Iridescences in New York

Opal mon amour, in New York. If you pass in the Big Apple, until 23 april the Aaron Faber Gallery has scheduled «Phenomenal Jewelry». How simple guess from the title, this is an exhibition with pieces out of the ordinary, often made with the addition of opal stones (but not only). According to what he told the site BlouinartInfo (www.blouinartinfo.com) Patricia Faber, co-owner of the gallery, “these phenomenal gemstones have unique optical properties, from iridescent stars in the changing lights like the aurora borealis. We wonder if our ancestors considered them magical, for their metaphorical cosmic power. Suggest reflections of light of the moon and sun, rainbows and stars, display colors and play of light”. Not only opals, in the jewels on display they are used other special items, such as moonstones, pearls, star sapphires, and alexandrite. Reflections, glow, colors that fade or changent, at the iridescence are their common denominator. The jewels in the Faber Gallery were made by 21 artists, including Claudio Pino, Glenda Arentzen, Tom Munsteiner, and Katherine Jetter. Federico Graglia

Christie’s with an exceptional ruby

A ring with a large ruby, the Ruby Jubilee, will be the major piece of the auction of Magnificent Jewels programmed by Christie’s for 20 April. Why jubilee? Well, because Christie’s celebrates 250 years. And perhaps not coincidentally will be for sale really exceptional jewelry, 250 lots, including rare diamonds and colored stones, and pieces also signed by Buccellati, Cartier, David Webb, Graff, Harry Winston, Van Cleef & Arpels. Of the jewels auction are part of the collection of Carroll Petrie, heiress disappeared two years ago leaving an estate valued at $ 100 million. According Chtisti’es, Jubilee Ruby is the most important Burmese ruby auctioned in the US for over 25 years. The jewel is signed by the exceptional designer Verdura. The stone is 15.99 carats and is considered a rarity for its exceptional size. It is estimated between 12 and 15 million dollars. Another stone on which will focus attention is a diamond Fancy Intense purple-pink of 10.07 carats, D color perfect, circular cut to 40.43 carats.
According to Rahul Kadakia, international manager of Christie’s jewelry, “the quality of Burmese rubies with more than 15 carats are an absolute rarity in the world of colored gems and the record price of 18.3 million for a 15.04 carat stone to ‘ Christie’s auction in Hong Kong in December 2015 exemplifies the voracious appetite of collectionists for these gems”. The jewelry of auction will be on display the public from April 15 to April 19 in the Rockefeller Center in New York galleries. Federico Graglia

New York, jewels on catwalk

A look at some ‘of fashion jewelry spotted at recent fashion shows in New York for the autumn-winter season 2016. Hard to find a common thread among the proposals, always a bit’ flashy, worn by the models. Bottega Veneta, which exhibited long scarves wrapped around the neck, has focused on a green multistrand necklace, composed of many different shapes and sizes stones tied together like a patchwork. Ferragamo chose long dangling earrings, in a vaguely geometric, minimalist style. The most eclectic necklace, though, is the one that accompanied a Prada fashion show, probably not too comfortable to wear for more than a few minutes. Essential and perhaps the least surprising was Calvin Klein, revisiting choker nineties, with attached heart lock shape. It fits, however, to the staid look of the model. And Tommy Hilfiger? He also chose a style that looks to the past, with earrings that seem to come from the drawer of her aunt. Quite the opposite of Zimmermann, who make jingle the model, which was wearing a steel necklace, perhaps out of a bowling green. She would not pass without arousing suspicion at the airport metal detector. Margherita Donato

Success at Sotheby’s for the Queen of Egypt

The diamond necklace signed by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1939 and belonged to Queen Nazli of Egypt was sold at Sotheby’s for $ 4.3 million. In all, the sale of Magnificent Jewels in New York totaled 52.2 million dollars. The Queen’s necklace was, however, the piece that has attracted more attention. The jewel was commissioned by the Queen for his daughter’s wedding. Sotheby’s had estimated its value between 3.6 and 4.6 million. The price reached, therefore, is closer to the maximum. The jewel is made up of diamonds for 217 carats. At the center there is a round diamond larger, 6 carats, with 118 large round diamonds weighing approximately 134 carats, surrounded by other smaller diamonds baguette-cut and brilliant. Another highlight of the day was to a platinum ring, sapphires and diamonds, sold for 5.1 million dollars. In this case the price has surpassed the estimate (3.5 to 4.5 million). The ring has a sugar loaf sapphire, weighing 25.87 carats in the center, with two diamonds on each side, mounted in platinum. Another ring with diamonds “magnificent” was sold for 4.1 million, even more than this estimate. It has an emerald cut diamond of 38.27 carats, flanked by tapered baguette diamonds weighing approximately 1.25 carats. The year for jewelry at Sotheby’s seems to have ended well. Federico Graglia

