GemGenève is back, here are the exhibitors

GemGenève is back, the fair born four years ago as a highly selected alternative to the major jewelry fairs, such as Baselworld. After the obligatory break in 2020, GemGèneve takes place this year from 4 to 7 November, again at the Palaexpo in Geneva. The organizers, Thomas Faerber and Ronny Totah, also gave the event a name: The Challenging Edition. It seems, however, a challenge that has already been won, given that over 120 exhibitors from 15 countries took part, including jewelers with great coat of arms, retailers of gems and vintage jewelry.

According to the organizers, this does not mean that the climate will certainly be more reserved, more intimate than the 2019 version. Also because, as they reveal, the indecipherable situation from the point of view of health safety has made GemGèneve’s confirmation uncertain until the very end.

From July onwards, following the uncertainties linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, Ronny Totah and I have been exploring a number of different scenarios, from putting on a mini-event in a Geneva hotel to a more reduced version of the original GemGenève, and we even considered postponing the event.

Among the entries, the Swiss and American exhibitors are at the top, followed by those from Israel, Germany and Belgium. Then come houses from the UK, France, Hong Kong, Italy, India, Thailand, Austria, Russia, the United Arab Emirates and Japan.

The palpable enthusiasm of our exhibitors pushed us to put together this new 2021 edition of the show in record time – given that the final decision to go ahead with the show in its current form was taken on 20 September!’ The small-scale structure of GemGenève indeed ensures that the show can be attentive to its exhibitors’ needs and means that it can be responsive enough to be able to address these kinds of challenges.

The new challenge of Vicenzaoro

A fair to forget (the pandemic), a fair to remember (one of the Italian excellences, jewelry), a fair to do business: Vicenzaoro September (10 to 14 September) has a difficult, but not impossible, mission. The adhesions have been excellent, considering the period, and hopefully the largest European event (given that Baselworld has not yet risen) in the world of jewelry will return to the glories of the golden years.

At the moment, in any case, the organizing company of Vicenzaoro, Ieg, has over 800 exhibiting brands (about 30% international) and buyers arriving from Europe and the Middle East, with top Russian and American buyers. The return in presence was essential to restart, after Green Pass or body temperature control, use of the vaccination title mask in English that shows the type of vaccine, necessarily approved by Ema (therefore, no Chinese vaccine and not even the Russian Sputnik ) for those coming from abroad.

There are many major leading brands present, from Damiani to Roberto Coin, from Fope to Gismondi 1754, but there are also many smaller jewelery companies which, however, represent an important slice of manufacturing and jewelery, such as Antonini, Mattioli , Annamaria Cammilli, Nanis, Giovanni Ferraris, Davite & Delucchi, Vendorafa and Picchiotti. And, among non-Italians, Stenzhorn, Fabergé, Tirisi, Yeprem, Akillis, Yoko London. In addition to business, as always in Vicenzaoro, there is a full program of conferences, workshops and training sessions, which we have already talked about on gioiellis.com.

In addition to wearable jewels, those who produce technology jewels also return with T. Gold, the international exhibition for machinery for the design and production of jewels. And for lovers of vintage watches and high jewelery, VOVintage is back (11-13 September), dedicated to collectors and open to the public.

The forecasts are positive: the Italian export of the gold and jewelery sector marks + 2.8% in the first five months of 2021 compared to the same period of 2019 (a comparison with + 86% compared to 2020 in the context of the health crisis is of little significance) . A positive dynamic that is also reflected in the import data. At the top of our exports are the United States and the United Arab Emirates (respectively + 67.4%, for 185.6 million in absolute value, and + 4.5% that is + 16.2 million) over the same period of 2019. In the top 5 logistic-commercial hubs in the sector such as Ireland, France and Switzerland, while Hong Kong is down strongly.

Half of the visitors expected in Las Vegas

The question is asked by all jewelery operators, sellers, buyers, companies: is it worth returning to participate in a trade fair? An answer seems to be given by a survey conducted by National Jeweler, which has investigated the intentions of traveling to Las Vegas, where the various scheduled shows will be held at the end of August. This will be the first major appointment for jewelry in the post-Covid era (hopefully). There are many expectations: even if digital platforms have made up for the lack of live contacts, seeing and evaluating the jewels in person is another matter entirely.

