The snakes by Ole Lynggaard

/

In Paris Ole Lynggaard presented three pieces of high jewelery. A surprise for the Danish brand, which focuses on design for its jewels that have a very extensive price range. The three high-end solitaires are crafted with fancy vivid yellow diamonds. For these pieces too, design remains the fundamental trace, as it is in the tradition of the house. The new jewels are also a way to celebrate a near milestone, the 60th anniversary of the Maison.

The Danish company, in fact, was founded in 1963 by Ole Lynggaard and his wife Karin, and immediately proposed jewels in 18-karat gold and sterling silver, with white diamonds or large gems with intense shades, as in the classic Snake collection. . Today Charlotte Lynggaard is the jewelry designer, while her husband Michel Normann is chief commercial officer. The two, among other things, lived in Paris for three years before returning to Copenhagen: the presentation of the new rings, in short, also marked the return to a city they know well.a

A yellow diamond for Rubinia

Yellow like mimosa flowers, but precious like a diamond. Because, in fact, it is a diamond. The Milanese brand Rubinia turns 35 and to celebrate it has added a fancy yellow diamond to its iconic Filodellavita ring in a collection of 99 pieces. The idea comes from the founder of the small Maison Roberto Ricci.

Anello della linea Filodellavita con diamante fancy yellow
Anello della linea Filodellavita con diamante fancy yellow

I decided to choose the one that represents the Olympus of precious stones for this collection. If the diamond is the most extraordinary and desired gem, natural fancy color diamonds represent the pinnacle of prestige and fantasy. Colored diamonds are a real rarity, so much so that they are considered miracles of nature: just think that they represent only 0.01% of the total number of diamonds present in nature. At this particular moment for the whole world, I wanted to tie myself to a line that speaks more than ever of the uniqueness of life through yellow diamonds. And I could only choose the Filodellavita collection as the ideal custodian and custodian for this dream.
Roberto Ricci

Yellow diamonds, in the sign of traceability, are supplied by Diamwill, a Belgian company specialized exclusively in fancy color natural diamonds for over 35 years, which is able to guarantee its customers the highest quality and transparency of information. The yellow diamonds of this collection are therefore accompanied by a guarantee certificate of authenticity and origin. In particular, these diamonds originate from the Namibian desert and meet the requirements of the Kimberley Process.

A super diamond for Tiffany

//

A great diamond for a great jewel. Who knows if the 80-carat super diamond purchased by Tiffany is the echo of a grandeur with a French flavor, given that the announcement follows the conclusion of the operation that brought the American Maison into LVMH‘s orbit within hours ago? But this would be a mischievous deduction.

In any case, Tiffany & Co has announced the re-edition of a historic high jewelery necklace made in 1939. The original jewel, however, mounts an aquamarine, while the new necklace will be enriched with an oval diamond of over 80 carats, the largest diamond ever proposed by Tiffany, surpassed only by the Tiffany Diamond (which is not for sale).

The diamond necklace will be unveiled in 2022, to celebrate the reopening of the refurbished Tiffany Fifth Avenue flagship store, and will go down in history just like the original necklace, which was unveiled at the Universal Exposition in Queens, New York.

What better way to celebrate the reopening of the Tiffany flagship store in 2022 than to reinterpret this incredible necklace from the 1939 Universal Exposition, one of our most famous jewels that dates back to when we first opened our doors between 57th and Fifth streets Avenue. The new necklace perfectly reflects our tradition as a New York luxury jeweler whose founder was known as the King of Diamonds.

The oval diamond of over 80 carats has a degree of purity IF, color D. It is a very rare quality but, underlines Tiffany, it is also the symbol of the approach adopted for the traceability of diamonds: the Maison is the first company in the sector to adopt this policy. The diamond is sourced from Botswana, Africa, from a responsible supply chain, and will be mounted by Tiffany artisans in New York.

The original necklace, called Dawn of a New Day, was shown at the 1939 Universal Exposition and also served to set the stage for the opening of the iconic flagship store between 57th Street and Fifth Avenue the following year, the 1940.

The 6 things to ask before buying a jewel

/

Here are 6 things to ask your jeweler before buying jewelry. You will surprise him ♦ ︎

Do you need to buy a jewel to give as a gift? For example, a ring with the classic diamond, or with another precious stone? Are you worried? Of course, you can ask your jeweler for advice. But have you ever met a farmer who doesn’t say his pears are the best? In short, it is obvious that a jeweler does not underline the possible defects of a jewel, but he tends to highlight its merits. So, if you have yet to buy jewelry with an expensive stone, read this article first: it will advise you what to ask for when you are in jewelry.

