The Gulf War of jewellery

Calling it the Gulf War is undoubtedly an exaggeration. The fact is, however, that a trade dispute has just been fought in the Arabian peninsula. On the one hand Jewellery, Gem & Technology in Dubai (JGTD), scheduled for February 12-14. And a few days later, from 20 to 25 February, the Doha Jewelery and Watches Exhibition. The United Arab Emirates (Dubai) and Qatar (Doha) are only 600 kilometers apart, but the two countries are not hiding differences of opinion, even if there is no real hostility. But these are geopolitical matters. The almost concomitance of two fairs dedicated to jewelery a few days and a few kilometers apart is, however, quite curious.

The organizers of both events underline the success of the respective fairs. The JGTDs, specifies a note from Italian Exhibition Group, co-organizer of the Dubai event together with Dubai Multi Commodities Center and Dubai Gold and Jewelery Group, saw a 20% growth in the number of buyers, with participants from 95 countries and regions. The fair hosted almost 350 suppliers in an expanded exhibition space, 46% larger than the inaugural edition, including companies of finished and semi-finished jewellery, loose precious stones, technologies related to jewellery.

Doha, for its part, responded with the presence of jewels and watches from over 500 brands (visitor numbers are not known at the moment). And he advertised the visit as ambassador of the Russian model Irina Shayk, with a couture dress by Alaïa, bracelet and a ring from the Bulgari Serpenti collection. Among the flagships of the event was also presented a special collection from the Hussein Alfardan Gallery, a personal collection of natural pearls belonging to Alfardan Jewellery. For Louis Vuitton, on the other hand, the Fantasy necklace made its debut, a 2.56-carat flower-cut monogram diamond. And Valentino has collaborated with the Qatari foundation Education Above All (EAA) to present a collection of limited edition accessories signed by the maison.

The agreement is summarized in the creation of a commercial company, Gismondi Jewelery Qatar, whose focus is on business development for both the retail and wholesale channels.

Not only that: the program includes new openings, with Gismondi 1754 brand shops throughout the area. The first scheduled opening is already on the agenda for next June in Doha, the capital of Qatar. Subsequently, in chronological order, the openings will follow in Riyadh and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, and then those in Kuwait, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
The Al Mana family links its history to the world of Qatari entrepreneurship with the Al Mana Group, a company founded in the 1950s and today one of the most important companies in the country, with interests in multiple sectors, including luxury goods. It is therefore an agreement with great added value for Gismondi 1754, which will have the opportunity to expand its presence and the sale of its jewels in the Gulf area more quickly and effectively.
Doha, capitale del Qatar

We are very honored to have reached this agreement with the Al Mana family, whom we thank for making our collaboration possible, which is particularly strategic for our brand. Qatar, as well as the Arab countries of the Gulf, have already shown for some years that they greatly appreciate our jewels and opening a franchise channel directly in that area will only favor the development of a well-structured retail and wholesale market that will give great satisfaction . 2023 will be an important year for the international development of Gismondi 1754, not only towards the Arab countries, but also in the USA and in Europe, including Italy. Europe and Italy, in particular, are relatively new markets for us, but where we are increasing openings given the excellent results achieved in 2022 and where we are confident of significant growth.

Sicis has a dedicated section within the Alfardan Jewelery stand and presents some news: multicolored butterflies, one of the favorite subjects in the Sicis Jewels collections.

These are rings that are the fruit of the creative passion of the artistic director Gioia Placuzzi. The jewels have a particularly realistic and detailed decoration, distinguished by a different color of sapphires in combination with white diamonds. Also new is the Ribbon collection, with rings and necklaces in the shape of a bow, with a shape inspired by the dresses of the famous Degas dancers. A different colored stone with an octagonal cut characterizes the design of each piece. The Doha event is also an opportunity to show iconic pieces of the brand, such as the Damisa necklace, which depicts a jaguar covered with micromosaic and sapphire flakes, holding an imperial topaz between its paws. Or the Quetzal set, inspired by the bird of the Amazon rainforest. Finally, collectible watches, such as the Gardenia with multicolored petals or the men’s timepieces from the Memento Mori series.

In Doha the most beautiful jewels

Jewelry lovers who are in Doha, capital of Qatar, have a unique opportunity: the Doha Jewellery & Watches Expo (until 28 February). Jeremy Morris, London jeweler of David Morris, described the fair as “the best show of jewelry in the world.” There are about 500 big of luxury jewelry and watches. For example, there are Avakian, David Morris, David Webb, Backes & Strauss, Chopard, Christian Dior, Theo Fennell and Richard Mille, but also Italian brands such as Bulgari or Pasquale Bruni, who presents Lotus Flower, by Mandala collection. Spotlight on Graff, present with a necklace of fine jewelry with rubies and diamonds from 278.55 carats, in a pendant as a tassel. Note that, compared to last year, the space dedicated to the exhibition is increased by 25%: 25 thousand square meters, a sign that the decline of the oil has not shaken the desire for luxury and jewelry among the sheikhs of the Gulf.
