The Hollywood diamonds

The jewels of Hollywood stars, including diamonds that seal the marriage and others that do not serve to stop the breakup

It seems that jewels, especially those with diamonds, are the favorite partners of Hollywood actresses and starlets and, more generally, in the entertainment world. Of course, they are also faithful and sought after companions of other women, especially those who have a good financial availability, or the good fortune to be with a rich partner. But, of course, in the entertainment world jewels are more ostentatious, almost necessary to shine even more on the red carpet. Unfortunately, these super jewels do not always serve to strengthen weddings and engagements. There is no need to go back to the legendary gifts of the passionate and quarrelsome couple Richard Burton to Liz Taylor, based on Bulgari bracelets and rings: jewels have never gone out of fashion, as evidenced by Mariah Carey’s decision to keep, despite the breakup of the engagement with James Packer, the ring he had given her as a token of love. It is a jewel worth 7 million dollars, for 35 carats.

A mind-boggling figure that must have made Beyoncé’s hair stand on end: Jay-Z in fact turned to Lorraine Schwartz for an 18-carat diamond ring worth $ 5 million. A figure, 5 million, which would sum up the total value of the rings Victoria Beckham received from her husband David. Not to mention other famous rings, such as Khloe Kardashian ($ 4 million), Katy Perry ($ 1.2 million). But diamonds are not always enough to consolidate a relationship. The engagement, of Lady Gaga, for example, did not last long despite the heart-shaped ring given in 2015 by Taylor Kinney to the singer-actress, who had commented on Instagram: “He gave me his heart on Valentine’s Day and I I said YES! “).

We have already talked about Kim Kardashian, who was robbed of jewelry years ago in Paris: her ex-husband, Kanye West, had designed the engagement ring with Lorraine Schwartz, made with a 15-carat diamond worth 1.6 million dollars. Not only that, just a few days before the robbery, the rapper had given the famous star a new ring worth 4.8 million dollars for 20 carats. Published on Facebook, the photo of the ring teased the Parisian thieves.

Another top jewel is the one received by the actress and model, Blake Lively. Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds gave her a $ 2.5 million, 12-carat stone. Another 2 million, on the other hand, was spent by Ashton Kutcher for Mila Kunis. The same price paid by Donald Trump for Melania (but in this case the show has nothing to do with it). The ring bought by Tom Cruise for Katie Holmes at the time cost a little less: 1.5 million dollars. So much, however, compared to Michael Douglas, that he spent “only” 1 million on a vintage 1920 jewel given to his Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Unfortunate rings: Jennifer Aniston received a 1 million dollar diamond from Justin Theroux: 8 carats but, above all, double the value given by Brad Pitt to Angelina Jolie (other times), designed by the same actor and valued half a million dollars. But, unfortunately, the ring did not help avoid divorce. Another ring that did not bring luck: the one, mentioned, that Taylor Kinney had given to Lady Gaga. Designed by Lorraine Schwartz, it had a heart-shaped diamond, valued at approximately $ 360,000. But the wedding has vanished.

After all, there is no need to spend millions: “only” 120 thousand dollars cost Adam Schulman the ring for Anne Hathaway: a little less than that for Lady Gaga but, on the other hand, after nine years the marriage resists.

Other rings: on April 28, 2018, actress and singer Lea Michele announced her engagement to businessman Zandy Reich, with photos of her ring posted on Instagram. They got married on March 9, 2019 in Napa, California.

In December 2019, Emma Stone also announced her engagement to Dave McCary on Instagram, albeit with a diamond and pearl ring.

Sophie Belinda Jonas, an English actress who made her acting debut as Sansa Stark in HBO’s epic fantasy television series Game of Thrones, broke the news of her engagement to Joe Jonas by showing off the diamond ring in October 2017.

The treasures of Bulgari

/

A book with the stories, but above all with the jewels that accompanied the myth of Bulgari ♦ ︎
Here comes a book that tells everything and, above all, shows the art, the glory and the honors of Bulgari. The Roman Maison passed under the French of Lvmh is described by Vincent Meylan, a luxury specialist, who has already worked on Christie’s and Van Cleef & Arpels. The book is titled Bulgari, Treasures of Rome and, of course, tells the growth of the jewelry brand that became a myth in a few decades. A reputation won not only with the necessary skill in the goldsmith’s art, but also with the idea of wrapping their jewelery production with styles and forms borrowed from antiquity, that of the Roman Empire, but also that of the Byzantines and of Islamic art. The Trombino ring and the Serpenti bracelets have thus made the rounds of the world.
To compose the book the author has had access to the archives of the Maison and this explains the accuracy of the reconstruction and the photographic gallery that illustrates the pages of the book. In which there is no shortage, as could be expected, the classic images of customers who have become ambassadors of the jewelery brand, like Liz Taylor, the countess Dorothy Dentice di Frasso who attended Bulgari while she was in love with Gary Cooper, or the Infanta Beatrice of Spain and Princess Maria Jose of Belgium.
But it is reductive to describe Bulgari as a jewelery for celebrity. On the other hand, it is one of the world’s great jewelers capable of offering a different, recognizable style and, let’s say it, often also copied. Federico Graglia

