Nadia Morgenthaler, standing ovation earrings

The new earrings by Nadia Morgenthaler, a hymn to the goldsmith ability and creativity ♦ ︎

Nadia Morgenthaler is one of the most popular designers. And rightly so. She has succeeded in building her world in the world of jewelry. An eco-environment that provides, as she describes herself, a colorful universe and an atmosphere at the same time 1900, maharajah, noble and real. We add: there is also a pinch of the Victorian era. This mix of tomorrow and yesterday, of the future and the past, is mixed in the ability to build jewels that offer the feeling of being disconnected from fashions and momentary passions. From Geneva, where she lives and works, Nadia Morgenthaler has built a bridge that connects her with the great world stage of fine jewelry. Also because her creations always run on the thread stretched between aesthetics and engineering ability.

At GemGèneve, for example, Nadia Morgenthaler presented, among other things, a pair of standing ovation earrings, with 170 diamonds, two small square diamonds of 5.14 carats and two large 11.63 carat diamonds, 46 natural pearls set in gold and silver. Another piece that will earn other admirers.

Ming’s fusion jewels

British fusion designer Ming, between Europe and Asia, and her magnificent jewels for connoisseurs ♦

Blue eyes, pink skin, London accent. Her name is Ming. Ming Lampson, British designer, but born in Hong Kong, a former colony of Her Majesty. Now, however, she lives and works in London, with a (well-deserved) reputation as a very exclusive designer. She sells her creations only to those who understand them, she explains to gioiellis.com, because conceiving and creating a jewel is like creating a work of art that, which can be appreciated only by those who know the value and characteristics of stones and work behind a pair of earrings or a necklace.

Ming, Wisteria necklace
Ming, Wisteria necklace

Speaking of necklaces: in GemGèneve Ming showed a truly exceptional one, which reproduces a wisteria plant: white gold, diamonds, sapphires.

Ming learned about gems in Jaipur, India, where she was an apprentice of a local goldsmith, but also studied jewelry design at London’s Sir John Cass college, diamond appraisal at the Gemmological Association of London, and colored stones and pearls at Gia in the United States. She began her activity as a designer in 1998 and opened her atelier in Notting Hill, London, in 2007, specifically creating custom-made jewelry.

In addition, her birth in Asia led her to create jewelry by merging her Chinese roots with her British education and European craftsmanship. The Wisteria necklace is an example of this fusion. But she is also attracted by the delicate Japanese minimalism, as evidenced by the two collections, Oriental Garden and Reverence for Nature, both inspired by the Far East. Each collection consists of 15 unique pieces, all imbued with Ming’s aesthetics.

GemGeeve is ready to go again

GemGèneve is already preparing for the third edition, thanks to the success of the second appointment ♦ ︎

The third edition of GemGèneve will take place from 7 to 10 May 2020. That is immediately after the Sihh, the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie which is scheduled from 26 to 29 April and a few hours away from Baselworld, a trade fair set from 30 April to 5 May of next year. It seems a confirmation and also a challenge: once the second edition is closed, GemGèneve is starting to be a consolidated reality in the jewelery scene.

It’s fine, perhaps, what the organizers call “the intimate and conscious character of a fair that offers a unique alliance between a wide variety and quality of precious stones, ancient and contemporary jewels, as well as the competence and services of prestigious gemmology laboratories “.

Thomas Faerbe (a sinistra) e Ronny Totah (a destra)

The two co-founders of the event, Thomas Faerber and Ronny Totah, are satisfied: the second edition of GemGèneve saw an additional 42% and 63 new exhibitors from all over the world, which then rose to 210, also from Taiwan, or from Ukraine. Attendance increased by 11%: 4,800 visitors, 37% Swiss and 63% foreigners. Of course, we are far from the numbers of Baselworld, which despite the crisis of recent years has registered 81,000 visitors. But GemGèneve is a niche event. “Let’s face it: we did not expect to conclude big business, but being here is useful for building relationships”, confided to gioiellis.com a GemGèneve exhibitor who prefers to remain anonymous.

