William Goldberg and the Ashoka cut

William Goldberg and the rare Ashoka cut diamonds, modeled on one of the oldest and most famous stones in the world ♦ ︎

Once upon a time, and there still is, the very ancient original Ashoka diamond: classified as D (completely colorless), it weighs 41.37 carats. The name is in honor of the Buddhist warrior Ashoka Maurya, who lived two centuries before Christ, and was sold and repurchased twice by Harry Winston. The diamond has fascinated kings and billionaires, but also merchants in love with precious stones, such as William Goldberg, known as Bill, , who passed away in 2003. Many years ago the dealer and jeweler studied each of Ashoka’s facets: from its elegant and elongated shape to the rounded edges. Finally, he managed to understand the secret of that exceptional stone until he patented the cut: but it takes a special rough diamond to become an Ashoka diamond.

Goldberg was born in Brooklyn, New York. He began cutting diamonds in 1948, and then trading high-quality gems. Goldberg & Weiss, with diamond cutter Irving Weiss, was founded in 1952. And in 1973 he founded the William Goldberg Diamond Corporation, in the city’s Diamond District. In 1978 he was elected president of the New York Diamond Dealers Club. He dealt in famous diamonds, including the Queen of Holland diamond, the Premier Rose, the Red Shield diamond and the Pumpkin Diamond. Now William Goldberg is the name of the American Maison run by the heirs, but Ashoka remains a difficult goal, because less than 1% of rough diamonds meet the demanding standards required. All Ashoka diamonds are cut by the masters of William Goldberg. But, of course, William Goldberg doesn’t just offer Ashoka diamond jewelry.

Jewels in the shape of a lily of the valley

Lily of the valley, herbaceous plant (Convallaria maialis) of the Convallariacee family. But above all, one of the fragrant flowers of May. And it is no coincidence that the delicate thrush has inspired many jewelers. Here, then, are some jewels that are inspired by lily of the valley: a flower that has unexpected aphrodisiac properties. Yet it is also a flower often associated with marriage ceremonies, because for some it is a symbol of purity and chastity.

In fact, when we talk about flowers in jewelry and not only, and we immediately think of roses. But lily of the valley also inspired beautiful objects. In pagan times this flower symbolized happiness and for this reason it was considered a lucky charm, while in the Middle Ages the lily of the valley was also used as an amulet, associated with the celebration of May, the beginning of the month of engagement. But the result of a study conducted some time ago by the University Hospital of Padua is perhaps more surprising: it seems that men, who would have a greater olfactory capacity than the female category, are able to recognize an organic chemical, called bourgeonal, if emanating from women’s skin. And this fragrance, very similar to that of lily of the valley, is one of the factors triggering male attraction.

And it is precisely in the Victorian era, with the tradition of sentimental jewels, that the flower becomes one of the most represented motifs with a meaning linked to its era, namely romanticism. Since then more or less all the great jewelers have ventured into the theme and have created more or less realistic brooches, earrings and necklaces inspired by the forest flower. Here is a selection of the most beautiful pieces that all women would like to bring even in December, without being superstitious or looking for a boyfriend. Monica Battistoni

Monica Battistoni

The majestic nature of Harry Winston

Leave worries, routines, daily troubles behind you and take refuge in wonderful places. A dream? Maybe, but not for everyone. As they are not for all the jewels of Harry Winston’s Majestic Escapes collection. High Jewelery: Creating each perfect piece of jewelery took over two years from conception to completion. And it is also a collection that contains a sense of luxurious freedom. Or, more precisely, majestic. Beautiful places, where nature is often the protagonist, but also man’s ability to add culture, in the form of caring for the territory. The American Maison has identified four subjects that inspired the collection: Amalfi, a small Italian town overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the rainforest, the Fiji Islands and the Greek island of Santorini.

