Lizzie Mandler’s made in Los Angeles design

///

Lizzie Mandler says she has been involved in jewelry since she was 16 years old. A passion she hasn’t lost, so much so that she has turned her passion into a profession. She works in Los Angeles, but before founding the Maison that has her name he studied goldsmithery for six years, also in Florence. In 2012, finally, she opened a shop.

Liza has it in her blood: her mother, Marisa Mandler, is an established American painter. Liza, on the other hand, applied her creativity to the world of jewelry: she chose a simple but refined style. Very precise shapes, starting from the study of a simple chain, but interpreted in her own way. The individual rings are tapered on the edges: an effect that makes even the largest chains lighter. The jewels are made in the three classic gold colors: yellow, pink or white, with the prevalence of the first. Furthermore, rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces use small diamonds often cut into baguettes (but not only), to integrate into the rigorous design of the jewels.

Pure Inspiration for Crieri

/

Minimalist, essential and, perhaps also for this reason, precious jewels. The intention of Crieri, Maison di Valenza (Italy), is deduced from the name of the Pura collection: that is, without frills. Only gold and diamonds in the most classic of jewelry proposals in sync with the season in which the greatest number of engagements and weddings are concentrated. At the center of the Pura collection is, of course, the diamond ring, the solitaire, intended to pair with the lucky one who receives it (or if she buys it alone). Furthermore, in the earrings and pendants signed Pura, the diamond is of considerable weight and size: 0.30 carats, with brilliant, navette, oval or emerald cut.

The setting of the stones is equally classic, with four prongs that use the traditional colors of gold: white, yellow and pink, again at 18 karat. The full pavé ring frames the main stone with brilliant cut diamonds, which completely cover the body of the jewel for a total carat weight of 0.75 carats. Crieri jewels are found in about 250 jewelers in Italy and abroad.

Two years later, here the great debut with his luxury jewelry brand. And she did not abandon completely the scientific teachings learned during the degree, given that his jewels have rigorous forms, with well-defined geometries. Of course, with some poetic license, to avoid excessive rigor.
Gold and diamonds are the most used elements and also determine a price range that goes from about 5,000 to 15,000 dollars, with a top of over 36,000 dollars for a necklace with diamonds for 6.86 carats trillion cut.

The thousand reflections of Henri Daussi’s cushion

/

History and diamonds by Henri Daussi, a name and a guarantee like the city in which it was born, Antwerp ♦ ︎
In Antwerp, diamonds are like baguettes in Paris or oranges in Sicily: an element that is part of the territory and tradition. And in the Belgian city, Henri Daussi Loots was born and grew up. He learned the art of cutting diamonds from his father, who in turn had learned it from his father. After years of experience, Henri became a great diamond master and worked for other diamond makers to cut only their most unique and significant diamonds.

Henri, given both a passion and an exceptional talent for cutting the diamond, was the master craftsman and pioneer. He designed a cutting wheel to cut diamonds more precisely and uniformly. He also innovated the classic cushion cut, with a variation that makes it between 10% and 30% larger and brighter. But above all, he became famous for heart-shaped diamonds: he was the first to succeed with it. From a small company with two employees, its DTC (Diamond Trading Company) has grown to 200 employees.
Competence and passion remained in the Loots family. Today the founder’s grandchildren, Jeff and Kristiaan Loots, lead the Henri Daussi, brand founded 60 years ago. The jewels of the Maison, it is easy to guess, they are all based on diamonds.

In the blue hour with Vhernier

//

Photographers define blue hours as those moments that precede nightfall and which offer a somewhat mysterious atmosphere. With greater romanticism, the Italian Maison Vhernier called Coucher du Soleil (sunset) its first collection to experiment with the use of bronze. The homage to the blue hour is, of course, also (but not limited to) marked by the color to which the collection refers. Coucher du soleil is characterized by the use of classic and uncommon materials. In addition, the jewelry is modular, composed of thin vertical elements in bronze dyed blue, thanks to a special process, and gold.

To the two combined metals is added, in some versions, the glow of diamonds, set in an order that seems random, but is not, as it is in the style of the Piedmontese Maison. The collection includes bracelets and band rings, sculpture earrings, even with generous volumes. The collection, in addition to the blue tone, also includes jewels with golden shades, always made with the same materials, but with diamonds in a brown version.

The K di Kuore jewels

Chores of K di Kuore: the jewels, basically, are evidence of the passion and affection of a person to the other. But this should not overshadow the beauty of the jewel. With this philosophy, 20 years ago he was born the Florentine K di Kuore, at the initiative of Giuliano Giannini. Objective: creating trendy jewelry. And immediately recognizable: Goal accomplished.

