Timeless Angela Cummings

/

Angela Cummings, a designer who entered the Olympus of the great creators of the twentieth century ♦ ︎
Women Jewelery Designers is a book written by Juliet Weir-de La Rochefoucauld, which in 360 pages focuses on the work of major designers. Divided into three historical sections, the book begins with the introduction of female designers who were working between the First and Second World Wars. In the post-war period, until the eighties, one of the major designers on which the book focuses is Angela Cummings.

It is worth knowing. She was born in Klagenfurt, Austria, in 1944, but at the age of three she moved with her family to the United States. She studied art in Perugia, Italy, and in Hanau, Germany. She then married a former Tiffany gemologist, Bruce Cummings, in 1970. Her career as a designer coincided with the work of Tiffany & Co., from 1967. She designed the first complete jewelery collection under her own name in 1975. She became one of the innovative jewelry designers (together with Paloma Picasso, Jean Schlumberger and Elsa Peretti) associated with Tiffany. Then, in 1984, he set up his own brand, whit her name, in Bergdorf Goodman. A geometric necklace with emeralds and diamonds designed by Angela has been sold for 1.5 million dollars.

Angela Cummings was also famous for the type of processing with 18 carat gold, platinum and silver, with precious stones: often mixed these materials with unconventional combinations such as wood. He also experimented with classical techniques of creating jewels, such as the inlay of precious metals and iron, with a process known as “damascene”. Ginkgo leaves, spiderwebs, vines, shells, feathers, sea foam, dragonflies and orchids have been sources of inspiration. Giulia Netrese

The Jewelry by Andrew Geoghegan

/

The new jewels of the British designer Andrew Geoghegan, diamonds after the amethysts ♦ ︎

Andrew Geoghegan, British designer, launches the collection – Let’s Go … Diamond, which follows Let’s Go … Amethyst. And with this proposal he entered among the finalists in the bridal jewelery category in the competition that is held every year by the Professional Jeweler Magazine. It is not the first recognition: Geoghegan has already been named Designer of the Year 2014 of the British Jewelery Association and the Editor’s Choice at the International Jewelery London 2015.

Anello Let's Go ... Diamond
Anello Let’s Go … Diamond

The designer founded his Maison in 1998: he uses angular facets and soft curves, warm tones and metallic coldness. These contrasts, however, are harmonious, as in the series of cocktail rings called with chocolate box irony: in fact the gems look like chocolates inside a package. Thanks also to his past as a young sculptor, an experience that allows him to create jewels with a strong three-dimensional character.

Carla Abras, awards hunter

//

The modern and innovative design of Carla Abras, multiple award-winning Brazilian creator ♦

Brazil is a country that is rich in two important elements for jewelry: gems and designers. One of the most innovative is Carla Abras, who has a degree in Industrial Design and a post-graduate degree in Jewelry Design from Minas Gerais State University. In short, right in the area where most of the mining sites of the great South American country are located.

For her innovative ability she received numerous awards, including the Swarovski American Facet Award Signity in the United States in 2001 and the following year the World Facet Award Signity in Italy, the Sanshim Diamonds Award 2003 in Korea, the Tahitian Pearl Trophy Brazil 2005 and 2007, Auditions Brazil 2008 and 2010 by AngloGold Ashanti and IBGM Jewelry Design 2010. In 2012, he won the Auditions Award for AngloGold Ashanti, the largest gold jewelery design competition in the world. In the same year, she won the Ibgm Design Award in the Differiated Lappings category.

It is not necessary to continue: the Brazilian designer is admired all over the world and, to more pride, it must be added that her jewels are not only made with traditional and expensive materials, because for her the original idea prevails over the simple use of precious materials . At the same time, however, she can use gold and diamonds.

