Gigi Ferranti, jewels-architecture in Brooklyn

The classical architectural lines merged in the jewelery of Gigi Ferranti ♦ ︎

The name is Gigi Ferranti, but her name is Gina. No gender confusion: Gina Ferranti is the designer who founded the Gigi Ferranti brand, in Brooklyn, New York. The designer has Italian origins, but is now perfectly American, even if she does not forget her childhood. She started working in the fashion industry, but then graduated in gemology and worked for David Yurman, precisely in the selection of quality control of stones. An activity that has served a lot for its jeweler activity, which began in 2015.

Gina defines herself as a Renaissance woman, because she has many passions and many skills.

For example, she is an expert in architecture, and in her jewelry she transfers some of the geometric lines typical of the structure of the buildings, in particular the classical ones, with pediments and columns. She loves the classic style, whether it is the ancient Greece or the architecture of Palladio. Needless to say, he loves symmetry and care of proportions. Another aspect that loves is the ability to stack the jewels. The rings with the zigzag profile are an example.

Mateo’s American Dream

The American dream applied to jewelry. It is the story of Matthew Harris, born and raised in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Son of a seamstress. And, in 2009, founder of the Mateo brand in New York. In the US, he arrived at the age of 16 to attend college. But his passion was (and still is) jewels. Matthew is a self-taught designer, and so in his youth he spent much of his time in the Big Apple jewelry district learning the technique. Once he got the skills, he decided to go it alone.

Having founded his brand, he initially focused on men’s jewelry. Then, he expanded his production to the female world. Her jewels use 14-karat gold, a choice that allows prices to be anchored low, but also diamonds, pearls and semi-precious stones, such as quartz in its various forms, or topaz, malachite and aquamarine. She opened her boutique in the heart of the city, in SoHo, in December 2016. The streets of Jamaica are getting further and further away.

Stone’s fantasies by Stephen Dweck

Stones from around the world, also little known, in creative mix of Stephen Dweck

He participated in the event organized in New York by the CFDA, the association which brings together 508 American designers, including 82 jewelers. He was born in Brooklyn, and so he had felt at home. Stephen Dweck is the kind of designer jewelry that has an artistic vocation: painter and sculptor, Stephen decided to use his creative vision to make jewelry.

He has already had a career that began in the eighties, but has not ceased to renew itself. It makes jewelry with a fresh style and, at the same time, literary. The Stephen Dweck’s love for nature in all its forms has led him also to collect many different types of minerals, stones that are barely known and which give a unique appearance to its collections. Not surprisingly that is was been defined as a novelist of the stones, which he collects around the world, during his travels. So, he says, the first question that they make is: Where did you get this stone? But it really is not so important “where” what counts is the result.

Chrishabana, punk & tribal for unusual Millenials

The aggressive and alternative jewelery for Millenials of Chrishabana, brand born in the East End in New York ♦

The major jewelery brands complain of poor passion of Millenials, those born between 1980 and 2000, to the classic art of jewelery products. Diamond rings, pearl necklaces, and even the high jewelry, seems don’t inspire this class of people. No wonder, then, that arise new brands looking to tune with who sports tattoos and piercings. An example is Chrishabana, jewelry brand based in the East Village, in New York. Just take a look at the brand communication campaign to figure out who the audience is.

Although, in reality, even punk has become part of the big show of fashion. Chrishabana, launched in 2012, wants to please boys, girls who like an aggressive look and the jewelry reserved for even the smallest part of the body, as is the tradition for those who love piercings and nose setting. Chris, who lived between the Philippines and the United States, however, is not a Millennial, since he is 45. But he understand young people very well.

The jewels with the secret of Santo by Zani

She studied jewelry design at Bowdoin College, Maine, and after graduation trained in jewelry design with Cecilia Bauer, known for her classic jewelry making techniques. But then she worked in public relations. A short-lived betrayal: Zani Gugelmann immediately returned to her first love, even if she then left Peru, following her maternal origins. And upon returning to the States she launched a jewelry line in 2002 and, in 2016, she founded the Santo by Zani brand, which she defines as a conceptual jewelry collection.

