Vittorio Fiorentino, coral forever

/

From Torre del Greco, capital of coral near Naples, in Viareggio, Tuscany: the Vittorio Fiorentino story intersects with that of craftsmen of the gold red, that turnes into jewelry and sculptures. For four generations the Fiorentino business is to coral and jewelry. Their latest production of earrings, necklaces and bracelets testifies that the tradition is still alive. The style is more easy than once and is more consistent with the modern taste: the shapes are linear, soft, geometric.

The coral is now from Pacific (in the Mediterranean has almost disappeared) and is paired with diamonds, all in a set of white gold. In short, even the coral is adapting to the times, but without losing the charm of material that has its roots in the marine nature. Giulia Netrese

Ciaravolo, not just red

Coral, more the precious stones, and more gold: here are the Ciaravolo jewels, Neapolitan jewelry from three generations ♦

Sometimes it is good to leave the big Maison that are on the stage, pushed by the media, to get to know the small but exceptional, goldsmiths who are around Italy. Some of these craft skills are, you know, near Torre del Greco, just steps from Naples. Here from generations are passed down the art of making corals, which over time has evolved to become a top quality jewelry. In short, those few business operator calls with disdain “corallari”, are often of the virtuosos of the chisel and setting, real artists of that precious gift from the sea. This is also the story of Ciaravolo, which has lasted three generations. Started by master engraver of statues and cameos by Vincenzo, it was continued by his son Giuseppe. From simple engraver, Pino Ciaravolo 50 years ago has started to produce jewelry. Today at the helm is Vincenzo, who has earned a reputation that goes beyond national boundaries.

Ciaravolo has found a place in the nearby Centro Goldsmith Tarì Marcianise (Caserta), where at the coral work, it has added that of gold and precious stones. Large chains with pavé diamonds, elaborate earrings that combine the coral stones, sumptuous rings, testify to the long road traveled by that from a small workshop has become a goldsmith really high level. The 100 years of Coscia

Coscia turns 100 and celebrates the milestone in VicenzaOro ♦ ︎

A century to celebrate. In 2019 Coscia celebrates its 100th anniversary and the Torre del Greco company has decided to celebrate the event at VicenzaOro September with a special event (which includes an exhibition of the company’s iconic pieces), Sunday 8 September. There are not many jewelry houses that can boast a similar longevity, obtained thanks to the entrepreneurial ability and creativity of the family that has been interpreting the jewel for three generations. Pearls, cameos and corals are the distinctive elements of the Coscia brand, founded in 1919 by the progenitor Vincenzo, in Torre del Greco, the city that is still today a center for the processing of coral and cameo.

In the 1980s, thanks to Giancarlo Coscia, Vincenzo’s nephew and current patron, the company extended its offer to cultivated pearls, another trademark of the Maison. For this reason, after the transfer of the company to the Il Tarì goldsmith center, Coscia’s «O» was replaced by the image of a pearl in the company logo. The company’s success has given reason to this choice.

New spheres for Alex Ball

//

The new spheres of Alex Ball, the jewelery brand that focuses on roundness ♦ ︎

A jeweler who does not want to make simple jewels: an object that is too usual, according to Alessandro Pallavidini. In 2003 the entrepreneur, owner of the historic company of Valenza Guerci Pallavidini, with 60 years of activity in the production of high-end frames, gave life to Alex Ball, a transposition in English of his Italian name.

Anelli in corallo rosa e turchese, con tsavoriti e spinelli
Anelli in corallo rosa e turchese, con tsavoriti e spinelli

Over the years it has kept faith with the philosophy of the brand: its non-jewels are mostly played on the shape of the sphere, an eternal form and at the center of many works of art (Giovanni Pallavidini, father of the founder Dario, was a well-known painter .). But the ball is not the only geometric shape used. For example, the Colors of Iceland collection has as its theme the explosion and includes 18k gold rings, diamonds, pink and tzavorite coral or turquoise and spinels, which do not have the classic sphere in the center, even if the overall volume is rather rounded .