Gioielli al Couture di Las Vegas
Gioielli al Couture di Las Vegas

The survey conducted on 515 retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers or other professionals, however, does not dispel the doubts: the majority of respondents (77%) said they frequently or regularly participate in jewelry fairs in Las Vegas (usually in end of May-June). But for 2021 only about half, 54%, said they wanted to participate in the August appointment. Of these, 78% said they were ready to go. And, among these enterprising. 22% have already partially booked the trip and 56% completely. Also according to the survey, 85% said they wanted to participate in Jck Las Vegas, 53% in Jck’s Luxury, 37% in Couture, 36% in Agta GemFair and, finally, 26% in Las Vegas Antique Jewelry & Watch Show. Of course these are the intentions so far and reality is not necessarily more positive.

Of the 46% of respondents who said they do not want to go to Las Vegas, 32% will not change their mind, while 14% are unsure. The main reason for avoiding the trip are concerns about covid (40%), the necessary presence for the activity (28%) and unwanted dates.

Baselworld returns in 2022. But will be different

Baselworld is back. The largest jewelry and watch fair, however, will be different. How different? The point is precisely this: there are still, inevitably, many undefined aspects, as explained in an online meeting Michel Loris-Melikoff, CEO of the event, which is managed by the Swiss company Mch.

Michel Loris-Melikoff
Michel Loris-Melikoff

The last edition of Baselworld was that of 2019. But it was a smaller-scale event than in the past, after a long series of goodbyes by the big brands. The reason? Above all, the costs that have now become unsustainable: for a company, the presence at Baselworld could mean an expense of over 1 million euros, as the manager himself admitted. To the exorbitant costs has been added a lot of competition and, above all, the spread of communication via the internet. Ok, it is not the same as having direct contact with the manufacturer or viewing the object. But it facilitates contacts and, above all, it costs almost nothing. Above all, a physical space at the fair can now be obtained for about 20 thousand euros/dollars, which goes down to 5 thousand to participate in the digital platform alone.

Baselworld. Copyright: gioiellis.com

Reasons that led Baselworld to a deep reflection, which has also lengthened due to the covid. So much so that at some point Mch had decided to eliminate the Baselworld brand altogether. Fortunately, the decision was changed. Now the fair returns. When? Between 31 March and 4 April 2022: but essentially there is still an agreement with Watches and Wonders, as it is now called Fhh, an event held in Geneva and reserved for haute horlogerie. The idea is to coordinate the two events, as was already planned for 2020. The uncertainty also testifies to how long and tiring the work of convincing companies to return to Baselworld will be long and tiring. According to Loris-Melikoff, the new Baselworld will primarily be a B2B platform in the mid-range luxury segment. A concept that profoundly changes the philosophy followed up to here, which favored brands such as Chopard, Rolex or Bulgari. All companies that have decided to leave the event in the Swiss city.

As explained, the future concept combines market trends of experience marketing with the needs of the entire community in the middle and upper segment of the watch, jewelry and gemstone industry.

After the coronavirus pandemic has stalled Baselworld in the past two years, we have taken a long time to speak with our partners and exhibitors. One thing has become very clear: the brand must remain, but it must radically change.
Michel Loris-Melikoff

The intention is that the new Baselworld will be less glamorous and more of a platform on which small watch and jewelry manufacturers and gemstone dealers will be able to showcase their products and retailers will have efficient and easy access to diversity of manufacturers. Not only that: it will also become a digital platform, complemented by live events, which will be available to the jewelery, watch and gem industry 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, around the world.

Il talk show di apertura di Baselworld 2019
Il talk show di apertura di Baselworld 2019

The digital platform will be launched in the autumn, and is expected to be a forum for exchange between all relevant representatives of industry, the public and the media at Baselworld 2022. The goal is to use new tools for content creation, to enable maximum experience providing the opportunity to expand your network and exchange information on the latest trends. It will be the first independent platform that combines digital and live events.

Michel Loris-Melikoff

According to Loris-Melikoff, everyone will meet on the platform: brands, manufacturers, retailers, fans and the media. “We will offer attractive conditions and prices for all brands that want to benefit from this unique platform”, assures the manager. Finally, the new orientation of Baselworld is in line with the strategy of the Mch Group, “confirmed by the new board of directors. on community platforms in selected ecosystems (international or national), the provision of experiential marketing solutions with holistic support for customers around the world and the management of the group’s infrastructure in Basel and Zurich ».

