Marlù bucking the trend opens 4 single-brand stores

While illustrious jewelery houses are suffering from the crisis caused by the pandemic, there are fewer famous brands that are expanding. Possible? Going against the tide is Marlù of San Marino (a little State in center of Italy), a company that sells prêt-à-porter jewels and bijoux in colored and worked steel. The super affordable jewelry brand created by the three sisters Morena, Monica and Marta Fabbri, opens new single-brand stores in the heart of the historic centers of four major Italian cities: Milan, Bologna, Bari and Florence. Not only that: next to the traditional shop, it offers an e-commerce system that allows customers of the 36 Marlù-branded shops to book online and buy from their trusted retailer. One way to avoid queues and crowds. Alternatively, you can receive your purchases at home.

To be precise, new stores are in via Torino in Milan (opening December 4th), in via Indipendenza in Bologna (December 14th) via Argiro in Bari (December 14th) and in via dei Calzolari in Florence (January 8th). The Marlù single-brand stores are now located in 12 Italian regions, and are added to over a thousand points of sale throughout the Italian territory.

From March to today we live like every person great difficulties. The pandemic has radically changed relations between people, daily life and all this has also entered the business world. But in our small way we tried to give a concert signal of confidence in the recovery and invest in the four new openings. We are a reality created by three sisters and like all women we are used to confronting problems immediately. During the lock down we immediately adopted, and also maintained in recent months, forms of remote work, we networked with our partner companies and started a production of health prevention devices from dispensers to sanitizing gels with the TimeToBeCareful brand , putting businesses back on track as early as April.

“My sisters and I have tried to see within a dramatic crisis what may also be the opportunities to reduce the economic impact of the pandemic. Already today lay the foundations for a real recovery starting next year – continues Marta Fabbri – for this reason, we have decided to open new stores this December. Those in Milan, Bologna and Florence are our property and the one in Bari instead opens thanks to the trust of an entrepreneur from that city, who believed in our development project. The restart, in fact, will not be a sort of slow motion that takes us back in time. We will find ourselves in a profoundly changed entrepreneurial and productive system, with which we will have to be ready to confront “.

To support the stores, the Marlù single-brand stores use simple Whatsapp numbers: each customer can book each jewel online from their trusted retailer. Net of the limitations of recent months for hours, movements and openings, the brand’s goal is to keep the proximity store customer relationship alive and constant. You choose the jewels from showcases and catalogs, you collect them in the shop without queues or gatherings or you ask to receive them directly at home. Also in this way it is possible to send gifts for relatives and friends throughout Italy. Not only that: communication passes first of all through social media, from Instagram, Facebook, Tik Tok and YouTube. The community gathers Millennials, GenZs and Baby Boomers and e-commerce, says Marta Fabbri, has grown in triple figures.

The Greek mesh of Bona Tondinelli

//

In Florence, the high-end bijoux are those of Bona Tondinelli. The designer, however, has a particular history, because until 2011 she was an antique dealer and interior designer. And it is the reason that pushes her to creations that have a slightly vintage flavor. After her studies in London and Paris, in 2012 Bona Tondinelli transformed the antiques shop into a bijoux shop and to design collections that are performed by a Florentine laboratory with totally artisanal criteria. The designer defines her creations as jewelry with a soul, jewelry with a soul. All the more so when holidays like Christmas are approaching.

The designer, for example, for 2020 proposes the Maglia Greca collection, bijoux with emerald green and ruby red cubic zirconia, enclosed in a Greek mesh, dipped in 18-karat gold. The necklaces are of various sizes, from the collier to the long sautoir, which can be turned several times around the neck. It is also possible to customize by combining the links with chains and cultured pearls. All the creations are handcrafted made of brass with antique plating, bathed first in silver, then in gold. The stones used by the designer are semiprecious: agate, onyx, carnelian, colored jade, cultured pearls and the enamels are done by hand.

The Greek mesh is composed of two tiny columns with capitals, here is the reference to the Greek temples: the central slot lends itself to being embellished with zircon baguettes, but it is also beautiful empty. Starting from the shirt, the entire collection was created including the rings and earrings.

