The freedom jewels of Karma El Khalil

She studied psychology. And for this she became a gemologist and jewelry designer in New York. It seems strange? It is. But it is the story of Karma El Khalil, who received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Tufts University in Boston. Then, she wanted to do a master’s degree in London, but a random mistake on the part of the school’s admissions department delayed entry. So Karma spent the summer designing jewelry for fun. As can be easily deduced from the name, Karma El Khalil is of Arab origin. Lebanese, to be precise. And the makeshift designer showed the jewelry design to a family friend in Beirut, which is one of the centers of Middle Eastern jewelry.

Result: they liked them. The designer’s parents invested $ 10,000 to make 15 pieces, which were immediately sold. And Karma El Khalil’s professional history began. She moved to New York to study design and graduated from the GIA, immediately sold 80% of the jewelry at the first opportunity and found admirers in Madonna and Brad Pitt, who gave Angelina Jolie a Karma ring (they were others times), Charlize Theron, Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera. The mix of cultures that she brings with her, between Europe, America and Africa (where she lived as a child with her parents), stimulated and conditioned her creativity. And, perhaps, the degree in psychology helps her understand the desire of others.

Caitlin Mociun, from the world to New York

/

The unique jewels by the designer Catlin Mociun, made in New York ♦

Caitlin Mociun recounts that she started a journey at the age of 12, spending six years throughout Asia and Europe, with extended stays in Malaysia and Prague. Of her childhood in California, she recalls the time spent pretending to be a appaloosa. Up to Rhode Island School of Design, in New York. She it stopped there and now has a boutique in Brooklyn. First, for the truth, she designed clothes.

But after she is passed from textiles to jewelry, and now is known for its rings one-of-a-kind, with many stones, often ancient diamonds and rare gems such as sapphires bicolor. In the shop she presents her jewelry alongside handmade pottery and other household items, always unique. In 2014 she won a special mention at the American Gem Trade Association’s Spectrum Awards. Her style? She describes herself as a follower of the design principles of the Bauhaus school: elegance and simplicity. But surprising. She also like to point out that her jewelry is made by artisans regularly contracted and that the stones are remains of antiques as is possible. Mociun also recycles scrap metal, so use them in subsequent pieces. Her idea is that everything can be repaired, also a gem. Matilde de Bounvilles

India reborn with the colored gems under the skyscrapers of New York with Goshwara ♦

The Indian taste for gold and precious stones transported in the shadow of skyscrapers in New York. The result is Goshwara, Maison specializes in high jewelry collections made with colored gems. Goshwara debuted in 2007 on the initiative of Sweta Jain designer, who started to offer unique items for a selected private clients.

The success convinced her to take the next step and look out to the open market. “I have noticed a lack of color in jewelry,” she explained to describe his creative philosophy. On the other hand, Sweta Jain has worked with the precious stones from childhood: the merchant father of gems has taken her around the mines in Africa to find the best bits. When she is become adult, she enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology to study jewelry design. It’s all right, in fact. There is only to explain the meaning of the name, Goshwara. It was a term used in India and Persia to describe a perfect teardrop shape. A silhouette of perfect proportions that, according to Sweta, embodies the essence of femininity. The luxury curves, in fact. Giulia Netrese

Stephen Russell’s new ancient jewels

/

Like good wine, jewels can increase in value and charm over the years. Not only that, vintage jewels, if they are of high quality, are also extraordinarily modern. Fortunately, in addition to jewelry auctions, you can get vintage or antique jewelry in specialty stores. There are not many, but there are brands, such as Stephen Russell in New York, on Madison Avenue, which guarantee the high quality of the jewels on sale. The company opened the shop in 1984 and is aimed primarily at collectors.

The founders are two, Stephen Feuerman and Russell Zelenetz, and the name of the brand is a summary of their names. They have spent over 35 years building their incredible collection of rare Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco era jewelry, earning a first-rate clientele (fans include Kate Moss and Nicole Kidman). The two jewelers have selected jewels from the last three centuries, all one of a kind and in perfect condition. Prices have at least five zeros. And they are also sold online, in perfect harmony with the times. Federico Graglia

Briony Raymond’s zodiac

/

The jewelry collections dedicated to the zodiac, with the icons of the 12 signs of Western astrology, are nothing new. But few are cared for in detail and have the quality of that made by Briony Raymond, designer from New York, with an atelier that produces many pieces of high jewelry. The collection dedicated to the zodiac is made of gold, with small diamonds set in medallions to hang around the neck. But, above all, the jewels are treated in detail and have a sculptural shape.

