely original way: the spherical fruit of the oysters is worked up to house rubies, sapphires and emeralds. They are sea pearls or freshwater pearls, perfectly round or with irregular volume, white or colored. And maybe split in half. A collection, for example, is called Pearl Geode, for which it has also filed a patent application.

Autore’s best pearl jewels, the result of a story that began 30 years ago. At the table ♦

Oil, tomato and a plate of pearls. Or, better, a plate of pasta, the typical Italian food, for the great pearl producers. Legend has it that this is how the professional story of Rosario Autore began, also thanks to Italian cuisine, in love with Australia and the spherical oyster products. But, obviously, also skilled in the kitchen. Over 30 years ago, according to the story, Autore put the Italian culinary tradition, his hobby, to good use in a dinner that allowed him to weave the necessary relationships to start the production and trade of South Sea pearls. , among the most valuable. And he probably didn’t imagine that he would become one of the largest pearl producers in the world.

After starting the cultivation of pearls, the Autore brand has also evolved as a jewelry manufacturer, with a proposal for collections that are not confined to the classic necklaces with a string of pearls, or to simple clip earrings, but also range to high jewelry.

Mothers go to heaven with Marco Bicego. But make no mistake: without losing contact with the Earth. The Venetian brand, on the occasion of Mother’s Day, presents an abstention from the Paradise collection, one of the first creations by Marco Bicego. The jewels in this collection are made of 18-karat yellow gold, interspersed with colored stones such as amethysts, topazes, tourmalines and quartzes. The new extension of the jewelry line adds freshwater pearls, but without altering the style and overall effect. The jewels always use small elements in yellow gold engraved by hand with a burin.

Pearls, which are the characteristic element of Yoko London, in this case are used in small sizes of 3-3.5 millimeters, so that they are able to enrich rings in white or yellow gold, alternating with brilliant-cut diamonds. Furthermore, freshwater pearls are offered in the classic white pearly white color, or in a pink version. The rings, like the earrings, are of two volumes, with one or two rounds of pearls.

How to clean cameos, pearls, emeralds, opals, crystals

/

How do you clean a fragile piece of jewelry, which can easily be ruined? Here are the rules to follow to clean a jewel without damaging it ♦
Maybe you have fragile, delicate jewels in your drawer. It is very easy: most of the jewels are not made with very hard stones, such as diamonds or rubies, which are more resistant stones (although despite this they can still be damaged). There are also materials that are damaged or scratched very easily, for example cameos, pearls, emeralds, opals, crystals. And the materials that are glued are also fragile, such as the stones that make up a pavé.

Pulizia di una collana di perle

Attention, therefore: this type of jewelry must be treated very, very carefully. Especially when it is necessary to clean them, an operation that must be repeated regularly. By the way: even better than cleaning jewelry is to prevent it from getting dirty. Don’t wear them if you have to do gardening, wash the dishes, or if you are going to sprinkle yourself with a cream, or any other action that has to do with dirt and chemicals.

Fortunately, it is not difficult to clean a delicate jewel, as long as you follow these tips.

Mossa 1: immergere il gioiello in una tazza d'acqua

Mossa 2: aggiungere una goccia di sapone liquido neutro. Eventualmente utilizzare uno spazzolino morbido

Materials to use

  • Warm water
  • Liquid neutral soap (to avoid antibacterials and aggressive soaps)
  • Soft cloth: an old cotton T-shirt or microfibre is fine
  • A soft toothbrush, preferably with natural bristles

How to do

Mix warm water (neither hot nor cold) with a drop of neutral soap in a glass or on a concave dish. When the mixture boils a little and has diluted well, dip the jewels and let stand for two minutes. If dust has settled in the cracks (for example, between a stone and the metal), use the soft bristle brush very gently. Focus mainly on the underside. Make sure to rinse the solution well, always with lukewarm water: soap residues can damage the stones. When finished, dry gently with a soft cloth.

