Art design walking to Milan

Special jewels, between art and ornament, for 14 designers: Sara Barbanti, Paula Castro, Laura Forte, Saimi Joutsi, Kaori Juzu, Merıstėma Lab, Valentina Romen, Agustina Ros, Karin Seufert, Yoko Takirai, Giulia Vecchiato, Laura Volpi, Angie Wu, Annachiara Zani. In Milan, the Esh Gallery organized Walking Treasures, a exhibition dedicated to contemporary jewelery. This is the sixth edition of the event. The jewels interpreted by the 14 authors are made with the most diverse materials: metal, glass, ceramic, with stones and natural elements. Glass and metal, for example, are used for the Suri & Ros collection, the result of the collaboration between Agustina Ros and Giulia Vecchiato, exhibited for the first time after a first online presentation at New York Jewelry Week 2020.

Each jewel is born from hand-finished metal plates on which blown glass is applied through a balanced game of contrasts between volumes. The unique feature of the collection is the multifunctionality: the brooches become pendants, the earrings become brooches and so on, with the result of having more jewels in one. Annarita Bianco (Merıstėma Lab), on the other hand, mixes traditional craftsmanship and technology, with jewels made from USB cables, worked with resins set on silver plates and laser engraved to simulate the appearance of modern fossils.

The opposite, in a sense, of the design inspired by the natural world of Annachiara Zani, a young recent graduate of the IED in Milan and nominated for the Klimt02 New Talent Award: she uses alabaster, a semitransparent stone. Against the light, her jewels reveal, behind their elliptical shape, the inscription Visible. The German artist Karin Seufert presents pendants constructed from small points of PVC, empty shapes that have the illusion of weight and recall architecture. The porcelain brooches, on the other hand, follow a continuous search for wearability obtained through the use of uncommon materials in the field of jewelry. Finally, Laura Forte’s gold and silver jewels are characterized by essential lines and shapes, combined with the minimalist style of Yoko Takirai.

Jewels that amaze on display

Beauty and Astonishment is the name of the avant-garde jewelry exhibition in which 26 designers from different countries participate. The exhibition, curated by designer Luis Acosta, continues until 30 June 2021 at the Galería Context in Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona, Spain). The event brings together the work of designers in search of new forms and, almost always, with unusual materials for the world of jewelry. In addition to the classic bronze used by designers such as Laura Volpi, materials such as slate or deer bones are added. In any case, it offers the possibility of a glimpse into a type of jewelry that is not the main stream one.

Experimental jewelery in Milan

Artistic, contemporary, avant-garde jewels in an exhibition in Milan ♦

Contemporary jewel, artist’s jewel, experimental jewel. All three of these concepts are summarized in the third edition of Walking Treasures organized in Milan by Esh Gallery. The exhibition includes jewelry designed and made by designers such as the Hungarian Orsolya Losonczy, which combines precious metal with raw minerals, or the Israeli Daniella Saraya, a young designer with creations composed mostly of stones and natural elements. The German Carina Shoshtary, on the other hand, started a research on the properties of color and its physiological effects through unusual materials, such as pieces of recovered graffiti and peels of vegetable elements.

The concept of metamorphosis is instead the starting point in the creations of the very young Sara Barbanti, winner of the latest edition of the Joya Award 2018: her jewels are mainly made of wood transformed into charcoal, based on the contrast between poor materials and precious metals. organic shapes and clean geometries, lights and shadows. Also Lodovica Fusco creates jewels reworking elements collected in its territory and in the technique used by Lucilla Giovanninetti and Valentina Caprini that transform textile elements into precious jewels.
The new collection inspired by the punctuation of Eleonora Ghilardi will also be presented, which will be compared with the geometric jewels of Yoko Takirai and the simplicity of Laura Volpi’s creations.

Laura Volpi between earth, air and movement

/

Laura Volpi, designer between sculpture and goldsmithcraft who experiments new ways ♦ ︎
Milan, city of design. It is also the city of Laura Volpi, a goldsmith who graduated in scenography at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera. Combining sculpture and jewelry, Laura Volpi has created a style that is a bridge between the two creativities. Or, better, it has the ability to create miniature and wearable sculptures. It is no coincidence that in his curriculum he cites specialization courses at the Tam Center with established artists such as Arnaldo Pomodoro and Davide De Paoli, as well as his studies in London at the Slade School of Fine Art.
An example of his path is the collaboration with Côme Touvay, a French textile designer. Together with him, Laura Volpi presented a new jewel proposal: the Duetto bracelet, made of silver and fabric. She sculpts the silver elements, while he weaves these elements between them and stops them in the fabric, integrating with the plot the sense of movement given by the individual elements. The idea, according to the designer, is that of a «contemporary jewel that explores the sense of movement and fragmentation of images. The silver parts are single parts of a single image, visual fragments that evoke a unique shape, the weaving made of six strands (raw linen, silver thread, cotton, silk, mohair) interweaves the threads looking for a visual dynamicity some threads go back to the surface, suspended». In short, even language is more similar to that of art than to that of simple goldsmithing. Lavinia Andorno
