Record earrings of 57.4 million

A pair of blue diamonds and a rose sold by Sotheby’s for a record $ 57.4 million. And it is also a record for a Piaget ring ♦
A mythological record. To mark a new star price for jewels were Apollo and Artemide. No, they are not the gods of Olympus, but divinity of jewelery: Apollo and Artemis enchanted the sale of Sotheby Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels in Geneva. The two diamonds got the best price ever on auction for a pair of earrings: $ 57.4 million. The buyer (for now anonymous) has subsequently renamed them. The fancy vivid blue diamond is now called The Memory of Autumn Leaves, while the intense pink fancy has been named The Dream of Autumn Leaves.

A pretty expensive poem. The two diamonds were sold separately. The vivid blue fancy, 14.54 carats, for 42 million, while the pink diamonds, 16 carats, for 15, 4 million. «It has been a privilege for Sotheby’s to be entrusted with the superb Apollo Blue and Artemis Pink, which have now been renamed The Memory of Autumn Leaves and The Dream of Autumn Leaves», commented David Bennett, world president of the international jewelery department and chairman of Sotheby’s Switzerland. «The results from today’s sale – which saw more than 90 per cent of lots sold and three new world auction records – yet again underline the strong demand for top quality diamonds, gemstones and jewels. I am delighted that the stones will remain together as earrings. This has been a wonderful inaugural jewellery sale at Mandarin Oriental, Geneva which far exceeded expectations, with a total of over $150 million. We are greatly looking forward to the upcoming auction of Fine Jewels at Sotheby’s rue Diday in Geneva on the 1st of June».
The purple color
As mentioned by Bennet, in fact, the auction marked a third record. An intense purplish pink fancy, 7.04-carat yellow, mounted on a Piaget ring, was awarded for $ 13.3 million, with a price tag of 1.9 million.
Lots 272 – 326 were also highly appreciated, including a private collection with precious pieces and gems of great value: they were sold for 15.9 million double the estimate. 96% of these lots were sold. A 32.42-carat-shaped pear-shaped Harry Winston diamond doubled its estimate and was sold for $ 3.3 million. An emerald ring, always of Harry Winston, has quadrupled its estimate to $ 929,465. A brooch with rubies and diamond sets and a pair of Van Cleef & Arpels clip earrings totaled $ 477,551. Federico Graglia

Apollo and Artemis: the Sotheby’s divinities

Two Greek gods in the form of blue and pink diamond up for auction at Sotheby’s in Geneva ♦
The match among auctions takes place, as usual, in Geneva. One day before the Christie’s auction, will be the turn of Sotheby’s on May 16 to put on sale the Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels at the Mandarin Oriental. And, as always, there will be an exceptional piece to fly the imagination of collectors: Apollo and Artemis Diamonds. They are not two Greek gods descended from Olympus, but two diamonds, one is Fancy Vivid blue, the other is deep pink Fancy. The two stones are cut pear-shaped and have been used for a pair of earrings, which Sotheby’s has defined as the most important appeared in the auction. But they are offered separately. The Apollo Blue from 38 million to 50 million dollars, while The Pink Artemis is estimated at between 12.5 and 18 million.
The Apollo Blue is listed as Fancy Vivid blue by the Gemological Institute of America and weighs 14.54 carats, internally flawless: it is the largest of its kind ever to be offered at auction. According to the GIA, Apollo Blue is a type IIb diamond, which includes less than 0.5% of all diamonds. Artemis Pink weighs 16 carats. According to the Gia is a type IIa diamond, the more chemically pure, with an exceptional optical transparency. Not more than 3% of the diamonds mined are colored diamonds and fewer than 5% are pink.
But how come the two diamonds were baptized with names of Apollo and Artemis? It’s called marketing, of course. In Greek mythology, Leto (Latona in Latin), the daughter of Titan and Phoebe, had an affair with Zeus and became pregnant with twins. When Hera, wife of Zeus, discovered yet another betrayal, she wasn’t unable to oust her husband from Olympus, and she has forbidden Leto to give birth on land. Found refuge in Delos, Leto gave birth to Artemis and Apollo. And in Greek and Roman mythology, diamonds were considered tears of the gods.
Next to the two top diamonds, in any case, the auction offers several interesting points. As the riviére diamond necklace that belonged to Princess Anna Murat, or a ring with intense pink diamond from 7 carats, or even a pair of earrings signed Reza rose gold and diamonds, with an estimated 1-1.5 million. Also notable is a ring by Van Cleef & Arpels with one of the considerable weight of 45.74 carat Burmese sapphire. Federico Graglia