The 2019 edition also marked continuity and the advent of distinctive events and exhibitions, such as the Designer Vivarium and its new contemporary jewelers, emerging talents, as well as conferences, seminars and round tables led by renowned experts. For the second consecutive year, GemGèeve has also collaborated with Head, the Geneva School of Art and Design and the Hej, Haute Ecole de Joaillerie in Paris. In short, the challenge of GemGèneve continues.

Syz Fireworks, the fantasy doubles

/

The jewels of the new Syz Fireworks brand, founded by Suzanne and Isabelle Syz. With the debut in GemGèneve ♦ ︎

Some say that a daughter-in-law and mother-in-law never agree. Not true, at least in jewelry. Do you want the proof? That of Suzanne and Isabelle Syz, founders of Syz Fireworks. The new brand debuted at GemGèneve and with a trunkshow on Moda Operandi. The jewels of Syz Fireworks join those already acclaimed by Suzanne Syz, who has invented a cheerful, transgressive style, also innovative from a technical point of view, since she has staked everything on the use of titanium and unconventional shapes.

Orecchini di Syz Fireworks

The jewels of the original Maison, however, are in a price range that not everyone can reach. Syz Fireworks promises the same creative verve, but with a more affordable cost, on average from 2,500 to 8,000 euros. The jewels are always in titanium, with small diamonds set. Life is too short to wear boring jewelry, say the two Syz. And certainly the jewels of the newborn brand will not bore anyone either.

GenGèneve’s second chance

GemGèneve includes gems, designers, vintage jewelery, diamonds and … The second edition starts ♦ ︎

Started in 2018 as an adventure on which not many were ready to bet, GemGèneve returns (9-12 May) with more exhibitors and with a series of collateral events that certify its vitality.
For example, Elizabeth Fischer together with Vivienne Becker will address the issue of the relationship between jewelery design and contemporary society. Another meeting is dedicated to Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, explorer, adventurer, merchant and narrator of his wanderings, who helped develop the knowledge of elsewhere in Europe and the taste for precious stones. In short, an articulated and fully organized fair.

And so, the idea of two jewelers, Thomas Faerber and Ronny Totah, tired of the Basel formula, could have had an uncertain destiny. Instead it seems a success. The second edition of GemGenève sees the presence of around 200 exhibitors, with a large presence of those who buy and sell precious gems, diamonds, and even vintage jewelry. But not only.
Interesting, for example, the two sections dedicated to emerging designers, with Ena Iro, Horowicz Fine Jewelery, Pierre d’Alexis and Syz Firework, and the Design Vivarium area, with the presence of Alexandra Jefford, Cora Sheibani, Milio, Ming, Mr. Lieou, Nadia Morgenthaler, Ninotchka, Racine Geneva, Sean Gilson, Tatiana Verstraeten, Tenzo. GemGèneve preview in New York: here are the first jewels presented to the media ♦

Countdown to GemGenève, the elite fair which will open on May 9, in Geneva, Switzerland. The event was previewed in New York: a non-random choice, aimed at increasing media interest even overseas.

GemGèneve is also an opportunity for vintage jewelry lovers. In New York, for example, some pieces were shown at the Geneva event: a Victorian necklace with sapphires and diamond fringes by Gros Diffusion, a double-necked chain with two pendants by the Art Nouveau master , Rene Lalique, dated about 1895, also by Gros Diffusion. Composed of intricate enameled bonds, with a neo-Renaissance flavor, the initials E and M are intertwined on the necklace, and set with amethysts and pearls, the chain, two necklaces, has an aristocratic origin. Originally it belonged to Count Edmond de Pourtales and his wife Melanie de Pourtales.

The Art Deco style, and in particular Orientalism, was represented by a magnificent enamelled gold cigarette case, made by the Parisian master of jewelry, Lacloche Frères, around 1925, by the New York retailer, Palais Royal. The scene depicts a Geisha, set in a Japanese landscape, which tells Lacloche’s specialty in creating orientalist-style boxes.

Another vintage jewel was shown at the preview by the New York antique jewelry merchant, Pat Saling: a coral beaded sautoir, with a multi-gem center with a lion’s head inspired by the African mask, made by Cartier, London, 1975 for Antonio O. Fernandez, diplomat, businessman and passionate collector. But the preview was even richer: the appointment of GemGèneve promises well, we’ll see.

