All about black gold

At one time, black gold meant oil. Now a little less. On the other hand many jewelers have started and make black gold jewelry. But gold isn’t yellow? So how does it turn into black gold? If you want to know what black gold is and how it is obtained, but also how to clean black gold, you are going to satisfied.

In nature, gold is only yellow. Indeed, intense yellow. All the other colors that you can find in a jewel, such as the most common white and pink gold, are the result of particular processes of gold, almost always fusing the yellow metal with others such as silver or copper. Even black gold is the result of particular processes that transform the natural color of the metal. I mean, don’t think there is a black gold mine. So how do you get black gold?

How black gold is made

First method. The most used way is plating with galvanic method. It is the same method that is used for other types of plating: a machine deposits tiny particles of another material on the jewel that deposits like a second skin on the original metal thanks to electrolysis. In this case, rhodium or ruthenium is used. The advantage of this system is that it is fast, inexpensive and has a bright metal. The weak point is that, as in all plating processes, care must be taken not to scratch the metal surface in order not to eliminate the surface layer. Over time, moreover, this superficial part could become opaque and fragile. But it does not always happen, it also depends on the use that is made of the jewel.

Second method. As mentioned at the beginning, gold with a color other than yellow is normally obtained by combining different metals. In the case of black gold, for example, cobalt is often used, which is added to the extent of about 25%. Cobalt is often used to blacken metals, for example for work tools, such as drill bits. The electroplating procedure we have just described is also often used. The advantage: with gold combined in alloy with cobalt there are no scratching problems. On the other hand, if you suffer from a nickel allergy you may also have some problems with cobalt, such as irritating dermatitis.

Antonini, ring in black rhodium-plated gold, diamonds and pearl

Third method. Gold does not oxidize like silver, which easily blackens. On the other hand, it can change color if subjected to a powerful laser energy beam. It is not a simple procedure to carry out, because it requires machines powerful enough to intervene on the molecular structure of the metal. So, is this how you get black gold? Yes and no. In theory, jewelry could be made with gold subjected to a laser treatment, but unfortunately it is rather complicated and expensive. Hence, your black gold jewelry is almost certainly not the result of laser treatment.

How many carats does black gold have?

It depends. As with yellow, white or pink gold, the carats depend on the amount of yellow gold used. If the jewel uses the black gold that is obtained in alloy with cobalt, it will have 18 carats if the yellow metal is present for 75%, while if it is 14 carats it means that the percentage drops to 58.3%. It is an aspect to be taken into account in case you want to resell the jewel: it will be evaluated for the percentage of actual gold it contains.

How to clean black gold

Gold is a resistant metal and, especially if it is obtained in alloy with other metals, it does not require special care. You should always avoid putting the jewelry in contact with acid products and, if in contact with the skin, perhaps with products such as creams and cosmetics, it is necessary to regularly maintain cleaning. Particular attention, however, is necessary for jewels obtained with a galvanic process, which are more delicate. To clean the black gold jewelry just a cup of warm water with a couple of drops of liquid soap is enough. After leaving the jewels to soak for about ten minutes, clean them with a toothbrush with soft bristles (no toothpicks or the like to remove dirt). Rinse and dry gently with a cotton cloth. Of course, if the jewel also has pearls or delicate stones (such as opal), caution must be greater.

The secrets of black gold

How do you transform gold, which is yellow in nature, into a black metal? This is how black gold is obtained and how to clean it ♦︎

Gold in nature is yellow. But for some time now, jewelry has also loved to use gold with different colors. The main ones, in addition to the natural color, are the rose gold and white gold alloy. But that’s not all: there are many colors of gold, which depend on the metals with which it is melted. One of the main ones is the black, or blackened color.

Ortaea, collezione Imperium, anello in oro nero, diamanti bianchi e rubini

Among the colors used for gold there is also black. It is almost a paradox, because gold, unlike silver or iron, does not oxidize in contact with air. But the idea of wearing black gold appeals to many women and to many designers who make jewelry with this dark shade of metal.

But not all black gold is the equal. To transform yellow gold into dark metal there are several methods. This also means a different duration or strength of the gold color.

