Marie Antoinette doubles with Christie’s

/

When we say the charm of the nobility. In spite of the French Revolution, Queen Marie Antoinette (guillotined) takes her revenge. His bracelets don diamonds (old cut, of course), silver and yellow gold, commissioned around 1776, adapted in the 19th century, and placed in a blue velvet case, were auctioned at Magnificent Jewels organized by Christie’s in Geneva. They were sold for around 7 million euros (equivalent to 7.5 million Swiss francs, or 8.2 million dollars), a figure that is almost double the maximum estimate that preceded the auction.

The jewels were bought by the queen and she bought these two diamond bracelets for 250,000 lire, which was a huge sum for the time. According to Count Mercy-Argenteau, ambassador of Austria to France, they were paid partly in precious stones from the queen’s collection and partly with the funds the queen received from her husband, King Louis XVI. At the time of the Revolution, the jewels were brought to Belgium, then passed to Madame Royale, the surviving daughter of Marie Antoinette. Now they have changed ownership.

The Geneva auction also had other interesting pieces in the catalog. A pear-cut diamond of 55.50 carats was sold for 4.5 million euros. A yellow gold brooch with drop and baguette cut diamonds and cushion cut ruby, signed Van Cleef & Arpels, was sold for 3.8 million euros. A platinum ring with an oval brilliant cut diamond of 43.19 carats totaled 3.1 million euros. In all, the auction closed with sales of over 50 million euros.

GemGenève is back, here are the exhibitors

GemGenève is back, the fair born four years ago as a highly selected alternative to the major jewelry fairs, such as Baselworld. After the obligatory break in 2020, GemGèneve takes place this year from 4 to 7 November, again at the Palaexpo in Geneva. The organizers, Thomas Faerber and Ronny Totah, also gave the event a name: The Challenging Edition. It seems, however, a challenge that has already been won, given that over 120 exhibitors from 15 countries took part, including jewelers with great coat of arms, retailers of gems and vintage jewelry.

According to the organizers, this does not mean that the climate will certainly be more reserved, more intimate than the 2019 version. Also because, as they reveal, the indecipherable situation from the point of view of health safety has made GemGèneve’s confirmation uncertain until the very end.

From July onwards, following the uncertainties linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, Ronny Totah and I have been exploring a number of different scenarios, from putting on a mini-event in a Geneva hotel to a more reduced version of the original GemGenève, and we even considered postponing the event.

Among the entries, the Swiss and American exhibitors are at the top, followed by those from Israel, Germany and Belgium. Then come houses from the UK, France, Hong Kong, Italy, India, Thailand, Austria, Russia, the United Arab Emirates and Japan.

The palpable enthusiasm of our exhibitors pushed us to put together this new 2021 edition of the show in record time – given that the final decision to go ahead with the show in its current form was taken on 20 September!’ The small-scale structure of GemGenève indeed ensures that the show can be attentive to its exhibitors’ needs and means that it can be responsive enough to be able to address these kinds of challenges.

Marie Antoinette’s diamonds at Christie’s auction

Jewels witnesses of great history: their intrinsic value adds an incalculable charm. As in the case of the diamonds that belonged to Marie Antoinette, queen of France who ended up on the guillotine during the French Revolution at the end of the eighteenth century. On 9 November Christie’s will put up for sale at auction in Geneva, as the first lot, 112 diamonds originally belonging to the queen (1755-1793). The stones are set in a historic pair of bracelets. The estimate is between $ 2 and $ 4 million.

Over the past 255 years Christie’s have offered many Historic Jewels from Royal Houses around the world. It is a privilege to be able to offer these exceptional and unique bracelets for sale at Christie’s where they will attract bidding from collectors globally. As seen in recent Geneva sales, the market for jewels of noble provenance continues to perform extremely well.
François Curiel, president of Christie’s Luxury

It is worthwhile to retrace the history of the jewel: in 1776 Marie Antoinette was queen of France for two years and already recognized for elegance and style. She couldn’t resist jewelry, especially diamonds. Her unhappy phrase (“if the peasants don’t have bread, they should eat brioche” seems not to have been uttered by her, but it conveys the idea of the time).

