x

The great auctions of great jewels for great bank accounts are back. On April 20, Sotheby’s Hong Kong presents its Magnificent Jewels which includes brightly colored diamonds and precious stones. The highest-valued piece is a 7-carat deep purplish pink fancy diamond ring, estimated at $ 5.8 to $ 7.1 million. But a bracelet with 63.66-carat diamonds and rock crystal by Cartier will certainly attract attention. It is in Art Deco style and is part of the L’Odyssée de Cartier – Parcours d’un Style collection: the estimate is between 5.1 million and 8.4 million dollars. The Parisian Maison also presents an exclusive 23.48 carat dark pinkish orange fancy diamond ring. Or a jewelery set with white diamonds and Colombian emeralds.

Tennis bracelet, who started the game?

/

Tennis bracelets are one of the most successful jewels: they are elegant and easy to wear. But do you know why they are called tennis bracelets? Their name comes from … ♦ ︎

Things to know: from time to time tennis bracelets appear in the collections. It is a type of bracelet that is usually made of gold and a row of diamonds, sometimes with other precious stones as well. The line of stones of the tennis bracelet is continuous even if, over time, other versions have also been proposed. But why is it called a tennis bracelet? Is it a piece of jewelry you need to play with rackets and balls? Who decided to call them that? What does Grand Slam sport have to do with it? Here is the answer: the tennis-like bracelet has a rather recent history. That is, it does not belong to those great traditions of jewelery, codified starting from the nineteenth century, but it established itself relatively recently. The tennis bracelet, in fact, was born in 1987, thanks to a tennis player.

Bracciale tennis di Morellato
Bracciale tennis di Morellato

The line of diamonds that has no beginning or end was actually associated with the desire for eternal love. In fact, originally, its name was just eternity bracelet, in analogy with the same type of ring. What does tennis have to do with it, then? Simple, this bracelet became famous because it was always worn by one of the best (some say even the best) tennis player, the American Chris Evert. To give an idea, Chris Evert remained consistently at the top of world tennis in the 1970s and 1980s, and was number one in the official rankings for seven years. Well, she loved eternity bracelets, which she often wore even during games. Indeed, we remember a funny episode: during a US Open match Chris lost a diamond bracelet signed Coronet. The game was then suspended to recover the precious jewel. Since that time the diamond bracelet has been called a tennis bracelet. In short, tennis has replaced eternity with a hit of the racket.

[Sur] naturel, a super collection of Cartier high jewelery

//

Does super natural also mean supernatural? The new collection of high jewelery by Cartier allows an ambiguous interpretation. In fact, the collection is called [Sur] naturel, a French word that can be read in two different ways. Even if, in fact, the theme of jewels refers more to an exuberant nature than to an ultra-sensorial world.

Flora and fauna are the reference points of the Parisian luxury brand. Flowers, but also natural elements such as water, are represented through a series of jewels, unique pieces, which focus entirely on the combination of exclusive design and strong impact stones: diamonds, emeralds and sapphires, but also opal, kunzite, coral, aquamarine, beryl and quartz. There are pieces that are more extraordinary than others, such as the Tillandsia white gold necklace, which features two oval-shaped green beryls totaling 163.97 carats, a 0.55-carat pear-shaped yellow diamond and a diamond 0.53-carat pear-shaped brown-orange, in addition to rutilated quartz, other pear-shaped brown diamonds, other rose-cut yellow diamonds and, finally, a pavé of brilliant-cut white diamonds covering the shaped links of cone along the neckline.

The Tillandsia necklace would be enough to make the collection super. Which, instead, includes many other highlights. Like the Hemis platinum necklace, with a 71.08 carat cushion cut kunzite in the center, surrounded by opals, white and pink brilliant cut diamonds, or the Sinopé white gold necklace, with five Madagascar oval sapphires for a total of 39.22 carats. Finally, but only to mention some highly effective pieces, the Gharial necklace, embellished with 20 Zambian emeralds with the unusual octagonal shape, for a total of 15.44 carats. Four of the emeralds in asymmetrical pairs are suspended by two tapered diamonds for a total of 4.13 carats. And square-shaped, brilliant-cut diamonds are used throughout the platinum necklace.

Luxury jewelry? Vivrelle lends them to you

Would you like to show off a Bulgari jewel, but you don’t have enough money to buy it? Or maybe you prefer Van Cleef & Arpels? Or, again, by Cartier? In the United States they found the solution: it’s called Vivrelle. The idea is of Wayne and Blake Geffen and it is very simple: a club that offers those who sign up the opportunity to wear luxury brands. For now, the service is reserved for the US, but the founders plan to extend it to other countries. By the way: in addition to jewelry, Vivrelle also offers bags, clothes and other designer products. The idea was liked, also because it allows you to easily change wardrobes and jewelry.

