Nicholas Lieou

Incredible Mr. Lieou

Mr. Lieou is one of the most innovative designers of the moment (and of the coming years) ♦ ︎

He is one of the most interesting and innovative designers. And it is easy to bet that it will be a point of reference for the new generation of jewelers, which now faces the highest level. Not only that: Mr. Lieou also represents, in a certain sense, the new face of the world, with its mixture of cultures, ethnicities and experiences. Born in Hong Kong, Nicholas Lieou was educated in Germany, Switzerland, Singapore and San Francisco. And it’s a perfect mix of aesthetic without boundaries, which adds up his experiences in New York and London, where he graduated from the Royal College of Art.

Lieou debuts in 2019 with its Maison. But his activity started years ago: he worked for brands like Louis Vuitton, Georg Jensen and Shanghai Tang, before being appointed, in 2015, as Director of design for high jewelry and custom design by Tiffany. An incredible, fast, exceptional career. But it was not enough for Mr. Lieou’s skills, which has debuted at the recent GemGèneve with his work. Very original, very creative, very remarkable.

As you can see from these images, it is truly jewelry without borders, with a bold technique that uses titanium, gold, diamonds, precious stones. There is no trace of orientalism: the designer’s Chinese roots are rather fused in a style that leads minimalism to expand like an erupting volcano, between French baroque and Rococo. It is no coincidence that he presented two lines of jewelry: Minimalist and Maximalist. Write down the name of Mr. Lieou on your diary.

Super sapphire Royal Blue at Sotheby’s auction

While the West zigzags in an attempt to avoid coronavirus blockages, in the East a climate of normality is returning. It is no coincidence that the sales of luxury goods have restarted, as evidenced by the auctions of Magnificent Jewels. Sotheby’s after announcing the sale in a single lot of a 102.39 carat D Color Flawless Oval cut diamond, with the unreserved offer formula, on 7 October offers another rarity in the mythical world of 100 carat stones: one 118.88 carat unheated Royal Blue Burmese sapphire. This is the largest Royal Blue Burmese sapphire offered by Sotheby’s in the past two decades. The gem estimate has not been given, but it is for sure at six zeros.

In the same auction it is also interesting to observe the interest in jewels of two avant-garde designers: the Forms brand, which features a spectacular Burmese ruby, and Nicholas Lieou, virtuoso of pearls.

We are excited to present another exceptional season of Magnificent Jewels, and offer some of the world’s finest gemstones – a 118.88 carat Burmese sapphire, one of the largest Burmese sapphire ever offered at Sotheby’s, and a 6.41 carat Unheated Burmese ‘Pigeon’s Blood’ ruby ring designed and mounted by FORMS, sourced from important private collections. The jewellery market has proven to be highly resilient, with our clients in Asia eyeing the best quality jewels on offer. This auction is distinguished by invaluable treasures that will surely dazzle collectors across the region and beyond.

11 designers for GemGenève

The 11 independent jewelers who will participate in the Designer Vivarium, at GemGenève ♦ ︎

It is called Designer Vivarium: a name that recalls a space dedicated to a species cataloged by the natural sciences, but which is instead an area of GemGenève for independent jewelers. And so, yes, the independent designers are a strange species, even if unknown to the heirs of Darwin. The fair, in its second edition, will be held from 9 to 12 May at the Geneva Palaexpo. And, like last year, it will reserve an area for small innovative brands: a space that has been at the center of visitors’ interest. The Designer Vivarium was curated by the jewelery expert Vivienne Becker, and has been expanded to include more designers. Here are the 11 brands that will exhibit their jewelry at GemGenève 20198.

Nicholas Lieou
Born and raised in Hong Kong, he studied in Europe, taking a masters degree in London at the prestigious Royal College of Art, before working for major jewelers in London and New York. He is a cerebral and passionate designer, who mixes a scholarly approach with art and imagination to revitalize the classicism of high jewelery. For example, in jewelry inspired by the myth of Daedalus, with diamonds in the shape of stylized wings.