Curiously, she is inspired by the design of the rings that in the sixteenth century hid poison inside them. The concept is used by Santo by Zani above all for the pendants, which can be worn open and have the shape of stars, flowers or crosses, or closed. Each piece is designed with complex mechanical movement and delicate engineering of pins, axes and hinges. The jewels are in 14 and 18 karat gold, with precious stones and ceramic inserts.

The jewels of Eva and Ava

The delicate jewels of the twins Eva and Ava Bai, in New York and their Vale Jewelry ♦

They’re called Eva and Ava, and are twins. It sounds like the beginning of a fairy tale, but it’s the reality: Eva and Ava Bai are two twins of Asian origin that are based in New York and in 2005 they launched the brand Vale Jewelry. As almost always happens to the twins, are pretty close-knit, so that they sign together the collections are based on a delicate balance between stones and gold.

In their study of Manhattan, though, they want to emphasize that their personalities are completely autonomous: ok, they are tuned, but they are not symbiotics. The professional path, in any case, was synchronized: after graduation diplomas at Carnegie Mellon University, Ava and Eve have both discovered a passion for jewelry design and, therefore, have conducted post-graduate studies in metallurgy and gemology. They prefer stones from sweets and ambiguous colors: gray diamonds, tourmalines no garish shades, quartz. Their favorite gem is the ring: is the type with the largest number of variants in their lookbook. Their jewels were worn by Sarah Jessica Parker, Kelly Ripa, Lena Dunham, Gabrielle Union, Malin Akerman, Miranda Kerr, Candice Swanepoel, Behati Prinsloo, and AnnaSophia Robb.

The ancient but new jewels by Chris Davies

The unique pieces by Chris Davies, a New York designer who uses ancient techniques for his jewelery ♦ ︎

In New York there is a jewel artist who loves to discover and use ancient processing techniques. It is, sure, an attitude not widespread in the city that more than any other is a symbol of dynamism, change, speed. Chris Davies, however, in college has studied ancient civilizations and art history. When he become a jeweler, he decided to combine his passions and creates pieces made up of hundreds of tiny 18-karat gold beads (the granulation technique used in ancient Greece), or he creates jewels with the cloisonné technique, a particular enamelling, difficult realization, which dates back to ancient Egypt, was in vogue during the Byzantine Empire and more recently in China. Technique that used for the recent collection, Silk Road.

An art form which, he explained, will soon disappear, because only the oldest artisans are still able to use. Or Davies weaves 18-karat gold pearls on steel wires. Each piece, he explains, takes two to six months to complete. There are also jewels made of rare stones, selected for their particular shape or appearance: tourmalines, demantoids, citrines (but green), moonstones (but peach-colored), sapphires (but orange) and so on. An example is the Delos necklace, made with the 18-carat white gold granulation technique, hematite, white topaz and blue-green amethyst. Prices? Chris Davies’ jewels are unique pieces, like the price of his jewels: on average from 10,000 to 20,000 dollars.

The Hieroglyphic Jewels of Dyne

Her name is long, like the story it represents: Sarah Ysabel Dyne Narici. She is a designer who lives and works in New York, the daughter of a physiology professor and an Anglo-Singaporean biochemist. She grew up in Milan but she moved to England when she was ten. She attended Saint Martins in London, where she graduated in Jewelery Design and, subsequently, she graduated from Gia in New York. Before founding her own brand, which is called Dyne, her maternal surname, she worked for Maisons such as Alexander McQueen, Stephen Webster, Marina B and Lorraine Schwartz. In short, you have accumulated many experiences and cultures. Her little Maison is only a couple of years old, yet her jewelry style is already celebrated in fashion magazines.

In fact, the jewels created by the designer stand out immediately, because they are also encrypted messages. Or, more precisely, they have a series of icons engraved on the surface, in the style of ancient Egypt. In short, they are hieroglyphs, but supplied without a Rosetta stone to decipher their meaning. However, they are quite original and, in intention, constitute a sort of bridge between the past and the future. In any case, rings and medals with hieroglyphics are not the only production of Dyne, which also offers custom-made wedding rings, or jewels with a careful selection of high quality gems.