Anello per lo zodiaco cinese, Cavallo
Anello in oro nero per lo zodiaco cinese, Cavallo

The first way is to create a patina by applying compounds containing sulfur and oxygen or ruthenium.
Another system is to proceed with a chemical deposition with steam: it is obtained with the use of amorphous plasma and carbon. Finally, gold can be induced by artificial oxidation with an alloy of cobalt or chromium, usually at 25%. At this point this alloy is brought to a high temperature until a black black oxide layer is formed.

High tech method

The same effect is obtained by combining gold in alloy with copper, iron or titanium or with a mix of three different metals, for example 75% gold, 15% cobalt, 10% chrome. However, by changing metal, the dark shade of gold can tend to brown or green.

On the other hand, there is an ultra-technological treatment, which involves the creation of nanostructures on the surface, but it is rarer. This is how it is obtained: a laser pulse hits the gold for the duration of 1 millionth of a billionth of a second. A minimal duration, which however deforms the surface of the metal creating an area that absorbs practically all the light, which thus appears as black. But it is a system hardly used in jewelry.

How to clean the black gold

Cleaning a jewel in black gold is simple: just immerse it in a bowl with a little warm water and a few drops of liquid soap. After about ten minutes, the jewel can be cleaned with the help of a soft-bristled toothbrush. Rub carefully, especially if gold is plated: the surface may be damaged. Finally, rinse. It’s better to avoid stress on jewels with particularly delicate stones, such as the opal, or pearls.

Ioanna Souflia, jewels for Olympus

Marble, architecture, gold and precious stones: it is the mix of the Greek designer Ioanna Souflia ♦

Thasos marble for Symbiosis, the first collection by Ioanna Souflia, designer born and raised in Athens and moved to London to study at Central Saint Martins. After graduation the debut, a tribute to her origins that combines a modern aesthetic with traditional crafts. In fact, to sculpt the material extracted from the Greek island mine required hours of fabrication. Each piece is hand carved, set on blackened gold mirror and embellished with diamonds blacks and grays. And then, the jewels with gray Bardiglio Imperiale Italian marble and 14 carat rose gold for the Adieu collection.

Anello della collezione Adieu
Anello della collezione Adieu

The graphic patterns are those of classical, curves resemble swirls of Ionic capitals, yet the design is very modern. Probably because it seems the contemporary version of the stylized interpretation that Art Deco gave to vases and sculptures of ancient Greece. Or because among the smooth surfaces there is no conflict, but rather, the whiteness of the stone and the luster of metal  enhance the structured crisp lines. Anyway, they give these jewels an elegant style and even vaguely solemn. She defines her style maxi minimalism, as in the case of the Blueprints collection, “a visual documentation of the metropolitan skies through the grid of the architectural presence”. G.N.

Anil Arjandas, followers and earrings

Bracelets, rings and earrings by Anil Arjandas, designer of Indian origin based in Dubai ♦

Indian origin, flagship store in Dubai: Anil Arjandas has found his way into the world of jewelry thanks to some choices, such as using black gold, brown and black diamonds, already in his first collection, in 2000. His popularity, a to be honest, it is also due to Instagram, in which he appears in first person, also thanks to his model appearance: he has become a star with 951,000 followers (for now). In jewelry, in particular, he established himself with the production of bracelets, both for women and for men, so much so that he then expanded the production to include watches as well. But not only that: his jewels are often made with semi-precious colored stones, such as chrysoprase, agate, but also with ruby root.

In 2016 Arjandas renewed the brand, with the addition of bracelets, rings and earrings in 18-karat white gold and white diamonds to its catalog. But his specialty remains stones with unusual cuts and black gold, as in the collection which includes a series of earrings designed to be a gift for special occasions. The teardrop, shuttle or irregular surfaces are repeated even for three, in the case of some pendants.

Yossi Harari’s black gold

Gold does not oxidize. And it is also for this reason that the yellow metal has been elected, over the centuries, as the king of materials for jewelry. But Yossi Harari, a Tel Aviv jeweler, has found a way to change this status. Harari, in fact, invented Gilver, an alloy that makes gold black, oxidized. It must be said that Yossi Harari uses pure 24 carat gold for his jewels. A rather rare choice, because 24 karat gold is also much more malleable. And it is also for this reason that it is less used for jewelry with stones: gold can easily deform and the gem is lost.

