Feeling of the tropics with Beck Jewels

/

The island of Curaçao (and surrounding area) was a Dutch colony in the Caribbean until 1954. But it is best known as a tourist resort, known as a diving and diving paradise. It is also the place where Rebecca Zeijdel-Paz was born, a designer who in New York, in the Williamsburg neighborhood, founded a Beck Jewels. In addition to a hammock hanging in her living room, Rebecca Zeijdel-Paz preserves the shades of the island’s bright colors in her work. Beaches and houses in Dutch style, but painted with Caribbean joy are transformed into jewels which, for example, are called Scuba, Grote (a town in Curaçao) or Larkò, from the name of a tropical shell.

Rebecca Zeijdel-Paz, however, also brings her studies in Florence to her jewels, where she learned to appreciate the classic forms of jewelery, which led her to found the Beck Jewels brand in 2008, after an apprenticeship with Carolina Herrera in New York. The silver plated jewelry made with Swarovski crystals, in 2021 gave way to pieces in 14 or 18 karat gold, diamonds, topazes or tourmalines. Merit, so to speak, of the reflections during the covid lockdowns. A particularly heavy constraint for a woman who grew up between the beaches and the sea of the tropics, but which led Rebecca towards a new frontier.

Italian name, inscriptions in Latin and in Italian on the jewels. But Erica Molinari is American, she works in New York and has competed in the Olympic sledding team with stars and stripes at the editions of Calgary (Canada) and Albertville (France). After sporting activity, after a rather long period of reflection, at the age of 40 Erica Molinari enrolled in a jewelry course and then became an apprentice. The jewelry is made of 18K gold, sterling silver, oxidized silver, often with colored gemstones or diamonds, enamel. All of her pieces, from start to completion, are made in the New York studio. The style recalls the Gothic, but also the Renaissance and the Victorian period. Often the medals and the pendants carry an inscription: simple words, such as confianza (confidence), or phrases like Non ti scordar di me (Don’t forget me), on the back of a skull that has two diamonds instead of eyes. Juno Diamond becomes Claire G for $ 13 million

Juno Diamond, a 101.41 carat D-color pear-shaped stone, internally flawless, was sold in New York at Sotheby’s for 13 million dollars. The result places the stone among the highest prices ever achieved for a D, Flawless or Internally Flawless color diamond of over 100 carats at auction. The diamond was bought by telephone from a private collector in Asia. As often happens, the buyer changed the name of the gem, which is now called Claire G Diamond, as he dedicates to his wife, probably arousing no small amount of envy.

The Claire G Diamond was the star lot in the Magnificent Jewels sale, which totaled $ 52 million. Along with this week’s Fine Jewels sale, Sotheby’s World Jewelery auctions exceeded $ 230 million, a 14% increase over the same period in 2021.

We are thrilled to see this exceptional diamond achieve such a strong result, confirming that there is continued demand from collectors at the highest levels of the market. This diamond has captivated customers around the world on our long travels this spring, but it has been a special privilege to offer it at our global headquarters, where it now ranks among the top five jewels sold in Sotheby’s New York sales room. . Including today’s result, only five pear-shaped perfect diamonds weighing over 100 carats were sold at auction, including four at Sotheby’s.

The Claire G Diamond has obtained superlative gradations both in color (D Color – the highest grade for a white diamond) and in purity (Internally Flawless). As with the famous Cullinan I and Koh-i-noor diamonds, which are part of the British crown jewels, the stone is part of the rare subgroup comprising less than 2% of all gem diamonds, known as type IIa. Diamonds in this category are the purest chemically, giving them exceptional optical transparency.

When curating our Magnificent Jewels sales, we’re continually on the hunt for not only extraordinary, timeless designs but also for of-the-moment jewels and gemstones that signal growth areas in the market. In particular, it’s been thrilling to witness the increase in our clients’ appetite for stones beyond the standard canon of diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds, and to see the evolution in their appreciation for specimen stones, such as the Paraiba Tourmaline and Diamond Pendant Necklace, which sold for an incredible $1.2 million. We also saw exceptional results for signed jewels by the iconic maisons, including a Mystery-Set Ruby Holly Leaf brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels that sold for nearly $1 million.