It works like this: club membership costs a minimum of $ 99 a month, or 199 or 279. In the first case (Classique), you can borrow one item per month with an estimated retail value of less than $ 4,000. With the second option (Couture) you can borrow one item per month worth more than $ 4,000, including rare, unique and limited edition pieces. The third possibility increases the loan to two objects at a time: one piece from the Classique wardrobe and one object from the Couture wardrobe.

One of the most successful aspects is that borrowed clothes or jewelry can be kept for as long as desired. Shipping costs are included in the subscription. It would be easy to say that in the world of jewelry someone wich add a link with that of watchmaking: Anna Maccieri Rossi take care of filling the gap. Her jewels, which debuted in VicenzaOro January in 2019, in fact, have a special link with the theme of time. Sotheby’s record for Tutti i Frutti by Cartier, here’s the story

/

Sotheby’s sold the Tutti Frutti bracelet by Cartier for $ 1.34 million. And so it is also an opportunity to tell the story of the Tutti Frutti jewels.

The auction took place online. Created around 1930, the jewel had never appeared at auction before, but has been passed down among the descendants of an American family for more than 30 years. The auction saw five bidders on the field. The Art Deco jewel far exceeded its estimate of $ 600-800,000, and became the highest-priced piece sold in an online auction, as well as the top record for any jewel sold at auction in 2020.

Il bracciale Tutti i Frutti di Cartier aperto

The result achieved for this bracelet is testament to the fact that, even under the most challenging of circumstances, the demand for great art endures. Tutti Frutti jewels have always held a special allure for collectors, capturing the West’s fascination with the ‘exotic’ at a time when travel was relatively limited, much as it is today. Now, of course, we can connect with the touch of a button, which allowed us to engage with bidders worldwide. We look forward to bringing more great jewels to the marketplace in the months ahead as we expand our calendar of online sales.

Sotheby’s online jewelry auctions raised 7.4 million through the end of April 2020, with 93% of all lots sold. These sales, explains the auction house, regularly attract participants from over 30 countries and with 30% of all bidders making transactions with Sotheby’s for the first time. This is a trend observed in all global jewelry auctions in 2019 (both live and online), in which over half of all jewelry buyers have made their offers online.

The history of the Cartier bracelet
Celebrated as the holy grail of jewelry, the design of jewels Cartier’s Tutti Frutti are joyful celebrations of consistency, shape and color, which today are sought after as icons of the Art Deco era. The skillful arrangement of carved colored stones and diamonds, together with the precise application of black enamel, uniquely illustrate the marriage between oriental and western influences on the design of Art Deco jewels.
Dettaglio del bracciale
Dettaglio del bracciale

Cartier has produced Tutti i Frutti jewels (Italian definition to indicate fruits of different types, but also a mix of different colors) in a variety of shapes, in particular with bracelets, the most requested. All the jewels share the design with the colored stones cut with the Indian Mughal style, but each piece is unique. The Cartier bracelet sold at auction stands out, for example, for the liveliness of its precious stones, dominated by rubies, and by the black enamel lines, applied on one side only, in an echo of the organic asymmetry of the carved gems . The bracelet returns to a more traditional Art Deco aesthetic with its diamond-set clasp, highlighted by onyx triangles and chevron-shaped clasps.

Pierre Cartier’s first foray into the Tutti Frutti style in 1901 was a necklace for Queen Alexandra who, as wife of King Edward VII and by extension of the Empress consort of India, commissioned a piece to complete three Indian-style dresses. The master jeweler’s necklace managed to blend the sumptuous curves and dazzling colors associated with the perceived exoticism of India with the modern craftsmanship techniques perfected at the Cartier House. The necklace opened the doors to future royal commissions and became the basis for the most famous jewels of the oriental-inspired company. However, this happened after 1911, when Pierre Cartier’s brother Jacques ventured to India.

Observing the exotic culture and traditions of India, Jacques’ commercial expedition soon developed into an educational path that would influence the way his family business would design jewelry for years to come. He returned to his London laboratory full of inspiration, incorporating the bright colors and rich textures of carved Mughal precious stones and diamonds made in Cartier. After being shown at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925, the Tutti Frutti jewels quickly gained popularity among the most fashionable and demanding collectors of the day. And still today they are sought after by collectors.

These pieces of high jewelery, in fact, revolve around a special gem: the imperial topaz. It is a stone known by few, with a high reflective property, which has a particular history. It is called imperial, in fact, because its name is linked to Russia and, more precisely, to the time of the tsars. In the nineteenth century, in fact, this type of topaz was mined in the mines of the Ural mountains. And only the tsar’s family was allowed to wear this gems. Recently this stone has been re-evaluated and has become part of high jewelery collections, such as that of Cartier.