In any case, in the spring of 1776 the queen bought these two diamond bracelets for 250,000 lire, which was a huge sum for the time. According to Count Mercy-Argenteau, ambassador of Austria to France, they were paid partly in precious stones from the queen’s collection and partly with the funds the queen received from her husband, King Louis XVI. Recent discoveries by the jewelery historian Vincent Meylan show that in February 1777, in the personal papers of King Louis XVI, we read: “to the queen: down payment of 29,000 lire for the diamond bracelets she bought from Boehmer”.

On the run with the jewels
Count Mercy-Argenteau left his post as ambassador of the Austrian Empire to France in 1790 and settled in Brussels. On 11 January 1791 he received a letter from Queen Marie Antoinette, then a prisoner at the Tuileries in Paris. She announced that she would be sending a wooden crate for safekeeping. Mercy-Argenteau kept it closed for a couple of years. On October 16, 1793, Marie Antoinette was guillotined and in February 1794 the emperor Franz II of Austria (1768-1835) ordered the opening of the box in Brussels. The inventory included “Article no. 6 – A pair of bracelets where three diamonds, with the largest set in the center, form two clips; the two clips act as clasps, each made up of four diamonds and 96 diamonds set in a collar ».

Ritratto di Maria Antonietta con bracciale

Madame Royale (1778-1851), surviving daughter of Marie Antoinette, received these jewels in January 1796 upon her arrival in Austria. Among the pieces with a traceable provenance from the Queen of France, these extraordinary bracelets are the only example to include diamonds owned by her and to maintain the exact design described in the Brussels inventory. Although it is possible that the bracelets were reassembled at a later stage, no changes were made to the overall composition and the number of diamonds, with the exception of those on the clasp, was kept identical as per inventory. Over time, the jewels have become “the property of a European royal family”, which is now selling them.

The Spectacle sold by Christie’s for $ 14.2 million

There was anticipation for the sale of the monster-diamond put up for auction by Christie’s in Geneva. The 100.94-carat diamond called The Spectacle, cataloged as D-color, was sold for $ 14.2 million (€ 11.73 million), or $ 141,000 per carat. The diamond was cut from an even larger 207.29-carat rare rough diamond. The cutting process took one year and eight months. The emerald cut was chosen because it allows to maintain the perfect geometry of the crystal.

The jewels of Napoleon’s daughter

The super diamond was not the only star of the auction. The other jewelry that attracted media attention were the nine pieces that included a tiara, a necklace, a pair of earrings, two pendants and brooches, a ring and a bracelet. Jewels that have a significant history and sold to coincide with May 5, the 200-year anniversary of Napoleon’s death. An extraordinary coincidence, because the spectacular set of sapphires and diamonds was part of the collection of Napoleon’s adopted daughter, Stephanie de Beauharnais, Grand Duchess of Baden (1789-1860). Result: the collection was sold 100%, reaching a combined total of $ 3.6 million (approximately € 3 million). Together with these jewels, the important sapphire crown that belonged to Mary II Queen of Portugal earned 1.9 million dollars (1.6 million euros).

The general balance sheet of Christie’s Geneva Spring Luxury Season includes three live and two online auctions, including jewelry, wines and watches, with a subsequent following of online sales. The three-day auction total was over $ 95 million, with participants from 50 countries. All five auctions on the agenda welcomed new customers and significant participation was seen through Christie’s Live, the online bidding tool, which saw customers from San Francisco to Moscow and Oslo to Johannesburg bidding actively. In particular, the Magnificent Jewels auction reached $ 64 million (almost 53 million euros) with sales rates of 91% per lot and 98% in value. Bidders from 29 countries participated in the auction.