The sale included colorful diamonds and beautiful sapphires owned by George C. Thomas Jr., which totaled 7 million. The group was led by two exquisite old-cut colored diamonds: a 4.08-carat Fancy Intense Pink, sold for 3.8 million (estimate 1.2-1.8 million), and a 3.46-carat Fancy Gray-Violet. carat, which reached 2 million (estimate 500-700,000).
A magnificent ring with emerald-cut Type IIA diamonds, color D, weighing 26.06 carats by Kwiat, yielded 2.3 million (estimate $ 2/3 million). Three bidders pushed a major Burmese ruby and diamond ring from 8.80 carats to 1.6 million (estimate 1.3-2 million). An exceptionally rare Brazilian Paraiba tourmaline and diamond pendant necklace, weighing 10.31 carats, has risen to 1.2 million (estimate 500-700,000). Collectors vied for a Van Cleef & Arpels Boreal diamond necklace, which sold for 1.2 million (estimate 1-1.5 million) and a Harry Winston sapphire and diamond necklace, which made 1 million (estimate 800,000). -1.2 million).

Alison Lou’s new amusements

She hasn’t lost her irreverence, which has translated into a pop style, with the now famous emoticon jewels. But Alison Chemla, founder and designer of the New York brand Alison Lou, has also decided to introduce more classic jewels, alongside those that represent a box of fries or a small robot. Although, in reality, the hoop earrings in 14-karat gold, with sapphires or other pavé stones, are mainly used to be connected to the new pendants.

This does not mean, however, that they cannot be worn alone. Alison Lou became famous for her debut collection, Emoticore. Then, the line has evolved to include collections based on other themes, such as Casino and Secret Garden or Mama Mia, conceived after a summer trip to Italy: the collection is made up of designs inspired by favorite pastas: farfalle, penne and spaghetti. Then came the signet rings, necklaces, pendants and hoop earrings, with diamonds or enamel, also worn by Emily Ratajkowski, Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga, Gigi Hadid, Tracee Ellis Ross, Celine Dion.

The Juno diamond drives Sotheby’s sale

The Magnificent Jewels auction organized by Sotheby’s in New York for June 16 includes a wide range of jewels. But also, always, with gems. Among all, the Juno Diamond stands out, a 101.41 carat D-colored gemstone, internally flawless. Given that the Sotheby’s auction takes place in June, the diamond inspired by the Roman goddess of light, youth, motherhood and fertility, Juno, seems to arrive at the right time. It is also one of only 11 perfect diamonds to appear at auction since 1990. It is estimated to start at $ 7.5 million.

The jewelry by Mindi Mond

Mindi Mond describes herself as a devoted wife and mother and a dedicated board member of the Thanc Foundation (Thyroid, Head and Neck Cancer). But she is better known, however, as the founder and designer of the Maison that bears her name. He lives and works in New York, but his jewels seem more inspired by the ancient (and also modern) Art Deco. In fact, Mondi says that his mother was a collector of vintage jewelry, including those from the Victorian and Edwardian era.

A passion that reverberates on the collections that the designer offers: for example, jewels can be made with elements of ancient rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets or watches dismantled and adapted according to the taste of Mindi. But not only of course. They are classy jewels, in 18 or 14 carat gold, but also silver, diamonds, and sometimes colored stones, such as rubellite. Diamonds are the most used stone by the designer, in particular with different cuts mounted on the same jewel.

Yael Sonia’s movements

///

The geometrical and kinetic jewels by Brazilian Yael Sonia, who has known success in New York ♦

There are children who never are stop. But there are also jewels that are always on the move. Gold and precious stones that are always active are the elements that distinguish the work of a successful designer, quite original: Yael Sonia. Brasilian of Sao Paulo, in 2003 she opened a boutique in downtown New York, successfully. His strange, but very intuitive insight stems from his studies: the Parsons School of Design in New York, but also mathematics. The union of art and scientific calculus has allowed her to create jewels that play on volumes, but also on movement within them, with stones that can swing back and forth as they would be on rails. This kind of jewelery, called Spinning, has become a model also sought after by many Hollywood stars.

Yael Sonia has a style that has evolved over time, is changed from pieces which were small sculptures or, rather, miniature architectures, to a genre that combines artistic creation with portability. The fact of working in Brazil, then, has added the possibility of having a large variety of gems, often tailored to their jewelery. And commensurate with the difficult and refined workmanship of his pieces, especially bracelets and rings, are the prices: it ranges from a minimum of about $ 2,000 to tens of thousands.

