Santi, Indian high jewelry has distant roots

A jeweler who represents the tenth generation of a family devoted to gems and jewels. It is Krishna Choudhary, an Indian moved to London, who has a very long history behind him. The high jewelery of his brand, Santi, is now the subject of an exhibition-sale organized by the London auction house Phillips. The exhibition, from 19 to 23 September at Phillips’s Berkeley Square galleries, is organized with the assistance of Vivienne Becker, a jewelery historian who has become a sort of hallmark. The exhibition presents the creations of Saints, but also jewels and historical objects from the Mughal era. The roots of Krishna Choudhary, in fact, go back to Rajasthan.

Through this exhibition I hope to honor my legacy and share with visitors some of the magic that fuels my contemporary works. From historical gemstones of extraordinary beauty or Mughal motifs seen in Indian art, architecture and jewelry, all of these serve as inspiration for my contemporary jewelry, within which I try to marry the rarest gems and the most beautiful and exquisite crafts available today.

The Choudhary family was active as bankers and jewelers in 1727, at the founding of the new city of Jaipur by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amer in western India, who settled in the city of Jaipur in the 18th century. The maharaja invited the best craftsmen and craftsmen from all over India. Jaipur, where the Choudhary Haveli (the family palace) is located, is a center still famous today for jewelry and gem cutting. The exhibition and sale includes about forty jewels made in the last four years, some of which were created specifically for this occasion.

Her new collection is called Secrets, but Ming Lampson‘s creativity has remained in the open. The London-based designer presented three of the jewels from the Secrets collection at the Phillips Woman to Woman exhibition-sale. With a pair of diamond grange earrings that, according to the creative jeweler, are reminiscent of the beaded curtains she saw everywhere in her youth in Asia. And that they can hide who knows what secrets. Another pieces in the collection are earrings with pink sapphires and rubies on platinum and a ring with a kite-cut diamond, on gold and enamel. The jewels are a new testament to Ming’s creative freshness, which is perhaps also a legacy of her particular biography.

Born in Sydney, Ming grew up in Hong Kong, then moved to London as an adult. About 20 years ago she then went to Jaipur, the Indian kingdom of precious stones, where she worked as an apprentice to a goldsmith and worked with gem dealers. Back in London, she studied jewelry design, grading diamonds, stones and pearls colored with Gia. She founded her small and refined Maison of hers, creating unique pieces that have attracted the attention of jewelry lovers.

Online sales of jewelery, even high-end ones, are no longer a novelty. Even the historic Phillips auction house (founded in London by Harry Phillips in 1796) is adapting to this new way of selling jewelry. Her online boutique has a name: Flawless, a term that is usually associated with the best quality diamonds. Although the initiative is from an auction house, Phillips’ virtual platform sells jewelry at a predetermined price.

The debut is with a series of jewels created ad hoc by the British designer Shaun Leane, with whom he has been collaborating for 21 years. The proposed collection includes 12 significant pieces from Leane’s archive and previously unavailable, with a focus on the designer’s most iconic examples. For example, with a series of rings with colored stones, one of which with a large sapphire of 10.53 carats, or with the earrings with diamonds in the shape of a saber. Sharp angles together with soft curves are the elements that characterize Shaun Leane’s jewels, also for this series of jewels.
