Possession is the name of a historic Piaget collection. The Swiss Maison, which is part of the Richemont group, has always focused on this series of jewels, which have a different design than usual, with a movable, rotating part. Mattioli forever with the new Navettes

According to legend, in jewelry the navette shape, also called marquise, is connected to the Marquise de Pompadour, official mistress of the French king Louis XV from 1745 to 1751. For the noblewoman, the man who went down in history as the King Sole asked that the diamonds be cut to model the mouth of the marquise. Since then that elongated shape, like two opposite brackets that match and end with two points, have been a cornerstone in the history of jewelry. And with good reason Mattioli has adopted that oblong shape for his Navettes collection, with new pieces presented in Vicenzaoro together with the Vertigo line (which we will discuss in another article).

The collection adopts 18-karat rose gold and is enriched by new models with natural mother-of-pearl along with edges of white diamonds, or with full pavé diamonds. However, the shape of the shuttles and of the shuttle rings is revisited with sinuous curves that further soften the geometry. The collection includes earrings, rings, rigid and soft bracelets, as well as sautoir necklaces handcrafted in the Maison’s Turin workshop.

Not surprisingly, the company boasts one of the best Italian manufacturers in the sector. And, in addition to offering collections with its own brand, it also produces on behalf of prestigious jewelery houses. “In a few years we have reached about 400 employees,” says the entrepreneur, soul, mind and heart of the brand, Licia Mattioli. Which, perhaps, in her heart she does not regret too much the sliding door that she removed a couple of years ago from the presidency of Confindustria (the Italian association of major companies) to which she was a candidate and of which she would have been natural president. Life, on the other hand, due to a cynical and cheating destiny (avoiding personalizing the story), has taken a different turn. A bad luck for the Italian business system, a fortune for the Mattioli company created only a few years ago.

The story is well known: Luciano Mattioli, Licia’s father, in 1995 took over the Antica Ditta Marchisio, a historic company founded in 1860, which worked for clients such as Bulgari, Cartier or Tiffany, just to name three. In 2013 the company was sold to the Swiss Richemont group. But from a spin-off of that same reality Mattioli was born. And it is for this reason that the Mattioli jewelry production still boasts the historic 1TO punch of 1860 on the yellow metal. Translated for non-experts: it remains the first company in Turin authorized to “sign” worked gold as a guarantee. With the pleasure of contradicting those who are amazed at the entrepreneurial skills of a woman (there are still some examples of the category), Licia Mattioli in less than ten years has therefore built a solid, innovative and dynamic brand.

Diane Kordas explains that she wants to create jewelry with simple designs, but with a touch of modern glamor, to make each piece unique and at the same time rich. The mix used by the designer reflects her goals: black, white and colored diamonds, sapphires and other semi-precious stones, all in an 18-karat gold set, especially in pink.

As is easy to deduce from her name, Diane is of Greek origin. But she, even though she occasionally returns to her homeland, she graduated from Parsons School of Design and began her career in New York, where she resides when she is not staying in her home in London. Her roots emerge, however, in the choice of some icons, such as bracelets inspired by popular traditions. Alongside shapes that are reminiscent of myths or superstitions, however, volumes with aggressive edges and geometries also appear, such as in the earcuffs or ring of the Eclipse line. The rings inspired by the animal world may, on the other hand, recall a type of ancient warrior helmets. Who knows if that was Diane’s intent.

The 9 colors of gold

It’s easy to say gold. The metal most used in luxury jewelry, considered the most precious asset for centuries, kept in ingots in bank vaults, actually has many faces. Because since it was used to make rings and necklaces, bracelets and earrings, gold has undergone several transformations. First of all, it can be more or less pure.

When a piece of jewelry is 100% gold it has 24 karats, while if it is 75% it is 18 karat. The remaining 25% is made up of other metals.

A percentage of 58% indicates a 14-karat alloy and, finally, when only 38% of gold remains, you have 9 karats. Furthermore, when it is alloyed with other metals, gold can change color, depending on the type of metal that is added. Everyone knows the three main shades: yellow, white and pink gold, colors that can be more or less intense. In reality, many jewelers use different percentages, which also give the gold completely different shades. In the diagram on this page we have summarized the main combinations that arise from the union of gold with other metals, in particular silver and copper.

In nature, in fact, gold has an intense yellow color, tending to orange, and is a very soft metal, which is easily deformed (1 gram can be transformed into a sheet of 1 square meter).

1 Yellow gold
The more intense yellow, the purer it is, as found in nature. The 99% pure gold is 24 carat and is exclusively deep yellow. Yellow gold is also the most used in jewelry. There are countries, such as India, which prefer gold in this color which is its natural hue. Yellow gold can also be of a less intense color, especially when alloyed with silver. Obviously the yellow gold with fewer carats, that is in alloy with other metals, has a more easily less intense color.

2 White Gold
It is an alloy with a white metal. When it comes to old jewels, it is often nickel (which however can cause allergies, on average to one in eight people), or manganese, palladium, but also silver. The alloy of gold and nickel is highly valued in jewelry because it makes the metal more durable for rings and brooches. On the other hand, gold with palladium is softer and makes setting stones easier. White gold is often not perfectly white, but has shades of yellow, brown or pink.

3 and 4 Pink gold and red
It is an alloy that uses copper. It was very popular in Russia in the nineteenth century and has come back into vogue in recent years. 5 Green gold

6 Gray Gold
The gray color is especially used for jewelry with a modern design. This color is obtained with a mix of yellow gold and palladium or silver, manganese and copper. If the other metals are added in minimal quantities, the color is closest to that of white gold.

7 Purple Gold
Violet or purple gold is obtained from an alloy that includes a particular type of aluminum. But purple gold is more fragile than other gold alloys and for this reason it is not often used: a sharp blow could cause the metal and, therefore, the jewel to shatter. 8 Blue gold
It is used rather rarely, but it is undoubtedly surprising. 9 Black gold

Vhernier, blue rhapsody for three rings

Blue like the sky, the sea and the color of the year Pantone: Vhernier proposes again jewels with the most fashionable hue. These are three rings, all composed of the same mix: pink gold and lapis lazuli. The intense blue together with the hue of gold, in addition to referring to the atmospheres of ancient Egypt, evokes art deco atmospheres. As for the Eclisse ring: balanced game of symmetries and volumes interrupted by a clean cut (Vherner compares it to a painting by Fontana), which reveals two faces from the intense blue of lapis lazuli that are reflected in each other while the crystal di rocca gives life to the famous Transparencies of Vhernier.