All products are handmade and, above all, have a design that can be recognized. The production process is an aspect to which Giannini holds much. On the other hand, he points out, the K di Kuore jewels could not be done in another way: there are no machines capable, for example, to roll the threads in pink gold and white to Kult line, with jewels inspired by art movement of Futurism. Or to work stones like amethyst, ruby and topaz, on dubbed mother pearl on rings of Color collection. Now K di Kuore jewelry are sold and appreciated around the world.

How to change the ring

/

Do you want to modify your engagement ring? Ideas and suggestions ♦ ︎

There are many reasons that can lead a woman to change or modify the engagement ring. If you are interested in changing your engagement ring, here are some useful tips that are worth knowing. In this article you will find the answers to your questions on how and when (and if) to change the ring you received at the time of the promise of marriage.

Recarlo, anello della collezione Blue Carpet indossato
Recarlo, anello della collezione Blue Carpet indossato

Usually, those who want to change the engagement ring have two reasons: the breakdown of the relationship with the boyfriend or husband (therefore: new life, new ring), or the desire to change the shape of the ring, which no longer likes (or maybe she never liked it). This is the case, for example, of the engagement rings that are part of the family inheritance. His grandmother might have liked the ring, and she gave it to you convinced that you would jump for joy. But you don’t like it at all. You may not have had the courage to say it right away, but now the time has come: so how do you change the shape of a ring?

Anello con diamante a taglio marquise
Anello con diamante a taglio marquise

Pay attention to the value

Before going ahead, you need to know one important thing: by removing the ring you have on your finger or in the drawer, its value could decrease a lot. For example, the single value of the diamond and the gold band of a solitaire, when they are separated, is less than the whole ring. So, if you want to disassemble a ring to sell the diamond, know that you will get a price lower than the value of the whole ring. At that point it is therefore more convenient to sell the ring as it is now and buy a new one. The same goes, even more, for period jewels: if they are broken down their value decreases a lot. If, on the other hand, a part of the jewel is damaged, the solution could be to look for a new setting (or a new stone) and reassemble the jewel.

Lavorazione di gioielleria

Increase the value

Of course, there is also the opposite aspect. Maybe you have a ring that has an inexpensive stone mounted and you want to replace it with a better gem, perhaps a beautiful diamond. Obviously in this case the value of the ring, after the change, will be greater than what you have now. But be careful to really choose the right stone: a thin metal circle may be too small to hold a large opal. Or, conversely, if the gold band is quite thick, a tiny diamond is in danger of disappearing.

Ring with diamond

If you want to change the diamond of a ring, or add one where it wasn’t there before, it is good that the stone you buy is accompanied by a gemological certificate that describes its quality and carat. If you do not have the certificate (and this is not good) you must obtain a report from a specialized laboratory: only in this way will you be able to know what the real value of the diamond is.

Read also: How to choose a diamond

If you have finally decided to modify your ring, at this point all that remains is to contact a jeweler to create a new ring, naturally asking what the cost will be first. However, you should go to a jeweler with clear ideas: knowing which shape, type and maximum cost to face is a good starting point. Not only that: if you do not have a jeweler in whom you have blind faith, it is better to ask for a quote from at least three different jewelers before making a choice.

Some ideas to transform your ring

1 If you have a ring with only one diamond (usually with a few fractions of a carat), you can ask to add two small and inexpensive ones to the sides: it will greatly increase the brightness of the jewel.

2 If you have a brilliant cut diamond you might consider turning it upside down, leaving the pointed part on the outside, perhaps surrounded by a crown of other small diamonds. But be careful that the visible surface of the stone does not decrease too much.

3 If the diamond is set on yellow gold, you could change and choose to combine it with white gold, or vice versa: the ring will have a completely different appearance.

4 A diamond also goes well with classic colored gems such as emeralds, rubies and sapphires. Two little touches of color can make all the difference.

Consult a jeweler

Before making the decision to modify your ring, consider a few things. That ring is also linked to a memory: if it is a moment that you want to erase from your memory, proceed without worrying. But if not, think twice before proceeding. If, on the other hand, you have any idea how you would like a new ring, talk to a trusted jeweler. Ask how much the type of stone (diamond or other gem) you want to use costs. First show you a similar one, of the same weight and size: you will avoid being disappointed when you go to collect the ring. Don’t forget to ask for the cost in advance. Finally, before entrusting the ring to the jeweler, take a picture of the jewel, from both sides. Make sure to illuminate it well and carefully preserve the image. If, after the work of the jeweler, something does not convince you, you could return to the starting ring. And, in any case, it will remind you of what your engagement ring was originally like.