GemGèneve get 200 exhibitors

The second edition of GemGèneve approaches and touches the 200 exhibitors. Here is the key to success ♦ ︎

Are jewelery fairs seriously ill, or only Baselworld has a big fever? The question bounces from one smartphone to another of the operators. If we consider the outcome of the last edition of Baselworld, that is decreased in a few years from 1600 to about 500 companies present, we could indicate the Swiss event formula the problem to be solved. Especially since, just a few kilometers away, in Geneva, another fair born of the initiative of two Baselworld’s former exhibitors, seems to meet surprising consents.

Il PalaExpo che ospita GenGenève
Il PalaExpo che ospita GenGenève

GemGenève, born last year from the idea of two jewelers, Thomas Faerber and Ronny Totah, displeased of the Basel formula, could have had an uncertain destiny. Instead it seems a success. In fact, the second edition of GemGenève announces around 200 exhibitors. That is a little less than half of Baselworld. Not bad for a fair born from a year and without a consolidated experience in organizing events of this kind.

Gioielli d’epoca a GenGèneve

It should also be noted that GemGenève (9-12 May) is only a month and a half after the closure of Baselworld (26 March) and 15 days before Couture in Las Vegas. Yet it has received support. To increase the specific weight of the appointment, the two founders went to the Jewelery show in Hong Kong to find new participants. Among which there will be, for example, the Albion Art in Tokyo, one of the Japanese fine jewelry houses, or the diamond specialist Dehres. Furthermore, there are many precious gem dealers who have decided to opt for GemGèneve, much less expensive, with simple and no-frills logistics. And some Maison, like Gorgoglione, have decided to be present at both events.

GemGenève 2018
GemGenève 2018

Furthermore, the fair is easy to reach: it takes place practically in the same area as Geneva airport and those arriving by car will find parking in the same building as the exhibition. In short, what is the right formula? Baselworld aims to become an active platform throughout the year, and promises a show, as was the case with fashion shows and jewelery in the midst of exhibitor booths. GemGenève focuses instead on low cost, with a minimal and sober style. The answer at buyers.

11 designers for GemGenève

The 11 independent jewelers who will participate in the Designer Vivarium, at GemGenève ♦ ︎

It is called Designer Vivarium: a name that recalls a space dedicated to a species cataloged by the natural sciences, but which is instead an area of GemGenève for independent jewelers. And so, yes, the independent designers are a strange species, even if unknown to the heirs of Darwin. The fair, in its second edition, will be held from 9 to 12 May at the Geneva Palaexpo. And, like last year, it will reserve an area for small innovative brands: a space that has been at the center of visitors’ interest. The Designer Vivarium was curated by the jewelery expert Vivienne Becker, and has been expanded to include more designers. Here are the 11 brands that will exhibit their jewelry at GemGenève 20198.

Nicholas Lieou
Born and raised in Hong Kong, he studied in Europe, taking a masters degree in London at the prestigious Royal College of Art, before working for major jewelers in London and New York. He is a cerebral and passionate designer, who mixes a scholarly approach with art and imagination to revitalize the classicism of high jewelery. For example, in jewelry inspired by the myth of Daedalus, with diamonds in the shape of stylized wings.

Alexandra Jefford
Designer born in Geneva, based in London, which draws on his artistic training to create jewelry deeply considered modernists of powerful line and bold form, color and consistency, often incorporating the engraving of the illustrator that was his specialty. Contrasts darkness and light.

GemGenève increases the number of exhibitors

The news of the next edition of GemGenève: the number of exhibitors rises by 22% ♦ ︎

While VicenzaOro is still underway and while Baselworld warms up its engines to prepare for its toughest appointment, the GemGenève backoffice is at work. Many wondered whether the first edition of the gem and jewelery trade show, organized in May 2018, would be followed by a second one. The answer is yes: the second edition of GemGenève will be held from 9 to 12 May 2019 at the Geneva Palaexpo.

The new appointment also has a theme: Find and Feel, to emphasize the importance of direct experience even in a period dominated by the digital.