Liz Taylor’s jewels come back at Christie’s auction

Christie’s unveils new exceptional jewelry in the auction catalog of 17 May in Geneva
In Geneva, on 17 May, Christie’s will auction a 92 carat exceptional diamond-shaped heart, perfect. We’ve talked about here.
But that day will be for sale also many other interesting jewelry. In addition to those already anticipated in this article, there are others that the auction house has anticipated. Among them, there are some that belonged to Liz Taylor. In December 2011, Christie’s has already put on sale the collection of Elizabeth Taylor with these earrings and bracelet burmese rubies and diamonds signed Cartier. The jewels were part of the parure of jewels given to Elizabeth Taylor in August 1957 by her then husband, Mike Todd. Now are back on sale. The actress was famous for his passion for jewelry. But he was not the only woman with this enjoyable hobby. At the auction in Geneva, for example, you are selling the collection of an anonymous “elegant lady”, who apparently does not like the fame. The collection, however, is really top level. It includes a diamond necklace by Chopard, with a shaped D color diamond weight of approximately 56.03 carats pear (has a rating of up to US $ 7 million), in addition to exceptional jewelry created by Graff, De Grisogono and David Morris.
The space of the virtuous
For those who love the high jewelry, high design, there is a piece signed Jar (Joel Arthur Rosenthal) mysterious as creative maestro of jewelry. American by birth, Parisian by adoption, is considered a creative worship. Her earrings with diamonds are a delicious candy for collectors. An other talented designers is the Indian Viren Bhagat, who from Mumbai produces no more than 60 pieces a year. In the auction there will be a pair of her earrings with diamonds and rubies.
Cartier view from Éric Nussbaum
It has been recognized as one of the most eminent experts of Cartier and was hailed by his peers as “Eye”, an homage to the virtuoso level of its taste and refinement. And now the pieces of the vast collection owned by the expert, who died in 2003, are to be auctioned. It’s an interesting occasion: suffice it to say that the Nussbaum collection consists of over 1,600 jewelry and objects.
The charm of the sixties
The jewelry in Italy has experienced a moment of glory in the sixties. At the «dolce vita» of the jewel it is dedicated to a Christie’s auction section. From Buccellati to Villa or Bulgari, will be offered 40 jewels of that magical time. Federico Graglia

A heart beats for Christie’s

A Christie’s auction in Geneva will be loved by collectors: in fact at the top there is a heart-shaped diamond ♦
The return of the big auction of jewelry, the return of dreams for who only can only leaf through the catalog, return the attention of collectors and enthusiasts. An important event has already been set: at the Four Seasons in Geneva on May 17, is scheduled the next auction of Magnificent Jewels organized by Christie’s. The hammer of the auctioneer will mark the judgment of some 250 jewelery. Meanwhile, the jewelry will go on tour as a theater company to be seen live: after Hong Kong, are in Rome (5-6 April), London April 10 to 12, in New York April 21 to 25 and May 5 to 8, before returning to Geneva.
As often happens, the center is a diamond. Large, heart-shaped, 92-carat, D, Flawless, signed by Boehmer et Bassenge. La Maison de Haute Joaillerie that debuted last year is already a star of the auctions. He works exclusively with large diamonds and the highest quality. And with these super stones creates equally precious jewels. The diamond in question has been baptized with the name of La Legende. It is part of a sautoir of pearls: the whole is estimated 14 to 20 million dollars. It is the largest D color diamond heart shape, Flawless, offered at auction.
Earrings and rubies
Another piece in the spotlight: La Vie Bohème, a pair of chandelier earrings, each with a large marquise cut diamond in suspension and a bow with pink diamonds. Each drop is D color, flawless clarity, perfectly symmetrical cuts. So much perfection is valued at 2-3 million dollars.
Rubies like this, until the mid-nineteenth century, only the ruler of Burma or an individual deemed worthy by the sovereign could have had a 15 carat stone ring like the one auctioned at Christie’s. The Burmese rubies were not exceeded in quality. Historically were extracted in the Mogok valley, in the northern part of Burma, only two miles long and half a mile wide. One of the main reasons for the quality of these rubies is due to the high chromium content in the soil, which makes it extremely saturated red, often referred to as pigeon blood. Another factor is their natural fluorescence which has the effect of making the stone come to life and appear internally illuminated. The ring estimate of 10-15 million dollars. But in the auction there is also a ring with a 14.88 carat Kashmir sapphire, characterized by an attractive blue color and excellent purity of a combination rarely encountered in stones of this size (estimate: 1,000,000 to 1.5000000). There are also pieces that belonged to the wealthy ladies of the last century, such as necklace of Doris Duke collection, heiress and benefactor. The necklace is made of platinum, signed Cartier, who has sold 30 April 1937. Federico Graglia

