Amedeo, the cameo is glam

From the school of Neapolitan jewels to the center of New York: is the story of Amedeo, a designer who revived the cameo style. Amedeo is the son of art: when he was 16 he learned the art of carving cameos in the company of his father, M + M Scognamiglio. It is an ancient tradition, dating back to the early 1800s and that continues in his hometown, Torre del Greek. At the age of 29 years Amedeo and his childhood friend, Roberto, have launched a jewelry collection for Faraone Mennella, one of the most famous luxury brands.

In 2006 came the breakthrough, with the opening of a boutique on the Upper East Side of New York: a difficult challenge draw cameos with modern style in the Big Apple. Amedeo Scognamiglio has succeeded: the cameos have become glamorous and trendy. His one-of-a-kind is published on the pages of American Vogue, Paris Vogue, Italian Vogue, Elle, New York Times, W Magazine, V Magazine, Town and Country, Style.com, Departures. And now even on Gioiellis.com. Giulia Netrese

20 bracelets by Federica Rettore

20 bracelets signed by Federica Rector, designer in Milan with passport to the international stage.
Milan is recognized as the capital of design, certainly in Italy, and one of the centers of excellence in the world. Federica Rettore, Milanese designer, is proof that the creative capacity in the capital of Lombardy is not only limited to furniture, to furniture items and fashionable, but extends to jewelry. It’s a different way of interpreting the design of precious objects, far from that of the Italian centers such as Valenza, Vicenza, Arezzo or Torre del Greco. Federica Rettore, precious also from her aspect, has an international feel, just like the city it represents. Her design is away from the tradition of the past, respectable and admirable, but of a completely different kind. Her work is tuned on feel of Tribeca (New York), of Shibuia (Tokyo), of Friedrichstrasse (Berlin). It can’t surprise that she has lived for many years in the United States. Since 1994 the designer has embarked on a road that led up to win, in 2011, a Couture for design in Las Vegas. In between, for three years she also managed the jewelry design team for Gucci.
Yeah, but what is the style of Federica Rettore? She defines her jewelery like tiny sculptures. But it is a reductive description: jewelry are looking for a surprise. As ships on unknown routes, and suddenly they see emerge an island, the Federica Rector jewels take different paths, away from classical music gold, diamonds & c. At the end, the island is different from what one might imagine. The latest works of Federica Rettore were exposed to VicenzaOro, in the disctict which welcomed 12 selected designers. On this page we publish the bracelets: one kind of jewel that is made in so many different ways, however, linked by the same thread. The images are copyright by Federica Rettore. Giulia Netrese

An Edelweiss for Yvone Christa

To the Edelweiss is dedicated the new collection made in silver filigree by Yvone Christa.
The duo of Yvone and Christa, at VicenzaOro January has designed a new collection. It is dedicated to a flower rare and threatened from extinction: the edelweiss. The Edelweiss line is inspired by the simplicity of nature, but perhaps also to the delicate balance that is established in the relationship with the man, or in this case, with the woman. The technique is always the one tested by the brand led by the two Swedish designers transplanted to New York: the subtle and complex silver filigree with which are woven jewelry. But, in this case, there is with a variant in addition: the collar necklace, a mini silver filigree sculpture paired with a leather ribbon. The silver embroidery is in some cases combined with pearls or colored crystals, pastel tones. A jewel that has an air a little ‘vintage, to be combined with a romantic outfits. Giulia Netrese

Jewels on Del Vecchio shirts

Brooks Brothers, historic American company of Claudio Del Vecchio property, buy the brand of Alexis Bittar jewelry.
Above the Brooks Brothers shirts they will wear jewelry by Alexis Bittar. It is an Italian-American affair that concluded in New York. Brooks Brothers is personal property of Claudio De Vecchio, first son (of the six had by three different wives) of Leonardo Del Vecchio, the largest shareholder in the eyewear giant Luxottica. And to direct the operations of the clothing group is his son Matthew, with a past at McKinsey and Goldman Sachs. Brooks Brothers, one of the historic names of stars and stripes, through its subsidiary Carolee acquired Alexis Bittar, the jewelry brand based in the borough of Brooklyn. It is not the first move in the jewels of the famous brand for the button-down shirts. Brooks Brothers has purchased Carolee in 2001, and develops and markets licensed jewelry trademarks Lauren by Ralph Lauren, ABS by Allen Schwartz, Trina Turk. But you can not buy jewelry Alexis Bittar in the clothing shops of group: “Our strategy is to maintain a jewelry division wholly owned but independently, with property lines as Carolee and Alexis Bittar, and licensed brands,” stated Matteo del Vecchio. In short, the jewelry do not will mix with the fabrics. At the moment. But the idea “could potentially be explored in the future,” concluded enigmatic Del Vecchio. Federico Graglia