Unfortunately it happens, in fact, that in good or bad faith, misunderstandings, wrong choices, or even scams can occur even in jewelry.

Vetrina di una gioielleria
Vetrina di una gioielleria

Most jewelers will not try to cheat you, because they know that guaranteeing transparency and quality also means winning over a customer, who will come back to him. But, unfortunately, in rare cases the opposite happens. Also because the jeweler starts from an assumption: you don’t understand anything about jewels and he can tell you what he wants without fear. And if you don’t usually read what we write on gioiellis.com you could be right.

1 Is the price right?

Let’s start with the price: small diamonds, or small precious stones such as rubies, sapphires and emeralds, under 1,000 euros or dollars are very rarely of high quality. And that’s precisely why they don’t cost much. Of course, who will notice if a small diamond is classified as color E or F? Virtually none. However, asking the jeweler for the certificate certifying the classification of the stone can make it clear to the jeweler that you are not exactly inexperienced. Diamonds, in particular, must have a certificate that guarantees their weight and quality. That’s a good place to start. Of course, first read this article which explains what is important to judge a diamond.

2 Beware of diamonds

So, if you have read our quick guide on diamonds you will also know what to observe. For example, any inclusions in the stone, or the color. Don’t be afraid to ask for a lens to be able to better observe the jewel, of course if it is a piece that has a certain price. A tip: in the case of a diamond ring, the defects are usually hidden at the bottom, for example where the prongs that hold the stone are located.

Osservate il diamante con una lente
Osservate il diamante con una lente

3 The hidden part

Looking where you don’t usually look is the third important thing. Look carefully at the lower part, the less visible part of a jewel, not only in the case of a ring, but also of a necklace or bracelet. For these two types of jewelry, for example, it is good to carefully check the closure system: it must be sturdy, but elegant, to allow you to fasten or unfasten the jewel with ease, but without the fear of it accidentally opening. In short, the quality of a jewel must be impeccable even in the invisible parts.

4 Look for the numbers

Another aspect to check: the engraving (punching) that identifies the type of metal used, usually expressed in thousandths. For example, 999 is used for pure silver, while 925S stands for sterling silver, that is 92.5% pure, while the remaining 7.5% is copper. Plat or Pt is instead the acronym that identifies platinum: also here 999 means that the metal is pure. Also for gold, pay attention to the numbers: for example, 750 means it is 18-karat gold, 585 means 14-karat gold, 375 9-karat gold, the least precious alloy of all. This is also important because it indicates that the jewel is composed of other metals, for example nickel (for vintage jewelry), which can cause allergies.

All'interno dell'anello in argento è visibile la punzonatura con il 925
All’interno dell’anello in argento è visibile la punzonatura con il 925

5 The color trick

To improve the appearance of the jewel, manufacturers use many tricks (usually legitimate). One of them is to associate a colored metal with a stone of a similar color. For example, a rose gold ring will make the color stand out more than a simple rose quartz. A brown diamond, which is the least valuable type, may appear more lemon-colored, therefore more expensive, if it is set in a yellow gold ring. So, pay attention to the combinations. Another trick to making jewelry more desirable is to combine different stones or materials in layers. For example, increase the volume of a cabochon by inserting a layer of mother-of-pearl or a less precious gem under the stone. It can be done legitimately, but it is correct that it is communicated to those who buy the jewel.

6 Prongs or bezel?

For a ring it is easier that the stones set (ie surrounded by a metal band that hides the edge and the lower part) can hide some defects. On the contrary, a beautiful stone is usually mounted keeping every part of it in view as much as possible, even the lower one, as in the case of solitaire rings set whit prongs. This is not a general rule, but it is good to know.

How to choose the Tiffany spot lighting

//

Guide to the choice of pendants spot lighting by Tiffany: a selection of ten necklaces with the prices ♦ ︎

Spot lighting. This is the name of the jewel that draws the eye to a single, small but important detail: a circle that usually contains a diamond. They can be earrings but, more often, they are necklaces. The spot lighting is important because it does not distract, it is simple and, therefore, it can be worn almost always, and is the ideal complement for a neckline. There are many jewelry brands that offer a necklace with a spot lighting. To make an idea, we have selected ten necklaces with Tiffany’s light point, one of the most requested brands. In brackets: it is a choice of gioiellis.com, not a sponsorship of Tiffany.