VicenzaOro warms up the engines

What will be the return of VicenzaOro September is outlined. The great jewelery fair, which last gave way, due to a pandemic, to the reduced version of Voice, resumes the usual format with companies, buyers and, above all, a more serene atmosphere. The title devised for the next edition is The state of art. In short, a little generic: there is everything inside, more. But the idea is precisely to take stock of the situation after a year lived dangerously.

VicenzaOro, organized by Italian Exhibition Group, will be held from 10 to 14 September, obviously at the Vicenza Fair. T. Gold, the international exhibition for machinery and advanced technologies for the processes of designing and manufacturing the jewel, is also back. It is usually scheduled for January, but this year it moves to September, in the same exhibition halls. Second test for VoVintage (11-13 September), the marketplace for vintage watchmaking and jewelry, a space also open to the public of enthusiasts and collectors.

In any case, the event does not lose its digital side: companies will be able to use Ieg’s interactive business matching platform, The Jewelery Golden Cloud. Furthermore, as always, VicenzaOro will also investigate trends in styles and design, and will focus on moments of analysis and study on the state of the art of the sector with the involvement of the most experienced stakeholders and sector players that are partners of IEG. Some of these events will be visible all over the world thanks to live streaming.

Given that prudence is never too much, the application of the #safebusiness by Ieg plan remains valid, launched in 2020 to guarantee a safe and at the same time agile fair experience: the company is the first trade fair and congress player in Italy to have obtained for its offices the Gbac Star accreditation, the global certification program of international standards of cleaning, sanitation and prevention of infectious risks for environments and personnel promoted by the Global Biorisk Advisory Council (Gbac).

In May jewels at the fair with Open!

Jewelery fairs are back. From 14 to 17 May the Il Tari Goldsmith Center (Marcianise, Caserta, Italy) organizes Open!, the first event in the presence of 2021 dedicated to the entire production and distribution sector of Italian jewelery. Over 450 companies are expected to attend, including numerous guest exhibitors. Buyers and traders will have the opportunity to get in touch with the best national and international producers as well as discover the latest jewelry trends.

Il Centro Orafo il Tarì
Il Centro Orafo il Tarì

With the first edition of Open !, which took place last October, Tarì has developed an effective and highly appreciated organization model. The protocols tested ensured an optimal business experience thanks to the simplification of access systems to the Center and the rigorous organization of services. Today, with the May appointment we find ourselves facing a new challenge: transferring to the Italian gold sector a sign of confidence towards a summer recovery, as well as all the professional support necessary to support their needs.

No physical barrier, rapidity in the phases of accreditation and recognition of guests, opening of the exhibition spaces towards the internal gardens aimed at guaranteeing the optimal circulation of people, are just some of the measures recently adopted by the Goldsmith Center which has reviewed in recent months, in a rigorous and punctual way, security systems and anti-covid protocols to offer the public, but also to established companies, a place where they can do business safely, move freely and organize business meetings.
The May event will also kick off the celebrations for the centre’s 25th anniversary. Il Tarì will also present its new value identity, dedicated to an innovative and increasingly emotional vision of jewelery.I

Oroarezzo postponed to 2022

Oroarezzo, scheduled for next June, will be postponed to 2022. This was decided by the organizing company, Italian Exhibition Group, despite the new road map for the resumption of activities decided by the Italian government, but only from July onwards, together with more favorable criteria for the mobility of people from region to region. But, Ieg explains, uniform conditions for the mobility of people are still lacking at the international level, both in and out of their respective countries. This translates into a situation of uncertainty, which does not offer sufficient guarantees for an edition of the event with the international profile that has always characterized it.

OroArezzo 2018
OroArezzo 2018

It was, according to a press release, a decision shared with all the reference associations with which IEG has a frequent and productive confrontation in the design and programming of its events. The protagonists of the market agree that the current scenario does not let us imagine that as early as June 2021 large buyers from the Middle East, the United States, Asia and all other strategic Italian export markets can reach Arezzo.
Oroarezzo will therefore return in 2022 and in attendance: digital initiatives have proved useful in maintaining contact with buyers and increasing the visibility of the collections, but the demand and willingness of companies to return to operating in the exhibition halls with events remains very high. live. The new 2022 dates of the Arezzo event will be announced shortly.

Inhorgenta also canceled

It was obvious, but now the official news has arrived: Inhorgenta Munich, which was scheduled for April 15-19, has also been canceled. Germany’s most important jewelery and watch fair has announced the elimination of the event for 2021. The cause is obvious, and what is known is not worth repeating. Inhorgenta, among other things, had already been postponed compared to the normal schedule in February. Nothing to do: the next appointment has been scheduled for 11-14 February 2022. Like other exhibition companies, Inhorgenta has also provided a digital alternative, Trendfactory, for autumn 2021.