Wallace Chan and friends at Tefaf

The best pieces of jewelry at Tefaf New York: there is also a new ring by Wallace Chan.
Tefaf, the most important event dedicated to antiques, but not only, arrives in New York. Established in Maastricht in 1988, the fair has been so successful that it was also exported to New York, where it even two editions, in May and in October (22-26). Although the focus is centered on paintings, sculptures and antique furniture, there are prestigious exhibitors offering antique and contemporary jewelry. And among the great jewels to see (you can observe something this page), there are those of Wallace Chan, the first Chinese designer to be invited to this prestigious art fair. Chan is a master not only in the composition of the different elements, but also in the processing of stones, with innovative cuts and often patients incisions on the surface. The novelty is called the Ring of Night, which has at its center a large amethyst for over 116 carats. Although at first glance it seems a rather simple ring, it’s actually surprisingly built without griffes to hold the stone. It is the hand of the master. Next to this piece out of the ordinary, and it’s not the only Wallace Chan that will be in exhibition, Tefaf also houses other pieces of great value, as the earrings by Reza to the Camellia brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels. Inimitable Alexandra Mor

The unique pieces of Alexandra Mor, high jewelry and a dash of eclecticism.
Between France, Israel and the US, Alexandra Mor is the result of a cultural mix. Not only that: it is also the result of a mix of experiences. Her mother was a fashion designer, while she started as a film director. But to change his fate is been, in large part, the meeting with her husband, Alon, who has had a family of diamond traders and carvers. That’s how she was kidnapped by the appeal of precious stones. And that is how he decided to become a designer of fine jewelry. She offers one-of-kind pieces, with prices also coming to the tens of thousands of dollars. Her jewelry (in the images in this page you can see some jewels for sale on 1stdibs.com) are sometimes deliberately asymmetrical, with highly visible stones, amazing geometrical joints, an eclectic style but never weird. do not be surprised if the jewels of Alexandra Mor, who works in New York (but lives in Boston), are required by collectors. But are few and are found only in the luxury store Bergdorf Goodman.
An example of what she is capable of creating is the ring with ametrine, a rare variety of quartz, with three two-color stones, flanked by smaller diamonds on platinum and yellow gold 18 carats, sold for over $ 36,000. Margherita Donato

Bulgari doubles at Sotheby’s New York

At Sotheby’s auction, was unsold a 27-carat diamond, while a Bulgari ring doubles the estimate.
Autumn surprises: what does it mean if the most precious diamond for sale is snubbed and remains in the safe? That’s what happened in New York, the first auction of Sotheby’s fall season (we talked about here https://gioiellis.com/big-in-vendita-a-new-york/). Star of the sale was a platinum ring with a diamond of 27.35 carats oval. The estimate of this gem was quite high: 2-2,5 million dollars. Despite the conspicuous dimensions of the stone, the ring has not been sold. But if the diamond did flop, the auction was stunned for some quotes that have multiplied the starting assessments. The top lot of the day, in fact, turned out to be a Bulgari ring with a sapphire cushion cut, weight 24.72 carats, surrounded by diamonds shaped like a pear. The ring was valued before the auction up to $ 350,000, and instead was beaten to 706,000, more than double.
It was not the only jewel to abduct the eyes of buyers: a suite of Van Cleef & Arpels (necklace with diamonds and yellow sapphires and blue sets 18K gold and earrings) was sold for $ 340,000. Price also booming for one of the most anticipated jewelry: the jellyfish in glass and enamel is a gold ring 18K signed René Lalique, from $ 20,000 stock was sold for 322,000. Federico Graglia

Big for sale in New York

In New York, important jewels for sale at Sotheby’s. Pieces by René Lalique and Louis Comfort Tiffany, Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier.
We just wrote that Sotheby’s auction held in Hong Kong on October 4 and that promises to be very interesting (article here). But the auction house has also an other appointment in its program. On 22 September in New York it’s scheduled another auction of jewelry with pieces by René Lalique and Louis Comfort Tiffany, Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier. In addition to a good number of diamonds and precious stones. The sale of Important Jewels includes over 200 jewelry prices from 3,000 dollars. Among the most interesting pieces, Sotheby’s noted a ring of René Lalique, the father of design in Art Nouveau style. The sensual curves of gold, combined with enamel and cut crystal ring are a single piece (estimate 15,000-20,000 dollars). It remains famous collaboration of designers with actress Sarah Bernhard, which led to the creation of two jewelry snake shape for the role as the Empress Theodora. By Tiffany is instead for sale a necklace personally designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, the first director of design since 1902. The necklace is made with Moonstone, lapis lazuli and diamonds, dated 1915 (estimate 20-30,000 dollars). For the Art Deco period, in the catalog there is a Cartier bracelet in platinum, diamonds and emeralds of 1930 (estimated 150-200,000 dollars). Several pieces by Bulgari of sixties and seventies, including a brooch with emeralds, rubies and diamonds (estimate 40-60,000 dollars). Federico Graglia