Orecchini con diamanti, zaffiri e acquamarina
Orecchini con diamanti, zaffiri e acquamarina

Each of these locations is linked to jewels with nuance gems. For example, for Amalfi the colors of the bougainvillea, with the bright pink of the rubellite next to the blue of the turquoise sea. The clear waters surrounding Santorini inspire necklace and earrings composed of diamonds, sapphires and eight octagonal stepped-cut aquamarines. Again: the rainforest is represented by a necklace, earrings and ring made up of tsavorites in various shades. And for the Fiji Islands the blue motif of turquoise is back paired with diamonds and sapphires. The adjective majestic is quite appropriate.

Jewelry in yellow

A yellow for the summer, but also for the other months. If you like the color of the sun, here is a series of jewels that warm any heart ♦

There was a time in which the yellow color of the stones was considered ambiguous. Maybe it’s because yellow is synonymous with mystery. A long period was dominated by white diamonds, transparent, without color. Glittering, but only sensitive to light reflections. Then came the big fancy-mania, that is a passion for those diamonds that until a few years ago were considered defective, almost unpresentable.

Now the yellow diamonds (but also brown or blue) have record prices. And in the wake of the success of the other lemon-colored diamond, the stones yellow like the sun are revalued. The yellow stones are matched with white gold, but even with that of the gold nugget. So the jewelers in recent years have proposed a series of pieces that enhance the yellow stones, such as citrine. For the uninitiated, the citrine is a variety of quartz, whose yellow color is due, say gemologists, to trivalent iron impurities. The natural citrine quartz is relatively rare, but it is a lot on the market because in reality it is quartz amethyst or smoky quartz. These crystals are heat treated to achieve the colors yellow-orange. Well, the stones are a bit ‘cooked, but they like them. Here is a review of rings that have the yellow colour  as the common denominator.

Not only. Lovers of yellow stones can also choose from other alternatives. For example, yellow topaz is a rarer variety than the blue-toned gemstone, but it often has a subtle shade that coordinates well with a pastel-colored dress. Another choice can be the beryl stone, also available in a yellow shade. Finally, we must not forget the stone that goes by the name of cat’s eye, which less poetically is silicon dioxide combined with hornblende. This gem also has a deeper shade of yellow and feline undertones.

Moi & Toi, story of a mythic ring

/

Moi et Toi, a shape of ring that is timeless. Like love. Here are some of the most fascinating rings Moi et Toi ♦

Two diamonds are better than one, especially in a ring. Who could argue otherwise? And not to copy a famous advertisement for De Beers, but because the ring style Toi et Moi, which has existed for centuries, with two stones on the ends that touch, exactly opposite, is the symbol of the union. Napoleon had engraved in 1796 on the shank of the engagement ring for his future wife Josephine, “You and me (toi et moi in French) , forever.” Hence the name, and the growing popularity of this type of setting, which reached its peak between the 19th and the 20th century.

Perhaps because it traced the romantic fashion of courting chair or sofa tete-a-tete with two seats positioned in S, so as to be able to speak, looking at each other in front. In reality, it has never gone out of fashion: John Kennedy gave a crossover Van Cleef & Arpels engagement ring to Jacqueline, with an emerald and a colorless diamond princess cut. Even the Queen of Denmark Margret had received one with two colorless diamonds six carat square cut, also made by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1967.

The jewelery brand continues to offer this style in the collection Snowflake flower shaped. And it is this detail that distinguishes the contemporary pieces: there is limited to offering stones proportions similar perhaps with contrasting colors, but they are decorative elements confront one another. Of course, when it comes to exceptional stones symmetry is fundamental to enhance their beauty. For example, in some specimens of Bulgari, that sometimes you can find in the jewelry auctions or those sold by Graff, Harry Winston, Alexander Reza, Messika or Picchiotti. Here a selection of the most beautiful and precious you can in the rooms for important customers of jewelers.

The 6 rings by Jennifer Lopez

//

Jennifer Lopez‘s engagement rings: she has collected six. The most valuable is … ♦ ︎

Is there anything better than a wedding with the man you love? The answer is yes: six engagements are better accompanied by as many precious rings. Or, at least, this is the answer that Jennifer Lopez could give you, who has just announced her new official engagement, with its large diamond ring. Probably JLo is a collector of rings and the rotation of husbands and boyfriends is perhaps due to her desire to get new jewels as a gift.

