New jewelers in support of Ukraine

Jewelers in support of Ukraine. In March, some jewelers launched a fundraiser for children who were victims of war. So far they have raised around £ 25,000 for Hope and Homes for Children, an NGO currently working in Ukraine, in combination with gems extracted from a Brazilian Cruzeiro mine. The support action continues and other designs have been added in recent months. Brazilian-born designer Ana Khouri, for example, has just donated a pair of earrings in yellow beryl and blue indicolite tourmaline, the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

The idea of the jewelry for Ukraine is by Annabel Davidson of Vanity Fair on Jewelery: when Russia started the war she was in Brazil visiting the Cruzeiro mine, which is located in the state of Minas Gerais, north of Sao Paulo . The mine produces tourmaline, quartz, morganite, aquamarine and garnet, as well as blue indicolite tourmaline and yellow heliodine, the colors of the Ukrainian flag. Davidson put two and two together.

The CEO of the mine, Douglas Neves, immediately agreed to donate the gems for the project to support the Ukrainian people. They joined immediately: Carla Amorim, Ara Vartanian, Prasi and Kika Alvarenga from Brazil, Jessica McCormack in London,  Ana Khouri in New York and Maggi Simpkins based in Los Angeles, together with Ruth Tomlinson and Sophie Breitmeyer. Other jewelers, such as Solange Azagury-Partridge, Anabela Chan and Robinson Pelham, have instead decided to support the Red Cross or organizations such as Care and Save the Children UK.

Auverture opens to vintage

From trendy designers to vintage jewelry from great Maison. Auverture, the website founded by one of the most refined creative women in high jewelery, Bibi Van Der Velden, surprisingly opened the doors to a new genre of proposals. The marketplace, in fact, has inaugurated a section dedicated to vintage jewelry, with pieces also signed by brands such as Bulgari, Cartier, Tiffany or Val Cleef & Arpels. They are jewels made in the last century and put back into circulation to be worn again. It is the same kind of jewelry found on sites like 1stdibs, but also, with due proportions, at Sotheby’s or Christie’s. And it is a sign that high quality jewels maintain their value over time, because they continue to have a market.

That Auverture proposing these jewels, however, surprised those who considered Bibi Van Der Velden’s site as a space dedicated exclusively to the most innovative contemporary designers, such as Fernando Jorge, Ana Khouri, Bia Tambelli, Venyx, Alice Cicolini, Nikos Koulis , just to name a few. With the support of vintage jewelry, however, Auverture is now able to meet the requests of collectors and design enthusiasts of the past.

Ana Khouri between Maia and social responsibility

//

While there are those who emphasize using recycled gold to demonstrate her good intentions, there are also those, like Ana Khouri, who beat everyone with her Brazilian non-profit organization Projeto Ovo. The Brazilian designer based in New York has led her Projeto Ovo since 2014, which donates 100% of all sales proceeds to 75 NGOs. In short, Ana Khouri is a champion of goodness. But she is also a jewelry professional who likes to choose little traveled roads. For example, some jewelry is handcrafted in the United States with silver-based prong settings, a late 19th-century Ottoman technique called falamenk.

Among the most recent creations, for example, the Maia collection uses this goldsmith technique to propose wrapping earrings and rings crossed by circles formed by a spiral, in 18-karat gold, or enriched with diamonds and precious stones. In fact, the designer has a long experience in the choice of gems: after graduating from Gia and Parsons in New York, she has worked on single projects since 2002 and officially launched her eponymous line Maison in 2013. Needless to add, her work is made exclusively with 18K Fairmined, Fairtrade or platinum gold and precious stones of ethical and responsible origin.

Those shoes are jewels

Shoes-jewel designed by five jewelry designers for Aquazzura: a strange experiment ♦ ︎

Gioiellis.com is a vertical site: it writes, that is, about only one topic, the jewels. For once, however, we make an exception, but only partially. Because we talk about Sabine Getty, Noor Fares, Eugenie Niarchos, Anissa Kermiche and Ana Khouri: all jewelry designers, all young, cute and full of creativity. All, however, were called to express their imagination with another type of accessory: shoes.

For Net-a-porter Edgardo Osorio asked the designers to design a pair of shoes for the Aquazzura brand.

In some cases, as was reasonable to expect, they are shoes that do not forget the main activity of the designer, that of jewelry. In other cases it is less experimental and more traditional shoes. The form, in short, also reflects the style that designers express with their jewels. For example, the Memphis Wave motif of Sabine Getty, which was made of crystals, with the perspex strap. Noor Fares, instead, preferred to focus on a special heel, covered with a pavé. But perhaps the shoe that is most noticeable is that of Anissa Kermiche with a heel made up of three gold and pearl hoops. Price: $ 1,152. Giulia Netrese