The precious robot of Van Cleef & Arpels

A jewel-robot that marks the time: the amazing single piece of Van Cleef & Arpels.
There are objects that are not objects, but references. They are fantasies that become solid only to remember something else. For example, the time. If the fourth dimension, that of minutes that flow, in turn serves to evoke another time, you get a fantasy to the square, or a hyperdimension. Complicated? Yet it is the experience you can live meeting the Objet Extraordinaire Automate Fée Ondine. single piece designed by Van Cleef & Arpels, may mark the passage of time, but also evoke the fashion of automata that between late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were an attraction in the royal courts. But in this case more than curious object, is a product of art and ingenuity. It’s been presented at the International Motor Show Haute Horlogerie in Geneva. The Object Extraordinaire has the flavor of a challenge. The plateau is silver plates engraved and glazed, white gold, pink gold, diamonds, pink sapphires. The fairy is made of white gold, diamonds, sapphires, aquamarine milk, plique-à-jour enamel. The silver lilies, enamel, yellow gold, diamonds, yellow sapphires and orange butterfly in white gold, diamonds, pink sapphires, Australian white opal. It is worthwhile to list all of the elements of this surprising gem-watch: the ladybug was made in pink gold, white gold, diamonds, Serti MystОrieux Traditionnel (the patented by Van Cleef & Arpels) of rubies. Finally, the base has an ebony coating. The mode of operation is fun: the automaton mechanism has a mechanical hand-wound movement with entertainment on demand, with five cycles of animation 50 seconds after full charge of the mechanism. To be precise, it is appropriate to say, the mechanical movement is manual winding, retrograde hour, eight-day power reserve. It has only one flaw: it is unique. Giulia Netrese

Sotheby’s is more pink than blue

Festival of pink and blue diamonds at auction by Sotheby’s in Geneva of Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels.
The diamond Sky Blue (8 carats), Fancy Vivid, mounted on a ring with two other colorless stones, highlight of the sale, was sold for 17.1 million dollars. He must have breathed a sigh of relief rod hitter in Geneva of Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels. The blue diamond, in fact, had focused the attention of the media. But everything went smoothly: the sale of jewels totaled 136.4 million dollars, a figure that rises jewelry sales of the 2016 auction house to the record level to 311.5 million, exceeding the 300 million in last year.
“Tonight’s result is a great finalé to what has been yet another phenomenal year for jewellery in Geneva. Earlier this year, in May, we set a world record for any jewellery sale, and tonight the momentum continued, making 2016 the second record year in a row for Geneva. The very best coloured diamonds of all hues remain highly desirable, but tonight pink and blue were undoubtedly the hottest colours accounting for many of the top prices this evening, with new records set for deep blue, fancy light blue and light pink diamonds, and with the fabulous Sky Blue diamond selling for US$ 17.1m – an increase of over 30% on the US$ 12.8m it realised at Sotheby’s in 2012” said David Bennett, chairman of the International Division of Sotheby’s Jewellery.
Several records
But the piece that got the higher price was not the blue diamond, but pink. A Fancy Intense pink was sold for 20.8 million dollars (1.2 million per carat). Perhaps foreseeing this exploit Bennet wore a tie with the same color. Another diamond Internally Flawless 13.20 carat Fancy Intense Pink has reached 16.2 million. Both of these diamonds were acquired by Graff Diamonds. Still pink: a new auction record was set for a Fancy Light Pink Diamond pear-shaped weighing 40.30 carats sold for 7.5 million.
In addition to the Sky Blue Diamond, it was also sold a Fancy Deep Blue. To conquer it came forward nine bidders: After a battle of raises, the diamond was sold for 13.7 million, a new record for a blue debb all types (1.7 million per carat). It’s not over: a second record he did score a Fancy Light Blue Diamond, sold for 2.2 million. Federico Graglia