The rare jewels of Walid Akkad

//

Walid Akkad, from Lebanon to Paris for design jewelry with a Nordic taste ♦

Lebanon is a country blessed by nature and cursed by the civil war that for many years has upset the lives of its inhabitants. For this reason many have gone away in the past: many creative minds, like that of Walid Akkad, who moved to France. In Paris the designer studied jewelery, design, gemology, pearls. In short, everything you need to become a jewelry designer. But not just any one. His pieces are rare, very exclusive, with a modern and clean design, which would make one think of a Nordic rather than a Middle Eastern taste.

Walid Akkad realizes his jewels in the goldsmith laboratories of Paris, under his supervision. He loves the less known stones, the clean lines, the attention to detail. They are not jewels for everyone: one of the rare occasions when it goes outside are the editions of the Pad, an event reserved to art, antiques and a few selected jewels, in Paris but also in Montecarlo, Monaco or London. As happens, precisely, in the new edition of this exclusive fair.

Federica Rettore at Orticola

The Orticola collection by Federica Rettore, with a pair of earrings on the podium of the Couture Design Awards ♦

Orticola is the name of an exhibition-market organized in spring in the most central gardens of Milan. It is an appointment for lovers of flowers and gardening, but also a moment of social life for the upper class of the Lombard city. And Federica Rettore was born and works in Milan, even though she has been touring the world with her jewelry collections for a long time. What is link among gardening and the designer? Simple: his latest collection is called Orticola. An idea that must have inspired the jewelery maker a lot, since a pair of earrings from the Orticola collection ended up on the podium (second place) in the Best in Innovative category at the Couture Design Awards.

The beauty of the collection, however, is that it does not aim to reproduce the plants as if the jewels were small sculptures. Unlike other colleagues who copy leaves and flowers using gold and precious stones, Federica Rettore decided to create jewelry as if they were an alien botanic. Leaves, but with opals and gold veins that are not a simple photograph of nature, but an original interpretation. The idea appealed to Couture, in fact, and probably will be successful even among those who attend Orticola.

Suzanne Syz returns to Design Miami / Basel

Swiss jewelry designer Suzanne Syz collaborates with artist Kerstin Brätsch at Design Miami / Basel ♦ ︎

The Maison is called Suzanne Syz Art Jewels. The name itself indicates two interests: jewelry and art. Usually these two aspects are cultivated by Suzanne Syz with her work: creative, surprising jewels that overcome difficult technicals.

But sometimes the Geneva designer chooses to focus on the other aspect, art. Suzanne Syz, for example, will collaborate with the artist Kerstin Brätsch at Design Miami / Basel, from 11 to 16 June. It’s her fourth year at the fair and Suzanne invited Kerstin Brätsch to collaborate with the Syz Art Jewels stand, producing a wallpaper based on images of marbled rocks, with 3D renderings of overlapping dinosaurs, which symbolize an ancient extinct life in contrast to the new technology.

Brätsch has also designed six unique amorphous glass jewelry cases filled with volcanic stones. For Brätsch, the connections between these natural materials create a dialogue as old as the diamonds present at the beginning of mother earth. Those stones used for jewels survive until today, exhaling their telluric vibrations and their vibrant presence. Past Miami Design / Basel collaborations have included Sylvie Fleury, Alex Israel and John Armeleder.

William Ehrlich, architect of luxury

//

Architect, interior designer and keen collector (ceramics, art) of New York, William Ehrlich has now devoted himself to the design of jewelry ♦

Architect and jeweler: what you can expect from William Ehrlich? Simple: it is a designer when designing a jewel start from foundations and get to the roof. He conceives the jewellery as like crystal skyscrapers, with the expertise in the use of sophisticated software Cad. After he developed the work, the drawings cad are laser cut in silver sheets. The forms of metal are mounted with precious stones and diamonds by the artisans of his company, which has its name. “With silver sheets I can create large pieces, but they are not heavy,” said the designer, who is based in New York. Average price of its jewels: from to 75,000 dollars. It is not very easy to find them.