The ten models we have chosen have an updated price in December 2020.

There are many necklaces with a small or large diamond proposed by Tiffany, which in addition to being the largest jewelery company, which has recently passed under the banner of the French group LVMH, is perhaps the one with the largest catalog available. We have selected ten necklaces taking into account an increasing price. However, those at a lower price are in silver and not gold. Also keep in mind that the diamonds set in these necklaces are very small, in proportion to the price. In any case, a diamond, even if small, always manages to reveal some reflection of light that magnetizes the attention. To you the choice. Lavinia Andorno

How to choose diamond’s ring

Round, square, heart-shaped … What is the shape of the diamond you like best? Here is a brief guide on how to choose the right diamond cut for rings.

How to choose the diamond for a ring? Small or large: it depends on the money available, all right. Well, of course, it is an important criterion, but it is not the main one: we have already talked about the characteristics of the stone, but now it is time to decide which cut is most suitable. Because, if the cut of a diamond is perfect, the stone reflects the maximum amount of light and therefore has a great impact on the final appearance of the ring, which should be adapted to the personality that receives it. Or the idea of who gives it away. So what is the best diamond shape? Here is a small guide to the main diamond cuts.

  1. The quality of the diamond matters, but in some cases (especially for smaller stones) the difference between the different classes that serve to define the appearance of a diamond is imperceptible. For this, for example, there are also small and inexpensive diamond jewelry. Of course, for a 1-carat diamond the difference between color D and H can also be seen with the naked eye.
  2. Requires certification: diamonds must be guaranteed by a gemmology institute that certifies the weight and characteristics of the stone.
  3. The origin of the diamond is not a secondary aspect: there are more and more jewelry brands that guarantee that diamonds are extracted in an ethical and environmentally sustainable way.
  4. Don’t expect to find uncommon cut diamonds in low-priced jewelry: in most cases the stones will be circular in shape.
  5. A one-of-a-kind diamond jewelry is more expensive, but it can probably be worth more when sold.

Brilliant (round cut)

Why: The brilliant cut is the most popular in engagement rings because it offers perfect sparkle. In addition, it has a regular shape, which fits well into that of a ring. Furthermore, the circular cut of a diamond never goes out of style. Indeed, it can be said that the brilliant cut of a diamond is considered almost natural for this type of stone. In short, you can never go wrong with a diamond.

For whom: This diamond shape will certainly be appreciated by those with a classic taste and love of tradition. But, in reality, no one will ever turn up their noses in front of a solitaire who mounts a bright brilliant. Furthermore, a round diamond is often surrounded by a crown of small stones that serve to increase the reflections of the central stone: a device that works very well with a gem of this type.

Princess cut

Why: The princess cut gives a superior shine to the round cut and is perfect for naturally elegant ladies, those who are immediately noticeable when they enter a room. In short, it is a very refined cut (not surprisingly it is called princess), but also quite rare. Also because not all rough diamonds are suitable for cutting in this way.

For whom: the woman who wants an unmistakable jewel will like it, perhaps combined with a wedding in grand style, like in fairy tales. But it is also a usually quite expensive cut.

Anello con diamante taglio cuscino
Anello con diamante taglio cuscino

Cushion cut

Why: the cushion cut resembles the boxy shape of the princess, but is softer. It has the shape of a pillow, in fact, and is much appreciated by the British for its slightly vintage taste. In short, it is a traditional cut, which fits well with rings with a classic design.

For whom: the person who wears a cushion-cut ring does not seek attention at all costs, but on the contrary loves a sober, not exhibited, but solid richness. A cocktail, a concert hall, an anniversary party for the wedding will be ideal occasions to wear a cushion cut diamond ring.

Anello con diamante taglio smeraldo

Emerald cut

Why: originally the emerald cut used only for colored stones, especially for emeralds of course. This rectangular cut was later adapted to diamonds as well, and with some success. The rectangular shape, with a wide top and four edges, however, is suitable for stones of a certain volume (and with a high cost). An aspect that needs to be carefully evaluated.

For whom: the emerald cut stands out immediately. It’s for a strong, spirited woman who likes to show off her wealth (or that of her partner).