A Vie en Rose for Christie’s

A pink vivid diamond has realised 18.2 million, and earrings records at Christie’s auction in Geneva.
Christie’s celebrates this year the 250th anniversary. But the sale of Magnificent Jewels in Geneva must have made it feel younger: the pieces beaten totaled over $ 97 million. There was waiting for the top lot: the 9.14 carats diamond fancy vivid pink, pear cut. It has been appreciated: scored the second highest price for a pink diamond pear shaped sold at auction, with $ 18.2 million (16.8 million euro), approximately $ 2 million in carat. The buyer is an Asian private. There was also waiting for the birth of a historic brand like Boehmer et Bassenge haute joaillerie. The earrings Miroir de l’Amour got a new record price for an auction (17.6 million dollars, that is 16.3 million euro). The diamond necklace Le Jardin d’Isabelle, the third piece created by the Maison, was beaten to $ 8 million (7.4 million euro). Now the wait is moved to another pair of Boehmer et Bassenge earrings with diamonds of 11 carats each of which will be sold in Hong Kong on November 29.
In short, the jewelry, perhaps aided by the Christmas season, continue to impress investors and enthusiasts, with many pieces that exceed the estimates. An Art Deco bracelet with rubies and diamonds from Van Cleef & Arpels was bought for 1.3 million or four times its pre-sale estimate. Overall, 35 lots were sold for over $ 1 million. In the sale of Geneva it is also worth mentioning a diamond necklace signed Harry Winston, sold for 9.3 million dollars (7.7 million Euros), a Bulgari ring with 36-carat diamond for $ 4.3 million ( 4 million euro) and a pearl necklace with two wires for $ 2.9 million (2.6 million euro).

Sotheby’s in The Sky Blue

In Geneva, Sotheby’s is auctioning a Cartier ring with an exceptional blue diamond, estimated up to 25 million.
Prepare your wallet, check your checkbook, break the piggy bank pig-shaped: to buy this ring with a big blue diamond, takes a lot of money. If you are interested, tune on the auction of November 16 at Sotheby’s in Geneva. Among the Magnificent Jewels, in fact, there is also The Sky Blue Diamond, 08.01 carats described as a wonderfully light blue, by David Bennett, chairman of Sotheby’s International Jewelry Division. All right, the opinion is interested, but it is the color of this gemstone is really out of the ordinary. No coincidence that this ring has a rating of those tall, between 15 million and 25 million dollars. The price is, in fact, determined by the quality of the stone: the Gemological Institute of America has rated The Sky Blue Diamond the highest color grading possible, Fancy Vivid blue. An assessment that places it at the top, so, between that miserable one percent of all blue diamonds, which are already rare. And more, the stone has been classified as a rare type IIb: comprising less than 0.5 percent of all diamonds of all colors. In addition, there is also the rest: the ring on which is mounted the diamond is a Cartier, which is also offering other colorless diamonds. Recall that another diamond sold at Sotheby’s, The Blue Moon, 12.03 carat cushion-shaped, was purchased at auction for 48.5 million just a year ago. This suggests that a blue diamond carat is evaluated for about 4 million: you do the math. In the same auction also belong jewelry and other precious stones: pink diamonds, antiques, extraordinary rings. We’ll talk about when it becomes available catalog. Federico Graglia

