The rose window of Harry Winston

The Harry Winston rose window in the precious Winston Gates collection ♦ ︎

Fine, elegant and wearable jewelery. Indeed, true luxury is wearing jewelry without fear, without barriers, without timetables. This is what Harry Winston, the New York based king of diamonds, has get with the Winston Gates collection. It is a series of jewels in gold, platinum and diamonds. So far nothing strange. But the collection has a peculiarity: it revolves around the design of a rose window.

Harru Winston, anello in oro giallo e diamanti
Harru Winston, anello in oro giallo e diamanti

For those who are not friends with architectural history, the rose window is a round window crossed by many rays (the number is variable) applied to the facades of Romanesque and Gothic churches. In Europe there are many examples of rose windows shaped. This decorative window came back into fashion in the nineteenth century and was very popular with Harry Winston, who wanted to use his form, but in a smaller scale, to decorate some floors of his New York salon on Fifth Avenue, designed in the fine style Eighteenth century, with the typical American taste. The rose window was considered a symbol of optimism, opportunity, perspective and luck.

But what does the name of the collection have to do with Harry Gates? This too is connected with the founder of the Maison, who wanted to make the precious jewels stored in the vaults accessible to everyone, organizing periodic exhibitions. In short, it opened the gates to the public. The rose windows and doors open to the extraordinary Harry Winston diamonds have thus turned into this collection consisting of a medallion pendant, earrings, bracelet and ring. The rosettes are in ten rays in platinum, in 18-carat or pink gold and set with a round brilliant diamond-shaped central stone, while on the edge there is a circular series of diamonds.

The jewels of the Met Gala

//

Tiffany, Harry Winston, Cartier, de Grisogono: here are the jewels worn by celebrities at the Met Gala held in New York ♦ ︎

It always happens on the first Monday in May. And it has become one of the most popular social events: the Met Gala is the equivalent of the Los Angeles Oscars, only held in New York and focused on fashion. In any case, the Met Gala is the occasion to show off the most extraordinary clothes and jewels, capable of attracting the attention of photographers and, obviously, of the public. This is what happened punctually even in 2019. Here, then, are some of the most interesting appearances, from Lady Gaga to Katy Perry.

But, of course, the Met Gala is above all a fundraiser for charity. It is organized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the money collected is used to support its activities dedicated to fashion and costume. The event is organized by the director of Vogeu Usa, Anna Wintour, by a special committee. Participating in the dinner is expensive: tickets can cost up to $ 30,000, which goes up to 300,000 for companies (for a table), but even this is not enough: the guests are personally selected by Anna Wintour.

This year’s guest list included celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Serena Williams, Harry Styles, Lupita Nyong’o, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry. If you are amazed by the clothes chosen, know that every year a theme is chosen for the show at the Met that follows the dinner, and that it is also the code for the party. This year the theme was Camp: Notes on Fashion: difficult to interpret.

And the jewels? Many, gorgeous, surprising. In particular those of Harry Winston, Tiffany and de Grisogono, which you see on this page.

Sotheby’s crowns the Serpenti necklace

//

Bulgari Serpenti necklace was the most requested piece at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels auction in New York ♦ ︎

The Magnificent Jewels spring auctions seem like a ping-pong game among the big auction houses. The one organized by Sotheby’s in New York, for example, has shown strong interest in antique and contemporary jewelry and pieces by Bulgari, Tiffany & Co., Cartier and Harry Winston, but also for colored and white diamonds. The sale, which also included fine jewelry, totaled $ 21.5 million.

The timeless appeal of rare designer jewelry has been reaffirmed in New York with the masterpieces of Bulgari, Tiffany & Co. and Cartier, created over a century, capturing the attention of international collectors. It was exciting to beat these objects of great interest and to see that the attention was translated into a so lively relaunch contest.
Gary Schuler, President of Sotheby’s Jewelry Division

The eyes were on the Serpenti necklace made of diamonds by Bulgari, which reached 920,000 dollars (halfway through the estimate of 800,000-1,000,000 dollars). The jewel is composed of 260 carats of diamonds. Among the period jewels, the Pendeloque brooch with diamonds, corals, emeralds and beads was also highly appreciated, sold for $ 824,000, more than double the highest estimate (350,000). The shape of the brooch is supple: originally it was intended to cover the shoulder. But she was inspired by the Indian sarpech, a turban pin that hangs like a tassel between her eyebrows. Moreover, the graphic geometry of the piece as a whole is strongly architectural: the triangular projections of coral and diamonds evoke the winged roofs of the Far East pagodas, prefiguring at the same time the iconic Chrysler Building in New York.