Diamante blu da 12,11 carati, taglio marquise, montato su anello
Diamante blu da 12,11 carati, taglio marquise, montato su anello

Navette or marquise cut

Why: the marquise (or navette) cut has the same number of facets as the brilliant cut, but it is less common, because it is more difficult to make. In fact, the central area is much brighter than that towards the tips, but if done correctly, the refraction of light, albeit asymmetrical, is of great value. It is said that it was invented at the behest of the Sun King who wished to have a stone in the shape of the mouth of the Marquise de Pompadour (for this reason it is called marquise). Certainly a stone with this cut has been set in the jewels of many royal and aristocratic collections. Also because it has the advantage of being able to be combined with other gems.

For whom: intended for those who want to stand out from the crowd and seek the highest quality. A marquise-cut diamond ring will always look great. It can be the ideal shape for women looking for a distinctive, rare, excellent piece of jewelry. It is expensive.

Diamante ovale impeccabile D Color da 102,39 carati
Diamante ovale impeccabile D Color da 102,39 carati

Oval cut

Why: the oval cut is liked because it breaks the monotony of the round cut, but without exaggerating. It is a modification of the traditional brilliant, but has one less facet. The advantage is that, compared to the brilliant, it makes a stone of the same carat weight appear brighter. On a solitaire ring it reflects light on multiple fingers and is suitable for small to medium hands. It’s not easy to find in small sizes, though.

For whom: It is a type of cut that is suitable for all women. Not too different from the brilliant classic, it is also suitable for those who love tradition and custom. At the same time, it also pleases those who want a little novelty.

Anello con diamante a pera su platino
Anello con diamante a pera su platino

Pear cut

Why: The pear cut is one of the classic shapes for diamonds. It was once a cut used only for large stones, but today it is also accepted for medium carats in the case of the main stone of a ring. Often the pear cut is also used to compose jewels with different stones. To make the most of the diamond must maintain perfect symmetry between the apex and the bottom and the sides towards the tip (as small and sharp as possible) must have the same curvature.

For whom: It is a rather aggressive cut if intended for a single stone. A pear-shaped diamond stands out immediately: it is often worn with the tip facing outwards and this gives it an additional aggressive look, almost like a weapon. Resolute and determined women like it.

Heart cut

Why: The heart cut is not easy to find on the market, although there are brands that specialize in jewelry with this type of cut. The heart is a kind of romantic version of an oval diamond. Its particular shape is a perfect love dedication. But an equally proportioned and symmetrical stone can be difficult to find.

For whom: The heart, a typical fantasy cut, will be appreciated by a dreamer, romantic, sweet, sensitive woman. There are still some, thankfully.

Marquise-cut diamond, what you need to know

Diamonds with the marquise cut, or navette. All you need to know.

Is it possible to fall in love with a gem that resembles lips? Yes, if it is a marquise cut diamond. A diamond of this type has an elongated shape, like an oval with the two ends ending in a point. But before examining the characteristics of a marquise cut diamond, it is good to know why this shape is called with this name.

Anello con diamante blu di 12,11 carati, taglio marquise
Anello con diamante blu di 12,11 carati, taglio marquise

History. Marquise is a word which in French means marquise. Legend has it that King Louis XV of France (1710-1774), known as the Beloved, invented this elongated shape. According to this story, the king commissioned a jeweler to make a diamond with a cut inspired by the lips of his mistress, Jean Antoinette Poisson, i.e. the Marquise Madame de Pompadour. Et voila, here is the origin. Over time, those who at the court of France could boast the title of marquis loved to show off an elongated cut gem. And who wasn’t noble? Well, he called this type of cut with the name of navette, a French word that means small ship. In fact, it’s a definition that fits perfectly.

Luigi XV ritratto da Louis-Michel van Loo
Luigi XV ritratto da Louis-Michel van Loo

Features. The marquise cut usually uses a 2 to 1 ratio of length to width. But, of course, there can be small variations. This cut uses 58 facets, which run across the elliptical surface with the two pointed ends. In addition to the classic four Cs (color, cut, clarity, carat) symmetry is very important for a marquise-cut diamond: an error in the cut becomes particularly evident: for example, the two tips at the ends must align perfectly.

Diamante taglio marquise di 16,69 carati
Diamante taglio marquise di 16,69 carati montato su anello

The merits. This type of diamond has the advantage of being very bright and, for the same weight, of being visually larger than a brilliant cut diamond. In short, it pays more. In addition, a navette diamond mounted on a ring helps to streamline the appearance of the wearer’s fingers.