Rare diamonds
In addition to jewelry, at the auction in Geneva will be presented particularly interesting diamonds, including a Pink Fancy Vivid pear-shaped, of 9.14 carats with an estimated of 18 million dollars. This diamond has the advantage of having no trace of a secondary color, which makes it extremely rare and attractive. It is also good to remember that only one in 100,000 diamonds have a deep enough color to qualify as Fancy.
Another diamond, this time colorless. It is the Star of Sierra Leone, discovered the Valentine’s Day of 1972 to 320 kilometers from Freetown, the capital of the African state. It was heavy 968.9 carats, was the fourth-largest diamond, the Cullinan after, the Excelsior and Lesedi La Rona. In its time it was sold, rough, from De Beers to Harry Winston, October 3, 1972, for just under $ 2.5 million. After being cut, has produced 17 gems, with a total of 238.48 carats, including 13 stones are impeccable. This diamond with pear cut was acquired December 26, 1973, by the current owner’s family and is part of the original Star of Sierra Leone. It weighs 21.69 carats and is mounted on a ring from Harry Winston. The estimate is between 1.4 to 1.8 million dollars.
Pedigree noble
Auction there are also jewels of Countess Mona von Bismarck: a bracelet with a marquise-cut diamond, weighing approximately 7.13 carats, made by Cartier is estimated 500 to 700,000 dollars. Mona von Bismarck was a trendsetter. Born in America, in 1899 in Louisville, in 1953 she married in third marriage Count Edward von Bismarck, the grandson of the German chancellor Otto von Bismarck.
Of note is a sapphire and diamond bracelet by Van Cleef & Arpels, includes three stones in the shape of the Kashmir pillow, surrounded by baguette cut diamonds that form an articulated bracelet (estimate: 1.7 to 2.7 million). One of the rings with sapphire offered for sale is set on an octagonal (estimate: 1.7 to 2.7 million) and another sapphire sugar loaf is estimated 1.8 to 2 millions). Federico Graglia

Mouawad arrives in Europe

In Geneva, the first European boutique of Mouawad, one of the gods of luxury jewelry.
It is arrived in Europe, with a boutique, one of the giants of the jewel and, in particular, those with diamonds: Mouawad. If the name does not tell you anything for you means that the high jewelry is more alien to a snowfall in August. But you can remedy: if you live in Europe now you can go in Geneva, Rue du Rhone 8. Mouawad is a kind of luxury jewelry totem with a long tradition behind it. The company is run by the fourth generation: Fred, Alain and Pascal Mouawad, descended from that David Mouawad which founded in 1891 in Beirut, Lebanon, the company now based in Switzerland (but strangely not had a boutique, so far), and a strong presence in Dubai. But in reality the Mouawad’s activities began a century ago between the US and Mexico, where the founder had moved to learn the trade of a goldsmith and watchmaker. From that experience began the adventure of the Maison, which has evenly divided the business between jewelry and watches, more high-end. He was extremely successful, as evidenced by the celebrity parade wearing the brand’s jewelry and amazing gem collection accumulated over the years. One above all: the Diamond Jubilee, 245.35 carats cushion cut, is the sixth largest diamond in the world. Not only. Thanks to the support of the family to the Gemological Institute of America, the GIA campus in Carlsbad (California) is entitled to Mouawad. Federico Graglia

Christie’s sells 2 pieces of Boehmer et Bassenge

Two exceptional jewels signed by Boehmer et Bassenge will be sold at Christie’s.
The house Christie’s has been chosen by Boehmer et Bassenge to launch their new Maison of fine jewelry based in France. And the debut goes with the introduction of two exceptional jewels from their first collection. In short, a star is born and is located straight above the sky of Paris. The Maison is named in honor of Charles Boehmer and Paul Bassenge, Parisian jewelers of the eighteenth century, they created a series of exceptional diamonds and a necklace historically famous during the reign of Louis XV. Have you read The Three Musketeers by Alexander Dumas? Have you at least seen on television cartoons of Lady Oscar? Well, just that necklace. The brand was born in 2013 on the initiative of RDH Diamonds, a company based in Antwerp and that, as its name indicates, trades in white stones that make the world go crazy. And first-rate: the Maison works exclusively with large stones, D color, Flawless clarity, perfect polish and symmetry. With this recipe were created exceptional jewels: just a couple of pieces a year. And now Christie’s “is honored to present two, a necklace and a pair of earrings,” premiered in Hong Kong, London, New York and Geneva. The pieces will be included in an auction of Magnificent Jewels to be held on November 15 in Geneva. Warning: will be offered without a reserve price. So that means that each piece will be sold, no matter the final price reached in the room. If you want to prepare …