The result is also due to the cultural background of Briony, who took her first steps as an art historian and expert in vintage jewelry. In fact, her jewels, in addition to being impeccably made, also have a classic flavor. After completing her art history studies in Paris, Briony Raymond immersed herself in the world of finance in Europe and the United States. But she quickly moved into the jewelry industry: she worked eight years as a high jewelry expert at Van Cleef and Arpels in the famous Fifth Avenue main boutique in New York City. Where the desire to found her jewelry brand was born. And she did it perfectly.

The gold of Dabakarov

/

The green gold and the large colored stones of Dabakarov, the Russian tradition transplanted to New York ♦ ︎

One of the main Russian cities is New York. It seems a paradox, but in the Big Apple lives a community of about 600,000 people who emigrated from Russia, before and after the collapse of the Berlin Wall. Among these families there is also that of the Dabakarov, with Jewish roots in the area that today is Uzbekistan. This long story behind and a craftsmanship skills that are emigrated with them, have pushed the two generations of the Dabakarov family to propose their model of jewelry in the USA. The Dabakarov jewelery keeps the oriental atmosphere that derives from the family tradition.

But not only that: they also added a pinch of novelty: they specialized in green gold. It is AU79, a patented gold alloy, which gives off green tones. The style of the jewels is quite elaborate, with evident inspiration from oriental roots: curls, scrolls, and small ones that enrich the perimeter and volumes of the jewels. There is also a wide use of semi-precious stones. Their jewels are distributed throughout the vast territory of the United States.

Even today, those of A. Jaffe are highly sought-after and appreciated rings. One of the distinctive signs of the engagement or wedding rings of the Maison is a slight shank squaring to minimize twists and maximize comfort. It takes up to 80 hours to create a single ring. The rings are classic, that is, gold or platinum stem with a diamond on top, but with an infinite number of variations. Those looking for a classic solitaire or a more elaborate model find it in the extensive catalog of the company. Once you have chosen, you just have to get married. Margherita Donato

Gigi Ferranti in Portofino

//

Gina Ferranti, an American designer who founded the Gigi Ferranti brand in Brooklyn, New York, has Italian origins. Which she has not forgotten. For this reason, inspired by the land of her ancestors, Gina launched the Portofino collection, the name of the small tourist port on the Ligurian sea, one of the favorite places of the jet set. It is perhaps the bright colors of the flowers that bloom in spring in that part of Italy that have suggested the use of many colored stones, such as sapphires and tsavorites, mounted on 18-karat gold.

The collection includes many rings, including stackable ones, one of which alludes to the flowers of the Riviera. There are also some bracelets, earrings and pendant necklaces with geometric and clear volumes. Which, in the case of necklaces and bracelets, also allude to the shape of that type of pasta that in Italy is called mezze penne rigate: a touch that adds a little humor to the collection. Gina Ferranti launched her brand after earning her degree in gemologist in 2011, and after a career in the fashion industry.

Julius Cohen, music in New York

Julius Cohen, a famous Maison of New York directed by the most creative of creative directors.

It is among the most renowned design studios of jewelry in America. Based in New York, Julius Cohen started with designing jewelry directly to individual private clients. In short, particularly valuable jewelry made for a relatively limited group of fans and well-heeled customers. The founder Julius Cohen, began his career in 1929 when he was 16, for Oscar Heyman & Bros., jewelry company owned by his uncles. There he learned the basics of the trade. He then improves with Harry Winston, another name of New York luxury élite.

One new feature that was introduced is customer service even at home or in the office. For those who are very busy is a nice convenience the jeweler who comes to you at home or at work. Julius Cohen died in 1995, the Maison was continued by his son in law, Leslie Steinweiss, who had joined in 1975 as creative director. And it is not only creative in designing jewelry: Leslie is also a pianist, composer and lyricist. Although the collections that he has designed do not need further poetry. Giulia Netrese

The signs of Zodiac by Verdura

/

The zodiac signs are one of those themes that jewelry never tires of reproposing, alongside flowers, hearts and eyes that chase away evil spirits. This time it is the Verdura brand from New York to propose a collection, Zodiac, based on Libra, Capricorn, Aquarius and so on. As is known, the brand uses the name of the refined Italian designer Fulco di Verdura, a noble Sicilian who in the 1930s achieved fame by designing jewelry for major brands, before setting out on his own. Verdura loved going to the Hayden Planetarium of the Natural History Museum of the great American city.

The constellations and zodiac signs were to fascinate Verdura, because the current owners of the brand, president Nico Landrigan and father Ward Landrigan, found a set of 12 postcards bought nearly a century ago by the designer in the museum’s gift shop, each containing a illustration of the zodiac murals from the room dedicated to Copernicus. Here, then, that starting from those postcards, now the zodiac signs become gold and diamond jewels with the name of Verdura. No astrologer had foreseen this.