In short, the American designer has plans to develop more and more what stands beside the classic production of clothes. It is no coincidence that the brand has long begun to offer its jewels, like the ones you see on this page. It is not yet clear, however, if Ralph Lauren will try his hand at a more demanding jewelry, as other fashion brands have already done, often with excellent results. For now, most of its flagship jewels are in silver, but also in rose gold and diamonds.

The bijoux with the Versace frieze

//

«Reggio is the kingdom where the story of my life began: my mother’s tailoring, the Haute Couture boutique. The place where, as a child, I began to appreciate the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Aeneid, where I began to breathe the art of Magna Graecia “, said Gianni Versace in 1992. This explains the preference for the brand of Italian fashion for the decorative motifs that refer to the atmosphere of the classical age. The coastal area of Calabria, in southern Italy, was in fact a Greek colony before being conquered by the ancient Romans.

Anello con motivo greco

It is not surprising, in short, that the echo of that age has struck the designer’s imagination, who has made a distinctive sign of the style inspired by Magna Graecia. And this applies not only to clothes, but also to accessories, such as bracelets, necklaces and rings. The Greek line is used in different ways, but the aesthetic that immediately distinguishes a Versace product has always remained. However, these are luxury bijoux, where what matters is the immediate recognition of the brand more than the material with which the different pieces are made, that is, simple metal with a thin gold patina.

The rings can also hide the coronavirus

/

Do jewels hide the evil coronavirus? Doctors sound the alarm. And, in fact, it would be enough to reflect: of course, they can constitute a danger, in particular the rings. So you don’t have to wear rings until the health emergency is over? The answer is no, but …

Lavare spesso le mani
Lavare spesso le mani

The alarm involving jewelry comes from the United States. Rochelle Walensky, head of the infectious diseases division at Massachusetts General Hospital, wrote an email, published by the Usa Today newspaper. “In a situation in which we are, with extraordinary measures to limit the Covid-19 transmission, I think the removal of jewelry rings when washing hands is a wise step forward,” he said. Watches are also part of objects that can come into contact with the virus and become dangerous vehicles of infection.
Pulizia di un anello

But there is no need to avoid wearing rings or watches, as long as you often wash your hands scrupulously. And, while we’re at it, you can take the opportunity to also clean the jewels, starting with the rings (on gioiellis.com you will find many tips on how to proceed in the section Da sapere).
perle pulizia2
Pulizia di una collana di perle

According to Walensky, in fact, studies on coronavirus have shown that germs can live between the skin of the finger and the metal of the rings for some time, even if there is no reliable data on how long the germs can resist in that condition. Another expert questioned by the newspaper, Nikita Desai, a pneumologist at the Cleveland Clinic, reiterates: “When health workers prepare to activate procedures in sterile conditions, such as surgery, the hands must be washed and without rings, watches and jewelry. This significantly reduces the risk of spreading the disease, thanks to the cleanest hands possible.” According to Desai, viable viruses were detected up to four hours after exposure on copper, up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to 2-3 days days on plastic and stainless steel, in short, clean hands and jewels.

Art Deco and modern design in Arte Facta bijoux

//

According to the dictionary, in the Italian language the word artifact refers to a work that derives from an intentional transformation process by man. A definition that is also perfect for jewelry. With this reasoning, in 2014 Ilaria Quotta founded the Arte Facta brand, which also offers accessories, such as bags. Jewelry and bags, however, have one thing in common: they focus entirely on design, in the sign of art deco. On the other hand, Arte Facta is based in Milan, which is the Italian capital of design.

After graduation, she worked as a designer and product manager in the clothing sector. Experiences that served to start one’s own business and, above all, an exclusive style. Modernist architecture, jazz, but also rock & roll are its inspiring muses. However, the designer also underlines a marked sensitivity to respect for the environment.

The buttons transformed into bijoux-design by Lea Stein are on exhibition

French Lea Stein is considered an innovative designer in the field of plastic jewelry. An exhibition at the Bijou Museum in Casalmaggiore (Cremona) is dedicated to the designer, describing his creative career.

