Laboratory diamonds unknown to young people

While sales of lab-grown, ie synthetic, diamonds are on the rise, the concept of artificial stones may not be clear among buyers. Especially if the diamonds created by machines are considered green, ecological, green, biocompatible, sustainable. You can add the most environmentally friendly definition you prefer. A survey presented at Vicenzaoro September, in fact, puts the finger in the sore: young people, Millennials and Generation Z, have not understood the concept. Can you blame it? Evidently not. It is those who sell synthetic stones who have not communicated enough. In addition, there is an intense debate on how much synthetic gems, largely created in China, are truly environmentally friendly. For example, to be “grown” in the laboratory they need a large use of electricity which, in China, comes largely from coal-fired plants (natural, not synthetic).

In any case, in Vicenzaoro it emerged that over 90% of the interviewees do not know the issues of ethical sustainability of diamonds. And only for those who are aware of the environmental factor consider this aspect as relevant for the choice. Furthermore, the majority of the interviewees think that only the natural diamond also contains an emotional factor, due to its authenticity and rarity. Unlike the stones built in the laboratory. But the ideas of the young people interviewed are quite confused, given that only 60% are ready to buy a natural diamond, while 35% say they are indifferent.

The qualitative research, curated by Laura Inghirami, entrepreneur and founder of Donna Jewel, with the collaboration of Igi (Italian Gemmological Institute) was presented as part of the Gem Talks together with Gaetano Cavalieri, president of Cibjo, Andrea Sangalli, vice president of Federpreziosi . Conclusion: everyone agrees that buyers need to be informed more and better, with Cibjo having created a Guidelines document that can be downloaded from the web. It will be enough?

Also nine Italian gemologists with Feeg diploma

Simona Aiello, Filomena Barbato, Maria Vittoria Berutti, Giacomo Cancro Mitia, Lavinia Casentini, Filippo Invernizzi, Daniele Manasse, Gabriele Mazzilli, Lorenzo Scandolo: these are the nine Italian gemologists from IGI, the Italian Gemological Institute, graduated from the Feeg, Federation for European Education in Gemmology, together with 69 others. Gemologists received the certificate in Schoonhoven, the Netherlands, on the occasion of the Federation Symposium, born in 1995, of which Igi is one of the founding members.

The federation brings together the most important European realities in gemological training: schools that have at least a ten-year history with nationally and internationally recognized diplomas.

The Italian Gemological Institute is the only Italian institute whose diploma is recognized for admission to the exams for the achievement of the European Gemmologist Eg diploma. The gemologist Igi can take the theoretical and practical exam in our institutional office in Milan, with the presence of an external commissioner from other European schools.

We speak of a title of merit that serves to enrich the student’s cultural background and his / her curriculum and is the right opportunity to measure their knowledge with an international unifying body that gathers the largest gemstone training realities in Europe. It is an important step to crown one’s course of study, to confront foreign colleagues who study gemology and to attend conferences in the sector held by speakers of international standing.

A certificate for the coral by Igi

Coral reefs at risk, coral quality: Igi, the Italian Gemological Institute, has developed a scientific method for classification ♦ ︎

Diamonds have long been the lens: to ascertain their origin, as well as their quality, different methods have been introduced, starting from the Kimberley Process. But the need to know what is actually purchased, starting from the origin and characteristics, does not only concern diamonds. Coral, for example, is a “famous unknown” to most people who buy the precious fruit of the sea.

But in reality, it is possible to obtain a true coral identikit. And it will be the Igi, the Italian Gemological Institute, chaired by Raffaele Maino and directed by Loredana Prosperi, the first laboratory able to provide the certainty of the origin of the coral. Not only: the IGI also offers the possibility of certifying its origin through a sophisticated fingerprinting tool. In short, not just a visual expertise, but a scientific proof.

The goal was achieved in synergy with Cibjo, an organization that defines itself as the United Nations of the jewelery business, that is, the world confederation of jewelery, and the coral commission, chaired by Vincenzo Liverino. The scientific part was curated with the support of the University Federico II of Naples, an active part through its Department of Marine Biology, headed by Professor Anna Di Cosmo, by the same Igi and by the Danat, the Institute of Gems and pearls of Barhein (an authority on industrial standards), led by Ken Scarratt.

In addition to certifying the quality of the coral, the process will also serve to protect the raw material, which is a living organism and endangered risk species (such as coral reefs). The results already achieved include the adoption in 2015 of the Coral Blue Book, later completed in 2017 and the drafting of the Coral Guide for Customs manual – Classification & Identification of Coral Materials, designed to provide customs authorities and competent agencies with correct elements evaluation and classification of quality gem corals. In this way it is possible to identify in a certain way the origin of the material, decisive for intervening on the protection of species and protected areas, and to introduce,

Until now the identification was based on the physical properties of the material, morphological observation with the use of infrared and Raman spectroscopes. But in some cases this is not enough and more information is needed. Here comes the identification of the genetic code, present in all living organisms, the most reliable method for the determination of species, which now offers the possibility of certifying the coral species without a doubt, using appropriate markers.

Black jade climbing

The black jade, charming stone that wants to ascend on the diamonds throne.
Roberto Coin has chosen it for his collection Black Jade: this stone could have a wide diffusion, assuming that if you find a sufficient quantity. To propose this valuable material is now Kings Stone US, a New York company that owns the rights of import to the US. To guarantee the quality and the characteristics of this stone are the National Gemstone Testing Center (NGTC), Chinese institution with the official license, and two American organizations, the American Gemological Laboratories (Agl) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI). The black jade which is proposed, however, does not come from China, but from a mine in South Africa of owned by King Stone, even though the certification of authenticity is the prerogative of NGTC, the leading authority on the subject.
The characteristics presented for this stone (it is jadeite, not nephritis) are relevant: is shining like a diamond and has a hardness of 7.5 to 8.5 on the Mohs scale, more or less so as an emerald or topaz (the Diamond is 10 ranked). In addition, according to King Stone, jade is an alternative to the “blacks treated diamonds”, since it is a stone from the natural color, glossy, and consistent as a precious stone. The effect is fascinating, as evidenced by the collection of Roberto Coin.