//

Father’s day around the world and Amen’s gifts.

The collection uses different natural stones: aquamarine, green and orange aventurine and moonstone. Each stone is inspired by particular places. The orange aventurine recalls Petra, the surprising city in Jordan that was also the set of the film Raiders of the Lost Ark. The green aventurine, on the other hand, is an allusion to the jungle of the Amazon. Moonstone amulets, on the other hand, were born as a reference to the expanses of the New Mexico desert. The Azure amulets, on the other hand, are reminiscent of the Saline of Camargue, in France. In short, you can wear a little world tour.

Inlays, gems, contrasts: Retrouvaí’s vintage inspirations

/

A stone within another stone: the technique of inlaying with different materials is ancient and is the one adopted for many jewels by Kirsty Stone (a name, a destiny), Canadian designer of the Retrouvaí brand, based in Los Angeles. The designer moved to the United States shortly after graduation and co-founded an architectural firm with a friend, before choosing the jewelry. Perhaps also for this imprinting the geometries of the jewels are so precise. The name of the brand needs an explanation: it is a word inspired by the pronunciation of Retrovailles, a French term that indicates something that reconnects to the past. In this case the inlay technique.

But not only that: the designer has a penchant for vintage objects and her jewels, even if they have a modern shape, often allude to something that is distant in time, such as chevalier-style rings or pendants that look like cameos. For example, compass rings seem to indicate nostalgia for places elsewhere. Retrouvaí jewelry is often made with unusual stones. Like rhodochrosite, lapis lazuli and turquoise welcome different types of gems, such as morganite, and create a pleasant contrast. Often with a contrast between a matte and a transparent surface.

The Odyssey of Suciyan

/

The Turkish designer Arman Suciyan, who has worked extensively for Stephen Webster, has created a collection inspired by Homer’s Odyssey ♦ ︎

The Odyssey was written by Homer when the Greek cities dotted today’s Turkey. And it is in Istanbul that Arman Suciyan was born 46 years ago. And it is always in the largest city in Turkey that Suciyan wrote his Odyssey. Or, more precisely, the Odyssey collection has designed it and then made it in silver, gold bronze and precious stones. In fact, it is a collection of jewelry dedicated to the great ancient epic. But the jewels do not have anything ancient, because Arman Suciyan has lived a professional path not related to the Turkish tradition, even if as a boy he started as a goldsmith in the bazaar alongside Misak Toros, fourth generation of a Turkish Armenian family with a long tradition of jewelery.

A collaboration lasting until 2004. And after a few years spent in Milan, Arman returned to Istanbul in 2008, to devote himself completely to his brand. A work that, among other things, earned him the prestigious DeBeers Jewelry Design Award.

It is a bronze ennobled alloy, particularly suitable for use in the goldsmith, jewelery or costume jewelery industry. Developed with the expertise of the University of Padua, this alloy, according to the patent, “allows for an improvement in the characteristics and final results of the finished product”. The alloy is mainly composed of copper (over 90%), to which up to 8-9% tin is added: a metal that adds good mechanical characteristics and great resistance to corrosion. About 3%, on the other hand, is silver. The metal is then plated with 18-karat gold.

A jarretière at wrist

//

A small Italian jewelery brand that is inspired by a feminine accessory: the garter. Which turns into bracelets and elastic rings ♦ ︎

A brand was born as a tribute to an item of women’s clothing and, once, even masculine: the garter or, in French language, the Jarretière. The idea came in 1999 with two entrepreneurs from Brescia, Liliana Avallone, who in 2003 was even founded the Ordre des femme de la jarretière, with the aim of enhancing the image of women, and her husband Enzo Avallone. In reality, however, there are no jewels intended to wear the stockings, but bracelets and rings made of gold and inside a resilient system capable of adapting the jewel to the body of the wearer. But the curious name of the brand is not the only mark of distinction: a special chemical treatment of the material plasma 18-carat gold holds elastic inside a steel core of the golden modules.

In this way, the gold can also assume different colors from yellow and pink classic, such as blue and black, in addition to maintaining the elasticity. Another line of jewelry, instead, uses the ceramic, always with a treatment that makes the elastic piece to wear. Most of jarretière jewelry is destined to foreign markets (online), but are also found in Italy. By the way, the brand shows the motto of the Order of the Garter: Honi soit qui mal y pense, ie cursed be those who evil thinks. You are warned.

The rings of the British royals

/

Engagement rings of the protagonists of the British royal family. Those of Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle, Camilla and … ♦ ︎

The many fans of chronicles from the British royal family are preparing for a new wedding. After those of Prince Harry and Maghen Markle there were those of Eugenie, second child of Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, with Jack Brooksbank, then those of Beatrice of York with Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. Or of nobles linked in some way to the royal family, such as Lady Gabriella Windsor, daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, who married Thomas Kingston.