Diamante taglio marquise di 16,69 carati
Diamante taglio marquise di 16,69 carati montato su anello

The defects. The best marquise diamonds must have a particularly good color, that is, they must not be classified beyond H or G. Their shape, in fact, can tend to show a more colorful shade at both ends. But there are also those who appreciate this aspect and choose diamonds with more colors. Some experts warn of the possible lack of reflections in the center of the gem, but this only happens in some cases. Another aspect to pay attention to is the greater danger of damaging the stone by hitting it, especially in the two points, which are the areas most at risk.

Orecchini con diamanti taglio marquise

The jewels. In some cases a marquise cut ring is used as a solitaire. A marquise-cut diamond engagement ring is a very refined choice. Much more often, however, this diamond shape is used for jewelry made up of many diamonds. In other cases, navette-cut diamonds accompany a ring with a central brilliant or cushion-cut or emerald-cut diamond on the sides. By the way, not only diamonds can have the marquise cut, but also other gems such as rubies and sapphires.

Successful yellow in Geneva with Christie’s

A large 28.88 carat yellow diamond, rectangular cut, VVS2, was the precious object that obtained the highest price at Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in Geneva. The diamond was sold for 3.1 million dollars. But in second place were placed two jewels by Graff: it is a bow-shaped brooch, also with a huge yellow diamond of over 107 carats in the center, sold for about 3 million dollars and a ring with a central purplish red diamond of just over 1 carat. But the red diamonds are very rare and for this reason the jewel was sold for about 2.8 million dollars.

Sunshine in winter with Bliss

//

Look for the sun when it is autumn. And wear it in winter. It is possible if you choose the jewels from the Sole (sunshine) collection by Bliss, a brand with the most accessible prices of the Damiani group. The Sole collection is proposed as a sister to other lines of the company’s jewelry, such as Rugiada. Like the latter, in fact, it uses a trick to increase the brightness of the jewels and, at the same time, be able to maintain a rather limited cost. The jewels, in fact, are made with very small diamonds, which are surrounded by a metal crown, in white gold, composed of a surface that simulates many rays.

These facets imitate the reflections of the brilliant cut stone placed in the center and amplify its brightness. In short, the design manages to enhance the small diamond without sacrificing too much its brightness. Tiffany’s yellow diamond protagonist of a thriller

A thriller for the most famous yellow diamond: that of Tiffany with an exceptional weight of 128 carats. The precious diamond, mounted on a necklace, will be the protagonist of Death on the Nile, a film based on a thriller written by Agatha Christie in 1937. It will be worn by Gal Gadot, who plays the character of Linnet Ridgeway-Doyle. The jewel obviously plays a fundamental role in the plot of the film. In truth, the book is about a string of pearls at the center of the plot, but the writers have decided to replace the pearls with Tiffany’s yellow diamond. Or, better, with an accurate copy used for the shooting and made by the craftsmen of the American Maison.

The cushion cut yellow diamond has a long history. It was carved from a 287.42-carat rough stone discovered in the Kimberley mine in South Africa in 1877. The cutting process took 12 months and was supervised by George Frederick Kunz, at the time Tiffany’s chief gemologist. When the work was finished, the founder of Tiffany, Charles Lewis Tiffany, decided not to sell it, but to show it to the public in a window of the Maison. Indeed, it has become a tourist attraction, a symbol of Tiffany & Co.’s diamond expertise. Before Gal Gadot, it was worn by Audrey Hepburn and, more recently, by Lady Gaga 1919 February.

Recarlo celebrates with the 10th Line

//

Recarlo celebrates the anniversary of Anniversary. The latter is the jewelry collection dedicated by the Maison of Valenza to the special moments of life. It turns ten. And, to underline the anniversary, Recarlo has created the Linea 10th, which becomes part of the brand’s bridal proposal. This line is now completed with the addition of an earring and a choker. The earring is in a lobe version and is enriched with taper-cut diamonds, that is baguette (rectangular) with a shorter side than the corresponding one, therefore with a trapezoidal shape. These diamonds appear to support the nearby brilliant cut stone.

The pendant necklace is also made the same way, with a taper and a brilliant diamond. And the same shape was used for the rings, with the taper-cut diamonds that in this case are set on the white gold band, culminating in a brilliant-cut stone. The 10th Line therefore becomes a variant of the more numerous Anniversary series.