Sapphires win at Sotheby’s auction in Geneva

The tiara that belonged to the Savoy family, former royals of Italy, focused attention at Sotheby’s auction of Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels in Geneva (totaled 56 million). The tiara sold for $ 1.6 million, one of the highest prices paid for such a piece of jewelry in recent years. The tiara was also advertised by Sotheby’s using an original marketing tool: it was possible to virtually wear the tiara through Instagram (this happened 22,000 times). The jewel, in natural pearls and diamonds, was most likely given to Maria Vittoria dal Pozzo on the occasion of her marriage to Amedeo I of Savoy, Duke of Aosta in 1867.

With their mix of magnificence and intimacy, tiaras have an X factor that transcends times and cultures. This tiara encapsulates all the pomp, power and presence associated with royal jewels and over the past couple of weeks, it has captured the imagination of collectors and Instagram users alike. The price achieved today is testament not only to its exceptional craftsmanship and the quality of its materials which makes it a true work of art, but also to its historical and emotional resonance.

But the tiara was not the only jewel to attract the attention of collectors. A 55.19-carat Kashmir sapphire (the largest gem of its kind ever up for auction) did even better. The gem is paired with another 25.97 carat sapphire: the stones are mounted in a 1930s diamond brooch, which belonged to Maureen Constance Guinness, Marquise of Dufferin and Ava. The jewel was sold for over $ 3.9 million.

The auction also recorded the sale of a group of seven jewels from an important collection owned by the nobility, with large diamonds and precious stones, many of which were set in spectacular designs by Harry Winston. 100% of the lots in this collection found buyers, reaching a whopping 19.8 million dollars, well above the pre-sale estimate (10.9 – 16.5 million). Among the most important pieces was a Harry Winston sapphire and diamond necklace, which holds a detachable pendant with a 111.73-carat cushion-shaped sapphire of Ceylon origin and royal blue color, sold for 4.7 million dollars.

Sotheby’s puts a large Kashmir sapphire on sale

x

Big, beautiful and expensive jewels and gems: Sotheby’s has planned a rich spring for collectors of exceptional pieces. The auction house has put on sale, for example, gems weighing over 100 carats, a psychological limit that attracts the attention of those who love or invest in precious stones.

The fascination for large gems goes back centuries. Shrouded in mystery and steeped in legend, these stones have been treasured by rulers, while also prized for their presumed magical powers, and even sometimes feared for being cursed. In recent years, by virtue of the market’s increasing connoisseurship, we have seen demand for these gems grow fast and far beyond the traditional pool of collectors. These new buyers are looking for different kinds of stones, and this is reflected in the great diversity of this season’s offering, which range from unmounted world-class diamonds and diamond-led jewellery, to pieces with noble provenance and signed jewels marrying colourful gemstones with the extraordinary craftmanship of renowned houses, such as Cartier and Harry Winston.
Gary Schuler, world president of the jewelry division

Part of this small group of exceptions is a brooch with sapphires and diamonds from the 1930s, with the largest Kashmir sapphire ever to appear at auction and which will be auctioned in Geneva on 11 May: it is a 55.19 carat oval gem. , along with another cushion-shaped Kashmiri sapphire weighing 25.97 carats. The jewel was part of the collection of Maureen Constance Guinness, Marquise of Dufferin and Ava (1907-1998). The estimate is 2-3 million dollars.

With their mining history dating to just a few short years at the end of the 19th century, Kashmir sapphires are among the rarest coloured gemstones known to man. Coveted for their unique set of characteristics, including their unrivalled, rich cornflower blue hue, their soft, velvety texture and the fact that they retain their lustre in any light, these gems have over the years acquired an almost legendary status. Kashmir sapphires of over 30 carats are a very rare occurrence, so the appearance of a gem of 55.19 carats – the largest ever to come at auction – is an important event. Hailing a distinguished provenance and set as a stunning brooch alongside another Kashmir sapphire, it will undoubtedly evoke much interest among collectors.