Lea Stein, spilla Tenniste. Foto: Luigi Briselli

Lorena Taddei, a Milanese antique dealer, acted as a link between the artist and the museum. Directly from Lea Stein’s Parisian archive, hundreds of pieces never before exhibited were received in Casalmaggiore: the rarest brooches, among which the amazing silk-screened, the objects of tablecloths (some of them created for the Maison Guerlain), bracelets, rings, necklaces and buttons.

The sentimental, and then also professional, adventure of Lea and Fernand Steinberger starts from a button: they meet by chance, he compliments her for an original button that she wears. Only a few years after that meeting, however, the two meet again and can unite their lives and passions. Born in 1936 in Paris from a Jewish family of Polish origin and who escaped the horrors of the war, Lea Stein began the production of her brooches in the sixties: collectors know her characters (the Ballerina, Carmen, the Diver …) and animals (the Ric dog, the Gomina cat, the famous Fox …), made in the most curious and fascinating patterns with cellulose acetate sheets, cut and superimposed by her husband Fernand with a technique he himself invented and still secret.

The originality of her pieces is therefore entrusted to this ingenious recipe and is guaranteed by the dovetail clasps on which the inscription Lea Stein – Paris is engraved.

The exhibition will remain open until February 16, 2020 in the Zaffanella room of the museum and is curated by Lorena Taddei, in collaboration with Roberto Cavaglià, Elisabetta Ghidini and Paolo Zani, and with photos by Luigi Briselli, translations by Silvia Tomasoni.

The eco friendly rings by Sbottonando

/

The accessory brand Sbottonando launches the Triuso acetate rings, friends of the environment ♦ ︎

Here are the rings that Greta Thunberg (maybe) likes, the Swedish girl who has become the symbol of the struggle for environmental protection. In Rome, many kilometers south of Stockholm, an eco-friendly jewelry line is born. This is Triuso and is launched by Sbottonando, a brand of eco-sustainable accessories founded by Michela Monaco.

La modella Tamara D'Andria indossa anelli TRIuSo
La modella Tamara D’Andria indossa anelli TRIuSo

The Triuso rings (which the brand writes with capital letters TRIuSo) are made with a particular cellulose acetate, obtained from cellulose obtained from the cotton plant and wood fibers. This cellulose, compared to the traditional one, is composed of a higher percentage of elements obtained from renewable sources. And also the plasticizer necessary for making an acetate plate is of vegetable origin.

Tamara D'Andria con gli anelli eco friendly
Tamara D’Andria con gli anelli eco friendly

Not only that: the rings of Sbottonando arise from the recovery of industrial waste from the production of glasses. The rings have transparent or monocolored colors, or with many different shades.

Sbottonando was born years ago from a ring made for fun. Over the years, I have made thousands of jewels, one by one, a meticulous craftsmanship aimed at enhancing the uniqueness of each piece, recovering hundreds of flashes, scraps from tailored workshops, unused buttons. Triuso is a very different line from the previous ones, but united by the concept of eco-sustainability and the recovery of materials that would otherwise remain unused. Everything started last year when Legambiente asked me to create creations for a fundraising campaign. I needed buttons with a shape that could remind the turtle’s carapace and clearly an environmentally-friendly material. The search for a company that could support me in the realization of my idea and that was sensitive to environmental issues, led to the birth of a splendid synergy with Essequadro, leader in the production of glasses. The extraordinary nature of the work consists in the meticulous craftsmanship that is hidden behind each ring, each polished, brushed and finished by hand. One by one, each piece is unique.

The Brosway Chakra anklets

/

Brosway launches the anklets for the Chakra collection in metal, Swarovski crystals and natural stones ♦ ︎

If you are not familiar with Hinduism, know that chakra is a word that in Sanskrit (the ancient Indian language) means wheel, disk or circle. In addition, it has also taken on a meaning related to Indian spirituality inherent in yoga and Ayurvedic medicine, originating from the Tantric traditions, both of Hinduism and of Buddhism. The matter may not be of interest to you, but the fact is that Chakra is also one of Brosway’s most successful collections. So much so that for autumn winter 2019-2020 it has been renewed.