Jennifer Lopez’s sixth engagement ring, thanks to the comeback of Ben Affleck, was designed and made by Tamara Rahaminov and Nicol Goldfiner, of Rahaminov Diamonds, Los Angeles. The ring has a special diamond: an 8.5-carat natural green gem, set with a white diamond and, surprisingly, on a silver band rather than white gold. Although the choice was probably not made to save money. Green is apparently also JLo’s favorite color. The value? There are those who have estimated the cost of diamonds up to 10 million dollars, because green diamonds are rare and precious but, probably, they cost less. Relatively less, of course.

The previous ring received by the American singer from her ex-boyfriend Alex Rodriguez was instead an emerald-cut diamond of 10-15 carats, with a value of up to 5 million.

L'anello con diamante di Jennifer Lopez
L’anello con diamante per Jennifer Lopez di Alex Rodriguez

The stone that she had given Alez Rodriguez has an emerald cut and the jewel is in Art Deco style. Perhaps not by chance it is very similar to that received by Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex who has considerable popularity (even if the critics are not lacking). In any case, in her first 53 years (which turns on July 24, 2022) JLo received six engagement rings, all of which cost at least six figures.

One of her most precious rings was Harry Winston’s pink diamond that Ben Affleck had previously given her. But the third last ring, also by Harry Winston but this time with an 8.5 carat blue diamond, was very precious: it was estimated that it cost 4 million dollars. It didn’t do much good, though.

The jewels of the Sag Awards

Red carpets, figurines. And lots of jewels. The Screen Actors Guild Awards (or Sag Awards for short) are also an opportunity to show off exceptional earrings, necklaces and rings. The 2022 edition was no exception. To the awards awarded in Hollywood by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, which have followed one another since 1952, the statuette is a naked male figure, holding a comedy mask and a tragedy mask. She is called The Actor and is also quite heavy (over 12 pounds, that’s 5.4 kilograms).

For this edition, the Harry Winston jewels worn by Nicole Kidman are worth mentioning (platinum earrings with diamonds for 21.81 carats, a bracelet in platinum with diamonds for 19.50 carats and a ring with pear-shaped diamond of 4.83 carats ). Also Harry Winston the jewels of Salma Hayek (chandelier earrings with over 16 carats of diamonds, a white gold watch and a spiral ring), and of Helen Mirren (earrings with diamonds and sapphires, a bracelet with the same gems and a ring in platinum with diamonds).

Gold, diamonds and celebrities at the Met Gala

After the fear of covid, despite the pandemic counting about 1600 deaths in the US in September 2021, the Met Gala in New York (canceled last year), one of the most important and famous events in the fashion world, is back. The evening, it should be remembered, is an opportunity to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the American city. The night’s theme, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, inspired everything from the Matrix film series to the Statue of Liberty. Many jewels seen on the red carpet.

Harry Winston high jewelry with Love

/

Harry Winston was an American jeweler famous for his diamond jewelry. In the 1953 musical film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, the song Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend includes a spoken part where “Talk to me, Harry Winston, tell me everything!” The jeweler, who passed away in 1978, is also famous for donating the Hope Diamond, one of the most precious stones, to the Smithsonian Institution in 1958, after having owned it for a decade. He was also called the King of Diamonds. But now the Maison, managed by the founder’s son, Ronald, focuses on love rather than on diamonds with the new high jewelery collection.

Chrysler and The Dancing Sun, two super diamonds with Christie’s

Spring is one of the two periods of the year when large jewelery auctions are concentrated. After the one in Geneva, Christie’s offers another Magnificent Jewels auction in New York for June 8, preceded by the online sale of jewelery from 20 May to 4 June. The auction includes a significant selection of colored diamonds, colorless diamonds and precious stones, along with pieces signed by Bulgari, Cartier, Graff, Harry Winston, Jar, Tiffany & Co and Van Cleef & Arpels. Estimates range from $ 10,000 to $ 3,500,000.