Cameos or emeralds

We can add a separate tip for cleaning cameos or emeralds. In addition to following the instructions you read earlier, in this case you can use the oil that is used for the body of babies. Emeralds, for example, can get damaged due to micro cracks, almost invisible, but which tend to widen: a drop of oil can prevent them from further ruining.
Caution

Warning: these indications are generic. Obviously, if you have a very old or particularly delicate jewel at home, ask your trusted jeweler for advice before carrying out any operations that could ruin it. Lavinia Andorno

Aucella in red from four generations

Coral and cameos: they are the specialty of one of the most traditional jewelers of Torre del Greco: Aucella

Coral for four generations grown in the Neapolitan pole of this art: Aucella has been part of this elite for eighty years. In Torre del Greco, home of the goldsmith tradition that focuses on the red fruit of the sea, the Aucella family has worked among corals, cameos and jewels from 1930 to today. And in the spring of 2019 Vincenzo Aucella was elected president of Assocoral, the Italian association that brings together producers of coral and cameos jewelry. Aucella’s define their passion, with an ironic habit (typical of the Neapolitans), “a mysterious disease”.

Fortunately, the cure for this mysterious disease has not been found, and the history of these coral specialists, born when this marine material was still found in the Gulf of Naples, has yet to end. The coral is worked smooth or engraved, for jewelry or cameos. The jewels, originally created on customer request, are now enriched with natural stones, diamonds, South Sea pearls and Tahiti. But alongside the unique pieces, the brand also inaugurated a less demanding line of products, in silver, with the name 925byAucella. Those you see below, however, combine coral with gold, diamonds and precious stones. In addition to coral, Aucella also produces cameos. Among the specialties of the house there is also the making of cameos starting from a photograph: much better than a selfie.

What are baroque pearls? Here is a quick guide to baroque pearls and how to recognize the different shapes of irregular pearls ♦

Okay, they gave at you a necklace with baroque pearls. But do you know exactly what it means? No, they have not been fished in 1700 by someone who played the harpsichord. And, then, what kind of baroque pearls are? They are not all equal. Here’s everything you need to know about baroque pearlsì.

Classical or baroque?

Classic pearls are perfectly spherical or almost, regular, smooth. These are the pearls that are used for classic jewels, such as the timeless necklace of regular-sized pearls or, more often, of increasing volume (the largest in front and the smallest towards the neck). Baroque pearls, on the other hand, are those that have a different shape from the simple one of the sphere. They don’t necessarily have to be asymmetrical or have irregular volumes. They are usually freshwater, while round and large pearls grow in salt water. In most cases, baroque pearls have an elongated sphere shape, are asymmetrical and do not have a smooth surface. This type of pearl was often used in Art Nouveau and Victorian jewelry, because romantically their shape resembles that of a tear. Baroque pearls are often cataloged with different names, related to their place of origin or their shape. Here are the most common names:

Miluna’s new jewels

Miluna jewels, brand of the company Cielo Venezia 1270, are made in Italy. Not only does the name of the brand refer to the love poem of a seventeenth-century Venetian nobleman, but the entire Miluna jewelry chain takes place in Italy, from conception to artisanal production. The charm of the Venice Lagoon does the rest. Miluna (which derives from the invocation “oh, my Moon”, referring to the beloved bridesmaid), has been a historical sponsor of the Miss Italy contests for years. And for the competition she also created a crown with 2,550 brilliant-cut diamonds in 18-karat white gold. Miluna’s specialties are two: pearls and classic jewels for ceremonies, gifts or anniversaries, in white gold and diamonds or with precious gems.

But the brand also offers jewelry lines at more affordable prices, such as the Eleganza collection, made of Korean mesh of gold-plated silver in three different colors, to which a pearl is added. The pearl bracelets are now also offered in combination with pendants that serve to personalize the jewel.

24 things you don’t know about the pearl necklace

//

Do you want to buy a pearl necklace? Or do you have earrings with pearls in your drawer, or a ring with a beautiful pearl? Like diamonds, pearls are one of the classics of jewelry. They adorned the jewels of the ancients, men and women. And until a century ago the only ones available were natural ones, while today cultivated ones are more common. But do you think you know everything about pearls? Here are 24 aspects of pearls you probably don’t know yet.

If you want to know more about pearls read: All about pearls.

