Military-style Timex

New watches signed by the American brand Timex. They are those of the North Sierra Eco-Friendly line, which are part of the Expedition collection. Two new timepieces are added to the line that focus on design and functionality. The round case of the two watches is made of low-lead brass in satin silver color, with a diameter of 40 mm. The dials use Indiglo lighting, a proprietary technology of Timex, introduced in 1992, whose name derives from the word Indigo: they emit a blue-green color each time the crown is pressed. The clock is illuminated thanks to the thin phosphor panel placed under the dial.

For the dials, the new watches adopt a military-inspired design with Arabic numerals with an essential font and two concentric numerals for the dual indication of the Am/Pm time, the outer perimeter with the numerals for hours 1-12 and the inner perimeter with the 13-24, smaller and in contrasting colour. The date window is at 3 o’clock, the Timex logo at 12 o’clock and the collection signature (Expedition) at 6 o’clock. The hour and minute hands are luminescent, the seconds hand has an arrow tip and counterweight.

The straps are made of fabric, with pin buckle, with Tide Ocean Material, obtained with 100% recycled plastics. At the bottom of the strap is the leaf symbol as an indication of the recycled material. The new proposals enrich the collection with new colors: blue dial and strap, white indexes and spheres or natural tones with cream dial, black and red indexes and green strap.

Case: metal, 40 mm
Movement: quartz with date
Dial: Blue or Cream with Indiglo Illumination
Strap: Tide Ocean Material fabric with quick release, blue or green

The super watches of footballers

Lots of money, lots of goals, lots of watches. And above all, expensive watches: footballers are among the biggest collectors of timepieces. But, of course, these aren’t just any watches: the great champions choose hands and dials that cost a fortune and which they often keep closed in a drawer (or in a safe) to avoid bad adventures. Watchfinder & Co., a British company specializing in used luxury watches, has revealed which models some of the most famous champions have in their pockets.

Lionel Messi, for example, among his watches has a Patek Philippe Nautilus, considered one of the most sought after Grail Watches on the market. It is also one of the most iconic sports watches, with a rounded octagonal shape and porthole construction, which does justice to the name Nautilus (the submarine from Jules Verne’s book 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea). The most surprising aspect is that Messi owns three different Nautiluses. The watch is sold in different versions, with prices ranging from 50,000 euros to over 3 million. The Nautilus was also chosen by the Swede Zlatan Ibrahimović.

A timeless classic of watchmaking is the Rolex. He owns a collection of timepieces by the Swiss brand Francesco Totti, former captain of Roma and considered one of the most talented footballers of all time. A Rolex Day-Date is on the wrist of two English forwards, Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling. The Rolex Day-Date was first introduced in the 1970s and featured brightly colored enamel dials, red, green, blue and even amber, in keeping with the style of that decade. Today the watch has evolved into a more traditional timepiece, with more classic colors such as navy blue, ivory white and champagne.

The Rolex Daytona model is instead among the favorite watches of the goalkeeper of the English national team and of Everton, Jordan Pickford, and of the super champion Cristiano Ronaldo (long-time Tag Heuer ambassador), who now plays in Saudi Arabia. Ronaldo, however, also owns (among others) a Rolex GMT-Master II 116769TBR, in 18-karat white gold completely covered with 30 carats of white diamonds and which costs more than 400,000 euros, plus a Jacob and Co. Epic X’ Flight of CR7, a Rolex GMT Master II Ice, a Breguet Classique Grande Complications Double Tourbillon, a Jacob & Co. Bugatti Chiron CR7, a Hublot Masterpiece MP09 Tourbillon Bi-Axis King Gold, a Franck Muller Tourbillon Trumps Van Cleef & Arpels, a Franck Muller Cintree Curvex Tourbillon, a Girard Perregaux Planetarium Tri-Axial, all with prices over $1 million. Not to mention the Bvlgari Octo Tourbillon Full Baguette Diamonds, a watch produced in just eight pieces and costing over 650,000 euros. The Rolex Daytona, by comparison, is a modest watch. It’s also the classic Indy-Car driver’s wristwatch: it was originally designed in the 1960s to meet the needs of racing drivers. By the way, in the English league, Manchester City’s Norwegian forward Erling Haaland also owns one, with a gold crown and a royal green dial.

Still in the top watches genre, a Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5164R has Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount and Liverpool Dutch defender Virgil Van Dijk as their counterparts. The Aquanaut was first introduced in 1997 as the little brother of the hugely popular Nautilus range, featuring a three-part case and screw-down crown capable of withstanding up to 120 meters of water pressure. Since it is a more accessible model of Patek Phillipe, the waiting list times have increased as a result: earlier this year the manufacturer officially closed the waiting list for the 40mm variant.