The Light of Africa Diamond
The Light of Africa Diamond

The diamond has been classified by the Gemological Institute of America and is accompanied by a report by Gia which emphasizes its classification as the apex of the diamond pyramid. The gem was cut from a rough stone of 299.3 carats, unearthed from the Cullinan diamond mine owned by Petra Diamonds. The large gemstone was mined, cut and polished in South Africa. The Cullinan diamond mine has produced some of the most historic diamonds, including the Great Star of Africa and the Second Star of Africa, both of which are part of the British Crown Jewels set in the Scepter of the Sovereign and the Crown of the Imperial State. European style, American DNA: Sidney Garber’s jewels

//

From Chicago to Valenza or Vicenza, but carrying their own precious stones: the story of Sidney Garber testifies to the scruple and precision of the American jeweler. Son of a watchmaker, Sidney opened his jewelry store in 1946. And Brook, his daughter, followed him on his travels and in the store. The founder of the jewelry disappeared, and in 2008 it was she who took over the reins of the company. Not only that: it has decided to relaunch the business with the opening of another boutique in the heart of Manhattan, on Madison Avenue, alongside the one in Chicago.

And Brook Garber has won a prominent role: in 2015 she was elected to the Council of Fashion Designers of America, an exclusive group of the main American designers of fashion, jewelry and accessories. In addition, part of the Maison’s profits go to non-profit organizations dedicated to mental health and children’s education.

The psychedelic hexagons of ReRe Corcoran

//

The name ReRe is not very common, not even in America, where ReRe Corcoran lives and works. The designer founded ReRe Jewelry, based in New York, although she is originally from Boston, where she studied. Her jewels are very fashionable in the New York that matters. But in addition to being fashionable, the designer is also an innovator: she has developed a revolutionary enamel manufacturing process. With the colors of this material ReRe creates jewels that sometimes allude also to the psychedelic season of the sixties, with a hypnotic mixture of shades. In addition to enamel, ReRe jewels are made of 18 carat gold.

Another aspect that characterizes the Maison’s jewels is the almost obsessive repetition of the hexagonal shape. According to the designer, the hexagons at the base of the beehives are evidence of a highly efficient geometric shape. There is no lack of charity in the ReRe Jewelry business: the proceeds from a collection, Angel, go in part to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Bayco’s new high jewelery

//

High jewelery at the event dedicated to high jewelery. It’s obvious, for Bayco. The New York Maison was present among the 18 brands of Haute Jewels Geneva. And, of course, it featured some high-end jewelry, based on Burmese pigeon blood rubies, cornflower blue Kashmiri sapphires, bright green Colombian emeralds, as well as diamonds with the best features.

Anello caratterizzato da uno straordinario rubino birmano cabochon naturale non riscaldato da 20,24 carati e da 6,94 carati di diamanti tondi taglio brillante e incolori a forma di aquilone incastonati in platino

The Maison was founded in the States in 1981 by the brothers Moris and Giacomo Hadjibay, who grew up in Italy, where their father, Amir Hadjibay, a famous merchant of precious stones (but also of equally precious carpets), had settled in 1959. Long journeys between Iran and India, including visits to the maharajahs, over the years have endowed the house with exceptional gems. Stones that have remained in the tradition of the Maison, which has earned a reputation for intransigence in the selection and quality of its choices for top-of-the-range jewelry, now with the help of the third generation with Marco and Manuel Hadjibay. The business, which began with the production of high-end jewelry then sold by other famous Maison, has evolved and now Bayco represents a guarantee of quality, often with stones that represent unique pieces.

Julie Lamb for Ukraine

//

Julie Lamb proudly jokes about the meaning of her name and transforms it into jewels ♦

Chronicles from New York: Julie Lamb said he had a passion for jewelry since childhood. How many girls slipped beads on the wire at his home in Brooklyn. An interest that has increased over the years. So, after graduating from the High School of Art & Design in Midtown Manhattan, he graduated in metalsmithing and, finally, in 2014 he founded his own brand, Julie Lamb. Proudly sheep, you could say, because his last name has also suggested a style for jewelry, with a simplified silhouette of the quadruped, which becomes a pendant, ring or a pair of earrings.

