Dale Hernsdorf, 22-karat creativity

/

There are many jewelers who, like Dale Hernsdorf, studied painting (and in this case, also photography) before turning to earrings, rings and necklaces. A sign that sensitivity to the visual arts is a spice that gives something extra when it comes to designing a jewel. And, indeed, Dale Hernsdorf also has a job as an illustrator and graphic designer in her curriculum. Of course, before moving on to the side of the jewelry makers. The jewels of the brand that bears her name, in Santa Barbara, near Los Angeles, are all handmade.

The designer has chosen to work almost always with 22 carat yellow gold, therefore very yellow, as was used in the past. In addition, she prefers large colored stones, such as tourmaline and rubellite, to create large rings, ruff necklaces or dangle earrings, but also pendants. But in Dale Hernsdorf’s activity it is also right to remember her commitment as a teacher, after UCLA, she now dedicates time as a volunteer at the non-profit organization A Place Called Home.

Leigh Miller’s liquid sculptures

/

Quicksilver. Soft, liquid, natural. The jewelry by Leigh Miller is different from others. And they don’t cost much either. Everything was born (and continues) from her passion for sculpture. But that comes later. Originally from Santa Monica, a seaside town near Los Angeles, the designer graduated in fashion design from Otis College of Art and Design in the big Californian city. Then, she moved to New York, where she worked for some designers in the fashion industry. But without the creative outlet she imagined. About ten years ago she started thinking about what else she could do.

Current earrings, in argento e perle
Current earrings, in argento e perle

In the meantime she was engaged to a Brazilian and moved to Rio, where she attended the Atelier Mourao, a school founded in the sixties by the jeweler Caio Mourao. The jewelry, in reality, is a compromise. In the heart of Leigh Miller there is sculpture, a road, however, too uncertain. Better, therefore, to create small sculptures, but which can be sold immediately.

For her jewels she uses the lost wax casting technique, but with a personal style: she heats the wax, melts it and pours it on a surface, to obtain the shapes she wants. But she, she says, it is always up to the moon and the stars to decide how to melt the wax. She is also inspired by natural forms, such as a variety of marine stones. But without forgetting sculpture stars such as Jean Arp, Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. The jewelry is made from partially recycled sterling silver.

All thanks to great-grandmother: the Adina Reyter brand in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, has conquered a place among the favorite jewelers of women, and not just Hollywood stars, even its first client is called Demi Moore. As the founder of the jewelry brand tells, the story of the family begins with the great-grandmother, who immigrated to the United States without knowing the English language, but despite this, she was able to create a clothing company, then carried on by her sons. The story of those immigrants was part of Adina’s childhood, who as a young girl worked in the family business as a designer, in charge of sales, packaging and shipping. The AR brand is based on the idea of offering jewels at reasonable prices, so that women can shop for themselves and use every day, always for years to come. Ring Around the Rosie with Spinelli Kilcollin

/

Spinelli Kilcollin‘s mission: to stay in the center of the circle ♦

Like Barack Obama, Yves Spinelli was born in Honolulu. But he, the son of Italian hairdressers, instead of pursuing a career as a lawyer, and then as a politician, chose the glittering world of precious stones. First, however, his father, Antoine Spinelli, hairstylist, introduced him to the world of fashion. In 1997, in fact, he moved to Los Angeles where he worked in the symbolic luxury boutique Maxfield.

The world of fashion taught Yves Spinelli some precious notions and put him in contact with those who later became his customers. Spinelli Kilcollin, a high-end jewelry company, was founded in 2010 together with the designer Dwyer Kilcollin and has over 50 luxury stores around the world where it sells its collections. The basic idea of Spinelli’s style is quite simple but, at the same time, immediately recognizable. It all revolves around the idea of the circle, which becomes an element that is also capable of uniting. Small rings, the Galaxy rings, in fact, become elements that hold other rings together. In this way the same geometric element is multiplied in two, three or four times. Or the small rings replace the central stone, or connect in a chain with the perfectly round elements. In a circle that never stops.

Where Flowen flows

Digital design and more shapes of nature: between Los Angeles and Italy, this is is the Flowen mix ♦
Flowen is a digitally grown jewelry in Los Angeles. What does it mean? Simple: it is a hi-tech jewelery Maison, which design with inspiration by the strange primordial forms of natural elements and at the same time with the use of high-tech systems. In this case, in short, craftsmanship is the designer who is at the computer: jewels are instead produced using a metal powder in gold, silver or alloy, transformed into separate pieces without by-products, with a technique similar to 3D printing. The pieces are then assembled by goldsmiths in Italy. Jewelry prices vary between 1500 and 2,000 euros.