Nana for Liz

A collection of jewels dedicated to Liz Taylor: it’s the idea by Swiss designer Nana Fink ♦
You can wonder yourself why there are myths that go down and others who endure in time. One of the myths non-tarnishable is that of Liz Taylor. Actress, husband collector, activist in the fight against Aids, has marked an entire era of Hollywood. But she was also a big fan of jewels: Elizabeth Taylor has collected so many, especially very expensive. Probably would have appreciated the dedication by Swiss designer Nana Fink, who chose to name her new collection Liz, in honor of the great artist who disappeared in 2011.
The style of the collection is original but at the same time has something that seems to be referred to the past century, for example, with diamonds (Liz’s favorite stone) antique cut. But the collection also uses colored stones, such as tourmalines and sapphires. The price of jewels: from 7200 dollars for a diamond ring for 2.7 carats, to 9800 dollars for gold earrings with rubies, tourmaline sapphires and aquamarine, until a diamond ring with tourmaline and sapphires, which costs 5,600 dollars. Chantecler plays new little bells

The 70 years of Chantecler and the collection that celebrates the Maison from Capri ♦
Chantecler, born in Capri with Salvatore Aprea and Pietro Capuano, star of the Dolce Vita of the Isola Azzurra, celebrated 70 years with the celebratory collection entitled Anima 70: a tribute to the symbols of the brand, such as Campanella, Gallo, Il Corno and Joyful, which enclose the atmosphere of Capri, and the iconic colors of the maison that uses corals, turquoise, kogolong and onyx. They are light necklaces, lively multi-charm bracelets and unpublished designs, such as earrings with a small bell and hoop earrings, a re-read of the adventure begun in 1947.
The presentation of Anima 70 in Rome, with the brothers Aprea, Costanza, Maria Elena and Gabriele heirs of Chantecler’s tradition that today besides the boutique in Capri counts on other shops in Cortina, Tokyo, Astana and Hong Kong.
Read also Chantecler’s soul
The History
At the end of the 1940s, Pietro Capuano opened a jewelery store in Capri with Salvatore Aprea, a young, very creative island. With the period of Dolce Vita Capri lives an unrepeatable tale: on the Island come the most beautiful and famous women in the world, the richest men in the world and many intellectuals. Pietro Capuano, nicknamed Chantecler, like the rooster of Edmond de Rostand’s opera, whose song has the power to summon the sun’s birth, is the eccentric master of ceremonies at Capri, the night emperor on the island.
The protagonists of the international jet set take away from the Island of Dolce Vita the Chantecler jewels, a symbol of the magic of Capri, whose fame dates back to the Roman Empire: among the first to appreciate Cesare Augusto and Tiberius who chose it as his residence . But it was in the 1950s that they were deciding their world success. The legendary Piazzetta became the world’s center of the island, so that over the years it is nicknamed the “living room of the world”.
Hollywood in Capri
In the 1950s, Liza Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Maria Callas, Rita Hayworth, Empress Soraya and Princess Grace Kelly fell in love with Chantecler jewelry. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis also became a customer of Capri’s boutique: in 1970 the Greek shipowner gave her a diamond star of inestimable value. Pietro Capuano created his jewels inspired by the woman who would wear them. Thus, unique pieces made of rare gems were born. Diamond and turquoise necklace like the Capri sea; Blue sapphires that resemble the starry sky; Rubies fireworks; Precious emeralds for color, size and cut.
Resumes the name from one of the most beautiful places in Capri, the Grotta Azzurra ring, white gold, diamonds and a beautiful central aquamarine. Pink cut diamonds support blue aquamarine like the sea, from cushion cutting. Galli’s Necklace is one of the most iconic creations of the maison that reproduces the logo in an original way. The diamond jewel in pink and pavé symbolizes the long tradition of the brand with numerous galleries of decreasing size. The Campanelle is inspired by an ancient legend: a shepherd looking for his only sheep disappeared in Capri, appeared on a cloud St. Michael, who pulled a bell from his neck and gave it to the young man, telling him that at his sound he would find The lost sheep. And so it was. The legend was repeated in 1944 when Chantecler made a bronze bell and donated it to US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to celebrate the end of the Second World War. In 1950 Chantecler created the first jewel bell, Premiere, given to countess Edda Ciano. Recently, Chantecler has designed Campaign Daisy for the daughters of President Obama. Liz Taylor’s jewels come back at Christie’s auction

