Oscar Heyman

Oscar Heyman, a century of luxury

High jewelry with a long and hard-working history behind it. It is that of Oscar Heyman & Brothers, an American company which has been producing since 1912 high-end jewelry, specializing in particular in pieces with colored gems. But many jewelers in the States call it by another name: The Jewelers’ Jeweler (the jeweler of jewelers), which is the name of a book published by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. And this is because Oscar Heyman mainly sells through other jewelers.

As mentioned, the history of the Maison is long and has its roots in the distant Ukraine. Oscar, Nathan and Harry Heyman founded the company in 1912 in New York City, but after an apprenticeship in a laboratory in Kharkiv, Ukraine, before emigrating to the United States. They were later joined by their three younger brothers, George, William and Louis, and by their two sisters, Frances and Lena.

This is the story of Oscar Heyman, which is now managed by the second and third generation of the family: Adam C. Heyman (president), Thomas Heyman (vice president and treasurer) and Lewis Heyman (vice president and secretary). Office and manufacturing facilities remained in New York on Madison Avenue. In fact, the Heymans say they are very fond of the city. In addition to selling jewelry with its own brand, the company also works on behalf of third parties. For example, up until the time the Richemont Group acquired a majority stake, Oscar Heyman produced invisible jewelry made in New York for Van Cleef & Arpels from 1939 to 2001, but he also worked for Tiffany and, in the past, also for Cartier.

Winter holiday jewelry by Oscar Heyman

Oscar Heyman, one of luxury symbols in the American jewelry, has made a collection dedicated to the winter holidays
The Santa Claus myth comes from a real person: St. Nicholas, bishop of Myra (now called Demre and is a city of Turkey). According to legend, St. Nicholas found and revived five children, which were been kidnapped and killed by an innkeeper. For this prodigy is considered the protector saint of children. St. Nicholas from Turkey went in Italy, in Bari (where he is buried) and from South of Italy the myth has slowly spread to the West, and then transformed in the nineteenth century in an old man, fat and with a white beard, who brings gifts to children. Santa Claus as we know it today, however, is especially an invention of Coca Cola, which in the thirties has been promoting that image, with the aim to drink a cold drink even in winter.

The two myths, that of the carbonated beverage and the dispenser of gifts, have established themselves each other, becoming two American icons. So it is not strange that Oscar Heyman (we talked about here) one of the most famous jewelers in stars and stripes, symbol of luxury and of traditional America, has dedicated to the symbols of the Christmas holidays a small, fine collection. Of course, if Santa we might give one of these jewels would not be a bad idea…

Oscar Heyman, shadow of luxury

A century in the shadow of luxury: as it could be defined as the story of Oscar Heyman, one of the great designers of the twentieth century. Her jewelry, which continue to shine the eyes of the admirers, they were often mistaken for others. For years, in fact, the jewelry created by Oscar Heyman & Brothers have been made on behalf of large houses like Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany & Co, Shreve, Crump & Low, Bailey, Marcus & Co. The story of Oscar Heyman He starts in Latvia, in the early twentieth century. The family worked, apparently, for the Russian Faberge, famous Maison for its elaborate jewelry. In 1912 Oscar and brothers moved to New York, with a commitment: to pass on through generations their skills. A skill that, as mentioned, has been appreciated by the biggest names in jewelery. When asked if this was not depressing anonymity, one of the brothers, George Heyman, he responded: “We took care of our customers, the retailers. We were in the back room. ” But the story did not end here, because Oscar Heyman has also begun to produce jewelry with his brand, and still continues. Are pieces of luxury, from several thousand dollars (or Euros) each. At the third generation, the Heymans continue to do everything yourself: drawings, metal alloys, cutting, embedding, polishing. A way of working is not very usual in the United States. But that’s just the way to make jewelry like the ones you see on this page. Lavinia Andorno