Unfortunately, recent developments in relation to the coronavirus pandemic have not moved in the direction we were hoping for. There are still far-reaching restrictions on international travel and contacts. Furthermore, the spread of the mutated virus poses a significant risk in terms of further infection process. Even if a fair in person were possible in the first half of the year thanks to the local Munich situation, Inhorgenta Munich would not be able to live up to being a very successful international flagship event. We have therefore decided to cancel Inhorgenta Munich 2021.

Tarì challenges the covid and plans an event

Despite the health emergency, Tarì, the distribution and production center in Marcianise (Caserta, Italy), is returning to an usual, not digital, event. From 12 to 15 March the goldsmith center will be the first in Italy to resume with the events physically on site, confirming the holding of Open Anteprime. The event, dedicated to jewelery, is intended as an opportunity for sector operators to preview the new spring 2021 collections in person and will be an anticipation of the usual events in May and October, considered the most important events in Italy dedicated to the B2B goldsmith market.

Il centro orafo Il Tarì
Il centro orafo Il Tarì

2020 was a very tough year for the entire jewelry sector in Italy. According to the public statistical body, Istat, in the months between March and July the market saw production halve, with a decrease of 54.3% compared to the same period of 2019, with a simultaneous rise in production prices, also due to the surge in the cost of gold. The subsequent lockdowns and limitations of the autumn and winter months did not allow to recover the large losses.

With this event we want to stimulate the market in a proactive way, working concretely to reverse the negative trend of last year and at the same time giving a signal of confidence to the whole sector.

The goldsmith center, however, has never stopped since last May, with over 400 companies actively present and operating from production to distribution. The goldsmith center also specifies that the Tarì will be “a safe environment equipped with the most advanced technologies, which will allow each guest company to devote themselves exclusively to business, with the possibility of managing their own agenda of meetings in complete safety”. Provided that the general situation does not get worse again.

Goodbye Baselworld, Hour Universe arrives

Hour Universe. The after Baselworld is (also) a play on words. Hour, an English word that indicates the time span of 60 minutes, also resembles to ours. In short, a universe that alludes to the concept of time, that measured by watches. After the sensational suicide of Baselworld, the most famous fair dedicated to jewelery and watches, the organizing company Mch has changed everything.

Rendering di Hour Universe
Rendering di Hour Universe

Hour Universe will take place in Basel from 8 to 12 April 2021, covid permitting. The new initiative is described as a hybrid platform for the watch, jewelry and gemstone community with a modern digital offering throughout the year, combined with physical meetings at the show. The planned and inclusive live event aims to facilitate networking and provide an experience based on the needs of exhibitors and visitors.
Mch also promises a new hospitality concept based on fair prices and supported by the local hotel industry. The exorbitant costs for participating in Baselworld were the deterrent that put the fair in crisis.

Uno degli allestimenti a Baselworld 2019. Copyright: gioiellis.com

Will Hour Universe be able to convince the big groups that have left Baselworld? It will not be easy. The big names in the luxury sector not only said goodbye, but also organized other events. Companies such as the LVMH Group greeted Baselworld, with brands that include Tag Heuer, Hublot and Zenith and the Maison Bvlgari, as well as Rolex, Tudor, Patek Philippe, Chanel and Chopard, Swatch and many others, including major jewelry brands. Many will participate in Watches & Wonders Geneva, an event that also brought the format to China. Other brands will organize events on their own. In short, the road to Hour Universe seems to be uphill.

Voice did it, a doubt remains

It is easy to imagine the president of Ieg (the company that organizes Vicenzaoro), Lorenzo Cagnoni, last spring in the Hamlet version, while reciting the famous monologue: to be or not to be? That is the question. That is: to be Vicenzaoro, and to propose again one of the most important appointments in the world for jewelry, or not to be and cancel the appointment, as other trade fairs have done? With some courage the company has chosen to be a third way: Voice.

