Couture Awards

The winners of the Couture Design Awards

The Couture Design Awards are considered the Oscars of jewelry. They take place during the Couture fair in Las Vegas parallel to the Jck one, and is dedicated to the best jewellery. This year the organizers awarded 14 categories, each of which with three classified. Overall, in short, the jury in charge of selecting the winners identified 42 worthy of mention. The list of winners can be found below. However, there is a brand that is more successful than others: Peruffo. The Italian company ranked first in the Best in Debuting category, but also third in the Best in Editors’ Choice, in Best in Innovative, and again first in the Best in People’s Choice. Another company also collected a double prize, but in a different way. Gismondi 1754 came in second place in the Best in Editors’ Choice category, to which is added the second place of Vendorafa, a newly acquired brand, in the Best in People’s Choice.

Karen Suen, high jewelery in Hong Kong

At the 2019 Couture Design Awards, Karen Suen won the Best in Pearls category award. The designer, among other things, has a predilection for rare conch pearls. But the jewelry designer does not need this recognition to get on the jewelery stage. Karen Suen made her debut in 2007, and has been very successful since then. The elements of the recipe are those typical of fine jewelry: excellent stone, scrupulously executed goldsmith’s, attractive design. But in addition, Karen puts her own personality into it.

A creativity that allowed, in 2013 and 2014, to get another award, this time at the Outstanding Greater China Design Awards. Her brand was renamed Karen Suen in the same year. Between glam and classic jewelry, the design of the brand based in Hong Kong is popular in China, but also in the US and Europe. And there is a reason: her Maison was created in the likeness of the European ones of the early twentieth century, where each jewel is unique in its kind and produced according to the standards of fine jewelry.

Yannis Sergakis, simple architecture

The Greek designer Yannis Sergakis from the jewelery store at the contemporary art exhibition Documenta 14 in Kassel. And the new collection called Solaire ♦
Among the winners of the Awards at the Couture Show 2016 in Las Vegas it is also Yannis Sergakis (you can read the article here). Yannis is a descendant of a merchant family of Greek diamonds. In short, he touched the diamonds when he was child and he is been convinced. So, once he is grown, he made collection of jewelry and continued the tradition of trading. Let’s face it: trading it is a useful job, perhaps even profitable, but not too much fun. Much better designing jewelry. After studying gemology and design at the Gemological Institute of America, Sergakis has therefore worked in the family business until 2004, when he opted for the creative activity of the designer.

Greece is one of the countries that boasts several new generation jewelers and all follow a style that is simplistic to define minimalist, but that certainly is not Baroque. Sergakis is no different: his jewels are richly minimal. Clean lines, gold and diamonds in neat rows. References that he has revealed are the architecture (the classic one, it goes without saying), textiles, people, senses, shapes, feelings. He works exclusively with gold and diamonds. A simple idea, as the shape of the Parthenon, but not for this less than perfect. A collection, for example, is called Solaire and adopts rounded lines, and uses as a sun a diamond that shines surrounded by gold.
But Yannis Sergakis’s work is also considered in the field of art, not just of jewelery. So much so that in June 2017 he participated in Documenta 14, a 60-year-old exhibition in Kassel (Germany), that hosted over 160 artists. Sergakis contributed with two pieces, each in two colors; one for Athens, one for Kassel.

Eva Fehren, luxury and simplicity

//

The jewels in black and white (with a pink and yellow) by Eva Zuckerman, designer of Eva Fehren, who won a Couture Awards: essence of New York ♦ ︎
The world is divided into two: those who love color photos and those who appreciate those in black and white. There are two schools of thought, both of them with good reasons, which also meet in jewelery. There are those who draw only wondrous collections of colored stones and elaborate shapes, and those who prefer simplicity. Among the latter, who are standard bearers of minimal philosophy, is the super New Yorker Eva Zuckerman, who founded Eva Fehren and won the Best in Bridal at Couture Awards 2018. Why super New Yorker?

Because she not only emphasizes that she was born and lives in the skyscrapers, but also has her roots in a precinct Manhattan neighborhood, the East Village. She was born, grown and lived, in short, close to those tall buildings that throw net shadows on the ground. And perhaps this is her source of inspiration: her jewels are agile, with net forms, with no superfluity. Most are also in black and white: dark gold, white diamonds or vice versa. With time it has expanded her offer also to jewelry in pink gold and stones, but always without abandoning its monochrome philosophy, in a perfect mood recalling Woody Allen’s films.

The two faces of Gismondi 1754

The jewels of Gismondi 1754, the Maison in Genoa that won a Couture Design Award ♦ ︎

Fine jewelry and high jewelry: the production of Gismondi 1754 travels on a two-track family-run business based in Genoa. La Maison won the Couture Design Awards in the People’s Choice category. A sign that everyone loved the necklace from the Essenza collection, made with a cascade of diamonds and emeralds. But, alongside unique pieces of fine jewelry, Gismondi 1754 also presented more traditional precious jewels, such as the Dedalo collection, in rose gold and diamonds, with geometric grooves running through the metal. A modern line, current, very European, very Italian design, which follows the most famous Aura collection, where the common thread is instead the concentric circles.

Jewels that will be appreciated besides Genoa, the birthplace of the brand and company headquarters, also in the boutiques of Portofino, Sankt Moritz, Milan, Naples, Prague and St. Petersburg, where the brand is present. Giulia Netrese