The French Kylian Mbappé, on the other hand, owns a Spirit of Big Bang King Gold Rainbow by Hublot in a special gold and platinum alloy, and studded with colored gems. On the other hand, the PSG striker is one of the ambassadors of Hublot.

Alarm for the fake watches

Alarm for fake jewelry and watch. The counterfeiting business is on the rise and also involves the jewelery sector. The numbers, announced during an event organized as part of Vo Vintage (the space dedicated to vintage watches and jewelery parallel to Vicenzaoro), leave no doubts: globally, the fake market is worth 464 billion dollars, 134 billion in Europe and 32 billion euros in Italy. «Counterfeiting is a scourge for the watchmaking sector, our duty is to tell the consumer about the phenomenon and educate him on a safe and informed purchase», explained Mario Peserico, president of Assorologi. «Often the final consumer does not notice the mistake when he buys counterfeit products, especially since the web has become the main sales medium. This is the phenomenon of hidden links: posts on social networks that offer the sale of products, such as clothing, shoes, watches, with a code inside. If you click it, a catalog of apparently original, but actually fake products appears. The low price can be alarming. This is why it is essential that sales platforms do everything possible to eradicate the presence of counterfeiters».

According to Bruno Bergamaschi, one of the most recognized watchmaking experts in Italy, «counterfeiting is a problem that is difficult for enthusiasts to solve, the safest thing is to rely on official networks or physical points of sale who can give a guarantee, otherwise it’s really easy run into fakes, even for an expert. Blockchain technology is the only way to protect the consumer and also the brand».

Invest in watches? Especially popular in Asia

Who said the clock is outdated? The numbers indicate the opposite, at least according to data relating to the Swiss watch industry contained in the ninth report Deloitte Swiss Watch Industry Study 2022: sales with e-commerce will double by 2030, and are 35 billion Swiss francs (as of moment the exchange rate is approximately at par with the euro and the dollar) of worldwide growth in the second-hand market. The survey was conducted among 70 senior watch industry executives and nearly 6,000 consumers in Switzerland, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland, UAE, UK and USA .

Deloitte’s analysis underlines some interesting aspects: the majority (57%) of the executives of the Swiss watch industry interviewed expect a positive 2023 for the sector, even if in decline. But as of early 2022, more than three-quarters (77%) of executives predicted a rosy outlook. Furthermore, nearly 80% of watch industry executives say that geopolitical uncertainty caused by the war in Ukraine and tensions between China and the United States is negatively impacting the company’s outlook.

The United States continues to be the most important country for the Swiss watch industry in terms of export volumes (77% still expect growth), but India and China are gaining weight. However, expectations are different: for Hong Kong, the decline or stagnation is expected to continue, while only 57% of those interviewed believe that the market in China will grow.

The time of e-commerce
According to the report, 40% of consumers and 45% of respondents under the age of 40 are the most likely to buy online. The majority of Swiss watch industry executives believe that traditional stores will continue to be the most important sales platform in the foreseeable future. In Italy, for example, the shop remains the preferred place for 61% of consumers, but in Anglo-Saxon, Asian and even United Arab countries buying a watch online is increasingly popular.

With two in five consumers preferring to buy their watches online, it is imperative that brands expand e-commerce channels and expand their already rich offline offering to meet customer expectations. According to our estimates, the share of watches purchased online is set to double to 30% by 2030.

Watches are always an investment
The report confirms the widespread opinion that a good watch is also an investment. 23% of consumers buy watches with the idea of reselling them: the business is especially popular in Singapore (33%), Hong Kong (32%) and China (29%). This also explains why consumers in some Asian markets are willing to spend more on new watches. In China, for example, more than a third (35%) say they are willing to shell out 5,000 Swiss francs or more for a new watch, while paradoxically in the home of watchmaking, Switzerland, the percentage drops to 8% and in France only 2%. Consumers who buy a watch as an investment obviously intend to sell it at a higher price (36%), but they also see watches as a way to diversify their portfolio (33%). Among the latter, Chinese consumers seem to be the most interested (55%).

The used market
Sales have inevitably created a parallel market: a third of customers (31%) expect to buy a second-hand watch in the next year and companies are creating their own second-hand sales channels. Second-hand watches are increasingly popular, especially among millennials and generation Z: 48% of younger respondents are interested in a pre-owned branded timepiece, obviously because the price is lower (44%) than new, but also because a discontinued model can be found (29%). Not to mention that there are those (21%) who consider buying a second-hand watch for environmental reasons.

The growth of the used watch market does not worry the producers: 70% of the managers interviewed consider this phenomenon positive because it positively influences the perception and value of the brand. Deloitte expects the current market size of approximately 20 billion Swiss francs to continue to grow significantly over the next few years, to nearly 35 billion Swiss francs by the end of the decade, becoming more than half that to the new watch market.