The French Maison has used two-tone imperial topaz (but in this case they come from Brazil), together with sapphires, diamonds and rutilated quartz, mounted on white gold. If the imperial topaz is reminiscent of the tsars, the style of these jewels is instead linked to the art deco period, with geometric virtuosity and an aspect that would have been liked by Jeanne Toussaint, the historical designer and artistic director of Cartier between 1933 and 1970.

Cartier Panthers in Vienna for Dorotheum

For a day the Cartier brand will shine more in Vienna than in Paris. The Dorotheum auction house, in fact, is planning more than 20 selected pieces from the French Maison for 29 April, as well as Tiffany, Pomellato and collectible diamond jewelry.

Diadema di Cartier Londra, tempestato da 70 carati di acquemarine
Diadema di Cartier Londra, tempestato da 70 carati di acquemarine

Among the most important pieces at the auction stands a Cartier London diadem, studded with 70 carats of aquamarines: it is considered the top lot of the auction. Dating back to the 1930s, the diadem is therefore a classic creation of the art deco period, given that the aquamarines were very popular at the time. The tiara can also be worn as a necklace. The estimate of this high quality jewel is between 34,000 and 70,000 euros.

Always Cartier is present with the Panthère series, animal symbol of the French jeweler. Collectors from all over the world appreciate this design. Actresses, duchesses and princesses have been fascinated by the Panther motif. At auction, therefore, many pieces of this series are offered: pendants, necklaces, pendant earrings and bracelets, all with the unmistakable panther. Estimates start from € 6,500 for a bracelet, up to € 30,000 for a necklace. The proposed estimates have often been exceeded in the latest Dorotheum auctions.

It is worth mentioning the story of the Cartier panther.
The first appearance of the Cartier panther is from 1914 on an advertising poster by the French painter and illustrator George Barbier. Shortly afterwards Jeanne Toussaint, who became the director of the bags and accessories department, and in 1933 the artistic director of the Parisian house’s jewelry sector, began the panther era. The creations with the noble predator symbolized self-awareness, elegance and independence, reasons why Jeanne Toussaint could identify herself as the Coco Chanel of the art of jewelry. She herself, Jeanne Toussaint, was nicknamed by Luis Cartier with the name of “panther”. Jeanne worked for the French jeweler until 1970 and her panther is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the new Cartier collections to date.

Cartier’s secrets told by an heir to the historic family of French jewelers

Do you want to make a gift? You can choose Cartier. And you don’t need to have a big budget, you need just $ 31.50 (and an account on Amazon). Of course, at that price you can’t buy a jewel, even if the book that tells the story of the Cartier family, so far little known, is in its own way. In short, a literary jewel for jewelry lovers. Moreover, writing the book, which is in English and is called The Cartiers: The Untold Story of the Family, is a descendant of the dynasty of the great French jewelers, Francesca Cartier Brickell.

Now Cartier is part of the Swiss group Richemont, which reports to the South African entrepreneur Johann Peter Rupert. But the Cartier family has maintained the business for four generations. The birth of the book also has a romantic aspect: the author tells that she was not particularly interested in the history of the family until she found a packet of letters in her grandfather’s cellar. Then, family stories sparked curiosity.

As always happens, before wealth there is poverty. The history of the Cartier family is no exception: the grandfather of Francesca Cartier Brickell’s grandfather, Louis-François Cartier, was part of the working class before founding the company that still bears his name. It was 1847. As a craftsman, the first Cartier became a shop owner capable of attracting customers and becoming a reference point for jewelery, through revolutions and wars. Merit also and above all of the ability of the Cartiers in interpreting the tastes of the Parisians, but also of the care for the invoice of the jewels and the ability in identifying false stones and earning a license of honesty: a not secondary aspect for a jewelry of the epoch , without the technical means of the current ones.

In addition, the Cartier Maison has been able to introduce cutting-edge design for that time, and has sensed the power of public relations and marketing in advance. In advance of the times they had established what is now defined as customer relationship management. An example: besides the personalized cards of the various customers, Cartier had also introduced those for the recipients, with measures, tastes, idiosyncrasies. And of course, so much discretion. Over the years the Cartiers in Paris have become an institution and have woven friendship and relationships (even marriages) with other important families, primarily those of jewelery, such as the Fabergé and Van Cleef et Arpels.

Statistically, at the third generation the great majority of family businesses go into crisis. In the third generation, however, Cartier had opened boutiques in Paris, New York and London and supplied jewelry to the ruling families, for example to the British king Edward VII. And, years later, they chose Cartier some characters like Jackie Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe and Maria Callas, Wally Simpson, to name a few. The book, in addition to the history of the family, also tells the evolution of taste, from Art Nouveau to Art Deco. Until the sale of the brand, now in its fourth family generation, 115 years after its foundation.