The pink super diamond stolen in Qatar by a psychic

We have written it many times: be wary of those who say that stones have special powers, magical effects, healthy influences. You may be dealing with not only a cheater, but also a thief. The incredible story of the stolen pink diamond proves it. Unveiled in November by Christie’s as a Fancy Vivid Pink Diamond set in a ring, with impressive VVS1 clarity, weighing 13.15 carats, and an estimate of up to $35 million, it was scheduled to be auctioned December 6 at New York. Instead, he disappeared from the radar. The major auction house did not consider explaining why. But there is a reconstruction that seems incredible.

According to some documents filed in court and discovered for the first time by the Court Watch organization, specialized in the analysis of judicial documents, the diamond was allegedly stolen in Doha, Qatar. The diamond would have been bought by a sheik, rich but somewhat naive. In fact, he lent the diamond to a man who introduced himself as John Lee, who billed himself as an online psychic. An employee of the sheikh then sent to mr. Lee some jewels, including the pink diamond, to “cleanse them of evil spirits.” But the real magic was making the jewels disappear. Don’t laugh, please.

Pearls and design with Mizuki

The delicate and refined pearls by the Japanese-American designer Mizuki Goltz ♦

The cult of pearls has arrived in the West from the East. In particular, from Japan, where over a century ago the cultivation of molluscs that generate these delicate spheres began. It is not surprising, therefore, that Mizuki Goltz uses mainly pearls for her jewels. The designer is a perfect bridge between refined and essential Japanese design and the minimal taste of the West, especially that of the North. She explains that her collections reflect her cultural background.

Mizuki graduated in sculpture at the School of Visual Arts in New York, but then decided to combine her love for fashion and the arts with jewelry, along with fellow artist Alan Goltz. The adventure began in 1996 in a loft in downtown Soho, New York, and has grown to become a life in New York and California. But she often returns to his hometown, Tokyo, to regain contact with oriental culture. Her seemingly simple jewels have received many awards, such as the Town and Country 2017 Pearls of the Year award. In 2016, she won the Pearl Design award at Centurion and the prestigious Pearl Design award at the Couture Show in Las Vegas. Prices of her jewels (on sale online): on average from 1500 to 30,000 dollars.

Vittorio B., from Valenza to New York

Vittorio B. That is Vittorio Bassan, an Italian jeweler born in the cradle of fine jewelry, Valenza Po, Piedmont, but who moved to New York. The jeweler grew up in a district where jewelery was the main activity: his mother, father and seven uncles created jewelery in the family workshop. However, he decided to take flight: he obtained a Master of Fine Arts in jewelry design and production, began an apprenticeship as a gemstone setter in the family business and began designing jewelry, handcrafting original and customized pieces .

Vittorio then moved to Los Angeles to explore the American luxury market and won over several clients. In 2013 he caught the attention of Van Cleef & Arpels. So he decided to work in the flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York. An experience that also taught the designer the commercial aspects of the jeweler’s business and that prompted him to found his own brand, Vittorio B. The Italian designer launched his jewelry line Fit For Life Jewels in 2018, which uses its patented extendable jewelry system, with links and an internal spring in titanium or stainless steel mounted internally to obtain rings and bracelets that adapt to the size of the fingers and the wrist.

The jewels and the precious piercing by Maria Tash

Jewels capable of targeting or rather to penetrate: Maria Tash is famous for her precious piercing and, more generally, to the rings that do not just shove in the earlobes, but also in the nasal septum, or navel. After studying in London, more than 20 years ago she discovered the charm of the kind of jewelry that now it is very fashionable. The nail cover rings and earrings for AirPods by Bijules

The designer and former DJ in New York, Jules Kim, who founded the Bijules brand: a jewelry outside the conventions

Earrings that serve not to lose the AirPods, rings that replace nail polish: these are the unusual jewels of Bijules. On the pages of gioiellis.com often we tell the stories of new designers. There is a story, for example, which is replicable for a large number of new jewelers. It thus plays: from childhood wanted to make the jewelry designer. Then, he/she has attended the Central Saint Martins or something of similar, finally after a degree from Gia gave birth to their brand. In a nutshell, the curriculum that is expected of those who create jewelry on the international stage. But there are exceptions.