Esterno a Voice
Esterno a Voice

Defined as a jewelry summit, Voice has proved to be first of all an attempt to restart the sector, requested first of all by Italian companies. Being able to set up Voice, despite the health emergency is still a ball and chain for the business, is already a success. Of course, the organizers stressed, we shouldn’t expect it to be was the usual Vicenzaoro with the only difference in the masks to wear. And while many big brands have chosen to be present, others, especially those that sell a lot abroad, have deserted the appointment. It was predictable.
Voice, interno
Voice, interno

But, in any case, the official balance sheet indicates 370 companies present, a hundred speakers in the over 600 business matching meetings organized by Ieg (one third online), with a dense schedule of appointments, seminars, conferences and talk shows. In the virtual buyers rooms, created to make up for the reduced presence of foreign buyers, over 200 commercial exchanges took place. The contents generated in the pavilions have had over 3.5 million views on digital channels. Voice, in fact, blended the physical presence at the fair with online channels. A sober, but not spartan, staging has kept the balance with the atmosphere of challenge to the stop caused by the coronavirus.
Lorenzo Cagnoni, presidente di Ieg
Lorenzo Cagnoni, presidente di Ieg

In short, it went well. But the Hamletic dilemma will arise again shortly, given that the next appointment is called, for now, Vicenzaoro January. To be or not to be? Is it possible to propose a fair like the one in previous years if the pandemic has not completely ceased or, at least, has also been reduced from a psychological point of view? Or will Ieg be induced to re-propose the Voice format? The one held in Vicenza was been the only event dedicated to jewelery from February onwards in the world. It was a risk, but we can say that the game was won. With a little out of wheezing, though.

Jewelery, even Hong Kong ko

Even Jewelery & Gem World Hong Kong said stop: no live fair. The event will take place, but in digital format from 27 to 29 October. Is not the same thing. The company that manages the fair, Informa Markets, has decided that covid also bans this appointment dedicated to jewelry. Hong Kong is the largest jewelry fair in the world, with thousands of companies and buyers arriving every year from every corner of the Earth: 40,000 visitors in 2019. But the uncertainty is too much and it is not possible to guarantee a smooth running of the event. The Hong Kong fair will return in a year, in September 2021, and will be held both live and online.

Jewellery & Gem World Hong Kong 2019
Jewellery & Gem World Hong Kong 2019

The digital event in October, Jewelery & Gem Digital World, will include meetings on digital products, industry forums, discussions and practical seminars on gemology. Informa Markets took over the jewelry events in 2018 when it acquired Ubm Asia. The other jewelry fair in the Asian city is Jewelry & Gem Asia Hong Kong (formerly the June Hong Kong Jewelery & Gem Fair) held in June, also that victim of the coronavirus.
The canceled fair was originally scheduled for September 13-19 at two locations: AsiaWorld-Expo for loose precious materials and Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Center for finished jewelry. But for the pandemic it had been moved to November 9-13. But even this solution turned out to be too optimistic.

GemGèneve has also been canceled

Another jewelry fair falls on the battlefield at the covid. It is GemGèneve, the event that in recent years took place in May and which for 2020 was scheduled from 1 to 4 November, obviously in Geneva. Surprisingly, Anthony DeMarco, a journalist specializing in the jewelry sector, reported it on Forbes.

Il PalaExpo che ospita GenGenève
Il PalaExpo che ospita GenGenève

The one scheduled for November would be the third edition of GemGèneve, which had already registered a good number of subscriptions. But the situation of uncertainty caused by the epidemic prompted organizers Ronny Totah and Thomas Faerber to cancel the date: travel restrictions and health precautions are certainly not preparatory to a successful fair. Unlike what happened for Baselworld, however, the organizers have made it known that all 145 expected exhibitors will be reimbursed (companies that participate in a fair pay the cost of the exhibition space in advance). A decision that causes significant losses to the organizers but which, for sure, leaves a good impression on the companies that had to participate in GemGèneve. The only event related to jewelry, therefore, remains Voice VicenzaOro (12-14 September).

Homi come back in September

Many jewelery fairs have been suspended due to the health restrictions imposed by covid-19: Homi Fashion & Jewels, instead, will take place regularly. The fair (19-22 September) organized in Milan is dedicated to the segments of jewelery, fashion accessories, bijou and trendy jewelery, however, it will not forget the safety measures. “We have chosen to maintain the physical format by re-modulating it on the basis of new needs to give a signal of proactive and proactive continuity towards the future. All this without giving up digital but finding the right balance with the real dimension, because the relationship between people remains a crucial node of the business system and for this reason it needs to be even more valued ” assures Emanuele Guido, director of the event.