Ematite Zig Zag ring
Ematite Zig Zag ring

In love with the painting, he graduated from the prestigious University of Harvard, William founded his own studio and was thrown in the architectural profession. But he did not abandon his passion for precious forms. And so here it is a jewelry designer. Often they are made with many layers of nickel silver: is alloy with copper 50-60%, 15-30% zinc and 10-30% nickel. This metal is then plated with black rhodium: thus become colored dark gunmetal. There are no two pieces are exactly alike, there is a certain craftsmanship. And in this William it differs much from its origins designer of environments. Rudy Serra

A prize for the worst jewel

At Couture in Las Vegas comes the prize for the worst design of jewelery ♦ ︎

In the scientific world there is the Ig Nobel prize, a parody of the most authoritative Nobel prize: it is awarded to the worst studies or inventions. Then there is the Barbara Dex Award, an unofficial award that rewards the worst dressed artist at the Eurovision Song Contest. Now there is also the prize for the worst jewel. Paradoxically, to propose this strange competition, is the event known for bringing together the best of design: the Couture of Las Vegas.

Calcolatore d'oro degli anni Ottanta di Deakin and Francis
Calcolatore d’oro degli anni Ottanta di Deakin and Francis

The organizers have announced the WTF?! Award, a kind of celebration of the imperfection dedicated to jewelry projects that have turned out to be a disaster. According to Gannon Brousseau, director of Couture, “the idea of this competition came from the conversations that many of our veteran Couture designers had during the Tucson fashion shows. We liked the idea and we thought it was a great way to infuse some humor into our event, in addition to underlining how the creative process, even among established designers, can have its ups and downs “.

Ciondolo con opale di Jetter
Ciondolo con opale di Jetter

But will there really be a Maison that will expose itself to reveal creative failures? The organizers are confident and some project which turned out to be a bad idea has already been indicated by the National Jeweler website. For example, a gold calculator from the British twin manufacturer Deakin and Francis or a pendant with an opal by Jetter.

By the way, if you want to know the meaning of the abbreviation WTF, just consult the Urban Dictionary, which contains the meaning in full: What the fuck. Alessia Mongrando

Tomasz Donocik you can be found in London, but it is a case. In fact, he was born in Poland and raised in Austria. But it is in the British capital that completed his studies in Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martins, and then went on to attend and gain a Master of Arts at the renowned Royal College of Art. Both studies, however, he has paid off: he was also appointed Jeweler of the year in the UK.

Attracted by the architectural forms, but also a curious mix between unusual and valuable, as in the case of the pendant that has a shape that is inspired by Tinker Bell, the character of Peter Pan, Tomasz Donocik has managed to overcome many stereotypes. In short, he was able to innovate and, at the same time, not to create bizarre and not very wearable jewelry. He works exclusively in 18-carat gold, pink or white, using the best gemstones, each piece is handmade as craftswork, in his studio in London. Here are some of his works and the prices. Bia Tambelli, amazing Brazil

/

From Brazil a new trendy designer in the jewelry world: Bia Tambelli ♦ ︎
The clichés describe Brazil as the home of carnival, football and samba. Yet there is another aspect of Brazil that is less known, at least to the general public: jewelry design. The wide availability of colored stones, from emeralds to tourmalines, and the imagination of young jewelers in cities like San Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, have widened the proposal for innovations. An example is Bia Tambelli, 30, who joined the Design Room of VicenzaOro, the section of the fair reserved for the trendy authors. In short, she is a novelty, even if she is now a trendy signature in jewelry. It is no coincidence that she grew up in Minas Gerais, an area in Brazil where there are many stones mines (in particular the tourmaline), while she was formed as a designer in modern San Paulo, where she studied art. Her jewelery brand is recent. Indeed, very recent: in 2017 she founded high-end brands, Bia Tambelli Creations. In the notes that accompany her presentation, the objective of creating jewelry also unites uncommon conceptual goals: she wants, in fact, «to contribute to the spiritual growth of the individual through the energy and strength that the stones, inserted into architectures of lines and symbols full of meaning, radiate».
For the moment, jewels are made to order, waiting for a wider distribution. Prices, translated into euros: from around 1,400 for smaller pieces (such as Portal piercing) to around 40,000 euros for the most important pieces (such as the Arpia choker). Margherita Donato