Another highlight of the auction will be Harry Winston’s brooch / pendant combination with emeralds and diamonds, circa 1974, with a 104.40-carat pear-shaped emerald of Colombian origin. Also on sale is another brooch / pendant with emeralds and diamonds, set with an 80.45-carat step-cut emerald of Colombian origin. Among the prominent pieces there are diamonds, such as the ring with a 40.08 carat emerald-cut square diamond, color D, Flawless, type IIa and a diamond ring from the Noble collection, Harry Winston Set, with a diamond a 43.24 carat pear shape, color D, clarity VVS1, type IIa Est diamond. The elegance of Nadia Morgenthaler

/

She worked for Chopard, taught at the Ecole d ’Art Appliquée in Geneva, directed the Arts Fusion high jewelery atelier but, above all, Nadia Morgenthaler has conquered a special place in the world of jewelry with her Maison. The fresh air of Lake Geneva inspired the designer the pleasure of embroidering metal and, instead of dewdrops, small pearls appeared on Nadia Morgenthaler’s jewels, like precious drops dotting rings, earrings and pendants. Now her jewels have also landed on the Net-à-porter marketplace, with seven pieces that summarize the creative path of the Swiss designer.

Her style is not imitable: Nadia Morgenthaler arrived there in 2013, after spending 25 years in the Geneva jewelery workshops. Her collections are a synthesis between a somewhat Victorian style and a little luxury of the maharajas. But they never cross over into overly flashy jewelry. They are, however, carefully crafted and, above all, have that aesthetic lightness that makes them refined and immediately desirable.

It’s a record for Spirit of the Rose

Sotheby’s called it Festival of Wonder, which included seven auctions dedicated to luxury categories. And, indeed, the total figure is astonishing: in Geneva, the auction house’s sale of jewelry and watches totaled 61.7 million dollars, 40% sold online, with 350 lots sold in less than ten days, and with the participation of 800 people in 54 countries. The highest sales in Geneva this season, points out Sotheby’s. Thanks also to the most valuable piece: the Spirit of the Rose diamond, sold for 26.6 million dollars, a record.

Successful yellow in Geneva with Christie’s

A large 28.88 carat yellow diamond, rectangular cut, VVS2, was the precious object that obtained the highest price at Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in Geneva. The diamond was sold for 3.1 million dollars. But in second place were placed two jewels by Graff: it is a bow-shaped brooch, also with a huge yellow diamond of over 107 carats in the center, sold for about 3 million dollars and a ring with a central purplish red diamond of just over 1 carat. But the red diamonds are very rare and for this reason the jewel was sold for about 2.8 million dollars.

The auction also features a large representation of art deco jewelery signed by the Maison Mauboussin, founded in 1827 by M. Rocher’s successor, received a medal in recognition of his work at the Exposition Universelle de Paris which established the firm’s solid reputation. Under the guidance of George Mauboussin, the interwar period is characterized by exoticism, which is reflected in the selection and quality of Mauboussin’s gems: jade from the East, pearls and coral from the Middle East. Goodbye Baselworld, Hour Universe arrives

Hour Universe. The after Baselworld is (also) a play on words. Hour, an English word that indicates the time span of 60 minutes, also resembles to ours. In short, a universe that alludes to the concept of time, that measured by watches. After the sensational suicide of Baselworld, the most famous fair dedicated to jewelery and watches, the organizing company Mch has changed everything.

Rendering di Hour Universe
Rendering di Hour Universe

Hour Universe will take place in Basel from 8 to 12 April 2021, covid permitting. The new initiative is described as a hybrid platform for the watch, jewelry and gemstone community with a modern digital offering throughout the year, combined with physical meetings at the show. The planned and inclusive live event aims to facilitate networking and provide an experience based on the needs of exhibitors and visitors.
Mch also promises a new hospitality concept based on fair prices and supported by the local hotel industry. The exorbitant costs for participating in Baselworld were the deterrent that put the fair in crisis.