Gioielli d'epoca
Gioielli d’epoca a GemGenève 2018

GemGenève has been an idea of two industry veterans, Thomas Faerber and Ronny Totah, who operate in Geneva. The event was also an initiative in controversy with Baselworld, a fair in the crosshairs of many jewelry operators because of the high costs required for participation. It has had a good success, with about 4300 visitors, 50% non-Swiss (including the journalists of gioiellis.com).
GemGenève, in fact, is a formula that has convinced many. Jewelers, antique dealers and precious stones merchants find themselves in a smaller space than large fairs, but very specialized. And so the number of exhibitors for 2019 is 22% increase compared to 2018: there are about 180 houses already registered for the new edition, personally selected by Thomas Faerber and Ronny Totah.

The 2019 will also see the continuation of the collaboration of GemGenève with the school of art and design of Geneva, Head, with a special project for students supported by the exhibitor Charles Abouchar. The Designer Showcase, renamed as Designer Vivarium, has been expanded to include new artists not yet known in contemporary international jewelery. Among other things, GemGenève 2019 will take place during the same period of the main jewelery auctions in Geneva, those of Sotheby’s and Christie’s. The premises for a repeat of success are there.

GemGenève, here are the dates of the second edition

Registration is already open for the second edition of GemGenève: it will be held from 9 to 12 May 2019, they are now 140 firms ♦ ︎

The Swiss, according to a widespread opinion, are punctual. It is not right: they arrive well in advance, especially if it is jewelry. Here, then, is the new date set for the second edition of GemGenève: 9 – 12 May 2019. Ever at the Geneva Palexpo. After the success of the debut, at the end of May 2018, the organizers decided to replicate the experience, also at the request of the exhibitors who took part in the first edition. And, even if the dimensions of this jewelry fair are hardly comparable with those of nearby Basel, GemGèneve is in fact added to the ranks of the disgruntled “secessionists” of the management of Baselworld. To promote the event, in fact, are jewelers and merchants of Geneva, with over 70 years of experience: Thomas Faerber, owner of the fourth generation of the Faerber Collection, and Ronny Totah, co-owner of Horovitz and Totah. Both ex-exhibitors at the great Basel fair, but dissatisfied with the costs and management of the fair.
GemGenève, on the other hand, as well as a more accessible price for the participating jewelers, also offers a different, simpler atmosphere. His goal is to complete other fairs the EPHJ (high-precision watch fair) and the SIHH (fine watchmaking hall), which are always held in the Swiss city. GemGèneve, on the other hand, focuses on a mix of ancient, 20th-century and contemporary jewels and precious stones. The first edition was attended by some big Maison, like Gorgoglione, and small avant-garde boutiques, such as Nadia Morghentaler or Fabio Salini, as well as a small army of stone dealers. The announcement of the date of the second edition indicates that there are already those who have booked a place among the booths: currently there are 140 companies registered. The second edition starts with a bang.

Emmanuel Tarpin, sparkling debut

A rising star in the sky of jewelry design: the Frenchman Emmanuel Tarpin ♦ ︎
He is French, but with a parenthesis at the Head, the prestigious school of art and design in Geneva, and he is considered one of the young lions of design. Emmanuel Tarpin is only 25 years old, but a pair of earrings designed by him have already been sold by Christie’s, last year, for $ 25,000. The first prestigious stage was, however, that of GemGenève, where he was chosen in the area dedicated to emerging designers. His production is still limited, of course, but the pieces he has already presented are of great impact. After from the aluminum earrings and diamonds in the shape of geranium leaves, sold by the auction house, in GemGenève Emmanuel Tarpin presented earrings of great impact in the form of a blue orchid, also in aluminum, with diamonds and an aquamarine in the center. Another pair of earrings has, instead, almost the spiral shape and are made of gold, garnets and sapphires. Giulia Netrese

