Salvatore Collaro between pearls and coral

Coral and pearls: Salvatore Collaro continues the tradition of jewelry with the sons of the sea ♦ ︎

If you, in italian language, anagram the word coral, you can get Collaro. Who knows, maybe that’s also what the Collaro family has tied to the red son of the sea. Founded at the end of the 1950s by Salvatore and Lella Collaro, the Torre del Greco (Naples) company continues to observe the tradition of the founders. The coral, however, has adapted to the times and the jewels have a modern look, with volumes not prone to chisel work but rather with smooth, smooth surfaces.

At Centro Orafo il Tarì, where Salvatore Collaro has the headquarters, another type of sea fruit is still working: the pearl. Australian, Chinese, Japanese or Thaiti, pearls are used for jewels created by the fantasy of Liliana and Lucia, who continue the family tradition. Jewelery with pearls also have the advantage of being interpreted in a younger, lighter way, while jewelery with coral, often adorned with a diamond pavé, are more demanding. Here are some of the latest creations of the Neapolitan Maison.

The Tarì really represents a privileged point of view with respect to the general trend of the production and distribution sector of Italian jewelery, especially in Italy Centrosud. After the difficult period dictated by the pandemic, the expected return to normalcy, also by virtue of the vaccination campaign, sees the Italian regions with the most marked tourist aptitude as protagonists. From this point of view, the centrality of Tarì in the Centrosud regions offers the jewelers category the great advantage of having an organized context available every day, with the stable presence of artisans, production companies, distribution and highly specialized services, in able to give immediate response to every market need.

Among other things, the goldsmith center contributed to the vaccination campaign with the creation of a vaccines hub entirely dedicated to the goldsmith world: an initiative that has generated great appreciation among professionals in the sector and strengthened the perception of Tarì as a true point of reference. .

On the occasion of the October edition of Open! The Tesori Nascosti event will also be back, promoted by Ice and hosted again by Tarì. With an innovative Phigital format, the event will see the participation of 80 selected buyers from Europe and the Mediterranean, while on the virtual platform the business meetings will also directly involve international buyers who are still penalized by the difficulty of air transport.

This is not the time to just count numbers and turnover. Our goal is something else: to actively contribute, in a synergistic way, to the recovery of our sector. With this initiative, we intended to stand alongside all Italian jewelry professionals, whether they be producers or jewelers, and offer them the opportunity to meet again, in safety and concreteness. These days represented the first concrete opportunity to return to look at the next few months with confidence, and to glimpse, this time concretely, a light at the end of the tunnel.

Coscia, a pearl under Vesuvius

/

The centuries-old tradition of pearls from Coscia, a jeweler born just 100 years ago in Torre del Greco ♦

The story is rather adventurous and dates back to 1919, when Vincenzo Coscia, left from Torre del Greco, he landed on a small island of Mozambique, where the beaches were littered with shells carnelian, the best to produce cameos. Coscia, a jewelry company that today boasts a showroom at the Center goldsmith Tari (Caserta) was born under the sign of the trip. By the search for stones and precious materials to distant shores, to the markets of New York, Cape Town, Sydney.

In the Fifties the business was continued by his son, Vittorio, which widens the horizon and he specializes the company in the manufacture by cultured pearls, Australian and Japanese. The activities were continued and extended over the last twenty years by Giancarlo Coscia, who modernized the company to make it suitable to face new business challenges, with lines ad hoc, as Lelune (pearl necklaces classic), or Coscia 925 (younger style , with bracelets and pendants). The company, now known abroad, maintains its roots in the Greek Tower, a town on the slopes of Vesuvius, known worldwide for producing cameos and processing of corals. But it is the pearl of the core production of Coscia. Here are some of the jewels of the most significant collections of the brand Campania. Giulia Netrese

Tarì dodges the virus and confirms the business

Open! it’s closed. It sounds like a play on words, but it’s not. Open! is the event organized at Tarì, the distribution and production center of Marcianise (near Naples, Italy): four days dedicated to the jewelry business. And, despite the bad times, the balance seems positive: 480 companies present, including those operating all year round at the Center and those invited for the occasion, for a total of over 3,700 stores. It seems that the arrival of the general manager, Corrado Facco, who has the experience gained in the same role at VicenzaOro behind him, has helped.