Jules Kim is one of these «black sheep», that is innovative, of the jewelry. Until about ten years ago she made the promoter and DJ in New York nightclubs. She had her fun until, by a hard choice, decided that the world of jewelry was the most asleep all ( “it’s boring”, she said) and she, accustomed to the night watches, he could give a jolt. The result is Bijoules, a brand that plays on the name of the founder and the word bijoux. She has had her reason: you can not say that Jules Kim jewels are conventional.

Also among the magnificent jewels are a 2.21 carat (1,200,000-1,800,000) fancy deep blue brilliant cut oval colored diamond ring, a Diamond Torque bangle, set with an internally flawless heart-shaped diamond D color of 50.05 carats (3,700,000-4,500,000), and The De Beers Yellow, an exceptional Fancy Vivid Yellow, Internally Flawless emerald-cut diamond of 13.75 carats (1,100,000–1,800,000).

Alongside these six-figure pieces, the auction includes a selection of iconic jewels by Van Cleef and Arpels. An exceptional lot is the Bouquet brooch with retro sapphire, colored sapphire and ruby which was part of the collection of Argentine first lady Evita Perón (60,000-80,000). The use of materials and the overall scale of the brooch is an homage to the retro period. Since it was purchased at an auction from Evita’s personal collection in 1957, it has remained in private hands and has never been worn. Additional Van Cleef & Arpels highlights include the Hawaii Jewelery Suite with Rubies, Sapphires and Diamonds (100,000-150,000) and two examples of the house’s iconic setting technique, the Mystery-Set Flower Brooch with Rubies and Emeralds (400,000 -600,000) and Mystery-Set flower earrings with rubies and diamonds (120,000-180,000). Finally, noteworthy is the Panthère de Cartier bracelet with aquamarine, diamonds and multiple gems, set with a 71.45-carat (200,000-400,000 carat) cabochon aquamarine.
The sale will be on view in New York from December 2-5.

Michelle Fantaci, rights and design

Michelle Fantaci was born in New York but studied goldsmithing in Florence. At 15 she designed her first jewelry and honed her expertise at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. In 2007 she launched her first collection. Her jewels are the result, she says, of a long study, which begins with the drawing of a lot of sketches. She uses 14 and 18 karat gold, in addition to the classic gems, starting with diamonds. Loves small jewels, to be worn all together. She is also a supporter of the civil rights of minorities and does not like to be too diplomatic in expressing her ideas: she is an advocate for women’s rights and the #blacklivesmatter movement.

The designer is also careful to use products with recycled and responsibly sourced materials. Use recycled gold and stones of known origin whenever possible, paying a living wage for the job and avoiding excessive production, Fantaci explained. “My goal is not to hurt. It may seem like a modest goal, but reaching it means looking for alternatives to the status quo ”.

Only natural gems for Xiao Wang

What could the daughter of a recycled metals trader with a mining grandfather do in life? The fate of Xiao Wang, jewelry designer and founder of her small Maison in New York, was written in her destiny. To these roots we must also add to his confessed passion for manga and pop art. But, in truth, the designer’s story does not end here, because before focusing on jewels, which are also distributed through large online platforms, Xiao Wang was also an actress and model: she also studied fashion design at Fit in New York.

Xiao Wang’s jewels are made of recycled gold, but another (rather rare) aspect is the rule of using natural colored gemstones, that is, not treated with chemical products, oils or heated to make the color more intense or correct defects. Tourmalines, fancy colored diamonds, emeralds, are therefore offered in the same conditions as they were in the earth, apart form.

The Accessories Council Excellence Awards (Ace) are awarded annually and are celebrated in an official gala evening (May 3, 2023 also in New York City) attended by large companies, brands and all those who make a lasting and significant contribution to the industry.