Christie’s unveils new exceptional jewelry in the auction catalog of 17 May in Geneva
In Geneva, on 17 May, Christie’s will auction a 92 carat exceptional diamond-shaped heart, perfect. We’ve talked about here.
But that day will be for sale also many other interesting jewelry. In addition to those already anticipated in this article, there are others that the auction house has anticipated. Among them, there are some that belonged to Liz Taylor. In December 2011, Christie’s has already put on sale the collection of Elizabeth Taylor with these earrings and bracelet burmese rubies and diamonds signed Cartier. The jewels were part of the parure of jewels given to Elizabeth Taylor in August 1957 by her then husband, Mike Todd. Now are back on sale. The actress was famous for his passion for jewelry. But he was not the only woman with this enjoyable hobby. At the auction in Geneva, for example, you are selling the collection of an anonymous “elegant lady”, who apparently does not like the fame. The collection, however, is really top level. It includes a diamond necklace by Chopard, with a shaped D color diamond weight of approximately 56.03 carats pear (has a rating of up to US $ 7 million), in addition to exceptional jewelry created by Graff, De Grisogono and David Morris.
The space of the virtuous
For those who love the high jewelry, high design, there is a piece signed Jar (Joel Arthur Rosenthal) mysterious as creative maestro of jewelry. American by birth, Parisian by adoption, is considered a creative worship. Her earrings with diamonds are a delicious candy for collectors. An other talented designers is the Indian Viren Bhagat, who from Mumbai produces no more than 60 pieces a year. In the auction there will be a pair of her earrings with diamonds and rubies.
Cartier view from Éric Nussbaum
It has been recognized as one of the most eminent experts of Cartier and was hailed by his peers as “Eye”, an homage to the virtuoso level of its taste and refinement. And now the pieces of the vast collection owned by the expert, who died in 2003, are to be auctioned. It’s an interesting occasion: suffice it to say that the Nussbaum collection consists of over 1,600 jewelry and objects.
The charm of the sixties
The jewelry in Italy has experienced a moment of glory in the sixties. At the «dolce vita» of the jewel it is dedicated to a Christie’s auction section. From Buccellati to Villa or Bulgari, will be offered 40 jewels of that magical time. Federico Graglia

Nana Fink among the legends

From the myth of Liz Taylor to industrial design: the Swiss road of Nana Fink to jewelry.
There are myths that are never forgotten. The pairing of Liz Taylor and jewelery, for example, is inseparable. But not just for the big Maison which were favorites by the great American actress: also in Switzerland the charms of the most Cleopatra larger screen is more alive than ever. Witness Liz, new ring inspired by the elegance and the Elizabeth Taylor charisma of Nana Fink, Zurich brand, but sold in various boutiques in the world, including Paul Smith in London. The Liz ring is composed of a large prasiolite with cushion cut and small champagne diamonds mounted on white gold. At Baselworld, the Swiss company decided to also present other novelties in addition to the existing collections Loewenkind, Sophistiqueée & Adorée, Stella.
And to say that Nana Fink has followed a different path from that of many of his colleagues: he studied clinical psychology in Basel and Zurich, completed his PhD in the field of health. Then, he worked as a researcher at Harvard Medical School. But then he decided to follow his passion, with jewelry that apart from Liz Taylor, are also drawn to other myths of the past. Classical forms and industrial design, antiques and art deco, Nana Fink has found its balance. Her jewelry has a character and a very accurate construction. As befits a thoroughbred Swiss designers. Bulgari with Rome in Madrid

An exhibition with 145 jewels explores the influence (close) between the Bulgari design and the monuments of Rome.

The link between architecture and jewelery is tight. In some cases, then, it is almost ostentatious. So it’s not a surprise the exhibition Bulgari and Rome, in Madrid at Museo Thyssen Bornemisza, with 145 pieces of jewelry that show the similarities between some of the Maison masterpieces and other masterpieces such as monuments and urban organization of the Eternal City. Some of the forms as the plant St. Peter’s Square, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona and Pantheon, for example, may be found in bracelets and necklaces by Bulgari. But even the old pavement in small blocks of stone can become the model of cascades of stones that form an irregular mosaic. Or the Coliseum, which, with its facade of full and empty spaces inspired a 1934 bracelet with diamonds and rubies, in perfect Art Deco style. And not forgetting the obelisks that were brought to Rome by the emperors two thousand years ago and have seen their hieroglyphics turn into snakes and symbols that accompanied the creations of Bulgari for so many years. It is also used the octagonal shape, a favorite in many monuments and Baroque architecture: a pendant with this geometry was one of the nicest jewelry gifted from Richard Burton to Elizabeth Taylor for 40 years, perhaps to relieve the shock of the age. The exhibition hosts the Bulgari Heritage Collection, which includes, of course, jewelry that belonged American actress, plus some drawings on loan from private collections such as the Baroness von Thyssen. Bulgari’s necklaces