The auction house also signals the outcome for a set that includes rare sautoir in enamel and diamonds and a pair of Tiffany & Co earrings, which were sold to an online bidder for $ 500,000 (maximum estimate of 300,000). Designed by the great American jeweler Paulding Farnham, this set was shown for the first time at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, which celebrated the centenary of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. At the time, Farnham was the main designer of Tiffany & Co and the jewelry director, responsible for famous designs including his acclaimed orchids series and the Belmont Stakes Trophy. The necklace and earrings presented in the auction are embellished with large rose-cut diamonds framed by antique European diamonds and single-cut diamonds. Paulding Farnham’s works rarely appear on the market but some important pieces have entered private collections and museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Cooper Hewitt, the Smithsonian Design Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Magnificent Jewels in New York with Christie’s: here are the most interesting pieces for sale at auction ♦ ︎

As always, as it was and as it will be, the Magnificent Jewels auctions hide pieces that make jewelry lovers go crazy. There is no need for some diamonds in the catalog to add a record to the list of more expensive gems. Jewels and exceptional stones, however, are not lacking at the auction on 16 April in New York organized by Christie’s. In short, the Magnificent Jewels rarely disappoint.
The auction (285 lots) includes a selection of colorless diamonds, colored diamonds and precious stones, along with important signed pieces by Bulgari, Cartier, Harry Winston, Tiffany & Co. and Van Cleef & Arpels.

The king of the sale should be the Twin-Stone Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond Ring of 3.06 and 2.61 carats, two stones valued between 6 and 8 million dollars.

There are also three D-colored diamonds of over 15 carats, including a ring with marquise-cut diamonds of 16.69 carats, color D, type IIa, potentially internally flawless, from the Elizabeth Stafford collection (rated between 1.2 and 1.8 million).

In addition to large stones, the catalog includes significant signed pieces by Bulgari, Cartier, Harry Winston, Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co. and Van Cleef & Arpels. In the collection of Florence and Herbert Irving there are, for example, a Burmese ring with 9.73 carat rubies and diamonds by Harry Winston, a sapphire from Madagascar and a diamond ring of 16.88 carats from Bulgari, a sapphire necklace and diamonds by Bulgari.
From the collection of Jean Tailer come a brooch in the shape of a dolphin with diamonds, sapphires, emeralds and gold by Jean Schulmberger for Tiffany & Co. and a 18.36 carat diamond ring, J Color, VS2, by Cartier. Federico Graglia

Jewels with blue blood from Sotheby’s

Princely jewels and a Fabergé tiara: Sotheby’s proposes rare pieces have belonged to the European aristocracy ♦ ︎

For those who love fine jewelry, the Fabergé name is like Raphael or Leonardo for art lovers: a champion who has marked a chapter in history. This is why the Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels auction scheduled in Geneva on May 14th is particularly interesting.

Among the jewels on sale, in fact, a diamond tiara attributed to Fabergé stands out, created around 1903 for the duchess Cecilie von Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1886-1954), the last hereditary princess of Prussia.

The tiara was given to the princess by her Russian relatives on the occasion of her marriage to Crown Prince William (1882-1951). The diadem has an estimate of 200,000 – 300,000 dollars.

As we saw last November with Marie Antoinette’s pearl, historic jewels have the power to transport us back to a moment in time. The tiara attributed to Fabergé is another perfect example: its Kokoshnik design reflects Crown Princess Cecilie’s Russian family, who gifted it to her for her wedding; from portraits we can see that she paired the tiara with her gowns in a very fashion-forward way for the very early 1900s. For so many collectors today – who seek out unique pieces with ‘soul’ – this jewel is really a masterpiece.

Tiara di diamanti -attribuita a Fabergé, circa 1903
Tiara di diamanti -attribuita a Fabergé, circa 1903

Daniela Mascetti, president of Sotheby’s Jewelry, Europe

The history of this tiara is linked to the fate of the Duchess Cecilie von Mecklenburg-Schwerin, who would become the last hereditary princess of Prussia. In June 1905, tens of thousands of people flocked to Berlin, the capital, to attend his marriage. It was the largest social event of the century still young. The extravagant celebrations lasted four days and the couple was showered with gifts, including silver, porcelain and even a splendid carriage drawn by Hungarian gray stallions, presented by the Austrian Emperor, Francesco Giuseppe I. Among the beautiful jewels given to the spouses there was the tiara attributed to Fabergé, an extraordinary gift from Cecilie’s Russian relatives.