Miroir de l’Amour are the world’s largest perfect pear-shaped diamond drops ever to be offered at auction. Each drop is a D colour, Flawless clarity diamond of 52.55 and 50.47 carats, with symmetrical cuts. Such perfection is rarely seen. The center stones sit below 30 Internally Flawless D colour diamonds in pear and marquise-cuts weighing 20.41 carats, bringing the total weight of the earrings to 123.43 carats. Estimate of Miroir de l’Amour earrings is US$20-30m. Le Jardin d’Isabelle is a mesmerizing diamond necklace containing three very important D colour, Flawless clarity diamonds of 31.38, 12.11 and 8.07 carats. Composed into a garland of flowers and accented with intense pink diamond bows, it is a necklace of pure quality and magnitude, made from 176 white pear-shaped, marquise-cut and round shaped diamonds, accounting for 91.80 carats. All stones are of D colour and Flawless clarity. With an intense colour, the pink accents are made of 258 diamonds, accounting for 3.92 carats. Every step of the design process is preserved, including the designer’s original gouache drawings which are part of the offering. Estimate of Le Jardin d’Isabelle necklace is US$8-12m.  Federico Graglia

Folies by de Grisogono

The new Folies collection by de Grisogono.
It was a birthday with a particularly valuable, to Fawaz Gruosi, soul and mind of de Grisogono. The party organized in Sardinia by the Geneva jeweler, with the usual celebrity outline, also saw the debut of the Folies collection. As in the tradition of de Grisogono, it is jewelry that combine the concept of luxury with that of refined choice of materials and design. A proper context, that of the party (which we publish some images), with the jewels seem designed just for friends of Gruosi. But the cheerful atmosphere should not obscure the work and the selection of the materials used. As in the case of the one-of-a-kind necklace with diamonds. It was created with white diamonds for over 90 carats, with six stones shaped like a pear. But inside it has a row of blue sapphires, almost invisible, in addition to a number of openwork decoration, with motifs characteristic of the Maison. Another outstanding piece is the ring with a large ruby natural Burmese (unheated) 8 carats, with an oval cut. The stone is surrounded by four jaws realized in turn with rubies and diamonds, while the ring shank is composed of a crown of diamond and by a row of rubies that move like a wave. All it mounted on rose gold. Noteworthy also the earrings composed of two rectangular emeralds hung from a small cascade of emeralds and sapphires. They must be liked guests to Fawaz. Sotheby’s record with Unique Pink

In the Olympics of jewels, where are few competitors in the race, a new world record was won with Sotheby’s Geneva sale of Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels in Geneva: has totalized 175 million dollars (for the lovers of the rankings, previous record was 160.9 million in May 2015). Not only that, the long-awaited Unique Pink, extremely rare Fancy Vivid pink diamond, from 15.38 carat, pear-cut, was sold for 31.5 million, with a price per carat of $ 2,052,094. A lot. The diamond, on the other hand, is considered an extraordinary piece.
David Bennett, chairman of Sotheby’s International Jewellery Division, is satisfied: “Exactly one year after having set the world record for a jewellery sale, Sotheby’s Geneva has raised the bar once again with a great sale and a great result for the Unique Pink. It is difficult to imagine a diamond that better illustrates the term Vivid Pink than this outstanding stone. The colour is simply astonishing and, for its size, it is in my experience truly unique. We set out to curate a sale that would speak to today’s collectors and the response has been overwhelming – confirmation, if ever it were needed, that when you have the right material, demand is as deep as it’s ever been. This was a sale that had the perfect mix of great gemstones and jewels, the vast majority of which were sourced from private collections.” The budget of the sale Geneva is positive: 83% of the lots were sold, three lots have gone beyond the $ 10 million. Six batches over 5 million. Also note an online purchase (Lot 462, a pair of diamond earrings rose) to 6 m million dollars: Internet sales rose by 41% compared to 2015. 25% of the participants came from Asia.
Other notable pieces: a pin with Fancy Intense Blue diamond of 6.64 carats has reached 13, 6 million. A pendant of pink Fancy Diamonds, 18.51 carats, was sold for 9.5 million. But the records were been many (we specify them in image captions). Federico Graglia