Bulgari dedicates a necklace to the Spanish Steps in Rome. But it is not the only at top by the Maison.
Bulgari, Maison born in Rome, has made a necklace inspired by the Spanish Steps, after it has financed the restoration (at a cost of 1.5 million euro). But not only. For the occasion it was also announced the creation of a necklace inspired by the famous Steps. It is made from diamonds and colored gems, arranged in a geometric and floral design that recalls (with a little ‘fantasy) the steps and azalea flowers that decorate it, as every year since 1951. Chapeau: it does something for its city. The Bulgari necklace is added to the list of big necklaces brand, one of his specialties. No need to repeat the passion that have had celebrities like Liz Taylor to the Bulgari necklaces to realize that this is perhaps the form of jewelery in which the chromatic fantasy of jeweler (now part of the French group LVMH) and where mastery in the composition is more evident. Large stones, great compositions, large necklaces, all to watch. Giulia Netrese

Back to selling the Taj Mahal

Will be back on sale one of the most famous (and disputed) jewel: the Taj Mahal, belonged to Elizabeth Taylor. It is a jewel with diamond heart-shaped that was donated by Richard Burton to 40th birthday of American actress. After the disappearance of the muse of Hollywood, the Taj Mahal diamond was sold at auction in December 2011 for $ 8.8 million. A price determined also by the history of the gem that was once it supposed owned by a Mughal emperor in India. But this has become a bone of contention: a few months after the auction by Christie’s, the buyer has asked for his money back, claiming that the jewel is actually not from the Mughal period as advertised. A version that Christie’s don’t agree. After four years, however, now the two sides came to an agreement: the jewelry will be for sell. The news is a scoop of the British Daily Mail. According to British newspaper, the auction house hopes to recover the 8.8 million who have been sold the jewel.
The name of the diamond, the Taj Mahal, comes from the attribution of original ownership in Shah Jahan, the king of the dynasty moghul who commissioned the monument Taj Mahal in Agra, India. When he gave to Elizabeth Taylor the jewel, in 1972, Burton had joked: “I would have liked to buy the Taj Mahal, but it would cost too much to transport.” The diamond pendant in the shape of heart is mounted on a chain of Cartier, together with a set of rubies and diamonds. Note that at first auction the estimate was very more low from final price: 300,000 and 500,000 dollars. Lavinia Andorno

In Shanghai the Liz Taylor’s Bulgari treasures

Are you in Shanghai or you intend to go there? In case, you can head to the Plaza Dept Store 66, where Bulgari it’s exposing the mythical jewels belonged to Liz Taylor. The exhibition has already been hosted by Beijing, and the exhibition is called A Passion for Jewelry. It includes the private collection of jewels belonged to the great actress, which always been a fan of Bulgari. The Italian brand of the LVMH group has regained the seven jewels on display in 2011 at a Christie’s auction in New York. They were costed it dear: they have the record price for jewelry sold at auction. In addition to jewelry, in Shanghai also are the movies costumes, like those worn during the film Cleopatra. Among the jewels on display, the parure of emeralds and diamonds, over 80 carats, and the pendant that was originally a brooch donated by Richard Burton to Liz for their engagement. Another gem is considered a masterpiece is a sautoir in platinum with diamonds, with a sapphire cabochon pendant and detachable: the actress had received from Burton on the occasion of his 40th birthday. No doubt the fateful date will have been sweeter. Federico Graglia

The battle on the Liz Taylor’s diamond

It was once the most admired jewels of Liz Taylor’s collection, but now the Taj Mahal, a heart-shaped diamond received from husband Richard Burton on her 40th birthday, is at center of a battle between the buyer, the trustees of the glamorous actress, and Christie’s. A legal squabble which could become an economic and image rebound. In fact, according to the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, the anonymous acquirer, who ended up bidding more than 20 times its estimated value between 300 and 500 thousand dollars, asked and obtained that the sale be canceled. The reason? The stone was not from the seventeenth century Mughal period, although that bears the name of a Shah Jahangir emperor’s wife Nur Jahan. After the sale’s cancellation, Christie’s demanded the return the money paid for the necklace (over $ 8 million), the lawsuit said. But the trustees refused to do so, because they allege that the auction house had never guaranteed the age of the diamond and the request violates the terms agreed. The reaction to Christie’s was not long in coming: to protect itself has retained the proceeds of the sale of one of the rings of Bulgari belonged to the actress that worth nearly $3 million. Match ended in equal then? No, because the counterparty itself denounced the non-payment of some «lost objects», presumably during the auction that, it is worth remembering, has achieved sales of over $ 100 million. Who will win? For now to be defeated is the Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation in receipt part of the proceeds, according to the last will of Liz Taylor. Matilde de Bounvilles