Last February, Alex Ball opened a new boutique in Milan, in addition to those in Courmayeur, Forte Village, Ischia, Chia Laguna, as well as in Valenza.

A certificate for the coral by Igi

Coral reefs at risk, coral quality: Igi, the Italian Gemological Institute, has developed a scientific method for classification ♦ ︎

Diamonds have long been the lens: to ascertain their origin, as well as their quality, different methods have been introduced, starting from the Kimberley Process. But the need to know what is actually purchased, starting from the origin and characteristics, does not only concern diamonds. Coral, for example, is a “famous unknown” to most people who buy the precious fruit of the sea.

Chantecler, anello in oro con corallo rosso e diamanti

But in reality, it is possible to obtain a true coral identikit. And it will be the Igi, the Italian Gemological Institute, chaired by Raffaele Maino and directed by Loredana Prosperi, the first laboratory able to provide the certainty of the origin of the coral. Not only: the IGI also offers the possibility of certifying its origin through a sophisticated fingerprinting tool. In short, not just a visual expertise, but a scientific proof.

Cartier, orecchino in oro e corallo

The goal was achieved in synergy with Cibjo, an organization that defines itself as the United Nations of the jewelery business, that is, the world confederation of jewelery, and the coral commission, chaired by Vincenzo Liverino. The scientific part was curated with the support of the University Federico II of Naples, an active part through its Department of Marine Biology, headed by Professor Anna Di Cosmo, by the same Igi and by the Danat, the Institute of Gems and pearls of Barhein (an authority on industrial standards), led by Ken Scarratt.

In addition to certifying the quality of the coral, the process will also serve to protect the raw material, which is a living organism and endangered risk species (such as coral reefs). The results already achieved include the adoption in 2015 of the Coral Blue Book, later completed in 2017 and the drafting of the Coral Guide for Customs manual – Classification & Identification of Coral Materials, designed to provide customs authorities and competent agencies with correct elements evaluation and classification of quality gem corals. In this way it is possible to identify in a certain way the origin of the material, decisive for intervening on the protection of species and protected areas, and to introduce,

Spilla di Bulgari con gemme e corallo

Until now the identification was based on the physical properties of the material, morphological observation with the use of infrared and Raman spectroscopes. But in some cases this is not enough and more information is needed. Here comes the identification of the genetic code, present in all living organisms, the most reliable method for the determination of species, which now offers the possibility of certifying the coral species without a doubt, using appropriate markers.

The new Enchanté by Chantecler

//

The Enchanté collection by Chantecler expands: here are the jewels inspired by a street in Capri ♦ ︎

Every year the nostalgia of the sea, of the white Mediterranean houses, of the scents that only summer can bring, is accompanied by the rediscovery of a now classic collection by Chantecler, Enchanté. The Maison born in Capri years ago proposed an original series of jewels that are inspired by the irregular shape of the small stones used to pave a small road carved into the rock of the small island, which connects the Marina Piccola harbor. Stones that have a variable perimeter, but that manage to fit together next to each other, in an essential mosaic.

The name of the Enchanté collection probably derives from the enchantment that visitors who travel the road of Capri experience. The collection renews itself over the years, but it always remains anchored to its original design: domed rings, wide-band sculpture-rings, earrings, chokers, bracelets, all with a pavé decoration of white diamonds interrupted here and there by insertions of stones like turquoise, red and pink coral, kogolong, onyx. Here are the new pieces from the collection. Giulia Netrese

The music of Cartier Clash

//

The Clash collection by Cartier, the new rings, bracelet, necklace and earrings of the Maison. Images and prices of ring, bracelet, earrings by Cartier ♦ ︎

The Clash were an English punk rock band active from 1976 to 1986. But the word clash in the English language is also synonymous with combat. In short, the word evokes a rough, angular, and not very accommodating concept. Translated into the world of jewelry, Clash now identifies with the new Cartier collection. Which, to be precise, is a bit sharp and is reminiscent in style of bracelets and ornaments used by heavy metal and punk fans.
But the collection, presented with great pomp in Paris, and without The Clash music, does not aim to cover the centimeters of skin of rock music fans. On the contrary, with a soundtrack that includes Brian Eno, Ryuchi Sakamoto or Earthater, he wants to be destined for a refined woman.