Esterno del Tarì

We are very satisfied with the large participation in Open !. The results bode well for the relaunch of the sector: the difficulties were many, but the desire to get up is even greater and Open! he proved it. We made a courageous choice, wanting at all costs to transfer to the market a very strong signal of industriousness and confidence, which was widely appreciated. We have invested in very advanced technologies and in the training of human resources, to better face the security challenge we have faced. The results have amply repaid us, confirming the great confidence of the Italian retailer in the business formula proposed by Il Tarì.

According to the organizers, the turnout data and the volume of business were stable compared to the last important business event that took place at Tarì before the epidemic, in October 2019. Many organizational changes have taken place, complicit in this success , such as the new ways of accessing the Center and a pre-registration system for operators.
Furthermore, thanks to the collaboration with Ice, an expected incoming of European buyers from Poland, Croatia, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Spain and Albania took place, also organized with a structured agenda of appointments.

Tarì surrenders to the coronavirus

The Tarì Goldsmith Center has decided to suspend the Spring Preview event, scheduled for March 14-16. In light of government decisions that limit meetings and distances to be respected between people, the board of directors of Il Tarì has decided to postpone the Open Days initiative to be defined to a date to be defined, which should have taken place on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 March. The next event scheduled at the Tarì will therefore be the new Summer Preview format, scheduled from 8 to 11 May. For the occasion, explains a press release, «the Center will further enhance its role as a physical business platform for all established companies and for those arriving from the outside, in order to present their best collections thus generating unmissable business moments with the numerous delegations of national and international operators who will arrive on those dates at Il Tarì ».

Ciaravolo, not just red

Coral, more the precious stones, and more gold: here are the Ciaravolo jewels, Neapolitan jewelry from three generations ♦

Sometimes it is good to leave the big Maison that are on the stage, pushed by the media, to get to know the small but exceptional, goldsmiths who are around Italy. Some of these craft skills are, you know, near Torre del Greco, just steps from Naples. Here from generations are passed down the art of making corals, which over time has evolved to become a top quality jewelry. In short, those few business operator calls with disdain “corallari”, are often of the virtuosos of the chisel and setting, real artists of that precious gift from the sea. This is also the story of Ciaravolo, which has lasted three generations. Started by master engraver of statues and cameos by Vincenzo, it was continued by his son Giuseppe. From simple engraver, Pino Ciaravolo 50 years ago has started to produce jewelry. Today at the helm is Vincenzo, who has earned a reputation that goes beyond national boundaries.

Ciaravolo has found a place in the nearby Centro Goldsmith Tarì Marcianise (Caserta), where at the coral work, it has added that of gold and precious stones. Large chains with pavé diamonds, elaborate earrings that combine the coral stones, sumptuous rings, testify to the long road traveled by that from a small workshop has become a goldsmith really high level. The 100 years of Coscia

Coscia turns 100 and celebrates the milestone in VicenzaOro ♦ ︎

A century to celebrate. In 2019 Coscia celebrates its 100th anniversary and the Torre del Greco company has decided to celebrate the event at VicenzaOro September with a special event (which includes an exhibition of the company’s iconic pieces), Sunday 8 September. There are not many jewelry houses that can boast a similar longevity, obtained thanks to the entrepreneurial ability and creativity of the family that has been interpreting the jewel for three generations. Pearls, cameos and corals are the distinctive elements of the Coscia brand, founded in 1919 by the progenitor Vincenzo, in Torre del Greco, the city that is still today a center for the processing of coral and cameo.

In the 1980s, thanks to Giancarlo Coscia, Vincenzo’s nephew and current patron, the company extended its offer to cultivated pearls, another trademark of the Maison. For this reason, after the transfer of the company to the Il Tarì goldsmith center, Coscia’s «O» was replaced by the image of a pearl in the company logo. The company’s success has given reason to this choice.