Collana di smeraldi e diamanti, circa 1935
Collana di smeraldi e diamanti, circa 1935

But the tiara will not be the most important jewel from the point of view of evaluation. Among the period pieces, for example, there is an Art Deco necklace, attributed to Van Cleef & Arpels. The beautiful necklace is of emeralds and diamonds and was created in the 1930s by Hélène Beaumont (1894 – 1988), an American and friend of the Duchess of Windsor. The necklace has 11 Colombian emeralds for a total of over 75 carats and is estimated at 3-4 million dollars. It is also a very versatile jewel: the central sections of emeralds and diamonds in the necklace can be detached and worn as bracelets.

This is Art Deco at its absolute finest, a connoisseur’s jewel. Rare and exceptional pieces like these are the reason people collect Jewellery. The first time I laid eyes on this emerald and diamond necklace was exactly 25 years ago when we sold the Hélène Beaumont collection in Geneva. I said at the time that it was the most important row of cabochon emeralds I had seen during my then 20-year career. Today, 25 years on, that statement still holds true.
David Bennett, president of Sotheby’s Worldwide Jewelery

The other jewels

After the sale of a spectacular oval diamond of 88.22 carats in Hong Kong, in Geneva two exceptional white diamonds will be on sale. The first, a brilliant-cut stone, weighs 36.57 carats (estimate 4.7- 5.7 million). Harry Winston’s second emerald cut diamond weighing 18.86 carats is valued up to 1.2 million. Both diamonds are of color D: the highest possible chromatic classification for white diamonds and belong to the rare subgroup of type IIa diamonds – which includes less than 2% of all diamonds, including the legendary Koh-i-Noor diamonds that they are part of the jewels of the British crown. Type IIa diamonds often boast exceptional optical transparency.

Another prominent jewel is an Indian-inspired jabot created by Cartier around 1925, during the period considered the maximum creativity of the house. With oval rubies, diamonds and polished onyx, the jewel reflects the important influence of India in Cartier’s work: it is inspired by a traditional ornament worn on a male turban, known as the sarpech. Another special jewel is a necklace with emeralds and diamonds created by the Maison of Trieste Janesich around 1920. The necklace has delicately carved emeralds depicting bunches of grapes and leaves. Finally, to report a ring with a central Kashmir sapphire of 8.35 carats. Federico Graglia

The incredible jewels of the Oscars

//

The Tiffany necklace by Lady Gaga, the diamonds by Damiani and Harry Winston, Messika, Vhernier… these are the jewels of the Oscars 2019 ♦ ︎

Do you know who won the 2019 Oscars? The movie Green Book, etc.? Not only. The Oscars have won them, as far as the image is concerned, great jewels worn by great protagonists. One above all: Lady Gaga, now Tiffany’s reference actress. At the 91th edition of the Academy Awards, the singer and actress wore a truly timeless jewel: the 128.54-carat Tiffany Diamond. It is one of the biggest yellow diamonds in the world. And it has a incredible story: the Tiffany Diamond was worn last time by Audrey Hepburn for the promotion of Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

The Tiffany Diamond is considered one of the most important stones: it was discovered in 1877 in the Kimberley Mines in South Africa.

The founder of the Maison, Charles Lewis Tiffany, bought the diamond the following year, confirming the authoritativeness of Tiffany & Co. in the field of diamonds. In short, Lady Gaga, who also wore a pair of earrings with white and yellow diamonds, also by Tiffany, has attracted attention.
But it would be unfair to forget other beautiful jewels seen during the ceremony. A touch of Italy brought Willem Dafoe and Giada Colagrande, who chose to wear the Maison Damiani creations. Willem Defoe, after winning the Volpi Cup for the best male performance at the last Venice Film Festival, was nominated for an Oscar with an understanding of Vincent van Gogh in the film by Julian Schnabel, Van Gogh – Sulla threshold of eternity. He wore the Metropolitan twins by Damiani.

The American actor’s wife, Giada Colagrande, Italian recording and actress, joined her husband wearing Shirodara earrings and pendant in diamonds and aquamarine and, to complete the look, the Ricciolo ring in white gold and diamonds.

About diamonds: a cascade of diamonds is the one signed by Harry Winston. Helen Mirren, presenter, wore the Winston Cluster Suite, for a total of over 235 carats. This treasure in the form of jewelry consists of the necklace with Cluster Winston diamonds, 136.66 carats, set in platinum, the bracelet Winston Cluster Diamond, 79.08 carat, set in platinum, earrings with diamonds Winston Cluster, 22.02 carats, also these set in platinum.

