There are jewellery composed of gems so close to each other that it seems a continuous surface: is the effect of a pavé done perfectly, which transforms a flower, an insect or any shape in an object of unique harmony. The outcome is the result of many hours of work and great skills. The Tubetto collection by De Grisogono is a textbook example: the blacks diamond of the ring below, although of different dimension, are all on the same level. Getting this kind of quality is much more difficult with colorless diamonds on white gold, because with colored stones, if the base is good, you can improve the pavé by coloring the metal. Do you know how the stones are set in a ring? The settings are not all the same. Here’s what setting means and what the differences are ♦ ︎

Do you know what kind of workmanship the ring you wear has? If you also use a gem, it is likely that the craftsman who made the ring placed it with a setting. But perhaps you don’t know that there are different types of embedding, that is, the arrangement of the stones on and inside the metal that contains them: an operation that is performed by hand with the necessary skill. The setting is used to hold the stones in the jewels: the space that houses the stone is called a bezel.

Semi Bezel. The “open” embedding means that the stone is placed in a perforated metal and receives the light from the reverse. Basically the rays of light also hit the back or side of the stone, which is embedded in a metal circle (if the stone is round). Of course, for this type of setting, the stone must be extremely transparent, like a diamond. In this way the light can pass through the stone and be reflected outside. The advantage of this type of processing is that the stone is brighter, since it also receives the rays of light from the lower surface. On the other hand, the jeweler’s work must be done very carefully, to prevent the stone from accidentally coming out of the metal.

Bezel ring. The setting is obviously the opposite of the semi bezel setting. It is used, in fact, when the stone mounted in the jewel is not particularly transparent and, therefore, does not need to let the light filter through it. With this setting, the stone housing is closed, with a metal base on which the stone rests. It is also the most common case of setting, especially in jewelry that uses semi-precious stones.

Pavé. When so many small stones are placed next to each other, so much so that it is difficult to see the metal that contains them, a pavé is obtained: it can be limited to a row or cover an entire surface of the jewel. The pavé can surround a larger stone , thus creating a bezel that is formed from other gems instead of metal.

Riviére. The setting of this type is made up of a row of gems, almost always brilliant cut diamonds, which are arranged along a straight line: also in this case with little visible metal. Unlike the classic riviére used, for example, for necklaces, in this type of setting the stones do not always have a scalar dimension. That is, all stones of the same size are used.

The novelties also included a taste of the Lunaria Alta collection, which is now completed in a line of organic high jewelery. The collection is the first-degree daughter of Lunaria, one of the brand’s best-known collections, presented in 2014 by Marco Bicego. Lunaria does not refer to the satellite of the Earth, but to a plant classified in the Cruciferous family – Brassicaceae. Although related to cabbage and broccoli, lunaria is an ornamental plant.

For us, High Jewelery is the art of enhancing the character, elegance and uniqueness of each single gem. Nature with its organic forms and colored gems have always been a great source of inspiration for me and we remain very faithful to these themes, as they offer us the opportunity to highlight the extraordinary craftsmanship we use.

One of the funniest collections by Roberto Coin, Pois Moi, is renewed and adds a new line. Pois Moi Luna adds variations to the collection that was born from the inspiration of the old sixties television screens. Those square boxes, but with a rounded edge, have been transformed by the Venetian jeweler into a series of jewels with a hint of non-conformism. In the first version of Pois Moi, gold was an absolute element. Since she set sail in the sea of jewelry, Annamaria Cammilli’s Velaa collection has landed in numerous variations. The soft design, which characterizes the Florentine maison, the use of shades of gold and stone pavé have now been applied to a new line of the collection: Velaa Color. The design remains minimal, but adds shades of sapphires, rubies, emeralds and white or fancy diamonds to the warm shades of gold. The different elements are combined in a wide variety of color combinations that play on the combination of precious stones and the typical velvety gold finish, one of the hallmarks of the Maison.

The stones make up strips of pavé between the wavy layers of gold. In particular, a wide variety of rings is presented: for each color combination there are four variations in thickness, from six layers up to a single band of white gold, or yellow, black, champagne pink, beige. The different colors of gold are, in fact, one of the most appreciated characteristics of Annamaria Cammilli.

Now that it has also arrived on the platform of an international marketplace that sells via the web, Gilberto Cassola, a historic company from Valenza, certainly has better visibility abroad. The brand specializes in refined goldsmith work aimed in particular at the US market (where it sells almost 50% of its jewels), in addition to the European one. The company was founded in 1965 by Gilberto Cassola together with his partner Luciano Provera (Cassola & Provera was the name until 1982). Like many other artisan workshops in the area, Cassola has long carried out work on behalf of third parties, even for large Maison such as Van Cliff & Arpels and Cartier. In particular, among the specialties of the company there are jewels with diamond pavé.

Gilberto Cassola personally took care of designing models and managing the company: the classic handyman entrepreneur. The two partners split in 1982 and, in the 1990s, with the entry into the company of their son Graziano Cassola, the decision to produce jewelry with their own brand also came.

Galattica, on the other hand, is the name that distinguishes rings with shapes that resemble the rings of Saturn, these too with the addition of Pavè Polvere di Sogni. Also new is the Tour ring, a spiral that wraps the finger, always with the addition of the typical Pesavento pavé. Torchon is, instead, the name of a series of chains with pendants, also in this case available in different silver colors and with the addition of pavé. Non poteva essere diversamente, ma quello che stupisce è lo sforzo creativo per esaltare la pietra centrale di ciascun gioiello, con nastri d’oro che sembrano girare vorticosamente attorno alla gemma, selezionata per la sua luce e purezza. Una vera rivoluzione artistica per chi ha sempre privilegiato montature essenziali, ma l’esperimento sembra riuscito perché gli spazi vuoti della lavorazione openwork danno una sensazione di freschezza e leggerezza.
