The vintage simplicity of Ginette NY

Her name is Ginette NY, but Frédérique Dessemond, creator of the brand, was born in Marseille (France). Indeed, as you remember, she grew up in a building that made the history of architecture, the Cité Radieuse designed by the French architect Le Corbusier. Perhaps this is why you have assimilated the simplicity of the design, the rationality of the forms, and the rigor in the choice of the volumes of your jewels. The name Ginette, on the other hand, is that of a grandmother, and the initials NY are those of New York, the city where the designer has lived and worked since 1999. Her brand was born in the US city in 2002.

Although Ginette New NY’s jewelry is modern and linear, it also often has a vaguely vintage flavor. In fact, before turning into a jewelry designer, Frédérique Dessemond was involved in vintage objects and clothes. But, as sometimes happens, it was chance that pushed the designer to go to jewelry: the request of a friend who liked the style of the founder of Ginette NY. And for the next 20 years she never stopped.

Point, line and circle by Hadar Nornberg

Hadar Nornberg’s jewels, designer that loves a rigorous geometry ♦

An international artist lent to jewelry: she could be defined as the Israeli-Swiss Hadar Nornberg, who with her brand expressed her creativity between Tokyo, New York and Paris, while she learned the art of jewelry in Florence, at Alchimia contemporary jewelery school. Although she designs jewelry, the designer has architects, show business personalities and painters such as Lucio Fontana, Donald Judd, Le Corbusier, Carlo Scarpa, Beethoven and Pina Bausch as reference figures. But more generally, contemporary art, architecture, classical music and dance are the designer’s muses.

Line, point and thought: through these three elements the collections of rings and bracelets are created with an ultra simple design, but with an elaborate conception. The three artistic lines to which Hadar refers are Bauhaus, art deco and minimalism. And the materials he uses are interpreted in an original way: gold, but defined by elementary geometric shapes, such as the square, the round, where diamonds seem like challenges to the metal surface.

Architecture, rings and design come together with Swiss ArchiJewels

//

A century later, the Bauhaus remains the lighthouse that illuminated the design. Indeed, it gave birth to design: the German art school born in 1919 combined crafts and fine arts, industry and aesthetics. It is no surprise that even today the Bauhaus inspires those who design a piece of furniture, a table accessory, or a jewel. And this is what happened in Medrisio, a Swiss town on the border with Italy and headquarters of AnD, a company founded by the Italian-Swiss architect Eleonora Castagnetta. Her project is called Swiss ArchiJewels and consists of merging architectural imagery and its principles with the design of the jewel.

But, in addition to a series called Bauhaus Alphabet, which consists of 26 rings made through writing fonts, the designer has also designed jewels dedicated to famous architects, such as Le Corbusier. The great Swiss architect is evoked with four rings that refer to a little-known project: the pilgrim’s refuge, a small building at the foot of the Ronchamp chapel, which was made to accommodate the workers during the construction of the sacred place. Or the silver rings dedicated to Mario Botta’s project for the Church of San Giovanni Battista in Mogno, Switzerland. In short, jewels for those who love architecture and design.