Also with Harry Winston have seen Laura Dern, Jennifer Hudson and Sarah Paulson.

Laura Dern, another presenter, has walked over 115 carats of Harry Winston Diamonds: a necklace with Cascading diamond cascade, 53.99 carats, set in platinum, vintage bracelet 1959 with diamonds, 57.30 carat, set in platinum, diamond 4.07 carats earstuds, set in platinum, band ring in micropavé with diamonds, 14 karat, set in platinum, Brilliant Love Diamond Band Ring, with diamond, set in platinum. Jennifer Hudson, who performed during the ceremony, wore vintage 1972 diamond chandelier earrings, 29.59 carat, set in platinum, while actress Sarah Paulson Harry Winston’s 55.70-carat Guipure diamond necklace set in platinum and a brilliant round earring with diamond microspheres, 3.49 carats, set in platinum. Finally, Linda Cardellini (Italian name, but American), who was part of the cast of Green Book, wore diamonds from Harry Winston’s wedding collections, Belle and The One: Belle Diamond earrings, 4.68 carats, set in platinum , ring with a cushion cut diamond, 3.07 carats, set in platinum.

Many diamonds also for those who chose Messika. Like model Lais Ribeiro, who wore the 27th Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party. In particular, the model chose the Flappers choker from the Paris est Une Fête collection and the iconic Glam’Azone ring. The model also chose to wear Messika at the Vanity Fair Oscar After Party, in this case with the High Jewels Persian Drops earrings and a double Glam’Azone ring. Also in Messika is the model and actress Karolina Kurkov, with the Move High Jewelry Addiction choker from the Messika collection by Gigi Hadid, the My Twin multishapes earrings, the Move 10th Anniversary bracelet and a large Move ring. Finally, the American singer and ballerina Ciara chose Messika with the iconic Glam’Azone bracelet at the Vanity Fair Oscar After Party. And Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wore Vhernier Pirouette’s ring for the Oscar Party Vanity Fair in Beverly Hills.

Oscar and so on. After the award ceremony Beyoncé and Jay-Z, they organized an exclusive after party. And for the occasion, Katy Perry wore Messika jewelry. The famous American singer has worn the Sirenetta earrings of the Once Upon a Time collection. Giulia Netrese

The jewels of the Grammy Awards

The jewels of the Grammy Awards: Harry Winston and Tiffany shine with Lady Gaga and … ♦ ︎

Like all the red carpets, the awards and the grand galas, even the Grammy Awards were an opportunity to see big and small stars. A fortiori, given that the Grammys are considered a prize among the most important in the United States, awarded for results in the music industry. In practice, it is considered as the equivalent of the Oscar prizes in the world of cinema. For example, at the 2019 edition that took place in Los Angeles won the country singer Kacey Musgraves, the hip-hop of Kendrick Lamar, followed closely by the Canadian Drake, Kacey Musgraves, Childish Gambino …

But the Awards were also an opportunity to admire clothes and jewels. Here are some.

Camilla Cabello, vying for the Pop Vocal Album & Pop Solo Performance category, wore Harry Winston earrings with morganite, spinel and cluster diamonds for 30.59 carats, on gold and platinum. Also the presenter Nina Dobrev was covered by jewels of the American Maison: 10.26 carat Winston Cluster Diamond earrings on platinum, diamond brooch, diamond micropavé ring on platinum. And to parade on the red carpet a diamond ring of 8.13 carats always on platinum, a ring with princess cut diamond, and two rings with brilliant cut diamonds. Alicia Keys, on the other hand, opted for a necklace of mother-of-pearl signed Bulgari. And Katy Perry showed up with Djula’s mismatched earrings.
Earrings of the Tiffany City HardWear collection, instead, for Janelle Monae, American singer-songwriter, actress and model. But the wow effect was reserved for Lady Gaga, with a Tiffany necklace with diamonds over 100 carats. Much brighter than an award … Giulia Netrese

Harry Winston’s Candy

The most precious candies in the world: those of the Harry Winston Candy collection ♦ ︎

The candies are good, although sometimes they can have a certain price. For example, the candies signed by Harry Winston will appeal to all women, although not all women will be able to taste them or, better, wear them. The American Maison has presented an extraordinary series of cocktail rings entitled Winston Candy.

The collection offers central gems in bright colors, combined with diamonds and bright stones in matching colors.