The Myths of Pierre d’Alexis

Unique pieces, gems, esotericism in the jewels of the Swiss brand Pierre d’Alexis ♦ ︎

The love for gems is manifested in many different ways. Sometimes, even surprisingly, for example in the École de la Vallée de Joux. In this corner of Switzerland, in the Jura valley, canton of Vaud, in 1994 he specialized in fine jewelry and gemology Grégoire Maret. Craftsman and jeweler, Maret has created Pierre d’Alexis, a small boutique that produces unique pieces with a style far from any tradition, between minimal and eclectic, small single works.

Maret, in fact, loves art jewelry, commissioned pieces or an expression of his free creativity, which he creates himself. There is also a good dose of symbolism and more or less explicit references to the ancient civilizations of the past, and to tribal, Egyptian and Viking art. And, finally, it went even further back in time to the cultural rediscovery of Celtic art, which inspired the first pieces of its collection of unique and numbered jewels. The Cosmic Flower ring, for example, represents plant dynamics and underlying esotericism. But you might like it even if you consider it simply in the shape of a star.

Kathrin Lindner, a novelty in London

Kathrin Lindner, new accessible jewelry brand created in London ♦

In London a new accessible jewelry brand is born. German entrepreneur Kathrin Lindner and Moroccan Aziz Settouti founded it, both determined to change their life after a managerial experience in a multinational company in Amsterdam. Different experiences and skills that have now decided to express themselves through jewelry. Among other things, unlike other similar companies, the brand proposes an unusual corporate management program, that is to say programmatic principles of behavior usually adopted by large groups. For example, a flat Silicon Valley-style organization (“no to the policy rules”, “If you are able to manage work, that work is yours”), innovative and socially engaged.

The jewels have perhaps a less disruptive style: there is the classic hand of Fatima, the quadrilobate flower, butterflies. In short, the classic themes of jewelry.

The jewels are made of silver, also plated with pink gold, with the addition of cubic zirconia and have a price range between 25 and 85 euros.

Dogs, cats and Le Petit Story

Dogs, cats and many good feelings: these are the bijoux from the Dog & Kitty collection offered by Le Petit Story ♦ ︎

Emotions are more important than things. And this principle also applies to jewelry: a memory, a feeling, a kindness are worth more than noble metals given without a soul. In short, as we usually say, it is the thought that is more important. And it is around this philosophy, the marketing of emotions, that the Morellato group has created a new brand: Le Petit Story. Bijoux simple, made in steel, at a price very, very low. They will not be given as precious objects: the company defines them rather “sentimental jewelry”.

Children, dogs and cats, affectionate phrases engraved on a medal, are the subjects of the Le Petit Story collections.

For example, the first Dog & Kitty collection has the subject of animals, and serves “to support and help 4-legged friends and less fortunate kittens” alongside OIPA, the International Organization for Animal Protection, through the Le Petit Story Loves initiative. Dog & Kitty, with the aim of supporting projects and initiatives in favor of animals that are in situations of neglect and illness. And offer to those who buy bracelets (29 euros) and earrings (29 euros) an extra positive emotion. Giulia Netrese

Homi Fashion & Jewels is born

Homi Fashion & Jewels is born, a spin-off of the fair held twice a year in Milan ♦ ︎

In Milan, in Italy a new fair dedicated to jewelry or, more precisely, to bijoux. It will be called Homi Fashion & Jewels, a six-monthly event dedicated to the world of bijoux and fashion accessories. Actually this appointment already exists, only that it is incorporated into Homi, a fair that includes other types of products. Now, however, Homi has decided to split into three. Next to Homi Fashion & Jewels, is born Homi Outdoor, on an annual basis: it’s focusing to outdoor combined with the home & decoration offer. These two new formats will take place from 13 to 16 September 2019. The third format is called, instead, Homi the Lifestyles Exhibition, and will focus on a single major edition starting in January 2020.

It should be noted that Homi Fashion & Jewels will be close to VicenzaOro September (7-11 September 2019).

Although the vast majority of exhibitors at the two events are different, there are some brands that usually participate in both fairs. For example, Lebole Gioielli, Alcozer, Aibijoux. The almost overlap will probably put these brands in front of a choice, or a difficult logistics organization.
The latest edition of Homi in January, number 11, saw the participation of 80 thousand operators from more than 90 countries, including Russia (605 registered ones), Spain, Switzerland, China, France and Japan.