Doyle & Doyle: jewelery in New York specializing in vintage and charming pieces

If you are in New York and go in search of vintage jewelry, straight bets on Doyle & Doyle. It is a jewelry store founded by Elizabeth and Irene Pamela Doyle who has a special feature: does not sell anything that does not have the charm of a life lived. In much of the jewelry is vintage, the last century or even the nineteenth century. The proposal to Doyle & Doyle looks so eclectic. And, above all, it addressed to strong choices, very personal. The free diamonds by Glik

From Brazil to New York, vacuum precious stones and furniture by Moritz Glik

For Moritz Glik (don’t be fooled by the German-Polish name: he’s a Brazilian-born jeweler, where he started as a shoe designer, but has lived in New York since the 1990s), there is nothing more magical than the sparkle of diamonds. free to move under two bezels of the glass he uses for watches, namely sapphire crystal. In truth, Chopard had already thought about it with the watches in 1976, but Glik put his own and with a strong sense of design he created Kaleidoscope, an ongoing collection that won the Couture Show for two years in a row.

Anello in oro rosa con diamanti e zaffiri bianchi
Anello in oro rosa con diamanti e zaffiri bianchi

From the beginning with a minimalist motif modeled on burnished metal and mounted flush, the next step was the retro frames; now it is the turn of rounded shapes in pink and opulent yellow gold with pavé stones that frame diamonds of all colors, sapphires of various shades, emeralds and shiny or rough rubies. All the pieces are made entirely by hand in his New York studio, if and some take on a precise shape only when worn, all give the illusion of diamonds floating in the air. The Kaleidoscope collection, for example, is made up of pendants, rings, bracelets and earrings that enclose loose diamonds and colored stones inside a white sapphire crystal, so that they move with the wearer. Jordan Askill multitasking

Sharks, panthers, but also flowers: Jordan Askill, a New York-based designer, has brought some of the wild spirit of his Australia to the American city. But, in reality, it is not tied to traditions, but rather to the pleasure of inventing: in 2015 he won the British Fashion Award for Emerging Accessory Design and in 2016 he was appointed a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Born in Sydney, in 2000 he moved to London, where he was an intern for Alexander McQueen. In 2004, Askill was invited to join the Dior Homme design team in Paris and four years later he decided to found his jewelry brand. But he has also collaborated with fashion houses and the Danish brand Georg Jensen, as well as Gemfields, Meadham Kirchhoff, The International Palladium Board, Topshop and Swarovski. Not only that: he also directs and develops short films and video installations. His pieces are sculptural and not surprisingly he also uses the 3D printing system to get to his creations: a multitasking creativity. Nature-related subjects, such as the flowers of the Canadensis viola, are the source of inspiration for his collections.

Fair jewelry with Me&Ro

The jewels of the American designer Robin Renzi: wrought gold, black diamonds, pearls. And many good reasons ♦ ︎

Creating jewelry is an affair of state, or rather, it is also a social activity: it’s what think the American designer Robin Renzi with her Me&Ro (we have already talked about here), boasting a activities including jewelry and cinema. In fact, she has collaborated on the design for films like Memoirs of a Geisha, Spider Man, Black Swan, The Devil Wears Prada and Notting Hill.

Anello Tenderness in platino riciclato e diamanti
Anello Tenderness in platino riciclato e diamanti

But, what is more important from the New York debut, Little Italy, 15 years ago, is that Me & Ro is proclaimed standard bearer of honesty and fair behavior. Because the jewel, says the designer, is something that has accompanied the peoples in their history, first as an amulet, and then as an ornament. When she was a child Robin Renzi was playing with Grandma’s rings, as an adult she has performed in off theaters, and in a series of music videos prior to express themselves with the art of jewelry. But with an eye to the impact that the jewelry can have in the lives of the poor people: her diamonds are certified by the Kimberly Process (do not serve to finance local conflicts) and in an effort to protect coral reefs in danger Me&Ro does not use coral, as even ivory. Finally, all the bags used for packaging, gift cards, and brochures are recycled and biodegradable materials. And if it don’t is enough for you, Me&Ro supports charitable initiatives. If you feel correct, you know who to call. Giulia Netrese

The Greek-American jewels of Christina Alexiou

From Athens to New York, from psychology to jewelry: Christina Alexiou is a designer who decided to combine Plato with Geronimo, and she has come a long way. She combines, in fact, some aspects of the aesthetics of her native country with that of the Native Americans. On the other hand, she explains, Greece has always been a place where cultures have crossed.

Anello in oro 18 carati e tormalina

The story of Christina Alexiou is unusual: she graduated in psychology, then obtained a Masters in Art Direction from New York University. She moved to live in New York in the 1980s. And here she dealt with night clubs and fashion magazines. With her husband she then decided to replicate the business in Athens as well as working as a journalist for some Greek fashion magazines. And the jewels?

