Jewels and nature with Daniela Villegas

Daniela Villegas, one of the most imaginative designers, continues her representation of the nature of her native country, Mexico. Among the new features it offers is the Imprints of the Heart collection, dedicated to people or places that leave a mark. It is composed of a series of large evocative pendants that resemble the objects used for stamping, made of gold and semi-precious stones.

Her jewels, conceived and made in Los Angeles, where Daniela Villegas lives and works, are always surprising, like the Papalote earrings, inspired by a type of scorpion. They are crafted in 18k yellow gold, with multicolored gems surrounding kite-shaped amethysts. In fact, the word Papalote means kite in Spanish. They are part of the Chromatic Paradise collection and have been proposed, together with other jewels, in a trunk show on Tiny Gods.

Daniela Villegas has always been a passionate observer of nature. In her jewelry she uses organic elements such as beetles, porcupine quills, feathers, shells, pebbles and wood with 18 karat gold in every color mixed with precious and semiprecious stones. But the designer is also inspired by what surrounds nature, even from a cultural point of view. As evidenced by the series dedicated to the English director and journalist David Attenborough, specialized in documentaries on natural life. The necklace is made of 18k yellow gold, champagne diamonds, emeralds and opal.

Cassandra Goad, jewelry with a smile

The jewels full of humor and fantasy by Cassandra Goad, among tagliatelle and cabbage flowers ♦ ︎

For Londoners it is an institution. For those not living in Britain, Cassandra Goad is above all the designer appreciated by Kate Middleton: the Duchess of Cambridge has chosen the Maison’s earrings for the baptism of the third child Louis and is a fan of her. And in 2020 the designer presented a special collection to celebrate the brand’s 35th anniversary, with a reinterpretation of the most famous pieces.

Cassandra Goad has won a special place among the jewelers of London because she is a bit special herself. Most of Cassandra Goad’s jewels are inspired by travel, for example, more recently those in Mexico and Sicily. But she is also a gemologist, writer, polyglot. In short, it is not easy to put Cassandra Goad in a box. It is best to understand her story, which began at the age of 13, when she started working part-time with a historic jeweler. In 1985 she started her own business in Notting Hill. Finally, she opened her four-story showroom in Sloane Street, London.

Studies in gemology allow the designer to also choose unusual stones, including praisiolites, cyanites, tourmalines and fire opals, as well as classic stones such as emeralds, sapphires, rubies, aquamarines. But, besides the experience, Cassandra adds that touch of English humor that makes everything lighter and more fun. In the Bella Sicilia collection, for example, are the pearl earrings worn by Kate Middleton inspired by cabbage flowers, or a ring modeled on noodles. But also to the Roman and Byzantine mosaics found on the Italian island. But another specialty of the designer is turning old jewelry into new pieces updated to the spirit of our time. A little like it happens with the British traditions.

Daniela Villegas: appeal to save the nature of Mexico

Years ago Daniela Villegas defined Mexico, her homeland, a chromatic paradise. A definition that then became a collection inspired by the animal world of the Central American country, in particular that of insects. The love for Mexico, combined with the fantasy of the Los Angeles-based designer, has not left her and the chromatic paradise continues to be renewed in her jewels. On the other hand, recalls Daniela Villegas, Mexico is home to about 10% of all the species existing in the world and is in first place for the richness of reptiles and amphibians, in third place for mammals, fourth for plants and eighth for birds.

For this reason the designer points her finger at the Mexican government, which has announced a 75% cut of the budget to the National Commission of Protected Areas, an essential institution for the well-being and environmental conservation of Mexico, as well as for urban and rural populations and indigenous people who live inside and outside these spaces. Thus, alongside the jewels, Daniela Villegas launches a #salvemosCONANP petition.

In the desert with Daniela Villegas

//

The jewels of the La Reina Coyote line designed by Daniela Villegas: the wild American desert becomes precious ♦ ︎

Unique pieces, as always. It’s natural: Daniela Villegas uses stones that seem to come from the stony vastness of the deserts. Stones that are different from each other and, above all, are chosen for their shape, color, mélange. The new series of jewelry entitled La Reina Coyote brings your fantasy to imagine those desert areas where the wind is blowing hot, dry grass bushes roll towards the horizon and among the stones only the scorpions face, another animal dear to the designer based on Los Angeles.

La Reina Coyote jewels depict wild desert dogs with a gold crown set by gems.

Anello La Reina Coyote
Anello La Reina Coyote

The coyote its’ depicts with the snout, carved in stones like chrysocolla, or rhodonite, while pink sapphires, diamonds or tourmalines are affixed to the queen’s gold tiara. Thus, bracelets, rings or brooches take on an aggressive but also ironic appearance. A tribute to the great world that lies on the border between the United States and Mexico, the country of origin of Daniela Villegas. And that it’s now remained in the media spotlight, but for other reasons. Margherita Donato

Daniela Villegas in the Chromatic Paradise

Daniela Villegas, travel to Mexico with the Chromatic Paradise collection ♦
Daniela Villegas, travel to Mexico with the Chromatic Paradise collection ♦ ︎
That Daniela Villegas is attracted by the colors of her country of origin, Mexico, is known. Her jewels are always based on contrasts of shapes and colors strong, cheerful, uncompromising. Add to this a fantasy that gallops like a wild horse across the plains of Texas. Combine these two aspects and you will have Chromatic Paradise, a collection that appeals to the wild nature of those lands, but also to the traditions born beyond the Rio Bravo. Daniela Villegas, who works and lives in Los Angeles, not only does not forget those harsh and enthralling atmospheres, but continues to observe them under a microscope. Her jewels are fanciful reconstructions or interpretations. This is also the case for the Chromatic Paradise collection, where for once the insects (her main source of inspiration) become a subject that is always present, but secondary. Instead, snakes and coyotes emerge with the difficult art of stone carving, with the classic mix of precious stones, semi-precious stones and natural elements. In this case, an even more effective formula. Giulia Netrese

The colorful world of Daniela Villegas

Daniela Villegas: precious insects, nature, plants, between Mexico and fantasy ♦ ︎
Daniela Villegas has a double luck: she lives in a own colorful world even when the story seems to paint the life of humanity in black and white. She also has the privilege of being born in a country, Mexico, which is perhaps colored by law. You can not be avoid to get dazzled by the tinged Mexican shades that lie in the natural landscape, in the plants, and even in the wildlife, from big to tiny animals.
It is impossible, then, to create jewels without carrying the color palette on brooches, necklaces and rings. And more, Daniela has a fantasy that seems born from Alice in Wonderland, the knowledge of stones and a personal preference for craftsmanship. An so it is understood why Daniela Villegas’s jewels can be so above the norm, to be surprising and, of course, be so sought after by enthusiasts and collectors. The lines of his collections are, though not exclusively, inspired by two subjects: insects and Mexican nature, which she knows well even though she is living between Los Angeles and Paris.