The father of the bride, Prince Michael of Kent, is the son of George, Duke of Kent and Navy of Greece. He is also the nephew of King George V, who reigned from 1910 until January 20, 1936. He is therefore the first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. In short, it is always part of the royal family, as evidenced by the fact that Lady Gabriella got married in the same place where the weddings of Meghan Markle and Princess Eugenia were celebrated (Kate Middleton and William instead said yes in the Abbey of Westminster).

As always, attention is also paid to everything around events of this type. For example, to the jewels that noble brides wear. Often the jewels worn by members of the royal family, in fact, reveal bonds and hierarchies, as well as being particularly valuable objects. In particular, the rings worn by girlfriends and brides of the British royal family all have a story to tell.

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge

Kate Middleton presented herself in public with the ring of engagement that belonged to Princess Diana: a way to emphasize also a leading role and an unconditional entry into the royal family. The ring has a 12 karat Ceylon oval blue sapphire and is surrounded by 14 diamonds. The gift was a symbolic act and also a decision on which Prince William has meditated: before offering it to the future bride it seems that he kept the ring in his pocket for three weeks while on vacation with Kate in Kenya. In short, it is certainly not an impulsive one.

Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex

Meghan’s engagement ring was designed by Prince Harry personally. The ring is of the trilogy type, with three diamonds: the center stone, larger, comes from Botswana, where the couple had spent their holidays together. Not secondary aspect: the other two diamonds belonged to the Princess Diana jewelry collection. Also in this case, in short, there is a clear connection with the family history.

Queen Elizabeth II

Like his nephew Harry, Prince Philip, husband of Elizabeth II, who passed away in 2021, also designed the engagement ring. This is a square diamond ring of approximately 3 carats, made for her more than 70 years ago. This is not an exceptional link, but for a reason: austerity after the Second War advised against excessive ostentation of wealth. The diamond had previously been set in a tiara that belonged to Philip’s mother.

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall

The second wife of Prince Charles (from February 2005), received a ring with five carat diamonds. In this case it is a family ring: it was built in 1920 and belonged to the Queen Mother. The central diamond is square cut and is surrounded by six baguette-cut diamonds.

Zara Phillips

Zara (Anne Elizabeth) Phillips, married to Mike Tindall, is the daughter of Princess Anne, sister of the Queen, and her first husband, Captain Mark Phillips. She is therefore the second granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth. For engagement Zara received a diamond solitaire ring set by Mike Tindall on a platinum band studded with small diamonds.

Princess Eugenia

Sarah Ferguson’s daughter sported a ring with sapphire padparadscha, one of the rarest varieties of stone. It is an oval sapphire surrounded by diamonds and set on a Welsh gold ring, perhaps a gift from the queen. Among other things, the ring resembles that of Eugenie’s mother, Sarah Ferguson, when she became engaged to Prince Andrew in 1986.

The engagement ring of the Duchess of York was a Burmese ruby surrounded by diamonds, designed by Prince Andrew. Which, however, has confessed to having been helped by jewelers in charge of making the ring.

Princess Diana

In 1981 Lady Diana’s engagement ring was the first tear to the royal protocol: it was chosen, in fact, from the catalog of Garrad, a London jeweler. The tradition, in fact, foresaw that members of the royal family did not wear jewels that could be bought by any citizen (obviously rich enough to be able to afford it).

On the Moon with Jaqueline Cullen

//

The Moon and the planets interpreted in Jaqueline Cullen’s jewels ♦ ︎

Art does not like middle ways. And not even designers like Jaqueline Cullen lull themselves into compromise. On the contrary, they take specific roads, either on one side or the other. Jaqueline Cullen, for example, had adopted black as the main color for her jewelry a year ago. And to follow this inspiration, she had used materials such as whitby jet (a kind of fossil wood) and black diamond. But art does not like the middle ground. The designer also took the opposite path: all white.

Instead of the whitby jet black, used for other jewels, Jaqueline chose white agate, in all its shades, from the milky color to that with a pale blue shade. Planets and satellites, in the photographs of the Hubble Space Telescope, are all dotted with craters. And in the jewels of the Galactica collection, the holes are transformed into small champagne-colored or ice-blue diamonds, which dot the surface. But not only. For her jewels, the designer also used variegated Botswana agate, a stone with infinite shades, or labradorite, again with small diamonds set, or iridescent spectrolite. All jewels are handmade in London, where the designer’s Maison is based.