In short, everything revolves around these sweets, which are gems selected for their beauty and quality, above average: precious mandarin garnets, rare tourmalines, up to pastel sapphires and lively spinels have been used as the colors of a palette to make the collection.
There is also a historical reference, since the collection was conceived starting from a series of archival drafts from the Fifties and Sixties, the period of maximum splendor of the Maison, with the combination and combinations of colored stones from various shapes with round brilliants. Although, in fact, Harry Winston was famous especially for diamonds, he was also known as “King of Diamonds”. But, probably, the candies were never him missing.

Harry Winston adds colored stones to his classic Loop collection ♦

Harry Winston is a luxury jewelry brand, specializing particularly in diamond jewelery, often large and of excellent quality. But not only, as evidenced by the addition of new pieces in its classic Loop collection. The diamonds, however, do not disappear: in this case they are complement of pink sapphires, aquamarine, yellow sapphires and black spinels, stones that make rings, earrings or pendants.

Diamonds and colored stones form jewels with the appearance of four-petal flowers, while in the diamond-only version they also form drops.

/

An 18 million dollar blue diamond and masterpieces of design among the 370 pieces at auction in New York with Christie’s ♦ ︎

A rare blue diamond, jewelry by Suzanne Belperron, René Boivin, Bulgari, Cartier, Harry Winston, Tiffany & Co. and Van Cleef & Arpels: the Christie’s auction is scheduled for December 5 in New York, accompanied by a simultaneous online auction from 28 November to 7 December.

Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond Ring di 8,08 carati da Bulgari (stima 13-18 milioni di dollari)
Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond Ring di 8,08 carati da Bulgari (stima 13-18 milioni di dollari)

The top piece should be a sensational Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond Ring of 8.08 carats from Bulgari (estimate 13-18 million dollars). According to Christie’s, this stone can be counted among the best blue diamonds ever on the market. But among the 370 lots for sale, there are also other stones of great appeal: a necklace with a heart-shaped pink diamond of 15.56 carats (estimate 9.5-12 million) and a ring with yellow diamond Art Déco Fancy Vivid of 8.09 carats, by Gillot & Co. (estimate: 900.000-1.200.000). Do not miss the classic colorless stones, such as the ring with diamond D classified 28.70 carats, VVS2 purity, type IIa, which comes from the heritage of financier Lee Vandervelde, who died last March: in this case the sale of jewelry will go to benefit of the Children’s Hospital and Children’s Institute in Los Angeles (estimate: 1,500,000-2,500,000).

Next to the super diamonds, for the design lovers Christie’s auction also offers a bracelet, Diamond Tube, by Suzanne Belperron (estimate 200-300.000 dollars).

The bracelet has recently been rediscovered as the important piece that launched the partnership of Belperron and Herz jewelry in 1948. Those who love vintage jewelry, there are also Art Déco pieces by Cartier, a bracelet of coral, enamel and diamonds by Donald Claflin for Tiffany & Co. (100,000-150,000) and Beribboned Heart, a heart-shaped enamel diamond and diamonds bracelet by René Boivin, which belonged to the Andy Warhol collection.

Among the contemporary pieces, in the foreground there are the earrings with diamonds and titanium, the Etcetera earrings (300.000-500.000) and the earrings with Colombian emeralds, pearls and diamonds of Bhagat ($ 150.000-250.000).

Harry Winston, hymn to New York

///

The city of New York turns into a sparkling collection of other jewelry with Harry Winston ♦ ︎

New York, New York: in addition to being the title of the famous song, the American city was the subject of films, novels and works of art. And now also a collection of fine jewelry. New York is the protagonist of the 32-piece collection signed by Harry Winston, one of the jewelers that most identifies with the city.

The jewels of the New York collection are inspired by architecture, but also by sounds and panoramas of the city.

Bracciale con diamanti, smeraldi e zaffiri ispirato a Central Park

But be careful: do not think about finding jewels with icons that are so popular with tourists, like the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building. New York is seen, instead, through situations and details related to the history or taste of the founder of the Maison: for example, the eagles of cast iron that in the early twentieth century were used as a frieze for street lamps are transformed into jewels of the Eagle line, with shape of wings made up of diamonds. Throughout the collection there are eight different lines of jewels.

City Lights is obviously inspired by the bright lights of Broadway with jewels that use precious stones: emeralds, rubies, sapphires.