Will Hour Universe be able to convince the big groups that have left Baselworld? It will not be easy. The big names in the luxury sector not only said goodbye, but also organized other events. Companies such as the LVMH Group greeted Baselworld, with brands that include Tag Heuer, Hublot and Zenith and the Maison Bvlgari, as well as Rolex, Tudor, Patek Philippe, Chanel and Chopard, Swatch and many others, including major jewelry brands. Many will participate in Watches & Wonders Geneva, an event that also brought the format to China. Other brands will organize events on their own. In short, the road to Hour Universe seems to be uphill.

A super pink diamond for sale

If you like the color pink and have saved at least between 23 and 38 million dollars, you can get ready to buy one of the most precious and rare diamonds ever. This is the 14.83-carat oval diamond classified as Fancy Vivid Purple-Pink, Internally Flawless, Type IIa, the largest purple-pink diamond ever to appear at auction. It will be sold on 11 November at the Magnificent Jewels auction in Geneva at Sotheby’s. Like all large stones, it also has a name: The Spirit of the Rose. And there is a reason why. The name, in fact, is inspired by a legendary ballet by Vaslav Nijinsky, Le Specter de la rose: the diamond was mined, cut and polished in Russia, which is currently the most important diamond producer in the world by volume.

Il diamante Spirit of the Rose , di 14,83-carati
Il diamante Spirit of the Rose , di 14,83-carati

Type IIa diamond, chemically the purest of all diamond crystals, often with extraordinary optical transparency. Less than 2% of all gem quality diamonds have achieved this classification. The light pink rough diamond weighed 27.85 carats: it was mined by Alrosa in the Ebelyakh field, in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), in northeastern Russia in July 2017. It was named Nijinsky, after the most famous Russian dancer. , who in the early twentieth century interpreted Le Specter de la rose in the original performance by the Ballets Russes. The oval shape of the diamond was obviously chosen to ensure that the diamond had the largest possible size. Diamond is classified as Type IIa, and therefore is chemically the purest. Diamonds in this category often have extraordinary optical transparency. But they are also very rare: only 2% of all diamonds fall into this category. Federico Graglia

A ring by Reza towering at Christie’s auction

Question: did the evil covid-19, which blocked the world, also block the demand for luxury items? Looking at the result of Christie’s auctions in Geneva, postponed in July because of the pandemic, it would seem not. Starting from the success reserved for the sale of jewelry. In short, buying (and selling) very precious jewels still seems like a good investment. Here, however, is the result of the auctions.

L’asta di Christie’s a Ginevra

Christie’s sales in Geneva achieved a combined total of $ 57.9 million for 195 jewels, 226 watches and 819 fine wines, with a combined sale of 81%. Bidders, reports the British auction house, have registered from 42 countries, on six continents. Our 102nd week of sales in Geneva took place under extraordinary circumstances with social distancing, not just at the pre-sale exhibition but also at all three live auctions. Nevertheless, collectors showed great resilience and confidence as they bid and bought all week long, starting with the Cartier clocks to fine wrist watches, rare wines to superb gems. The star of the week was a twin stone blue and white diamond ring by Parisian jeweler, Reza, which achieved $ 9.2m after spirited bidding between several telephones. A 100ct perfect D color diamond was purchased by Moussaieff jewelers who continue to acquire the rare and unusual gems of the world.

As for jewelry, the auction totaled $ 42.5 million, 88% in value and 80% per lot. Colored and colorless diamonds have remained the main attraction. And they were not only sold by telephone, but also in the hall, limited to one hundred visitors. In addition to the Reza diamond ring, a large 100.85 carat D-colored diamond, IF diamond, sold for $ 6 million to Moussaieff.
Additionally, part of the sale were a pair of magical aquamarine cabochons and single-cut diamond earrings by Margaret Jewels, a Geneva-based private jeweler, which were sold for the benefit of the Swiss Children’s Foundation. The sum of the earrings will be donated in its entirety for the benefit of the foundation’s mission to help children and young people around the world.