VicenzaOro Design Room, who will go and who will not

/

Who is there, who is not there and who you must discovered among the 11 designers invited to VicenzaOro January in the Design Room ♦ ︎
Aida Bergsen, Akillis, Fernando Jorge, Bia Tambelli, Alissa jewelry, BebPop, Kellyxia Fine Jewelry, Magerit, Noor Jewelry, Netali Nissim, Qayten, Federica Rettore. There are 11 invited creators in the The Design Room district at the next VicenzaOro January 2018. The area reserved for small Maisons created by young, emerging designers and, possibly, with something more to say. Compared to last year, when this exhibition area was introduced, there are some confirmations, such as Federica Rettore, Netali Nissim, Magerit, Qayten and Fernando Jorge. The novelties, however, start with Aida Bergsen, which despite the Nordic name is based in Istanbul and is a designer-sculptor. Akillis is a Maison in Paris created by Caroline Gaspard, who describes herself as «une aventurière, audacieuse et determinée». Kellyxia, instead, is a Chinese company, based in Shanghai, also ignored by Google until now. Finally, Noor Jewelry is the brand by Noor Fares, a Lebanese designer who grew up in Paris and moved to London, already highly listed. In short, the Design Room includes well-established brands such as Fernando Jorge, Magerit, Qayten or Federica Rettore along with names that are literally to be discovered. Perhaps to increase curiosity. Lavinia Andorno

Alexandra Mor among the top designers

/

Alexandra Mor in the Olympus of the best designers of the century. And with a noble mission: to save the elephants from poaching ♦ ︎
How many good designers would be willing to make some sacrifices to entering among the «Women Jewelery Designers», a prestigious volume written by the gemologist and writer Juliet Weir-de la Rochefoucauld? Alexandra Mor succeeded, and without effort.
Read also: Inimitable Alexandra Mor
The volume, published by Acc Publishing in London, explores the influence and work of jewelry designers all over the world during the last century up until today. As for the style of Alexandra Mor, Juliet Weir-de La Rochefoucauld writes: “Mor’s jewels are young and of the moment. They are intensely personal. They carry into the twenty-first century the American ideal of jewels that can be transformed for different occasions. Simple earrings can be added to in order to create elaborate chandelier earrings, mixing and matching a variety of gemstone drops – an idea that has traveled across the Atlantic Ocean from 18th- and 19th-century Europe. Her jewelry is about graceful simplicity and elegant lines that dwell on the mind, softly demanding admiration – classics ready to perpetuate memories for the next generation”. In short, a very gratifying comment for the American designer, who in 2016 moved to Bali. She is not only able to create unique high quality pieces, with extraordinary stones and refined and original compositions, but Alexandra Mor is also able to innovate and amaze, as when she combines precious stones with tagua seeds. That is an exotic wood that is also called vegetable ivory. It is a material obtained from the seeds of a palm, the Phytelephas macrocarpa, which grows in the rainforest of South America. The fruit, once dried, has consistency, color and appearance very similar to ivory and can be easily worked and dyed. The designer uses it in combination with pearls or quartz: the effect is truly surprising. And it is not just a stylistic choice: the designer has opted for tagua seeds to avoid contributing to the killing of elephants. Maybe you do not know, but one is shot down every 15 minutes by poachers hunting for fangs. Alessia Mongrando