Anello con oro ossidato e rubini

So when the Israeli jeweler decided to set rose-cut diamonds, as was used in the Ottoman Empire or in the Victorian period, he came up with Gilver. It is an alloy composed of 24 carat gold and oxidized silver, just enough to change the color of the yellow metal. Obviously the alloy of gold and silver is nothing new, but the mix with the oxidized metal makes Gilver different from many others.

The jeweler is an innovator and his jewels bear the trace of his life path, between Istanbul (where he was born), Israel and Switzerland. The grandfather collector of art and antiquities and the jewelry-loving grandmother influenced the imprinting of the personality. His jewels are appreciated by numerous American celebrities, a country where Yossi Harari has numerous distributors of his jewels.

The 9 colors of gold

Do you know why gold can have different colors? It can be white, yellow, pink, but also blue or purple. Learn about the colors of gold, even those that cause allergies ♦

It’s easy to say gold. The metal most used in luxury jewelry, considered the most precious asset for centuries, kept in ingots in bank vaults, actually has many faces. Because since it was used to make rings and necklaces, bracelets and earrings, gold has undergone several transformations. First of all, it can be more or less pure.

When a piece of jewelry is 100% gold it has 24 karats, while if it is 75% it is 18 karat. The remaining 25% is made up of other metals.

Nanis 18kt gold and diamond convertible bracelet. Hand engraved using a burin

A percentage of 58% indicates a 14-karat alloy and, finally, when only 38% of gold remains, you have 9 karats. Furthermore, when it is alloyed with other metals, gold can change color, depending on the type of metal that is added. Everyone knows the three main shades: yellow, white and pink gold, colors that can be more or less intense. In reality, many jewelers use different percentages, which also give the gold completely different shades. In the diagram on this page we have summarized the main combinations that arise from the union of gold with other metals, in particular silver and copper.

In nature, in fact, gold has an intense yellow color, tending to orange, and is a very soft metal, which is easily deformed (1 gram can be transformed into a sheet of 1 square meter).

Anelli in oro giallo, rosa e brunito
Rings in yellow, pink and burnished gold

1 Yellow gold
The more intense yellow, the purer it is, as found in nature. The 99% pure gold is 24 carat and is exclusively deep yellow. Yellow gold is also the most used in jewelry. There are countries, such as India, which prefer gold in this color which is its natural hue. Yellow gold can also be of a less intense color, especially when alloyed with silver. Obviously the yellow gold with fewer carats, that is in alloy with other metals, has a more easily less intense color.

2 White Gold
It is an alloy with a white metal. When it comes to old jewels, it is often nickel (which however can cause allergies, on average to one in eight people), or manganese, palladium, but also silver. The alloy of gold and nickel is highly valued in jewelry because it makes the metal more durable for rings and brooches. On the other hand, gold with palladium is softer and makes setting stones easier. White gold is often not perfectly white, but has shades of yellow, brown or pink.

3 and 4 Pink gold and red
It is an alloy that uses copper. It was very popular in Russia in the nineteenth century and has come back into vogue in recent years. The color difference between red and pink shades depends on the copper content. For example, a 18-carat gold red uses 75% gold and 25% copper. A 18K rose gold 75% gold, 20% copper and 5% silver. Some even add up to 15% zinc to give a dark yellow hue.

5 Green gold

Green gold was already known in ancient times: this shade is obtained by adding silver. The color of the metal with this alloy is greenish-yellow, sometimes also obtained with cadmium, a metal which, however, can cause allergies. The light green hue is obtained with an alloy of 75% gold, 23% copper, 2% cadmium. The more intense green color has instead 75% gold, 15% silver, 6% copper and 4% cadmium.

6 Gray Gold
The gray color is especially used for jewelry with a modern design. This color is obtained with a mix of yellow gold and palladium or silver, manganese and copper. If the other metals are added in minimal quantities, the color is closest to that of white gold.