Antique rings in New York

The rings are one of the oldest and popular forms of ornament. These jewels have always been worn by both men and women, and not only for an aesthetic whim. The rings were used as markers of status (for example, those with the coat of arms), or for life’s special events (such as engagements or weddings). They are also expressions of their identity, and even talismans. How do they know all the Gioiellis friends, there are infinite forms of this simple geometric structure. Which now is the focus of an exhibition in New York. If this summer you are in the Big Apple, you can visit it: will last until 18 October. The rings on display are from the collection Griffin, name of the mythical creature that has the head of an eagle and the body of the lion. In the medieval tradition, the griffin was often a guardian of treasure and had the ability to find the gold in the rock. The collection includes several rings of past centuries, in particular ancient jewels, medieval, Renaissance. In these old times it has been developed the aesthetics of the rings as we know them now. The exhibition also brings together the shapes of the rings with other works of art, such as painting, metalwork, illuminated manuscripts. For example, few people know that diamonds were very popular in the Roman world. But a diamond was used in the rough, like gems octahedral, because had not yet been invented techniques to cut it. In the ancient world, the only source of diamonds was India and only a small number reached the Roman world through trade routes. The exhibition is organized at The Cloisters museum and gardens, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It is a medieval cloister, all imported from Europe obviously rebuilt with ancient stones, columns, bas-reliefs. Fake but true: only in America… Federico Graglia

Sotheby’s, diamond record: 22 million

It took only three minutes to the Sotheby’s bidder to sell the best lot, a 100.20 carat diamond, of the Magnificent Jewels auction held in New York. A record in the records for the dimensions and for the exceptional characteristics. In fact, it is the largest diamond ever offered in an auction, estimated between 19 and 25 million dollars was sold to 22.1 million, or 20 million Euros, with a price per carat of over 220 thousand euro. And it is a perfect stone, as it is defined by Gary Schuler, head of jewelry department in New York, with its color D, which is the maximum for colorless diamonds, a kind of white blue, Internally Flawless then without internal blemishes, and so clear that it can be compared to water ice. In practice, a great gem. Discovered in a De Beers mine in South Africa was perfectioned, with an emerald cut and polishing, for over a year before being exhibited in various cities among Doha, Dubai, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, London and New York. So, the world trip to attract wealthy buyers has been effective. In this case the buyer, who asked to remain anonymous, has made a phone offer but for four catalogue jewels that have reached the million dollars the offers were made online, for example, the second lot with the higher price, an oval cut diamond of 22.30 carats D color, Internally Flawless, type IIa sold for 3 million Euros or the gold and platinum flower-shaped brooch designed by Schlumberger for Tiffany with a Kashmir sapphire in the center of about 17 carat sold for one million dollars. Always a Kashmir sapphire nearly 12 carat cushion cut set on a ring dated 1915 by Cartier was purchased via web for 1.8 million Euros. In the top 10 group, a ring with a purplish pink pear cut diamond with two side Kashmir cushion-cut sapphires sold for 2.2 million Euros, a necklace by Cartier belonged to Baron Eugene de Rothschild with emeralds and sapphires engraved, which reached 2.4 million Euros and an emerald Colombian sold for 2.6 million Euros. A super diamond of 100 carats

Experts predict that it will be an auction already very hot, despite being scheduled in the middle of spring: will be on sale, in fact, a super diamond of 100 carats. The auctioneer of Sotheby’s, which will sell the gem in New York, April 21, will propose a stone with perfect features, classic cut emerald. The estimated value is, for now, between 19 and 25 million dollars. But often stones of this importance have exceeded all expectations, in part because it is an exceptional diamond. Previously, only five gems of over 100 carats were sold in auction. And this diamond has perfect features (D color, internally pure). The original rough diamond weighed 200 carats and was mined by De Beers in southern Africa. The current owner has spent over a year studying the cutting and polishing of rough diamond before delivering the carved stone at present. The diamond will be exhibited in Dubai, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, London and Doha, before returning to New York where will be in exhibition from April 17. “The color is whiter than white, is devoid of any internal imperfection and so transparent that you can only compare with a pool of ice water. It is the first real diamond, emerald cut, of over 100 carats to be offered at auction,” said Gary Schuler, head of jewelry at Sotheby’s in New York. Federico Graglia