They came later as a profession, but now they constitute the passion and occupation of the designer. Although she says she started getting passionate when she was 14, especially for Native American ethnic jewelry. Pink opals are carved in the shape of lips for the bracelets, tourmalines take the shape of hearts to hang on thin gold chains, rings reveal baroque curves in transparency.

The roots of Ippolita

The new creations by Ippolita Rostagno, an Italian designer transplanted to the United States ♦

From the rolling Tuscan hills to those of California and then to the straight avenues of New York: Ippolita Rostagno, born in Florence, moved to the USA when she was 19 years old (her mother is American). She enrolled in Occidental College, Los Angeles, the same one who attended Barack Obama. She gave herself to dance, founding a company. Then, a little by chance, she became a jewelry star. “In the late 1990s, I started designing jewelry first for my daughter, then for others,” she said.

Orecchini in oro con turchese, topazio blu, peridoto, corniola, tormalina rosa, amazzonite
Orecchini in oro con turchese, topazio blu, peridoto, corniola, tormalina rosa, amazzonite

In 1999, she recalls, the jewels were mainly traditional ones and worn only on special occasions. This is why she chose to design jewelry that could be worn every day and on all occasions. Evidently she had the right touch: after a few years her necklaces, earrings and rings, with the Ippolita brand, appeared on the skin of stars like Hilary Swank, Uma Thurman, Susan Saradon, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz.

From Italy, however, she has retained the taste and ability to assort those colors that have remained in memory. Like the collection of topaz , rock crystal and citrine-based jewels, which you see on this page, which recall the shades of the Tuscan hills after the summer harvest. Her jewels do not skimp on gold, diamonds and precious stones, but occasionally some unusual material appears, such as resin. But Italy is also present in another initiative: the Artemest online portal, dedicated to quality craftsmanship. Giulia Netrese

India in New York by Nigaam

In 1970, Narendra Kumar Nigam founded a small company for cutting stones, in India. In 1990 the company was already a major player in the processing of gems. Six years later he opened an office in New York and at the beginning of the new century has created a division for jewelry. Why limit yourself to cut stones when you can also dial in fine jewelry? Together with Oriental Gemco these Indians transplanted in large American cities have created Nigaam brand, which is now one of the luxury jewelers in America.

But there are not only in the US but also in Europe, especially in Britain, Italy and Spain, and also throughout Asia. La Maison is targeted, they explain in New York, to the women category Affluent, sophisticated, who appreciate design combined with skilled craftsmanship in the creation of jewelry. It can also be deduced by simply looking at the kind of collections that proposes the company. That, in some product line has not forgotten the oriental taste, perhaps because it also caters to Asian markets, while in other jewelry has definitely embraced the simplest forms like the West. Success in New York of Sotheby’s auction

No diamond had a crazy price, but the Sotheby’s auction in New York has also achieved a record: it was the first sale of jewelry during the coronavirus emergency. The jewelry auction, obviously online, reached $ 739,375. Far from the numbers reached by Magnificent Jewels’ auctions, but important by counting the moment.

Half of the lots, Sotheby’s established, exceeded the highest estimates, pieces were purchased from 32 different countries and, halfway through the times, half of the offers came from smartphones or tablets. 97% of the lots were sold. In the catalog were also famous Maison pieces, such as David Webb, Verdura and Tiffany & Co. The highest lot of the sale was a pair of earrings with rubies by Michele della Valle, which reached $ 25,000, more than three times the estimate higher starting point ($ 7,000). All 11 David Webb designer jewels were sold, led by a gold and enamel bracelet. Sold out also for the 15 lots of Tiffany & Co., which had as its most valuable piece a necklace of peridots designed by Paloma Picasso ($ 12,500, over six times the highest estimate). Also noteworthy are the four pieces of the legendary Verdura, led by a pair of “Byzantine” earrings with citrines and rhodolites.

The surprising design of Paolo Costagli

//

Not all jewelers have a page on Wikipedia: Paolo Costagli is part of this elite. But that’s not why we talk about it. Rather, the Italian designer and gemologist based in New York has the ability to continue to amaze even after many years of cutting-edge work, as we observed in his booth in the VicenzaOro Design Room.

Paolo Costagli has chosen the impervious path of difficult things. New geometries, unusual stones, surprising combinations: they are perhaps also the result of a certain exuberance, evidenced by his curriculum. Born in Florence 54 years ago, at 21 he moved to the United States and attended the Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica, California. Graduated in gemology, he decided to put the teachings into practice. And he went to Muzo, Colombia where the most famous emerald mines are located.

Back in New York, in 1993 he started his business as a jeweler and a vintage pieces trade. Its inspiring gods, however, were designers such as René Boivin, Suzanne Belperron and Raymond Templier. With good results: in 2008 his Brillante bracelet was included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Arts and Design.