Anello in oro grigio e diamante di Niessing

7 Purple Gold
Violet or purple gold is obtained from an alloy that includes a particular type of aluminum. But purple gold is more fragile than other gold alloys and for this reason it is not often used: a sharp blow could cause the metal and, therefore, the jewel to shatter. Often purple gold is used only for small details of the jewels, together with gold (more robust) with other colors.

Jens Hansen, Replica ring, in oro rosa violetto

8 Blue gold
It is used rather rarely, but it is undoubtedly surprising. The gold of this color is obtained with an alloy with two metals little used in jewelry: alongside the yellow metal (46%), in fact, gallium or indium are added. in case, before buying it make sure you do not have allergies to these metals.

Anello in oro blu 14 carati con zircone
14K blue gold ring with zircon

9 Black gold
It can be produced with various methods: by electroplating, with a rhodium or ruthenium patina. Or with a coating that uses sulfur and oxygen or with a forced oxidation by chromium or cobalt. More recently, black gold has been created by creating nanostructures on the surface and laser treatment. It is a high-impact color, often used by jewelers over the past decade.

In this graphic scheme taken from Wikipedia you can see the mix of metals that add a hue of color to gold. They range from the very deep pink, which has more copper (boulder corner on the right) to the white one, usually obtained by adding silver. The top tip of the triangle instead tends to yellow.

Jewels for Halloween

Some examples of perfect jewels for Halloween: all in shades of black ♦ ︎

From Rome to New York, from London to Berlin: once a year Halloween heats a whole night. The ancient day dedicated to the dead, a tradition that originated in ancient Celtic rituals, has turned into a party in the dark style. Ghosts, zombies, skeletons and vampires are the protagonists of the events. In short, as happens at carnival, often disguises are required to those who want to participate in theme parties.

That’s why you need the right jewels for Halloween evening.

Anello in oro annerito e diamanti neri, al centro onice

But what to choose for the evening of October 31? The style of the evening indicates a preference for black and white jewelry. More black than white, if possible. Black diamonds are the most suitable stone, but also the onyx fits well. Always black is the jet, very used in the Victorian era. It is not a true mineral, but has a plant origin. In fact, it is a variety of bright black lignite. It is used in jewelry for rings, earrings, bracelets. Through a brushing and cleaning system it acquires a brilliance that does not diminish over time. Black spinels are more rare.
Do not forget, moreover, that there is also burnished silver and even gold, when it is finished with ruthenium, takes on an almost black color. Here are some examples of jewels that adapt well to the theme of the evening. Lavinia Andorno

Carla Amorim’s Luz

Brazil’s light proposed through the jewelry of Luz collection by Carla Amorim ♦ ︎
Brazil is an immense country with great spaces. And with breathtaking views. But it is also a country that has an intense light that is reflected on the Amazon’s woods, Sertao plains, as well as among the skyscrapers of St. Paul. And in Brazil’s light, Brazilian designer Carla Amorim devotes a collection of jewels. It’s called Luz the collection with earrings, bracelets, necklaces that does not differ from the historical style of the brand. The jewels are gold, so gold, in four different colors: in addition to the classic yellow, white and pink, it adds a dark tint. Black gold has a obscure feature that recalls light, but that of the evening. In addition to the noble metal, the real protagonist of the Luz collection, Carla Amorim has used diamonds and, in a few pieces, emeralds, pearls and tanzanites. Throughout the collection is made up of 14 different jewels, presented in the different colors of gold. Giulia Netrese

Sutra: the new Houston Gothic

Chicly gothic, so Arpita Navlakha, designer and founder of Sutra, the brand that also Michelle Obama likes ((https://gioiellis.com/gli-orecchini-di-michelle/), defines her jewelry. Of course, with all that gold black setting in which they are embedded large and colored stones, molded like snakes, feathers, wings and other complicated shapes, perhaps a little gothic really are. No doubt are bold, but the result reflects a sophisticated opulence that has nothing of the dark symbolism of fairy tales. Indeed, cascading earrings, intricate rings and necklaces that lay gracefully on the décolleté, included studded bracelets with exotic stones, are meant for a confident, stylish, the quintessential of the modern woman, says the Huston based designer. In short, these pieces are as multi-faceted as the women who wear them. Here pictures and dollar prices of the latest collection. Monica Battistoni