Suzanne Syz, gift as earrings shape

/

The earrings that look like flakes for Suzanne Syz’s gift packs ♦ ︎
Who is really creative is also witty. In short, it’s someone occasionally deals with life lightly. Let’s say, in the jewelery world most companies are terribly serious. If this also means a lack of creativity, decide it for you. Who, for sure, is good, creative and even witty is Suzanne Syz, a Geneva-based designer who has enthusiasts around the world. In view of Christmas, Suzanne Syz instead of proposing rings in the form of snow shaped crystals or yellow stars, has decided to turn their customers into gift packs. The Wrap It Up earrings have the shape of those flakes that add to the gift packs along with the golden paper and the ribbons that complete the pack. The eight pairs of earrings are limited in size and made in aluminum with different colors. Each pair of earrings also has 90 white diamonds for a total of 0.83 carats. Alessia Mongrando

Poem to lightness with Mini Rosa

Mini Rosa, the jewelery made in Milan for the sake of lightness ♦

Jewelry for smiles, designed for girls who are tough and unstoppable as their creator. Because Mini Rosa, the small stylized figure featuring the same brand drawn by Rosa Batosti Rossignol, is the alter ego of a super-mother with four children, who for 20 years has been the manager of human resources in large companies and has received the honorary title of lieutenant of the French Army, for deserved in her work. Parisian adoption, but Italian in the spirit has moved the culture of his country of origin and his passion for calligraphy in three jewelery lines: the first takes its name from the poet Dante and is in ebony, gold and diamonds, The second one celebrates Petrarch with mother-of-pearl, gold and diamonds, while the third literally reproduces Latin pronouns and verses on precious metals. So, next to the collier from my bases to a thousand, that is to give me a thousand kisses, from the most famous poem of Catullo, 9 carat pink gold and brown diamonds, there is the silver bracelet Amor vince omnia. And again, the necklace with the word quid pluris, where that extra something is the pink sapphire pendant. Or perhaps irony, a fundamental counterweight to the difficulties of life. With this certainty, Rosa Rossignol has created another collection with lightness: in the Mia bracelets, rings and earrings have the slight shape of a butterfly. All unique pieces created in a goldsmith workshop in Milan.

Rarefied Etho Maria

The latest creations of Etho Maria, refined jewelery for very few ♦ ︎
The jewelery brand Etho Maria has a little known history. It was born by a Greek company in 2008, called EthO Lithos, and which is still today defined as the production tank of the new brand. The founder and designer is called Takis Etho. Maison is based in Athens, but also based in Miami, and has recently opened an office in Milan. Etho Maria participates in the relevant fairs, from Baselworld at Couture in Las Vegas, but without much communication: it points to a sophisticated audience, attracted by high jewelery, or jewelery for a few.
However, the production of the collections is partly made in Thailand, where the company manages a production site: for truth it is a common road to many other well-established Maison (but they do not like that you to know it). The brand is presented as a jewelery manufacturer, innovative, modern, precious. Jewelry often has irregular, complicated weaves, many colored diamonds, with a non-avant garde, but trendy style. Here are some examples. Giulia Netrese

Silvia Furmanovich in India

The new collection of brazilian designer Silvia Furmanovich is dedicated to India ♦ ︎
There are those who fall in love with their children (everyone), others who falls in love with a man or woman (almost everybody), and others again who falls in love with the cat (good part). Others, like Silvia Furmanovich, a Brazilian designer with a Slavic name, also fall in love with the countries. She fell in love with Egypt, Japan, and Italy. And, now, she is in love with India. To all these countries she has dedicated a collection of jewels. The great and populous Asian subcontinent, with that blend of spirituality and folklore, in fact, is loved from many people. And it looks perfect for creative design by Silvia Furmanovich, who likes to mix elements, techniques, and traditions. In the India collection, for example, forms that derive from the ancient artisan skill in decoration, engravings and decorations, miniatures and icons, are revised with the designer’s eyes. It is what she herself describes as “a delicate balance between tradition and innovation.” Unique pieces, craftsmanship, and sometimes surprising materials: even for brooches and bracelets, necklaces and rings from the new collection, the method by the creative designer is respected.
A good initiative, in short, to celebrate the first 20 years of activity: Silvia Furmanovich opened its own atelier in 1997. But her journey through the world will continue to long. Margherita Donato