Brownstone alludes to the sandstone used in the Upper West Side, the neighborhood where Winston was born, and in this case the jewels have angular baguette diamonds arranged in a sparkling pendant necklace and chandelier pendent earrings. The turquoise and sapphire blue sugar pan version of each (also available in blue and sapphire yellow) winks at the Art Deco architecture found elsewhere in the city. Or the 718 line, which is the street number of Fifth Avenue where the Harry Winston flagship store is located. In short, it is a way to visit the city certainly fascinating. Giulia Netrese

At auction the jewels of the former Olympian

//

From the Olympic gold to the gold of the jewels: Bonhams auctioned those of the former champion Katherine Domyan ♦ ︎

Gold attracts gold. It is not a magnetic effect (in fact, gold does not behave like iron), but a general principle. Katherine Domyan, twice a gold medalist in the Olympic games for Hungary, has become fond of another kind of gold in her life, that of jewels. And now Bonhams, in New York, at 21 september auctioned the collection of the former athlete, who disappeared in October 2017.
An adventurous story that of Katherine Domyan. In 1952 in Helsinski and in 1956 in Melbourne he won the gold medal of the 10 freestyle. Meanwhile, the revolt against the communist regime broke out in Budapest. The athlete then decided to escape to the West, along with 42 other Hungarians who competed in Australia.

After some time, Domyan was able to move to the US, where he married another Hungarian Olympic champion, Arpad Domyan. The two then founded a real estate company and gained a solid estate. Including high-quality jewelry such as an Art Deco ruby ring, a diamond bracelet by Van Cleef and Arpels, 36 jewels by David Webb, including a rock crystal bracelet and a necklace of emeralds and diamonds in addition to pieces by Harry Winston, a ring with 23.13 carat emerald cut diamond and a necklace with diamonds of 86.30 carat diamonds. The estimate for the collection is between $ 2.1 million and $ 3.2 million. Federico Graglia

Jar and a pink diamond are the stars at Christie’s

A pink diamond and a ring of Jar are the stars of Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in New York ♦ ︎
Spring returns to pink, like peach blossoms and like the diamond that Christie’s sells at the Magnificent Jewels auction in New York on April 17th. The diamond is mounted on a platinum and rose gold ring. It is an 8.42 carat stone, intense rose fancy brilliant cut but «modified rectangular», VVS1 clarity and «potentially internally impeccable». On the sides the stone has two other baguette diamonds. The ring is valued between 4 and 6 million dollars.
But, of course, the auction has other interesting pieces of Maison such as Boucheron, Bulgari, Cartier, David Webb, Harry Winston, Tiffany & Co. in the catalog. It is not necessary to be a millionaire to participate (also online) in the purchase: prices start at 4000 dollars. Among the most popular pieces there are classic jewels, like a necklace of diamonds and emeralds by Van Cleef & Arpels (estimate up to 1.25 million dollars), or rings with big diamonds.
Two rare Jar
But there are also rare jewels and coveted by collectors, like two pieces signed Jar, designer who has fans all over the world. If you do not know him, know that Jar represents the initials of Joel Arthur Rosenthal, born in 1943 in New York in a family of modest possibilities. He graduated from Harvard in 1966, and then moved to Paris. Before joining the Olympus of jewelry, he worked as a screenwriter. She refined her skills with Bulgari in New York, and then returned to Paris where she opened a boutique in Place Vendôme with her partner, Pierre Jeannet. His rare pieces are received almost like an event. In this case, Christie’s auctioned jewels will benefit the Art for Justice Fund, which aims to reform the justice system in the United States.
Jar’s jewels at auction are, therefore, a Moghul style brooch, created in 1999, in silver and 18-karat gold. It consists of a kind of stylized dome with an amethyst pavé surrounding a 14.77 carat cushioned sapphire. The pendant has a border of diamonds and a tassel of natural pearls. Not only that: the back is a pavé of diamonds. Necklace and pendant are valued up to $ 300,000. The second piece is, apparently, more traditional: a ring. In reality, the 22.76-carat oval diamond, color D and VVS1 clarity, is suspended in a thin flush mount with a micro-pavé on platinum. In this case the maximum estimate is 3.5 million. Baselworld 2018, selection and news

