A ring by Reza towering at Christie’s auction

Question: did the evil covid-19, which blocked the world, also block the demand for luxury items? Looking at the result of Christie’s auctions in Geneva, postponed in July because of the pandemic, it would seem not. Starting from the success reserved for the sale of jewelry. In short, buying (and selling) very precious jewels still seems like a good investment. Here, however, is the result of the auctions.

Christie’s sales in Geneva achieved a combined total of $ 57.9 million for 195 jewels, 226 watches and 819 fine wines, with a combined sale of 81%. Bidders, reports the British auction house, have registered from 42 countries, on six continents. And the highest price lot was an elegant blue and colorless Reza diamond ring, sold for $ 9.3 million in the sale of Magnificent Jewels.

Our 102nd week of sales in Geneva took place under extraordinary circumstances with social distancing, not just at the pre-sale exhibition but also at all three live auctions. Nevertheless, collectors showed great resilience and confidence as they bid and bought all week long, starting with the Cartier clocks to fine wrist watches, rare wines to superb gems. The star of the week was a twin stone blue and white diamond ring by Parisian jeweler, Reza, which achieved $ 9.2m after spirited bidding between several telephones. A 100ct perfect D color diamond was purchased by Moussaieff jewelers who continue to acquire the rare and unusual gems of the world.

As for jewelry, the auction totaled $ 42.5 million, 88% in value and 80% per lot. Colored and colorless diamonds have remained the main attraction. And they were not only sold by telephone, but also in the hall, limited to one hundred visitors. In addition to the Reza diamond ring, a large 100.85 carat D-colored diamond, IF diamond, sold for $ 6 million to Moussaieff.
Additionally, part of the sale were a pair of magical aquamarine cabochons and single-cut diamond earrings by Margaret Jewels, a Geneva-based private jeweler, which were sold for the benefit of the Swiss Children’s Foundation. The sum of the earrings will be donated in its entirety for the benefit of the foundation’s mission to help children and young people around the world.

Christie’s has been the Jewels market leader for 26 years. Our commitment to excellence combined with our strong personal relationships has built our reputation, which in turn has created trust; the most important factor for clients when buying at auction, might it be live or online. The Geneva sale season, which operated under strict sanitary guidelines, including reduced attendance in the auction room, saw strong participation of buyers from 42 countries over the phone and online. With a combined sale result of CHF 54.6 million and a sell-through rate of 81%, we are now looking forward to London and New York to conclude the July Luxury Sales month, which started in Hong Kong.

Reza al Tefaf’s jewels

///

Maison Reza’s fine jewelery arrives at Tefaf in New York ♦

It is not uncommon for jewelers to have lives or adventurous stories behind them. This is especially true for the great jewelery makers from the East or the Middle East. And it is also the case of Alexandre Reza, who died in Paris in 2016 at 94, but with a story worthy of a novel. Suffice it to say that he was considered the greatest collector of gems of modern times, before becoming a jeweler. And from 1 to 5 November the jewels of the Maison that he founded can be seen at the New York edition of Tefaf, the great exhibition dedicated to objects of art, antiquities and luxury and collectible jewels. Today the Maison is run by the founder’s son, Olivier, at the Place Vendôme site.

Alexandre Reza was born in 1922 in Moscow, son of a jeweler. Like other Russian families, after the October Revolution the Rezas moved to France, first to Nice and then to Paris. He began his career as a diamond expert, traveling a lot to find every stone. Alexandre Reza has also supplied gems to jewelry brands such as Boucheron, Bulgari, Cartier, Chaumet, Harry Winston, Louis Gérard and Van Cleef & Arpels. And as has happened to many other merchants and gemstone experts, at one point he decided to turn himself into a jeweler. But of gram class: only high jewelry with rare diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires. According to the Sotheby’s auction house, “movement, lightness, composition and harmony are the key words of his works”.

But mishaps were not missed: in 1994 armed thieves stole gems worth about $ 21 million in the jeweler’s salon in Paris. On the other hand, in May 2010 Sotheby’s sold a fancy 5.02 carat blue fancy diamond set in a toi-et-moi ring next to a 5.42-carat white diamond of 6.3 million dollars, setting a record price for a jewel of Reza. Reza, the high jewelery goes online

The Parisian Maison Reza offers her pieces of jewelery also online. But only for a month ♦ ︎
The news, in some ways, marks an era. For the first time Reza, High Jewelry Maison, displays its collections in a trunk show outside the Parisian atelier in Place Vendôme. Reza, in fact, exposes her pieces of excellent bill only in her own boutique or in very rare, selected opportunities such as Tefaf. Now, however, he arrives from Moda Operandi, from 25 October to 25 November. For this occasion Reza has decided to present 23 pieces (can be seen by appointment) in showroom and another 36 pieces on the online store. They are pieces of high jewelery, with precious materials and consequent prices. For example, Arlequin’s earrings with emeralds and diamonds cost $ 259,000. The earrings with turquoise and diamonds are $ 59,800. In short, even the jewelery adapts to the times and can be bought online. Nothing surprising, after all. Lavinia Andorno

Wallace Chan and friends at Tefaf

The best pieces of jewelry at Tefaf New York: there is also a new ring by Wallace Chan.
Tefaf, the most important event dedicated to antiques, but not only, arrives in New York. Established in Maastricht in 1988, the fair has been so successful that it was also exported to New York, where it even two editions, in May and in October (22-26). Although the focus is centered on paintings, sculptures and antique furniture, there are prestigious exhibitors offering antique and contemporary jewelry. And among the great jewels to see (you can observe something this page), there are those of Wallace Chan, the first Chinese designer to be invited to this prestigious art fair. Chan is a master not only in the composition of the different elements, but also in the processing of stones, with innovative cuts and often patients incisions on the surface. The novelty is called the Ring of Night, which has at its center a large amethyst for over 116 carats. Although at first glance it seems a rather simple ring, it’s actually surprisingly built without griffes to hold the stone. It is the hand of the master. Next to this piece out of the ordinary, and it’s not the only Wallace Chan that will be in exhibition, Tefaf also houses other pieces of great value, as the earrings by Reza to the Camellia brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels.