Mondo Prezioso is back

Mondo Prezioso Winter, the appointment with the jewels of the South Italy (and not only) ♦ ︎

Italian jewels move from north to south. Filed VicenzaOro is the turn of Tarì with Mondo Prezioso (12-15 October). The tarì (with the small t) was the ancient currency of Amalfi. Now the Tarì (with a capital T) is linked precisely to that medieval tradition to mark its identity. In fact, in the center where the event takes place, the jewels are designed and produced, especially with companies that have a long tradition behind them. The Goldsmith Center of Marcianise is, after all, the heir of the medieval districts where the artisan guilds worked. But now much of the work is destined to cross the borders of Italy.

In the edition of Mondo Prezioso Winter, around 500 companies are expected, including 85 guests.

Mondo Prezioso
Mondo Prezioso

And at the b2b Hidden Treasures meeting, there are also 55 buyers from 19 countries. The fair, which has already turned 20, turns the spotlight on the work of the Marcianise production center. “Mondo Prezioso is the moment in which we compare the work of the companies that work at the Goldsmith Center”, says Floriana Marino, polo marketing manager. “But it is also an opportunity for the economy of the South: for some time, for example, jewelry and watchmaking have come back to fascinate many young people, who find in Marcianise an opportunity for work and develop their creativity”.

Mondo Prezioso will host four days of events, meetings and shop windows, alternating news and classics with the formula of Tarì: tight rhythms, welcoming space, atmosphere and hospitality at the top, with hundreds of goldsmith customers of the event.

Noteworthy are also the assistance services that the members of the Tarì offer, unique in Italy, to the customers present: embedding, repairs and personalized assistance, on Saturdays and Sundays allow retailers to carry out many indispensable activities often not available elsewhere.
Next to the commercial activity are scheduled appointments to capture ideas and fashion trends also in jewelry, with thematic focus and events focused on two aspects: the jewels of Oscar and Street Style.

The Bon Ton by Gianni Carità

/

The Bon Ton line by Gianni Carità & Figli, luxury jewelry made in the South Italy ♦ ︎
The wedding celebrated last summer (2017) in Capri between Pierpaolo Carità and Dalila Leperino (with 200 guests), has put back in the spotlight what is now a dynasty of jewelers accredited by success. Gianni Carità & Figli (Pierpaolo is the youngest of the three) is based in Tarì, a goldsmith’s center a few kilometers from Naples. But the company’s jewels are particularly popular many miles away, in countries like Belgium, Germany, England, Poland, Romania, Russia, Spain and the United States, but also Japan, where they arrived in 1985 with the opening of the first corner in the Department Store of Yokohama. The jewels of the Neapolitan Maison are not, however, linked to the particular style of the local tradition. To summarize, the company is not specialized only in coral jewelry or cameos. As exemplified by the collections based on white gold and diamonds, Gianni Carità & Figli, they travel in the high-end territory, in the wake of the classic goldsmith tradition. As well as, equally classic, is the processing of jewelry, consolidated in a goldsmith tradition of craftsmanship. An example? The Bon Ton Brillanti line, with pavé processing rings. Cameos with colors

The traditional cameos, but with tourmaline, signed Carada, company from Tarì center.
It is good that a country cultivate their traditions. In Italy the areas where are focused all the jewelry productions are four: Vicenza, Valenza, Arezzo and the area of Naples-Torre del Greek. Many companies in the latter area were later transferred to the center of Tari, name of the currency used in the ancient Maritime Republic of Amalfi, which was chosen as the name for this confederation of jewelry artisans on the outskirts of Caserta. Among them it is also Carada, a name chosen from a family who traditions knows very well: Ciro Schiavo. The small company born in the fifties in Torre del Greco and named after the founder. Like other companies with similar traditions, even Ciro Schiavo is a master in the engravings that are used to create elaborate cameos. His sons, Mario and Tommaso Schiavo, continued on the road begun by their father, but with the new Carada brand. The tradition remains intact: the production is of cameos and coral, but with the addition of colored stones, such as tourmaline. Lavinia Andorno

