Buying Guide. If you want a jewel with a peridot a certain size, know that the commercial quality is divided into classes A and B. The first are clear, without brown tones. Those quality B have a paler color or have visible inclusions. It is also a relatively inexpensive gemstone if the weight is under 4 carats. Over 10 carat peridot become very rare and expensive.

Why is it called peridot? The origin of the name peridot is not known precisely. Certainly, however, the stone was appreciated in ancient times. According to some, the word derives from an alteration of the Anglo-Norman language pedoretés, translated into classical Latin with pæderot. Others indicate that the French name peridot derives from the Arabic word faridat, which means jewel. The stone, in fact, has been known for thousands of years: it was already used by the ancient Egyptians around 1500 BC, who called peridot the “gem of the sun”. Cleopatra also apparently liked these gems, who flaunted them.The largest olivine peridot is a 310-carat (62 grams) specimen in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC.

The birthstone of August is peridot (see also: All about the peridot). Probably for this reason the British designer Annoushka Ducas has chosen the summer month to present her new collection that uses, of course, the peridot. The collection was created in collaboration with Fuli Gemstones, a Chinese mining company, which holds the mining license for a large and rich peridot mine in the Changbai mountains, China. The gems of this mine have a particularly intense and pleasant color.

The result of the agreement with Annoushka is the Radiance collection, inspired by the Art Deco style, that is, with very marked geometries, intense colors, frames, well-defined corners. Alongside the peridot, the designer used pink and malachite sapphires, mounted on recycled 18-karat gold. The ring of the series has a peculiarity: the upper part detaches from the stem and can become a pendant to be attached to the necklace. The collection also includes earrings, even these decomposable: they can be worn as pendants, or simply buttoned.

There are two things that make a woman happy: jewels and chocolate. Instead, there is only one woman who has decided to combine the two elements: Doris Hangartner. She has a very varied curriculum behind her: after graduating in Gemology at the Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica (California), she worked for jewelry companies, in particular as a gemologist, but also dealt with antiques and vintage jewelry.

How she came up with the idea of combining chocolate and jewelry is not known. But the marriage is part of a broader philosophy of the brand, which is based in Zurich, Switzerland (not surprisingly the homeland of chocolate). Doris Hangartner’s goal, in fact, is to identify a person’s personality in order to find affinity with a gem. In short, a jewelry that involves the five senses. For example, peridot inspires smooth flavor of matcha (finely ground powder of green tea leaves, with the same color as the bud) combined with notes of jasmine and cedar surround the toasted almond in a special praline. Or a shocking but delicious splash of vodka, absinthe, peppermint and lime are the components of another praline, filled with liquid alcohol and dedicated to Paraiba tourmaline, the house specialty. Gem chocolates are handmade by a traditional Maison in Zurich (they are excellent, we can assure you). In short, each chocolate represents a gem: the imperial topaz (chocolate, honey, incense, orange and elderflower), red spinel (nougat, hot pepper and szechuan pepper, star anise, sesame and fleur de sel).

But, perhaps to prevent someone from eating a peridot or sniffing a garnet, you decided to evolve the idea. For example, combining essences and scented candles with jewels, to satisfy the olfactory buds. Without forgetting hearing, with Gem Dance, Let’s Tango, a ballet inspired by red spinel and tango music, created with internationally renowned dancers and choreographers such as Oleksandr and Sergiy Kirichenko and the Stradivari Quartett. Ah, yes, there are also jewels: after this premise, it is easy to understand that stones have a prominent role. They are lively, strong stones with personality. From painters to sweets. Licia Mattioli’s passion is not only for great art, to which she has dedicated numerous collections in the past years. Now also ticks for sweets, which are transformed into jewelry and, in particular, in rings, necklaces and chandelier earrings. The new collection of the Maison of Turin is called, in fact, Candy.
Candies more for the liveliness of the appearance than for the shape, which has the well-defined style of the brand. The rings recall, in fact, those of the Reve_r collection, but this time with the stones arranged in a traditional way, like small cabochons to punctuate the surface of the jewel. In short, no longer the sharp back, the so-called culet of the stone, but the upper part, rounded and soft. Dior Granville is inspired by flowers and colors of a Normandy villa’s garden where Christian Dior spent his childhood. The house of Granville, now a museum, is the place chosen by the artistic director Victoire de Castellane to tell the 12 jewels unveiled during Paris couture week. Beryl, peridot, aquamarine, tanzanite, chrysoberyl, pink tourmaline, rubellite: in all pieces, all perfectly asymmetrical, there are the designer’s favourite stones, assembled in a way in which each every reflection and shade are clearly visible. Thus, the vivid hues are aligned to the most watery shades, in different cuts and setting styles. Te outcome? No one color dominates another in rare equilibrium in which all stand out. Not so easy to create such a rhythm with stones that seat beside to one another, and the marquise or princess cuts are next to pear-shaped, oval or round gems. Furthemore, the pairs of earrings that appear similar, to look carefully show details, although minimal, but different. In fact, if stone’s figure and size are equal the varieties change. For instance, on the right there is a tanzanite, while on the left a rubellite, or if there two same stones in one half is larger and in the other is stretched. In a single jewel you can have two different setting styles: a rub over and claw. Yet, in this anarchy of shapes and colors, each element has the same chance to shine. A very democratic idea, even if the price of fine jewelry, like its rainbow tones, is pleasantly jarring. M.B.

[wzslider]Fresca, luminosa, allegra: la collezione di alta gioielleria per la primavera estate 2014 di Dolce & Gabbana è un trionfo di colori vivaci nelle brillanti tonalità di zaffiri, ametiste, quarzi citrini, peridoto e acquamarina. E se il design presenta sempre segni barocchi, con tanto tantissimo oro a 18 carati, il tratto inconfondibile dei due stilisti siciliani, i grandi volumi sono alleggeriti da motivi floreali, per esempio le icone delle scorse stagioni come le croci bizantine sono in filigrana modellata con pistilli e petali che conferiscono un aspetto lieve ed estremamente portabile.