Security that will also pass from the increase in digital activities with Fiera Milano Platform, a platform dedicated to the whole community of reference chains, created in an integrated way that revolves around #befashionandjewels, a project created to create competitive strength that develops around a community system where all the actors are on the same level and which supports retail, buyers and top visitors. The idea is to cultivate relationships, sharing stories, through written and photographic content, thus emphasizing the character of each individual project. Here’s what Voice-Vicenzaoro will be like

The Voice was one of Frank Sinatra’s nicknames. Now, instead, in Italy the Voice is Michela Amenduni, Ieg’s product marketing & communication manager Jewelery & Fashion Division. That is, the woman on whom the burden and honor of making Voice known (Vicenza, 12-14 September), the cousin event of Vicenzaoro September, the fair that was canceled due to the well-known global health emergency. Although Italian Exhibition Group, the company that organizes Vicenzaoro, has tried to organize it until the last, this year it was impossible to re-propose the classic fair dedicated to jewelry, which weighs about 13% of the turnover of Ieg (a company that is listed on the Stock Exchange ). Here, then, is the idea of a different format, but no less interesting for this. “In fact, in the future he could also walk with his own legs,” the manager anticipates.

How the idea of Voice was born.
“We have collected requests from companies and sector associations, but also from many buyers, especially from Germany. During the lockdown, when only Italy had stopped, the perception from abroad was that everything was over, that businesses had disappeared. But no, Italian companies are alive and active. But it was not possible to propose Vicenzaoro with half the world blocked because of the virus. Too many question marks”.
voice
The format.
“The idea is Voice, an acronym for Vicenzaoro International Community Event, but it is also an evocative name: we give voice to the jewelry sector. A summit. The Basel and Hong Kong fairs have been canceled, Voice for businesses is the first occasion of the year, after VicenzaOro January. Three days full of opportunities for meetings, including moments of training in collaboration with universities, debates, followed in streaming on social media. But also business. With the help of the ICE there will also be buyers, in particular we are focused on those from the Schengen area “.

The staging.
“Impossible to recreate the same environment of Vicenzaoro. Participating companies will have booths of 15 square meters available, which can double and which, of course, are customizable. We will also try to recreate a color code that relates to the division into homogeneous areas of activity, as is the case for Vicenzaoro. And a lot of space available to comply with health security measures “.

Voice Talk
Voice Talk

Exhibitors and business.
“300 exhibitors have already confirmed their presence, but the number could go up again, perhaps up to 400. For them there is the Buyer Virtual Room project. How does it work? It is a platform (I-Mop Ieg Meeting Omnichannel Platform) that has already been tested in the Rimini tourism fair, and already used for GoldItaly in Arezzo. For the virtual meetings some rooms will be set up “.

Who is there, who is not there.
«To help exhibitors we are collaborating with Alo, a company that creates 3D videos: in the rooms dedicated to remote connections with foreign buyers you will have the opportunity to project videos of the jewels with a much better performance. This can be useful for brands that sell a lot abroad and who have not yet decided whether to participate in Voice.

The future.
«The Voice format could support Vicenzaoro in the future. But don’t replace it. For example, Voice could become an event that walks with its own legs, a hybrid format, more compact and versatile, which could also be exported to the world, from Shanghai to Panama. We’ll see”.

Baselworld in the hands of Murdoch jr.

Baselworld, the former queen of jewelery and watch fairs, could be saved by Murdoch jr. Lupa Systems, an investment company managed by James Murdoch, son of media tycoon Rupert Murdoch, has in fact offered about 100 million Swiss francs (equal to about 93 million euros or 106 million US dollars) to acquire a stake in Mch Group, the company that owns the Baselworld brand. According to rumors, it would be a purchase offer between 30% and 40% of company: the offer could save the Swiss company, which after the Baselworld debacle, canceled definitively, risks survival.

Indeed, the Bloomberg news agency predicts a decrease in Mch’s turnover of around 180 million by 2020, since Art Basel has also been canceled due to covid-19. Not all Mch members, however, agree to accept the proposal by Murdoch jr. The top of the fair company, on the other hand, seems in favor of accepting the entry of the Shark’s son (as his father Rupert was nicknamed on Wall Street). According to the Basel company summit, Murdoch jr. it could be the last train “before it’s too late”.