The Neapolitan caviar by 1,618demaria

The new collection by 1,618demaria, Neapolitan goldsmiths for five generations.
We read on Wikipedia: “The golden section or golden ratio or golden or constant number of Phidias or divine proportion, in the context of the visual arts and mathematics, it indicates the relationship between two unequal lengths, the largest of which is a mean proportional between the lower and the sum of the two. ” In short we say that the result of this relationship, after complicated mathematical equations, is the 1,618 number. The golden section, known for centuries as a symbol of perfection, is also the symbol figure assumed by a small company of Tari, the jewelery center of Caserta, who decided to call the brand 1,618demaria. For sure it’s a brand that you remember. Hard to say if the jewels of the Italian brand are a symbol of perfection, but the commitment to achieve the goal is not lacking. And most importantly, do not miss the experience: the company has a catalog of 10,000 models accumulated over five generations. The history of the family De Maria, lead by Dario and Ivana, dates back to the nineteenth century, when in Naples Salvatore De Maria was “a precursor of one of the techniques that has undoubtedly affected since ancient generations of goldsmiths, ie working to empty the barrel. ” A technique that allowed the machining of very reduced thicknesses of gold jewelry, and so from not getting high use of raw material and of affordable cost. Generation after generation, in the fifties and sixties, the company was one of the first in Naples using the technique of lost-wax casting with the centrifugal spring or elastic. Technical aspects. One of the results of the work is the collection curiously dedicated to a precious gastronomic element, but certainly not abundant in Naples, the caviar. Alessia Mongrando

Collaro, the classic is always in vogue

With a corporate rather stormy past (it was the late nineties) it is hard to recover. But Teresa Squillante, perhaps thanks to the synergies offered by the Goldsmith Center The Tarì, near Caserta, can now present the Collaro brand, founded by her husband Thomas, showing first of all its gold production. That was, and remains, a good level of quality. Jewelry, made entirely by hand with the right attention to detail, made from white gold, diamonds, precious stones. Nothing revolutionary: the idea is, if anything, to visually reassure that the main objective is to create jewelry that last. In short, do not go out of fashion and they retain their value. Earrings with rubies, rings with diamonds pavé and emeralds little erratic, necklaces with gemstones flowers, are just some examples of the expertise of the Neapolitan Jewelry, which has gone to Jck Las Vegas looking for foreign buyers. Mondo Prezioso is back (with a lot coral)

At Tarì of Caserta back Mondo Prezioso (see also https://gioiellis.com/intervista-parla-mr-tari). In Marcianise goldsmith center from April 29 to May 2 is staged the appointment (from 18 years) with 480 exhibitors, 400 of which are based within the Tarì, and 80 companies of the jewelery made in Italy. In addition to business (is a B2B trade show) are also appointments program like Seduction timeless. Coral and cameos between memory and modernity, exhibition promoted by Assocoral (Association of manufacturers of coral, cameos and similar) curated by anthropologist Cristina Del Mare: Saturday, opening April 30 at 12.00, with the participation of 30 member companies exhibiting private collections of haute joaillerie obviously made of coral and cameos, produced in the district of Torre del Greek (Naples). Monday, May 2, the closing date of the exhibition, is also planning a conference on new legislation, technical and traceability in jewellery, organized together with Federpreziosi and Federorafi. Tarì’s jokers

From 8 to 11 May the gold of Naples ends up again in Marcianise, Province of Caserta, to Tarì, with Mondo Prezioso exhibition. The gold district is the home of nearly 450 companies and the classical b2b appointment is reserved only to professionals. The companies, even during the fair, are distributed in the boot on the ground floor, the first and second floor of the complex. Not missing a prominent firms, as Leo Pizzo, Crivelli, Nardelli. Of course, its hard to compete with VicenzaOro or OroArezzo. The fair’s communication is poor to say the least. Or, better, it is totally inadequate. And the organizers aren’t struggling to explain why a professional should make hundred kilometers to go to Marcianise, which is not just around the corner. Moreover, they do not update even the website: an aspect that reveals a carelessness and an incomprehensible indifference. For example, clicking on the banner on the event in May, instead of getting information you are landed to the Tarì bijoux page of March. So the self-congratulation contained in the website under the heading “History”, sounds really funny: “It’s a symbol of entrepreneurial challenge, organizational capacity, sharing goals, that even today, after 15 years after the start up, cannot be compared either in Italy, or internationally”.  Without comparing, precisely.