Baselworld 2018 starts with the selection. But news jewelry are not lacking ♦ ︎
“The world is changing fast. Faced with this challenge, there are only two alternatives: to grow larger or to concentrate. We have chosen to concentrate”. The words of Sylvie Ritter, managing director of Baselworld, have opened the new edition, the number 101, of the great fair dedicated to luxury watches and jewelery. Indeed, more and more luxury, because if Baselworld 2017 counted 135,000 total visitors, down from 145,000 in 2016, in November the Mch group, which organizes the fair, announced that it would have halved the list of exhibitors and reduced the duration of the event, two day less, in response to the difficult phase recorded by the Swiss watchmaking players (the export of Swiss watches, however, after two years of crisis started to rise again at + 12.6% in the first few months of 2018). Baselworld also reduced the rental fee for the stands by 10%.
The result is that in Basel there are about 700 exhibitors, almost halved compared to 1,300 in 2017, when they had already fallen by 200 compared to 2016, but still the past year attracted 106 thousand buyers and 4,400 journalists (including those of gioiellis.com). And yet, if there are no more brands like Movado or Eberhard in watchmaking, there are always leading names like Rolex, Patek Philippe, the Swatch group with its many brands, some of which, like Omega. There is also the Lvmh group with Maison like Bulgari and Tag Heuer. And there are many top brands of jewelry, from fashion like Swarovski, or haute joaillerie with Graff, de Grisogono or Harry Winston, up to small Maison but with great creativity like Alessio Boschi, and the classic brands of Italian jewelry, Nanis, Giovanni Ferraris , Annamaria Cammilli, Picchiotti, Fope, Leo Pizzo, Casato, just to name a few. In short, Baselworld has lost weight, but still retains a lot of charm: the 101 years brings them well. We will tell the news in the next few days.

The jewels of the Oscar 2018

The jewels worn at the Oscars 2018 by the movie stars: Damiani, Tiffany, Harry Winston and … ♦ ︎
Who won the 2018 Oscars? All right, the jury has rewarded film, director, actress … But who, really, has won the statuette of liking in front of the flash of the photographers? Much of the success (or failure) depends on the dress and the jewelry worn. As always, the stars who parade on the red carpet in the most important evening for the cinema compete in the exhibition of jewels that, it is good to remember for those who do not know, are almost never owned by them, but are lent by the great Maison. Impossible to list all the jewels that have sparkled under the lights of the evening.
Damiani, for example, was chosen by Giada Colagrande. The Italian recording and actress, who joined her husband Willem Defoe as Best Supporting Actor for the film Un sogno called Florida, wore earrings and ring from the Eden collection in white gold and diamonds, the Masterpiece Eden necklace and bracelet in white gold and Damiani diamonds.
Gal Gadot, on the other hand, wore a jewel from the Tiffany Blue Book 2018 collection: a necklace with a 27-carat aquamarine and more than a thousand diamonds. “Inspired by the Tiffany Art Deco jewels of the 1930s, the platinum and diamonds necklace with aquamarine has classic lines but a graphic form, which gives it an absolutely modern look”, commented Reed Krakoff, Tiffany & Co.’s chief artistic officer « It took about a year to make it with perfect stones, supplied in a totally ethical manner ». In Tiffany also the director Greta Gerwig, who wore a collier from the Maison’s archives designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1910-1920), earrings with diamonds and a ring with sapphires. And in Tiffany also Zoey Deutch, with earrings and rings in platinum and diamonds.

Harry Winston Legacy

Harry Winston’s Legacy collection, the ultimate for those who love diamonds ♦ ︎
In 2013, Harry Winston bought a pear-shaped, D-color, 101.73-carat diamond-worthy diamond for more than 26.7 million dollars in a Christie’s auction in Geneva. A record. The diamond was baptized by Winston’s Legacy. It was a surprise, but only for those who do not know enough about the history of the American Maison: more than a third of the world’s most precious stones have gone from their hands. It is no coincidence that the founder, Harry Winston, was named the King of Diamonds. And now the company presents a new collection inspired by that extraordinary stone: the Legacy collection consists of 22 jewels, of course white diamonds. Not only that, it should be pointed out that almost all D-color diamonds are internally perfect. Legacy is also a tribute to the founder’s legacy, mythical history. His career began in 1908 at the age of 12 when he bought a two-carat emerald for 25 cents: the owner thought it was a piece of glass. Two days later Harry Winston sold the emerald for $ 800. His career started from there. In the emerald have been added stones made from old jewels with too dated or imperfect frames.
To this skill are added spectacular shots, such as the purchase, in the 1930s, of a large diamond, a rough, Jonker, of 726 carats, for the very high figure of $ 750,000. It was the first large diamond cut in America, transformed into 12 stones, including the Jonker I 125.35 carats. After Jonker, was followed by other great, impressive diamonds.
The founder disappeared, 1978, today Harry Winston is owned by the Swatch group, but has not changed philosophy. Diamonds from the Legacy collection are often cut into pear-shaped, like their older brother or marquise cut. Everything about jewelery is 836.68 carats, just a treasure. Like a necklace with round and marquised diamonds, of which more than 50 percent is of D color and is internally perfect. Other pieces were made following the drawings in the Maison’s archives. They would have made Harry Winston proud. Giulia Netrese