Biology and geology, in particular, are the sources of inspiration: Flowen is also recognizable through the Phi mark, that is, the Greek letter that in mathematics is used as a symbol of the golden section. It was chosen because it is the initials of the name, in Greek, of the sculptor and architect Fidia (the one who designed the Parthenon), who found perfect proportions in his works. And so: the inspirational models of these jewels are nature, technology and a bit of ancient culture. Who would have guessed it? Giulia Netrese

The carved pearls of Galatea

Carve the pearls. It may be sacrilege for someone. For Chi Huynh, founder of Galatea, it is an art. The idea originated in the late nineties, when the designer of Vietnamese origin accidentally dented a pearl that he was preparing for a jewel. He therefore asked himself what could happen to sculpt the whole pearl. He did it.

Ciondolo con perla di Tahiti intagliata e gemme

From that idea, Galatea Carved Pearls was born, which takes its name from one of the 50 nymphs of the sea according to Greek mythology. The first carved pearls of Galatea contained diamonds enclosed in the mother of pearl sphere. But then the art of carving of Chi Huynh expanded to a wide range of interventions and includes jewelry with black Tahitian pearls, as well as Golden South Sea or freshwater pearls. With the art of carving pearls, always done by hand, the artist-designer has won several jewelry awards.

Difficult to imitate it: mother of pearl, although softer than diamonds, is rather hard and must be handled with care not to ruin the small spheres. The pearl is first traced by hand and sculpted and then polished to smooth the surface. The effect is truly amazing.

A lollipop for Retrouvaì

New Los Angeles-based Canadian designer jewelry Kirsty Surian with her Retrouvaí

The designer debuted four years ago and has already attended Las Vegas Couture. She wastes no time. The jewelry runner is Kirsty Surian and works in Los Angeles, but she is Canadian from Toronto. With a grandmother stylist for a large commercial chain and another grandmother who collected semi-precious stones and amber, she started architecture.

But after working in a design studio, she was lucky enough to find those who taught her the secrets of jewelry production and founded her own small jewelery house. Which has a really unusual name: it’s called Retrouvaí and is pronounced in English with Reh-tro-v-eye. The word derives from the French name Retrovailles, a word that indicates the joy of getting back in touch with something from one’s past. The name certainly stands out from the rest. And the jewels? The collections already have a well-defined character. Among the latest collections, Lollipop stands out, with the use of daring combinations of different stones. But also the pendants with refined cut stones. Lavinia Andorno

Jacquie Aiche for the summer

The new jewels by Jacquie Aiche, Californian fantasy on free exit ♦

Jacquie Aiche represents the California that you imagine: sun, freedom, informality in clothing and, of course, also in the choice of jewelry. The 2019 spring-summer collection confirms the impression. The designer was inspired by Mother Nature, Earth and Heaven. All the elements within the collection, textures and shapes, the way in which diamonds and gold blend together, and precious stones, lead to a sense of new ease and freshness.

Anello in oro rosa con diamanti e tormalina intagliata

Raised with Egyptian and American parents, Jacquie Aiche adds diverse, opposite cultural and aesthetic stories. From this unlikely combination of heritage, she took an interest in the jewels of American Indians, pardons, Native Americans, fossils and gems, but also Middle Eastern influences with hammered gold, amulets and symbolic images. Her chains for the body and bracelets are in the classic Coachella philosophy, uninhibited, out of rules, but at the same time well accepted by those who follow them and, perhaps, establish them. In Los Angeles tribute to Paula Crevoshay

The incredible jewels of Paula Crevoshay in an exhibition at the Museum of Los Angeles ♦ ︎

What is the difference between jewelry and art? In the case of Paula Crevoshay, none. She is a designer but, more correctly, a free spirit that working with gold and precious stones. The result is jewelry to watch and admire.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History has decided to dedicate an exhibition dedicated to Paula Crevoshay (7 December 2018-12 May 2019).

