Kimberly McDonald’s natural stones

The stones, often rough, but of exceptional impact, by Kimberly McDonald ♦ jewels

Kimberly McDonald is also famous because many of her jewels went to brighten up famous clothes and skins: from former First Lady Michelle Obama to Cameron Diaz or Melissa McCarthy. But in reality her passion didn’t start with celebrities: she was born in North Carolina, she grew up collecting agate and geodes. In short, as a girl she was a lover of minerals. And this fixed idea of her stuck in her head: just look at her jewels, which seem inspired by the mineral department of a natural history museum. Her jewels, in fact, are known for the design that she uses geodes, agates, opals and diamonds in a natural version. In any case, the idea was liked.

The idea, however, liked. “Whenever the First Lady Michelle Obama wearing my jewels i am full of pride,” she confessed. “I know that she has the ability to select anything you want. And I respect her a lot and I appreciate that you have chosen my work on several occasions”. Perhaps Michelle, who is a nature lover, loves it was just the style of the jewelry, which also uses raw forms: geode, opal, emerald and agate are the first four materials with which the collections are made. That does not mean that they are less sexy, as you see in the video on this page.

The rocky jewels of Kimberly McDonald

Kimberly McDonald sells her jewelry in her boutique located on the legendary Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. But more than at the studios, the American designer is attracted to rocks. Or, more precisely, from the geodes, that cavity found inside some rocks of a tendentially spherical shape, and which are covered with crystals. These minerals are very beautiful to look at and Kimberly thought of using them for her jewelry. Also because the designer is convinced that the stones hide a natural energy.

The designer started her business in 2007, after a career as a consultant for high-level jewelry collectors. Kimberly loves nature in all its forms, from animals to rocks, which are often used in an almost raw state together with recycled gold and diamonds, a tribute to sustainability. The fact of using crystals and almost rough rocks also has the consequence of making the jewels unique. Quartz’s geodes, and opals or agates are the three favorite stones. Michelle Obama, Cindy Crawford and Cameron Diaz are three of the celebrities who appreciated the designer’s jewels.

/

Muzo’s emeralds for 25 designers and one hundred surprising jewels. Here is the result ♦ ︎

Put the children of colored pencils in childrens hands and you will see them draw. Give to a mechanic to screwdriver and the car will be dismantled. Distribute emeralds to a group of designers and you will see surprising jewels. This is what the Colombian mining company Muzo Emerald has done. The initiative is not strange: periodically, the mining companies give to designers their gems to special work.

Muzo has thus delivered emeralds to 25 jewelers including Alexandra Mor, Coomi, Daniela Villegas, Erica Courtney, Kimberly McDonald, Lisa Kim, Mateo, Noor Fares, Selim Mouzannar, Spencer Fine Jewelry, Victor Velyan and Wilfredo Rosado.

Result: a series of jewels that use emeralds in a very modern way. To be clear: no rings with an emerald with emerald cut. Also because the green stones have different shades and qualities. In all, a hundred pieces of different value were conceived. It ranges from about $ 2,000, to the Selim Mouzannar necklace which costs almost $ 120,000. And, according to Muzo, the experiment will continue: 2019 will be a bright green year. Margherita Donato