Harry Winston top lot at Christie’s

An emerald ring of Harry Winston was the king at Christie’s auction in London ♦ ︎
A look at the result of the important Jewels auction of Christie’s in London. The 1870s Victorian parure with diadems and necklace, diamond stars garland, were not the top lot, but ranked third. The set, made by Collingwood & Son, was sold for over $ 404,000 (on an estimated 100-150,000): a good result, but the most prestigious crown is touched by a Colombian Emerald ring with a rectangular cut signed Harry Winston. The ring was sold for $ 480,000 to an anonymous buyer. It should be noted that 44% of sales were concluded online or by phone. Great result also for a Sri Lankan Sapphire pendant with 50.36-carat cushion-shaped pendant, sold for $ 434,000. Federico Graglia

Do not forget about Harry Winston

Do not forget about me, blooms in the Harry Winston collection ♦
Let’s say it straight away: romantic love is a good thing. But when it’s accompanied by a jewel is even better. On the other hand, gifting a jewel is a way to tie a woman to yourself. In short, it’s like saying it: remember me, do not forget. And that is why the forget-me-not flower is associated with hearts affair. And sometimes it is also associated with jewels, such as Harry Winston’s Forget-Me-Not collection.
As you will know, Maison Harry Winston is one of the most renowned for its diamond jewelery. And here, in fact, that the flowered meadow with forget-me-not flower is composed of diamonds on white gold. All the jewels (two necklaces, earrings, ring bracelet and even a pendant) proposed reproduce the corolla with six flower petals with pear-shaped, rounded and marquise stones. Needless to say that diamonds are top quality. And, in fact, how you could forget who gives you one? Lavinia Andorno

Anna Hu crowned by Christie’s

Anna Hu in exhibition at Christie’s, it’s the top of her fast career fast as a light (of genius) ♦
Everybody know she is one of the stars of the world jewelery. But few would have guessed that Anna Hu would be the first contemporary designer to be invited by Christie’s to exhibit in her new hall at St James in London. A selection of his refined jewels, which are considered artworks, were on display for five days. On the other hand, in addition to incredible architectures with gemstones, the jewels of Anna Hu often inspire paintings and sculptures. In short, in many cases they are a kind of meta-art, that is art of art.
Anna Hu was born in Taiwan in 1977, but since childhood she has travels the world together with her father, a merchant of precious and rare gems. Curiously, however, she began her artistic fortune as a cellist: she even won several prizes, but a shoulder injury forced her to stop. Luckily, you could add. She then took the jewelery road. After the Gia, she placed in the drawer two academic titles related to jewelery from Parsons School of Design and Columbia University. A sort of record.
She worked at Christie’s, Van Cleef and Arpels, and Harry Winston. Then, she opened her exclusive jewelery boutique in December 2008, just 29 years old, at the New York Plaza Hotel. She create about than 30 exclusive Haute Jewelery pieces per year for lucky (and wealthy) collectors. In short, she has already achieved success. But in reality her career is still to be written. The adventures of an hexagon-shaped emerald

An hexagon-shaped Classic Colombian emerald with an adventure story and other great pieces at auction at Sotheby’s ♦
The emeralds are usually cut with a roughly rectangular shape. Exceptions are rare. One of these is the Stotesbury emerald, one of the pieces put up for auction at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels in New York on April 25. But the most surprising aspect is that, beside the rare hexagon-shaped this stone, there is a rather complicated and charming story. The 34.4 carat Colombian emerald, which has a sales estimate 800,000 to 1,2 million dollars, looks back on a path that began in 1908, when Cartier used it for a necklace intended heir of a mining empire, Evalyn Walsh McLean.
The emerald was combined with a diamond of 94.8 carats. Three years later, the Parisian house and Miss Walsh McLean, however, have started a dispute which ended in 1912 with emerald regained control of Cartier. Then the stone was purchased by Eva Stotesbury (hence the name), wife of a wealthy banker of Philadelphia. In 1946 the family sold the stone to the New York jeweler Harry Winston, which has mounted ring and sold it to Bonfils Stanton, another lady of high society. It was sold again and has been part of a private collection since 1971.
The emerald Stotesbury, in any case is not the only piece of rod class. There are, for example, 12 historic pieces of designer Louis Comfort by Tiffany. Or it should be noted a ring with a rare diamond from 1.64 carat Fancy Vivid Green, and a crossover ring set with two Fancy Vivid Blue diamond. Besides valuable piece are a pair of earrings with square emerald cut diamonds, both more than 20 carats and classified as D color, Internally Flawless, lla type with excellent finish and symmetry.