A super pink diamond for sale

If you like the color pink and have saved at least between 23 and 38 million dollars, you can get ready to buy one of the most precious and rare diamonds ever. This is the 14.83-carat oval diamond classified as Fancy Vivid Purple-Pink, Internally Flawless, Type IIa, the largest purple-pink diamond ever to appear at auction. It will be sold on 11 November at the Magnificent Jewels auction in Geneva at Sotheby’s. Like all large stones, it also has a name: The Spirit of the Rose. And there is a reason why. The name, in fact, is inspired by a legendary ballet by Vaslav Nijinsky, Le Specter de la rose: the diamond was mined, cut and polished in Russia, which is currently the most important diamond producer in the world by volume.

Type IIa diamond, chemically the purest of all diamond crystals, often with extraordinary optical transparency. Less than 2% of all gem quality diamonds have achieved this classification. The light pink rough diamond weighed 27.85 carats: it was mined by Alrosa in the Ebelyakh field, in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), in northeastern Russia in July 2017. It was named Nijinsky, after the most famous Russian dancer. , who in the early twentieth century interpreted Le Specter de la rose in the original performance by the Ballets Russes. The oval shape of the diamond was obviously chosen to ensure that the diamond had the largest possible size. Diamond is classified as Type IIa, and therefore is chemically the purest. Diamonds in this category often have extraordinary optical transparency. But they are also very rare: only 2% of all diamonds fall into this category. Federico Graglia

The Japanese who gives super diamonds to his daughters

A super diamond for every daughter. The Japanese buyer of the 102.39-carat flawless oval D Color diamond, sold at auction at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong, has decided to name the gem Maiko Star, after his second daughter. The same collector had already purchased another 88.22 carat diamond, also from Sotheby’s, in April 2019. In this case he had called it by the name of his first daughter: Manami Star. The paternal gift had a non-negligible price, even if it is not an absolute record: the equivalent of 15.7 million US dollars.

The diamond was offered without reserve, and was the first auction of its kind for a lot of this importance and intrinsic value. The diamond has attracted tremendous interest and a flurry of offers, quickly taking it from 1 million Hong Kong dollars to over 100 million. Some of these bids were also placed online, the highest of which was Hong Kong $ 85 million (US $ 10.97 million). The highest offer ever made on an online jewel. The winning one, however, came with the traditional telephone from a private collector in Japan.

This extraordinary gem did not need the help of a quote or pre-sale reserve to reach the right price, just the instinctive desire of collectors to own one of the greatest treasures on earth. We are grateful to Diacore for their trust and confidence in allowing us to offer this diamond without reserve, the result of which testifies not only to the importance of this diamond, but to the diamond market more generally.

Diamond belongs to the rare subgroup comprising less than 2% of all gem diamonds, known as Type IIa. The eighth king of diamonds at Sotheby’s auction

Super diamond auctions are back. This time it will be Sotheby’s to offer a rare stone for sale: a large 102.39 carat oval D Color Flawless diamond. Only seven Internally Flawless or Flawless D-color white diamonds over 100 carats were sold at auction, the latest of these for 11.9 million dollars.. This is the eighth. The diamond will be offered “without reserve” on October 5 in Hong Kong: it means that the winning bid is the highest bid, regardless of its amount or the intrinsic value of the diamond itself. It is an unprecedented move and marks the first time in auction history that a diamond of this caliber, or indeed any work of art or object of this importance and intrinsic value, has been offered in this way.

It has been a profoundly transformative few months for the auction market. We have been at the forefront of change in the Fine Art and Watches categories, with new and pioneering auction formats, and this season we want to extend this approach to our jewelry sales. The economy offers many opportunities to do things differently: demand showed enormous resilience during the first part of the year and we believe it is time to let the market speak. Diamonds of this caliber attract interest far beyond the traditional pool of collectors. This groundbreaking sale seems like the best way to introduce this exceptional diamond to the world in the current circumstances where travel is limited and serves as a great indicator of the vitality of demand.

This stunning diamond is the best of the best when it comes to exceptional white diamonds and it’s hard to overstate its rarity and beauty. Never before has the appreciation for world-class diamonds been so acute in the world and more and more people have come to realize that something billions of years old and the size of a lollipop can hold so much value a self-portrait by Rembrandt. or a Basquiat. The broader understanding that, being the hardest material on earth, this wonder of nature will survive us for another million years is certainly another factor in the strength of the demand.