GemGenève, the first one is good

The first edition of GemGenève was successful. And there are already those who would book for the fair of jewelry and gems next year ♦ ︎
GemGenève has convinced. The initiative of two jewelers and jewelers of Geneva, Ronny Totah (Horovitz & Totah) and Thomas Faerber (Faerber Collection), was successful. Let’s face it: not many, a couple of months ago, were ready to believe it. GemGenève was born as an alternative to Baselworld, although with characteristics and, above all, different dimensions. At Baselworld, a strong and convinced trade fair of its leadership moves straight on its line, with the precision of a Swiss watch that, even though now in a small size, has nevertheless attracted the participation of 1300 exhibitors. GemGenève, on the other hand, resembles a boutique for refined customers, where a hundred brands have been found, with a lot of precious stone dealers: the distance is sidereal.
But will it always be like this? For a start, GemGenève is thinking for a second ediction next year. And, unofficially, it transpires that applications for membership of the second GemGenève are double that of 2018. The boutique could expand.
“Yet the price of the individual exhibition spaces is not very different from that of Basel,” explains a long-standing exhibitor, who also takes part in the fairs in Vicenza, Las Vegas and Hong Kong. “But GemGenève is generally less expensive from a logistical point of view. Furthermore, the organization is certainly more friendly ».
The Geneva fair, in short, seems to have satisfied the participants, although there are those who stress that in the face of much interest, even by the buyers, of real business, signed, not many have been seen. But it is also understandable: despite the prominent names present GemGenève must still contend with the leadership of the other Swiss city and the looming (on the calendar) appointment in Las Vegas, which is also the capital of gambling. But for now the bet was won by Geneva.

Collectible Jewels in GemGenève

In Geneva, a new appointment with collectible jewelery and selected gems: GemGenève ♦ ︎
So far, the highlights of high-end jewelry have been few: Baselworld, first of all, a unique story, now resized. Then, in different ways and situations, VicenzaOro, Jck and Couture in Las Vegas, to which was added the Hong Kong Fair and, finally, Dubai. Beyond these events there was also the Sihh, Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie Genève, centered however above all on the market of high-end timepieces. Now the world of jewelery and gem fairs has one more rival: GemGenève. The event is promoted by jewelers and merchants from Geneva, with over 70 years of experience: Thomas Faerber, owner of the fourth generation of the Faerber Collection, and Ronny Totah, co-owner of Horovitz and Totah. The initiative also marks a marked split-up from Baselworld, considered unattractive for antique or collectible jewelery.

The appointment
The city that is the capital of watchmaking is also home to refined merchants of gems and vintage jewelry. Switzerland itself seems to symbolize this mix of discretion and luxury, of elegance, but also of business. GemGenève is considered by the organizers a new kind of fair, “a new approach aimed at revealing the true spirit of the jewelry world, showing off its experience and excellence”. GemGenève will be an intimate, elegant, contemporary and user-friendly show with a hundred high-level exhibitors. The fair will be held from 10 to 13 May at the Geneva Palaexpo. An opportunity for those who love precious stones, diamonds and pearls, antique jewelry, but also contemporary design jewels.
Beware of the date: it is no coincidence that the days coincide with the main auctions of jewelry and watches in Geneva, which attract the best buyers in the world, those of the Magnificent Jewels of Christie’s and Sotheby’s. And, not by chance, Christie’s has looked kindly at the initiative, with a non-secondary participation and a stand. In Geneva new jewels by Robert Procop and Angelina Jolie

The new jewelry signed by Robert Procop and Angelina Jolie at GemGèneve. Profits from the sale of the collection for an NGO ♦ ︎
The jewels of Angelina Jolie arrive in Geneva. Or, better, the Style of Jolie collection, born from the collaboration between the jeweler Robert Procop. In fact, the designer is one of the 100 participants at GemGenève, the event dedicated to exclusive gems and jewelery (10 to 13 May at the Geneva Palaexpo). The feeling between the actress and the designer was born in 2012, when the jeweler from Beverly Hills collaborated with Angelina Jolie to create a collection with the aim of donating funds to the association co-founded by the actress, The Education Partnership for Children of Conflict. The NGO has as its goal the construction of schools and provide education for children in areas with conflicts. Both Procop and Angelina Jolie have declared to donate 100% of the profits of the collection for the noble cause.
The jewels of the collection are, in fact, among the novelties in the program of GemGèneve, in addition to the pieces of the high-end line. The collection includes unique creations with exceptional Colombian emeralds and jewels with tourmalines, green beryls and citrines. Giulia Netrese