But not only: it suggests a reflection on the philosophy of black sheep (or you are in the herd, or you off?). She, the designer, of course encourages to be sheep and wear her jewelery, gold and diamonds. Prices range from $ 450 for the sheep easier to 10,00 for jewelry gold. If you love they, even a wolf don’t would be able to take it.

Speaking of wolf: one of the latest creations is a series dedicated to fighters in Ukraine. Julie Lamb has pledged to donate $ 500 from the sale of any medallion necklace dedicated to Ukraine to Army Sos, an organization that supports Ukraine’s frontline fighters with the supplies they need to defend their homeland and protect themselves in war. In short, Julie has the name of lamb, but a lion’s will.

The large temples are back, the diamonds with six zeros are back. The next stop for enthusiasts and collectors will take place in New York, where Christie’s is planning a sale of Magnificent Jewels on April 13. The auction is led by The Fuchsia Rose, an intense pink-purple diamond of 8.82 carats, potentially flawless internally (estimate 4-6 million dollars). The sale also features beautiful colored diamonds, such as an 11.63 carat blue fancy diamond ring, VS1 clarity (Estimate 2.5-3.5 million) and a 15.31 carat (1- 1.5 million). A 2.44-carat fancy deep pink diamond ring (valued at 1-2 million). There are also colorless diamonds, including a ring with a maxi brilliant cut stone of 51.28 carats, color I, clarity SI1 (1.3-1.8 million), or a ring with a diamond of 21.05 carats, color E , internally flawless (1.4-2.4 million). The sale includes a rare and historic antique Tiffany & Co. Subway pendant watch with diamonds and enamels. Presented for the first time to the public at auction, the pendant watch was a specially commissioned piece of jewelry to commemorate the opening of the New York subway. Behind the domed crystal on one side of the clock is the earth taken during the Metro’s inauguration on March 24, 1900, along with the initials of the original owner, Georgie Annie McDonald, daughter of John B. McDonald who was responsible for overseeing the construction of the first metro line in the city. The incision along the outside reads “some earth from the first shovel extracted by Mayor Van Wyck at the excavation of the ground for the first subway”.
The sale is complemented by jewelry from the Rockefeller family, including a Cartier Art Déco sapphire and diamond bracelet, a Van Cleef & Arpels sapphire and diamond ring and an Art Déco emerald pearl, diamond and multi-gem necklace.

Gold and good feelings for Gumuchian’s jewelry

//

Three women of Armenian origin: Anita Gumuchian and her daughters Myriam and Patricia. It was they who continued the centenary history of the family in jewelry. Jewelry designed by women for women, they emphasize. And they do it in the center of Manhattan, New York. Diamonds and colored gems are the ingredients behind the Maison, which has the family name, Gumuchian.

Those of the Maison are all high quality jewels, in platinum or yellow, white and pink with 18 carats. The shape of the jewels, without being extravagant, is a mix of modern styles from which occasionally some oriental allusion emerges. Gumuchian also offers important pieces, such as earrings with emeralds or the ring with a large cabochon sapphire in the center. Furthermore, two collections are linked to philanthropic objectives. The first is dedicated to the protection of bees, insects that are fundamental for natural balance: the jewels use the hexagonal shape of the cells in the hives. The second also serves to finance the cardiology department of the Columbia Medical Center: it is no coincidence that the collection is called Tiny Hearts.

The geometries of Melissa Kaye

//

Geometric, rigorous, but pleasant jewels of the New York designer Melissa Kaye ♦ ︎
For ten years Melissa Kaye has been dealing with complicated financial products in the world’s most prestigious business bank, Goldman Sachs. And with a leading role: vice president Credit Derivatives Strategist, after a degree in computer science and engineering at the Mit of Boston. Then, in 2010, Melissa decided to radically change her life and start from scratch, or almost. And so, she returned to school at the Fashion Institute of technology to study jewelery design.

Two years later, here the great debut with his luxury jewelry brand. Reaching her goals for many years was the style of work, even in jewelry she applied the same rules of business: creativity combined with a practical sense of business. And she did not abandon completely the scientific teachings learned during the degree, given that his jewels have rigorous forms, with well-defined geometries. Of course, with some poetic license, to avoid excessive rigor.
Gold and diamonds are the most used elements and also determine a price range that goes from about 5,000 to 15,000 dollars, with a top of over 36,000 dollars for a necklace with diamonds for 6.86 carats trillion cut.