The jewels of King Farouk of Egypt

It was thought lost and, instead, years ago the treasure of King Farouk of Egypt was found in the vault of an Egyptian bank: it is 265 jewels including a 44 carat diamond, which is believed be the third largest in the world. Farouk I of Egypt (Cairo 1920 – Rome, March 18, 1965), was the tenth sovereign of the Mehmet Ali dynasty and the penultimate King of Egypt. His reign ended due to the coup d’état of the military led by Nasser, following which the sovereign was forced to abdicate the throne in favor of the newborn son Ahmad Fuʾād. Exiled, Farouk died in Italy in 1965. Many articles have been written about the eventful life of the sovereign, protagonist of the Dolce Vita, and of his secret jewelry collection. Few, however, lingered on the jewelry collection, until someone was put up for sale by auction houses.

Many jewels are exhibited in the Royal Jewelry Museum in Alexandria, which is located in what was the home of King Farouk’s sister, Fatima. These are about 246 objects accumulated by the Muhammed Ali dynasty, then confiscated by the Egyptian authorities at the end of the monarchy. Not all, however, given that two years ago Sotheby’s put on sale three jewels belonging to the king, including a brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels, the favorite brand of Princess Fawzia, another sister of Farouk. For example, in 1939, for her marriage to the crown prince of Iran, Princess Fawzia wore a van Cleef & Arpels diamond and platinum tiara. And other bracelets and choker of platinum and diamonds belonged to Farouk’s mother, Queen Nazli, wife of King Fuad I.

For example, a diamond necklace that supports a flexible sunburst-shaped breastplate, centered on a round stone weighing about 6 carats, set with 118 round diamonds larger than the weight of about 134 carats, accentuated by smaller round diamonds than the weighing about 27 carats, completed by diamond baguettes weighing about 50 carats, was sold for 4.3 million dollars three years ago by Sotheby’s. It is this is just one of the jewels that are part of the treasure accumulated by the Muhammed Ali dynasty, which has reigned uninterruptedly in Egypt for over a century and a half.

Challenge between diamonds at Christie’s auction

What is the price of a 115.8 carat diamond? If you are interested, you can refer to the evaluation obtained at the first post covid auction of Christie’s which took place in New York. The VVS1 quality diamond, color F, 115.8 carat pear-shaped, suspended as a pendant on a diamond necklace, was sold for $ 6.29 million, reaching the experts’ estimate. The maxi diamond was the most prized piece of the Magnificent Jewels auction held at Rockefeller Center, which totaled $ 28.1 million for 87% of lots sold by value.

It is always interesting to note the changes in interest (and price) on diamonds. If the 115.8 carat stone was bought for 6.29 million, an intense blue diamond of only 7.16 carats mounted on platinum was sold for $ 3.85 million: about 50% of the colorless one despite its size is only 7.5% compared to the larger one. In contrast, a 7.65-carat VS2-classed fancy purplish pink, pear cut, diamond mounted on a platinum and 18-carat rose gold ring was sold for $ 819,000, less then others, however above estimate.

Great success for four rectangular Colombian emeralds from 90 to 154 carats. The gems were sold for $ 519,000, tripling his estimate of $ 150,000. To note the appreciation obtained from vintage pieces, as for a pair of gold earrings by Man Ray, which has almost multiplied for ten the value of the estimate, a coral, onyx and diamond bracelet from Bulgari, a bracelet of rubies, emeralds, sapphires and diamonds, by Van Cleef & Arpels and the six jewels of the artist-jeweler, Jar, all assigned with values higher than estimated. Christie’s sells online a diamond estimated $2 million

From books to diamonds that cost millions of dollars: online commerce has come a long way in a few years. Now, also because of the covid-19 epidemic, which has prevented auctions from taking place in the traditional way, even super jewels and gems of great value are offered via the web by auction houses. Christie’s, for example, has decided to break the record for diamonds: on June 16th and until the 30th of the same month, it will sell a large D-colored diamond online. It is the largest diamond ever auctioned online: it has a 28.86 carat emerald cut, VVS1 clarity, type IIa category, the classification for the chemically purest diamonds, which includes less than 2% of all diamonds. The estimate is between 1 million and 2 million dollars.