The auction on June 8 is led by The Dancing Sun, a huge intense yellow diamond of 204.36 carats, VVS2 purity (estimate 3.5-5.5 million dollars). The Dancing Sun is the largest honed diamond mined in North America. This exceptional stone, along with six additional diamonds (lots 62-67) ranging from 14.52 to 1.06 carats, were cut and polished from the largest quality rough diamond found in North America: weighing 552, 74 carat, the stone was discovered in 2018 by the Diavik Diamond Mine in Canada.

Also featured is the Chrysler Diamond, a magnificent pear-shaped diamond of 54.03 carats, color D, Internally Flawless (estimate 3.5-4.5 million). The story of this exceptional stone began in 1958, when Harry Winston bought what was then known as the Louis XIV diamond owned by Thelma Chrysler Foy, daughter of Walter Chrysler, an automotive entrepreneur who also gave his name to the famous Art Deco skyscraper in New York. Set for the first time in a tiara and exhibited at the Musée du Louvre (1962), the diamond was sold by Winston in 1963, along with a 61.80-carat diamond, to Eleanor Loder. The current owner acquired the pair of gems in 1983: now the diamonds are referred to as the Gemini and included in Notable Diamonds of the World. The Chrysler diamond is now mounted in a necklace and will rightfully go to auction in New York.

Joel Arthur Rosenthal’s passion for unparalleled perfection and innovation earned him a retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2013: he is the first living jeweler to be granted this honor. Three jewels for sale from this collection, Lots 150, 152 and 154, were presented in this prestigious exhibition.

The jewels that shone at the Oscars 2020

The Oscar 2020 prizes were also (virtually) awarded to the jewels seen on the red carpet. In fact, clothes and jewels have always been part of the show of the most glamorous evening. And even the actresses who did not win the magical statuette (by the way: do you know why it is called Oscar? We explain it to you a few lines below) had the satisfaction of parading with memorable jewels.

Let’s start with those signed Tiffany. Why it’s named Oscar
By the way: why are the golden statuettes symbolizing the award given by the Academy Award of Merit called Oscar? According to the most accepted theory, the name is a trivial coincidence: it derives from the exclamation of an employee of the Academy, Margaret Herrick, who at the sight of the first statuette exclaimed: “It looks just like my uncle Oscar!”. A name that nobody has taken from it anymore.

Reza al Tefaf’s jewels

///

Maison Reza’s fine jewelery arrives at Tefaf in New York ♦

It is not uncommon for jewelers to have lives or adventurous stories behind them. This is especially true for the great jewelery makers from the East or the Middle East. And it is also the case of Alexandre Reza, who died in Paris in 2016 at 94, but with a story worthy of a novel. Suffice it to say that he was considered the greatest collector of gems of modern times, before becoming a jeweler. And from 1 to 5 November the jewels of the Maison that he founded can be seen at the New York edition of Tefaf, the great exhibition dedicated to objects of art, antiquities and luxury and collectible jewels. Today the Maison is run by the founder’s son, Olivier, at the Place Vendôme site.

Anello Troïdia (a tre lati) con rubino non trattato Est Africa di 8,48 carati, diamanti

Alexandre Reza was born in 1922 in Moscow, son of a jeweler. Like other Russian families, after the October Revolution the Rezas moved to France, first to Nice and then to Paris. He began his career as a diamond expert, traveling a lot to find every stone. Alexandre Reza has also supplied gems to jewelry brands such as Boucheron, Bulgari, Cartier, Chaumet, Harry Winston, Louis Gérard and Van Cleef & Arpels. And as has happened to many other merchants and gemstone experts, at one point he decided to turn himself into a jeweler. But of gram class: only high jewelry with rare diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires. According to the Sotheby’s auction house, “movement, lightness, composition and harmony are the key words of his works”.

But mishaps were not missed: in 1994 armed thieves stole gems worth about $ 21 million in the jeweler’s salon in Paris. On the other hand, in May 2010 Sotheby’s sold a fancy 5.02 carat blue fancy diamond set in a toi-et-moi ring next to a 5.42-carat white diamond of 6.3 million dollars, setting a record price for a jewel of Reza.