1 A graduated string of pearls most often has at least 3 millimeters of difference between the ends at the center of the necklace.
2 Fresh and salt water pearls seem quite similar to an inexperienced eye, but in reality they are classified as different biological families. Those of fresh water are part of the Unionidae family. Salt water pearls, on the other hand, grow inside the oysters of the Pteriidae family, which live in the oceans.
3 Pearls are an answer to an intruder: they form, in fact, inside the shell as a defense mechanism against something irritating that creeps into the oyster. The mollusk creates the pearl just to seal the irritation.

4 The brilliance of the pearls depends on the reflection, the refraction and the diffraction of light from the translucent layers: the layers in the pearl are thinner and numerous, the luster is finer.
5 The iridescence of pearls is caused by the superposition of successive layers, which breaks the light that falls on the surface.
5 Pearls (especially freshwater pearls) can be tinged with yellow, green, blue, brown, pink, purple or black.
6 Since pearls are mainly made of calcium carbonate, they can be dissolved in vinegar or lemon juice: do not let them fall into the salad!

7 Freshwater pearls are formed in lakes, rivers, ponds and other freshwater basins found in warmer climates. But they are also found in colder and more temperate areas such as Scotland (where they are protected by law).
8 Most of the freshwater cultured pearls sold today do not come from Japan, but from China.
9 However, Japan retains its status as a pearl processing center and imports most of the Chinese Akoya pearl production. These pearls are then worked (often simply ordered), re-labeled as a product of Japan and exported.

10 The commonly held belief that a grain of sand acts as an irritant to stimulate the growth of a natural pearl is actually a very rare case.
11 How do you distinguish a natural pearl from a cultivated one? An X-ray examination is the safest system: nucleated cultured pearls are often preformed, since they tend to follow the shape of the nucleus that has been implanted. Natural ones no.
12 The cultivated pearl can be harvested in a period ranging from 12 to 18 months for the Akoya, 2-4 years for Tahiti and the South Sea and 2-7 years for fresh water.

13 A simple method to recognize the real pearls from imitations is to rub two spheres against each other. The false pearls are completely smooth, while the natural or cultivated ones are composed of mother-of-pearl plates, which make them slightly rough.
14 There are very few necklaces with natural pearl strands and they are often sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
15 Natural pearls are very rare: one of the places where they are still found is in the seas off Bahrain and Australia.

16 Black pearls (called Tahitian pearls) are very rarely really black: they usually have shades of green, purple, aubergine, blue, gray, silver or peacock (a mix of different shades, like a peacock feather).
17 The South Sea pearls are the largest and rarest of cultured pearls, which makes them the most precious.
18 Pearls defined as Margaritas are extremely difficult to find today and are known for their unique yellowish color. The most famous Margarita necklace is the one that the then Venezuelan president Romulo Betancourt gave to Jacqueline Kennedy when she and her husband, President John F. Kennedy, were on an official visit to Venezuela.

19 Usually the invention of the process to cultivate pearls is attributed to Mikimoto. In fact, the way to get cultured pearls was developed by the British biologist William Saville-Kentin Australia and brought to Japan by Tokichi Nishikawa and Tatsuhei Mise. Nishikawa obtained the patent in 1916 and married Mikimoto’s daughter. Which was able to use Nishikawa’s technology.
20 For many traders and wholesalers of cultured pearls, the favorite weight measure used for loose pearls and pearl strands is momme, a measure traditionally used in Japan, which is equivalent to 3.75 grams.

21 The gloss is the main factor in differentiating the quality of the pearls according to the jewelers.

Anello con perla dorata South Sea e diamanti

22 But given the same factors, the dimension determines the value: bigger is the pearl, more precious it is.
23 Pearls are available in eight basic forms: round, semicircular, button, drop, pear, oval, baroque, rimmed and double boulder.
24 The pearl necklaces are classified into different types, according to the size: a collar (25-33 centimeters) often with several strands of pearls, a choker (35-41 centimeters), princess (43-48 centimeters) and matinees (50- 60 centimeters). Finally, the work size (70 to 90 centimeters) and sautoir, or pearl rope, (about 115 centimeters) are rarer.