The collection includes 14 pieces, all in rose gold, some with small diamonds set, and three with the addition of coral. The prices are those of Cartier’s fine jewelry: it starts from about 2000 euros for the smallest ring in only rose gold, to 7300 euros for a pair of hoop earrings, up to 51,000 euros for the large bracelet with pearls of red coral. The Mediterranean diet of Rajola

A historic company specialized in the processing of coral: it is Rajola, active since 1926. Here are its proposals ♦

Before it was trendy the Mediterranean diet, the world had loved the Mediterranean passion. One way to interpret the feelings that is characteristic of the solar areas of Italy: as Torre del Greco. The town near Naples is the birthplace of coral works, but also a melting pot of passions. Just look at the Rajola jewels to realize this: the company was founded in 1926 and now in its fourth generation, expresses not only an increasingly ability to build valuable pieces of handcrafted jewelery, but also to add to the aesthetics of the jewel emotions typical of that land Mediterranean.

The images on this page are consistent with this philosophy: women fiery, passionate, colorful, wearing pearls, stones and corals with an enthusiasm that you can hardly find in the North. But do not think of a brand that recalls the clichés about Italy: in fact the company is keeping up with the times and moves. As demonstrated by the recent launch of two new brands: Like you, thought for jewels that unite, and Rajola Basic, classical and essential. Lavinia Andorno

Coral jewelry for 2019

/

Pantone chosed the coral color. Here are the jewels with the Living Coral, color of the year 2019 ♦ ︎

Pantone, as every year, has established the color of the year. For 2019 it has the anonymous Pantone abbreviation 16-1546 but, to make the choice a little less anonymous, the company specialized in nuances calls the color as Living Coral.

In short, it is expected that jewels with pink-orange coral will be sought during the year.

Wendy Yue, bracciale con corallo, diamanti, zaffiri, oro
Wendy Yue, bracciale con corallo, diamanti, zaffiri, oro

Although, to be honest, examples of jewels that use coral and this warm color are certainly not lacking, like that of Wendy Yue, in which the coral is carved in the shape of a rose, along with 18-karat gold, multicolour sapphires, diamonds, emeralds and rubies (if you are interested, it costs $ 95,000). But, of course, the pink-orange coral has long been used by jewelers, especially those who work in and around Naples, or in Sicily. Jewelers such as Castaldi, Chantecler, De Simone, Oro di Sciacca, Rovian, to name a few, are among the heirs of this tradition. But the coral is also used by Maison who all focus on innovative design, such as Salini and Vhenier.
In short, 2019 will see a coral revival. But be careful to clean and polish the coral: the things you need know are here. Freddy Graglia

Chantecler gets engaged with Antonio Riva

Chantecler decorates a dress by Antonio Riva with red and orange coral ♦ ︎

For once we give a news that concerns the jewels in half. Because the other half is about clothing. But it is really unusual news. This is a dress decorated with coral by the Maison Chantecler. The creation, in fact, was born in the Chantecler boutique in Via Vittorio Emanuele, in Capri, where it is exhibited. The signature of the dress is that of Antonio Riva, while the decoration with the coral is the result of the creativity of Chantecler. The dress also has a name: GLAmour.
Antonio Riva is a designer specializing in wedding dresses and Chantecler is the island’s most famous jeweler, with an image linked to the international jet set. On the dress, the orange and red corals are embroidered on the chiffon. It is a long model in white silk cady with a boat neckline at the front and enriched on the back by a porthole completely decorated by the coral branches of Chantecler characterized by natural shapes. Looking for perfection with Morellato