Countdown to Oppenheimer Blue

It’s countdown: Wednesday, May 18 is fixed a marathon dedicated to jewelry and extraordinary stones. The Christie’s sale is in Geneva, at the Four Seasons Hotel, with over 280 lots. The auction Magnificent Jewels includes pieces from the collection of His Highness the Princess Gabriela zu Leiningen (we talked about here). But, in addition to a selection of the finest collection of princess jewelry, the sale includes valuable pieces that carry the signature of the most important Maison of the world, such as Cartier, Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels, as well as rarely seen creations by Philippe Wolfers, Gustave Baugrand and Bapst & Falize. With this premise might seem like an exceptional event. But no, it’s also planning the legendary Blue Oppenheimer Diamond, that with 14,62 carats, is the largest vivid blue diamond ever to come to auction. Its estimated cost is 45 million dollars, but it could also overcome the Blue Moon Josephine, a blue cushion-cut diamond of 3.12 carat vivid blue that has set a world auction record at 48.4 million euro in November 2015. The diamond named after the previous owner, Sir Philip Oppenheimer, a member of the family that once controlled the De Beers Mining Company. Federico Graglia

A pear for 38 million

It will be a highlight of the whole season of jewelry auctions: a large pink pear-cut diamond will be sold in Geneva on May 17 at Sotheby’s. It’s so rare that it was called The Unique Pink. The stone combines an extremely rare and sought after color, Fancy Vivid Pink, with a considerable size: it weighs 15.38 carats. The stone is extraordinarily clear and pure. It is the largest pink diamond Fancy Vivid Pink pear shaped ever offered at auction. The estimation of its value portends a caliente challenge among collectors of rare stones: the value is between 28 and 38 million dollars. Will be the star of the Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels in which, however, it will not be the only valuable piece. In the sale, of which we anticipate the first images, there will also be other super stones, as well as jewelry with very value as a spectacular collection of the first creations of the twentieth century by Cartier, as well as pieces coming from private collections. But the princess, who has held the title of Inaara Begum Aga Khan, during the years next to her ex-husband, has put together an extensive collection of jewelry. Many of them will be part of Magnificent Jewels auction in May. For example, the Diamond Pohl: a ring of diamonds over 36 carats mounted by Cartier. It was part of a large 287 carat rough stone. The gem, D color, was sold to Bernice Chrysler Garbisch, the Chrysler family, in 1943. It was then bought by the Princess, by Cartier, in 1998.

(Italiano) Sotheby’s, Blue Moon record

It was estimated at between 35 and 55 million dollars: the blue diamond, codenamed Blue Moon, was sold by Sotheby’s in Geneva for a median figure, 48.5 million (45 million euro). It is not the maximum, but it’s a new world auction record for a diamond of this color. The Blue Moon was sold, in fact, for over $ 4 million per carat, an unprecedented level. The stone is one of the largest fancy vivid blue diamond in the world, and has a weight of 03.12 carats, perfect internally. He also beat the previous record, held by Graff Pink (24.78 carats), sold in 2010 for 46.2 million dollars. Sign, in short, that the fever for colored stones continues unabated: just remember that last year Zoe Diamond, another blue stone, it was sold in New York for 3.3 million per carat.
More generally, the auction of Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels has totalized 139 million, only slightly below the record for an auction of jewelry, set at Sotheby’s in Geneva in May. Among the pieces out, a ring with a superb Fancy Vivid Purple-Pink Diamond, sold for 13.9 million dollars, auction record for a diamond of this type. Even sapphires go very well. A ring with sapphireVery Fine and diamonds has more than doubled the pre-sale estimate, to 3.2 million. Even a brooch with ruby, sapphire and diamond Van Cleef & Arpels has exceeded expectations presale, passing from hand to 2.5 million, nearly five times its lowest estimate.
Of note is the tiara of diamonds, by Cartier, dated around 1909, sold for 799mila dollars, almost doubling its highest estimate. The tiara has an adventure story: was commissioned to Lady Allan from her husband, Sir Hugh Allan, and it survived at the famous naufragio of the Lusitania, together with its owner, in 1915.

Federico Graglia

(Italiano) Una super asta regale da Christie’s

Sorry, this entry is only available in Italian. For the sake of viewer convenience, the content is shown below in the alternative language. You may click the link to switch the active language.