Cancelled International Jewelery London too

Another fair dedicated to jewelry has been canceled: Reed Exhibitions has announced that International Jewelery London, scheduled at Alexandra Palace from 13 to 15 September, will not be held due to the covid-19 pandemic. “Following UK government guidelines and comprehensive discussions with our customers, public health authorities and partner organisations, we do not believe that we are in a position to host a large scale gathering of the community in September without compromising the key valuable elements of IJL ”explains a note from the organizer. International Jewelery London has been held for 65 years.

The cancellation of International Jewelery London turns on the headlights on the last major international jewelery fair left on the program: Vicenzaoro, scheduled for September 5 to 9. A few days ago the organizing company, Italian Exhibition Group, confirmed Vicenzaoro together with a series of security measures to avoid contagions. But, of course, much will also depend on general health conditions, which now seem to have improved.

We did it in line with the health rules against covid-19 and the documents drawn up by Aefi, Federcongressi, Ufi and Emeca which I thank for the constant presence on the topic.

And on the subject of employees, the president of the Italian Exhibition Group, Lorenzo Cagnoni announces that the company has decided on mass serological screening, on a voluntary basis: “We adopt it to protect our collaborators, the employees of the subsidiaries and all our relational system. Operating in different regions, we will do it according to the protocols issued and in the process of being issued and a suitable application has already been submitted to the Emilia Romagna Region “.

All right initiatives. Of course, the climate of attention from red alert is necessary. But perhaps it will not reassure those who fear a contagion.

Baselworld canceled for 2021 too

The death sentence was written. And it was done. Mch Group, the company that organizes Baselworld, has canceled the date of the next event, scheduled from January 28 to February 2, 2021. The fair, scheduled for the end of April 2020, this year has jumped due to the coronavirus, but the death of that next year was decreed by the cost virus. And from the flight of the main watch brands, from Rolex to Patek Philippe, to the Lvmh group.

The problem of reimbursements the companies that had booked for the 2020 fair is resolved. The large groups would accept a refund of less than 85% proposed by Baselworld, thus favoring the refund to smaller companies. MCH Group and the Swiss Exhibitors Committee have indeed reached an agreement regarding this thorny aspect.

“I welcome the constructive attitude of the representatives of the MCH group, which has enabled us to find a balanced solution”, testifies Hubert J. du Plessix, president of the Swiss exhibitors’ committee and director of Rolex. “I would also like to thank Patek Philippe, Rolex, Tudor, Chanel, Chopard, Hublot, Zenith and Tag Heuer, who, in a spirit of solidarity with the sector as a whole, have agreed on a lower refund, so that other exhibitors can benefit from better conditions. ”

And then? Is the Baselworld story really over? Of course the last word has not yet been written. Mch Group is considering whether to think or, better, rethink Baselwolrd’s formula to propose it for 2022. It will not be easy, but it is said that it is not impossible. It will also depend on the trend of the world economy and on the success of the Watch & Wonders formula in Geneva, where the major watch brands have met for next year.

Together with the exhibitors and visitors, we are working intensively on clarifying and discussing the requirements and options for new platforms. We will be taking a decision on possible follow-up formats by the summer and will then provide information on the new concept and scheduling.

Oroarezzo still changes date: it will be at the end of July

Optimism is one of the basic elements for those who do business, but sometimes, as in the case of Oroarezzo, it turns out to be excessive. For this reason, the Italian Exhibition Group has decided to further move Oroarezzo 2020 to July, after on March 5 the fair was postponed to April 18 due to the coronavirus. A too optimistic date, in fact.

OroArezzo 2018

The new edition of Oroarezzo 2020, if all goes well, will be held from Saturday 18 to Tuesday 21 July. But Ieg says he is listening to the response to the companies in the sector, which have been stopped for weeks due to the health emergency. In short, we need to see how the jewelry manufacturers and, above all, the buyers will react, since there are few international flights at the moment. In fact, “aware that the current situation may not allow international buyers to reach Tuscany, Ieg is planning an edition of Oroarezzo omnichannel to maximize meeting opportunities in any case”.

Furthermore, the Italian Exhibition Group announces that “together with the international bodies and in constant harmony with associations and exhibitors, the countries of origin of the buyers will be carefully selected, evidently in light of the individual and different evolutions of the health status”.
The Business Meeting platform will also be activated, used for over ten years by Ieg with excellent customer satisfaction for the matching exhibitors-buyers. For this global networking tool, important integrations developed specifically for Oroarezzo 2020 are being finalized, which, for example, will allow meetings with buyers by videoconference on each individual stand.