The new cables David Yurman

The Cable collection by David Yurman is increasingly valuable. It was presented in New York.
David Yurman, sculptor and jeweler who in 1975 launched his first Cable collection, renews the form that gave him international success. The bracelets in the form of cable, now also in titanium, were presented in a version with precious stones and diamonds, set at the two ends of the jewel. The new pieces have attracted attention in New York, during the Fashion Week. The series Cable, which has a shape that resembles, in fact, the twisted cables, was sold in 40 years about 2 million pieces in its different versions, in gold, silver or plain steel. No wonder, then, that Yurman will reclaim this now classic gem with the new variants that embellish. The Reinassance Collection accompanies the Pure Form, another line of jewelry that also adopted in this case the form of twisted cable. Lavinia Andorno

Tom Ford maxi

The new maxi necklaces which Tom Ford presented in New York.
Tom Ford has recently presented a film, Nocturnal Animals, story of love and revenge with protagonists Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal at the Venice Film Festival. It was well received by film critics. But it sparked many more comments the parade of the designer who has started the Fashion Week in New York. To hit those who attended the parades on the catwalk, it was not just the clothes ready-to-wear fashion show, but the necklaces worn by the models. Not only for the form of these jewels, but also from the king-size measurement: a dimension that did suggest the need for some effort to wear big gold chains and pendants that could be suitable for Hulk. But they loved them. It is not the first time that Tom Ford designs jewelry (she started when she was From Yves Saint-Laurent) and indeed has always chosen rather large sizes. If you like, there is already one for sale can be purchased online here. Price: about 2400 Euros. Giulia Netrese

The new masterpieces by Fulco di Verdura

New jewels by Fulco di Verdura presented in London.
Fulco di Verdura debuted at Masterpiece London with a collection that pits two works of the thirties of the Sicilian Duke: one was the Byzantine-inspired by Coco Chanel in Paris, and other his distinctly modern designs for the stars of cinema.

The Fulco di Verdura jewelry have been worn by the most famous actresses in Hollywood: Katherine Hepburn, Lana Turner, Lauren Bacall, Gene Tierney. And then from Windsor and the Agnelli family, the Ruspoli and Crespi. The Sicilian nobleman who emigrated to New York had among the customers also Astor, the Wanderbildt, the Rothschilds. To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the store on Fifth Avenue in New York, in 2014 Verdura presented The Power of Style: verdura to 75, a retrospective exhibition with over 150 jewelery created by master jeweler Duke Fulco di Verdura. His name has become famous thanks to his friendship with Coco Chanel, Diana Vreeland, Helena Rubinstein.

The story of Fulco di Verdura must to be told. Born in Palermo in 1898, was part of one of the oldest families of the Sicilian aristocracy, of Spanish origin. The name of the house was San Esteban y de La Cerda. And so Fulco Santostefano di Murata de La Cerda, who lived in Palermo Palazzo Verdura, after his father’s death he moved to France, to work for Coco Chanel. After the war he opened the famous store on Fifth Avenue.

Ward Landrigan then purchased the company in 1984, six years after the death of the duke.

Cullinan Dream sold to 25 million

The blue diamond Cullinan Dream was sold at $ 25 million at Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in New York. Diamond, more than 24 carats, is considered one of the most interesting gems. The sale price is the middle ground of the initial estimates (23 million to 29 million). It’s not, therefore, a record, but it testifies with the market for colored diamonds is still vivid, to use a pun. A big white diamond of over 52 carats instead totaled “only” 2 million. While, among the jewels within the estimates they have remained a Cartier bracelet with aquamarines and a necklace of white diamonds and yellow.
A success beyond expectations came instead for one of the first works of Fulco di Verdura for Coco Chanel. The jewel was sold for $ 100,000. One curious detail: to buy the bracelet was the brand Verdura. According to the company which holds the rights to the name of the famous and noble Sicilian designer, the bracelet is worth the final price, which was about three times the estimate ($ 35,000) . It is not an routine jewel: it was built around 1935 and was part of Coco Chanel collection. It is silver, made of clear enamel and with the simulation of red and green cabochon. Other faux gems are blue, to the side, and with rectangular shape. The bracelet, which is not signed, however, is accompanied by a letter confirming that this is a drawing of the Duke Fulco di Verdura. The purchase will be part of the Vegetable Museum Collection and will be exposed with the bracelet Cross of Malta, built in 1930. Federico Graglia

Nadia Morgenthaler in the Big Apple

Nadia Morgenthaler (see also this article) is only active from three years, yet it has already become an international reference point. The high jewelery, on the other hand, does not loves borders. The designer based in Geneva, that before debuting with her brand has long worked for other Maison, has landed in New York for a week and presented to newyorkers her jewelry (with only visits by appointment), which are a subtle game of balance between nostalgia for vintage and new combinations of classical elements, such as large and small pearls. Her jewelry also resemble those of decorative elements of architecture that can be found in the details of pediments, pinnacles, in friezes. Or they may seem small chandeliers in miniature, but with the grace of jewelry that looks more to the nineteenth century, that the digital age. For the occasion, the designer has also brought with her some new piece, made for the visit to the Big Apple. Giulia Netrese