//

The Perfetta collection by Morellato, perfect for spring and summer. Images and price ♦ ︎
Since it is Perfetta, Morellato’s spring-summer collection could soon be imitated by many. Who knows. The jewels from the affordable price of the Venetian company have white mother-of-pearl mounted on circles of different sizes in 925 silver. The Perfetta collection consists of pendants, earrings, necklaces, rings and cuff bracelets. The earrings are both in the lobe version finished with zircons, and in the double-round version. There are two proposals for necklaces: a pendant with a chain over long combined and the one with a smaller pendant, with zircons. Both chains are adjustable sliding to define the length quickly. Prices: necklace with mother of pearl 79 euros, bracelet 79 euros, earrings 69 euros, ring 49 euros. In addition to the mother of pearl in the collection are also used coral and turquoise, that is red orange and deep blue: colors usually preferred or, better, perfect for the summer. Just as the collection seems to indicate. Lavinia Andorno

A coral for Caterina Murino

Jewelery by Caterina Murino, from James Bond to Paris showcases ♦
There is a new jewelery designer. And she miraculously escaped from Spectre, the criminal organization enemy of James Bond. In fact, Caterina Murino, an Italian actress, Sardinian for precision, was the bond girl in 007 Casinò Royale, movie played with Daniel Craig. Since 2004, she lives in Paris. And, aside the art of acting, she rediscovered his passion: jewels. Her collection is called Gemme Bruti and Filigrana, and is exhibited at the Vanier Gallery in Paris from November 24 to December 30. And to say that before he was a successful actress she wanted to do the doctor.
“I am Sardinian, who knows Sardinia knows that it is impossible not to love jewels,” she explained. “I enrolled in a Gemmology school in Paris, where I live. I’ve always been fascinated by the reason why men have come to kill to steal stones from enormous power. Then I realized that each stone has energy from infinite vibrations, it passes through many hands, is extracted, worked, commercialized. My favorite precious stone is definitely the starry sapphire: it was love at first sight after I discovered it in a mine in Sri Lanka. ” In addition to the stones, however, Caterina Murino also have a passion for coral, which reminds her of her land of origin: many of her jewels use the red fruit of the sea. Chantecler more Enchanté

In Las Vegas, Chantecler also brings the renewed Enchanté collection ♦
In the year of her 70th birthday, Chantecler was sailed from Capri to land in Las Vegas, although there are not sea over there. One news are the red coral earrings and diamond paved on pink gold enriching the already thick Enchanté collection . The collection is inspired by a romantic rock-dug road linking the old town center with Marina Piccola, in Capri. The path is paved with irregular stones and goes down to a blue seas and is unforgettable.
Those variable-shaped stones have become elements that make up a series of jewels in the Maison, which have as a common element a pavé of white diamonds interrupted by placement of hard stones or coral. A tribute to the island of the Mediterranean that saw the birth of the brand, but also to the enchantment that is felt, more generally, facing the sea and the sun. The colors used in the collection are very strong: from red coral, to turquoise, to black onyx, to the kogolong, a white volcanic stone, glossy like ceramic but durable like marble. After all, the Vesuvius volcano is not far away. Giulia Netrese

Bliss into the ocean

Bijoux for the summer signed by Bliss: pearls white, blue and red dedicated to the island of Tenerife ♦
Bijoux for summer, colored bijoux, bijoux to wear without thinking twice. Bliss (brand of the Damiani group) proposes a collection of jewelery coordinated with the climate and mood of the hot season. Not surprisingly, the line of jewels is dedicated to an island where the sea and the strong colors are predominant: Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, in the full Atlantic Ocean. The island is known for its horizons, the moonlit, harsh landscape. And Bliss’s collection takes on intense shades: beads red of coral pasta, turquoise, and cultured pearls combined together. Necklaces, bracelets and contrarié rings are made with details in 18-karat gold in pink or white shades. Prices range from 89 to 249 euros. M.d.B.

