Synthetic diamonds for Meghan Markle

//

Meghan Markle wears a pair of earrings with synthetic diamonds. And in Britain the debate starts ♦ ︎

The Duchess of Sussex continues to be an influencer in the field of jewelry. What Meghan Markle wears has immediatly a reflection on sales, not least because Prince Harry’s bride often chooses jewelry for everyone.

Now, however, another type of choice may also weigh: that relating to synthetic diamonds.

Meghan Markle, in fact, during her first visit as Royal Patron for SmartWorks (a charity that helps unemployed and vulnerable women), what has been described as her “most daring to date” jewel, that is a pair of earrings with three drops. The jewelry brand is Kimai, specialized in ethical jewelry: the earrings were made of 18 carat gold and the diamonds are obtained in the laboratory and cost only 315 pounds. A fact that surprised many: are synthetic diamonds quite “noble”? It seems so. And perhaps this time the choice of Meghan Markle will push many women to opt for this type of stone. The choice has already opened a debate in the British press and on the options represented by ethical jewels. On the other hand, the largest natural diamond company, De Beers, announced long ago the opening of a laboratory for the production of synthetic diamonds.
From her engagement with Prince Harry the Duchess of Sussex has always been wearing the latest jewelry trends, from brands like Birks, Missoma and Shaun Leane. And all have seen an increase in sales thanks to the young new member of the royal family.

Double Webster for Swarovski

The Double Diamond collection by Stephen Webster for Atelier Swarovski, with gold and stones created in the laboratory ♦ ︎

Swarovski is known above all for its crystals. But since 2007 he has added to the bijoux made with refined white or colored crystal, even a second brand, closer to the world of classical jewelry. Atelier Swarovski offers jewelry, but with laboratory gems. Now that the diamonds created by man, identical to the natural ones from a chemical point of view, are used more and more often, also Atelier Swarovski proposes a new collection with artificial stones, Double Diamond.

The collection is not only by Atelier Swarovski, but also of one of London’s trendiest jewelers, Stephen Webster.

The collection signed by Stephen Webster emphasizes the ethicality of the diamonds created in the laboratory but also the use of recycled 14 carat gold and rose quartz, also created by Swarovski. The jewels use the octahedron shape, which recalls the natural shape of a rough diamond crystal. The stones are kept inside gold frames. The price of jewelry ranges from about $ 2,000 to $ 11,000. The Sherlock Holmes of diamonds

True or synthetic diamonds? Hrd Antwerp’s detective machines are coming ♦

As we have written several times, among buyers, but also among jewelers, uncertainty increases. The doubt concerns the certification of diamonds, since more and more often artificial stones are so similar to natural ones that the distinction has become increasingly difficult, even for experts. For this reason the game that is played between those who sell jewelry with authentic diamonds and who, instead, uses those created in the laboratory, becomes more tight. Obviously the game is not played when diamonds are declared as artificials from the beginning.

The problem, instead, is to get the guarantee that the ring with solitaire purchased is really, 100%, made with a stone “daughter of nature”.

It is not only an economic issue, since the value of a natural diamond is greater, but also one aspect sentimental: the idea that a stone was created by the compression of continents moving millions of years ago remains attractive to many people.

Now Hrd Antwerp, one of the most reliable gemological certification companies, has developed and commercialized two new diamond analysis tools.

Strumenti per lo screening dei diamanti
Strumenti per lo screening dei diamanti

Objective: to offer consumers a guarantee of quality. Two devices that are a sort of Sherlock Holmes of gemologist, M-Screen + and D-Tect, therefore allow the detection of synthetic diamonds and offer, explains the company, a solution to the most important challenge for the diamond industry. The plus of these devices is, among other things, the speed and precision with which they operate, thanks to technologies based on UV light spectroscopy and photoluminescence.
It should be added that so far the devices designed to find synthetic diamonds, which in large batches sometimes hide in the middle of hundreds of real pieces, were only intended for large laboratories. Hrd Antwerp, instead, thinks that the proposed solutions can be adopted on a large scale, that is, by jewelers. With a guarantee of authenticity that can be appreciated by those who buy a jewel.