Goodbye de Grisogono, bankruptcy in court

Bad news for those who love high jewelry: de Grisogono, a Geneva-based company that has left its mark on the world of luxury, has filed for bankruptcy. The decision comes after a thorny financial scandal involving the ownership of the jewelry brand, Sodiam, Angola’s state-owned mining company, came to light. According to documents released recently, the company specialized in the extraction of diamonds was used by Sindika Dokolo, husband of Isabel Dos Santos, the richest woman in Africa and daughter of the former premier, to control de Grisogono thanks to black funds (about $ 1 billion), thus obtained illegally.

Gioielli de Grisogono
Gioielli de Grisogono

Isabel Dos Santos, who lives in London, is under investigation on charges of enriching herself through corruption when her father was president of the African country. The purchase of the de Grisogono brand, founded by Fawaz Gruosi, ousted about a year ago, dates back to 2012. The pot was uncovered thanks to a (highly documented) journalistic investigation by the Panorama team. According to documents discovered by journalists, 18 months after the agreement Sodiam had invested $ 79 million in the partnership, while Dokolo had invested only $ 4 million. Dokolo’s lawyers argue that the couple then invested $ 115 million in de Grisogono, but was unable to find a buyer. The jewelry company records sales of around $ 100 million and employs 65 people. And most importantly, it was one of the most innovative jewelry companies.

The design of Emmanuel Tarpin for de Grisogono

///

A collection of fine jewelry made by designer Emmanuel Tarpin for de Grisogono ♦ ︎

Until recently he was considered the golden boy of jewelery, a designer who at the age of 27 had the chance to enter among the big names in the world of gold and diamonds. Now, instead, Emmanuel Tarpin can no longer be referred to as an emerging designer. De Grisogono, the Geneva House that in high jewelery has the reputation of being innovative and, sometimes, even transgressive, has decided to make him emerge definitively.

Orecchini in oro bianco 18 carati con 955 diamanti bianchi e 963 diamanti neri

To Tarpin, de Grisogono commissioned a collection as Artist in Resident: a choice strongly desired by the new CEO, Céline Assimon. The result is called Prologue and is the first of three collections to be signed by Emmanuel Tarpin. The designer used a palette with two colors: black and white. Indeed, black diamonds have been widely used by de Grisogono. The shape of the jewels is sinuous and surprising: the designer does not disappoint the fame he has gained.

The collection includes long asymmetric earrings of white and black diamonds in the form of a twisted ribbon, with a spiral that gives the illusion of crossing the lobe. And even the bracelet and necklace have the soft appearance of a fabric that bends with soft curves. They are pieces of bold design, but at the same time reassuring. And that, for sure, are unmistakable. Innovative jewels, yet in harmony with the de Grisogono style.

Emmanuel Tarpin, who debuted on the international scene at GemGèneve, launched his first capsule collection two years ago and, in December 2017, his realistic Geranium Leaf aluminum earrings were sold by Christie’s. He then received the Rising Star award from the Fashion Group International and was named Designer of the Year at the Town and Country Jewelry Awards. And he’s only at the beginning.

Also with the precious blue stone, a fan-shaped 1937 Cartier brooch is made, with a cushion-cut sapphire of 9.09 carats, other sapphires of different sizes, and brilliant-cut diamonds and baguette. Equally precious, again by Cartier, is a tiara-necklace from the 1930s. The central panel is detachable, pierced, between a graduated series of palmettes and arrowhead motifs, set with circular cut and cushion-shaped diamonds. In addition to turning into a necklace, the central element can be detached and transformed into a brooch.