Spilla a forma di testa di tigre con diamanti
Spilla a forma di testa di tigre con diamanti

The exhibition is titled Art of the Jewel: The Crevoshay Collection and includes 54 works by the artist-goldsmith, including earrings, bracelets and brooches, next to the museum’s preserved gems and minerals. The combination is not accidental: the exhibition intends to tell the road that runs through the raw ore that turns into a jewel. And those of Paula Crevoshay are truly unique jewels. Also because the designer started working as a painter and engraver before moving to jewelry. The result is his unique pieces, rich in gems, which are small wearable sculptures. An example: the Montana Bitterroot brooch uses almost 300 pink sapphires extracted in Montana (USA) of a particularly rare type and accumulated over the years. Cosimo Muzzano

The bees by Daniela Villegas

//

The capsule collection by Daniela Villegas dedicated to bees, metaphor of the female universe ♦ ︎
To be or not to be? The dilemma of Hamlet, played by Daniela Villegas, becomes: to bee or not to bee? The right answer is the second: the bee has successfully turned into a capsule collection, Sisterhood. The bees are buzzing and, after all, they are part of that miniature universe, that of insects, which is so exciting for the Mexican designer based in Los Angeles. Queen Bee includes bees wearing crowns to represent the theme of power, but also a sisterhood, because the bees are very supportive of each other. Not only that: the bees have, beyond their decorative effect, a primacy in productivity, in wisdom, in spirituality, humility, modesty, and so on.
The jewels of Daniela Villegas dedicated to the bees are in 18-carat yellow gold, in some cases with a drop of multicolored jasper, reminiscent of the classic yellow and black stripes that characterize the body of insects. To complete the jewels are South Sea pearls and citrines. The capsule collection has had a sudden success on Moda Operandi. But it is worth looking at it. Alessia Mongrando

The second marine love of Daniela Villegas

The crabs seen by Daniela Villegas, the second love after the insects ♦
That Daniela Villegas is a lover of nature is known. But it is curious to observe how, within his observation of the natural world, there are aspects to which the Mexican-born designer based in Los Angeles is more interested. The most beloved world is, perhaps, that of insects. Big, small, grotesque if transformed into jewelry: beetles and relatives are among the subjects that have become more sources of inspiration. But another strand is that of the sea. And, in particular, to animals that most resemble insects: crabs. With menacing claws that show off large transparent gems, the crabs are interpreted by Daniela Villegas with colored stones, with strong colors, such as tourmalines and opals, next to gold and diamonds. They are above all rings and pendants, with a vaguely tropical flavor. On this page you can see some of the crabs that make up the designer’s collections. Giulia Netrese

Suzanne Kalan ad Amalfi

The Amalfi collection of Patile Kalandjian is added to the jewels of Suzanne Kalan ♦ ︎
Born in Lebanon by an Armenian family, Suzanne Kalandjian moved to Los Angeles. And here she invented something: the brand Suzanne Kalan. But also a style, and it’s not a little thing, which curiosely recalls a mixed or aligned matches, quartzes on the walls of ancient caves, salt crystals, and even fries. Gold and diamonds are cut into baguettes and aligned or put together in a fake disorder, which is actually harmonious. Often the effect of her jewels is spectacular. After 28 years of work, Suzanne is now assisted by her daughter Patile, who curiously approached biochemistry studies before hiring her maternal profession. Signed by Patile, for example, the Amalfi collection, inspired by the small Italian town overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, where the designer went on holiday (“one of the best trips I’ve ever had,” he told). In this collection a new selection of cuts and precious stones has been added, such as moonstone, amethyst, topaz, morganite, with colors that recall the sunrise and sunset views of the Mediterranean coastline. A good way to start a designer career. Lavinia Andorno

Colette’s stars

Colette Steckel’s jewels, roots in France and Mexico, based in the US ♦ ︎
The name, Colette Steckel, has French roots. But she grew up in Mexico. With France, however, she maintained a close bond: even today, when she moved to Los Angeles, part of the processing of his collections is made in the transalpine country. In Mexico City, however, she maintains a flagshipstore, while in Los Angeles has its business location, launched in 1995, with the Colette brand. She tells that her passion for jewels dates back to her childhood when she bonded geode crystals with copper wire for electricity. But then she attended a graphic designer course at Gia. Her style is rather eclectic: she says to inspire travel around the world, among the Masai Africans and Istanbul artisans. One of her favorite themes is the one inspired by the stars, as evidenced by his Galaxia Collection. Among the fans of Colette who participated at the Couture in Las Vegas, there are Madonna, Rihanna, Adriana Lima, Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba. Stars which attract other stars.  Lavinia Andorno