De Simone, coral and over

The coral specialists De Simone propose a new collection that is the sum of their goldsmith skills: Krim.
They are defined coral specialists, but the definition is narrow. Certainly the brand De Simone also means coral. But the Neapolitan Maison boasts a production of jewelry that embraces the entire goldsmith skills, able to mix the classic ingredients of the jewelry menu: gold and precious stones. In VicenzaOro De Simone presented a new line of jewelry, Krim. Necklaces, earrings and rings using, of course, the coral, but with a game of nuances and contrasts with the precious stones: emeralds, colored sapphires, agates and diamonds, are used for compositions able to keep balance between bright and pastel colors. It’s no surprise. De Simone is a company with a tradition of over a century and a half, was born in Torre del Greco (Naples) in 1855. And in the time has established itself as one of the Maison more class in jewelry manufacturing with corals, pearls , cameos, semi-precious stones, gold and platinum. It has also long been an international standing: in 1910 opened an office in New York, in 1920 in London, although it has kept the base in Torre delGreco. Alessia Mongrando

Autumn with coral

Oro di Sciacca, Sicily jewelery specialized in coral, feeds his catalog with the pieces for fall-winter 2015-2016. After being at the JA New York, the brand presents Barilotti: a line that plays the Sicilian tradition, that consists of necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Red color, on the other hand, fits in well with the nuances of autumn leaves and, more generally, with shades of winter. On the necklace, for example, the coral is also worked in faceted beads, in increasing size, ordered in three rows and closed with a clasp that has the shape of a small bouquet. The bracelet, composed of seven strands of coral beads, is interrupted by two clips and a closing, made with gold. G.N.

If the coral is a Myto

It’s not news that the Italian jewelers, especially the Naples area, are masters in the art of coral. It is, however, a novelty the collection of Myto by De Simone, presented in VicenzaOro September. This is an expansion of the Icon collection, presented in January 2015. The initial inspiration, tell the company, is born from the great actresses icons of Made in Italy: Sophia Loren, Anna Magnani, Silvana Mangano. That is, style, elegance, retro nostalgia for the fifties. And we must add that in those years the coral was a absolute must. Hour is back into fashion, and in this collection is combined with pearls and turquoise, with diamonds and precious stones. In short, what makes a gem valuable evidence of craftsmanship, as well as an object of value. Here are a couple of images of the collection Myto, along with those of the collection Icon. Coral as flowers for summer

What’s more summery of coral? Perfect on tan and almost essential for evenings by the sea. Among the specialists of coral, the brand Sicilian Oro di Sciacca proposes the collection Flowers of water, combining the red element of the sea with the Australian pearls. The collection is an ongoing, that is revived every year. Now, however, it is updated with the use and the combination of pale pearls with the vivid colors of Southern Mediterranean, in a unique combination of nacre produced from the distant ocean, with colors of red, pink and salmon, used for earrings and necklaces.

Stephen Webster gold addicted

Stephen Webster is undeniably struck by gold since he has been designing jewellery for nearly 40 years, but that is not the only reason why he has named Gold Struck his new collection. He has been impressed by the discovery itself of the Cheapside Hoard, the world’s largest collection of Elizabethan and Jacobean jewellery ever found. What struck the British designer is not so much the 500 pieces of exceptional value, but the fact they was unearthed in 1912 by the pickaxes of workmen demolishing an old jeweller’s premises on Cheapside in the City of London. Kind of like discovery of oil gushing from the ground, these jewels have jumped out of a treasure box. In Webster collection dominate amethyst, topaz, tanzanites, rubies, fire opals and sapphires, the same stones of the hidden treasure. But these are set in diamonds, triangles, rectangles, rounds, in short, multi-shaped and sized that orbit harmoniously around a hexagonal, faceted irregularly center stone as if just dug up. The color combinations for ear climbers, two-finger or opened rings, traditional pendants or bracelets, are like Webster’s edgy aesthetics, that is whimsical and robust: the red version with corals, fire opals, diamonds and orange sapphires, the purple one with amethysts, rubies and rhodolite, and the blue one with turquoises, amethysts, blue topaz and tanzanite. Matilde de Bounvilles
