The half million dollar Zip

Diamonds and period jewels like the Zip necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels: here are the results of Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in New York ♦ ︎

A ring with two blue diamonds of 6.7 million dollars. It is the price realized for the most prominent piece of the Magnificent Jewels auction organized by Christie’s in New York. A sign that colored diamonds are still popular, even if the price did not reach the maximum estimate, which was 8 million dollars.

On the other hand, diamonds were still the most requested pieces. A rectangular-cut diamond of 16.33 carats, on platinum and 14-carat gold from Tiffany & Co was beaten to 1.6 million, another marquise-cut diamond ring of 16.69 carats totaled slightly less, 1.45 million, and an oval cut rose diamond ring was purchased for 1.4 million. Other stones have found buyers for figures of just under a million dollars.

The outcome of the sale of jewelry is interesting. The highest price was obtained by a Zip necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels: estimated for a maximum of 200,000 dollars, the piece was more than double: 483,000 green tickets. Instead, the diamond and sapphire bracelet sold for $ 435,000 respected the forecast. The sapphire has also won acclaim for a ring of Bulgari beaten at $ 375,000. And always of the Roman Maison, a multigemma necklace has found a buyer for $ 375,000. Federico Graglia

Magnificent Jewels in New York with Christie’s: here are the most interesting pieces for sale at auction ♦ ︎

As always, as it was and as it will be, the Magnificent Jewels auctions hide pieces that make jewelry lovers go crazy. There is no need for some diamonds in the catalog to add a record to the list of more expensive gems. Jewels and exceptional stones, however, are not lacking at the auction on 16 April in New York organized by Christie’s. In short, the Magnificent Jewels rarely disappoint.
The auction (285 lots) includes a selection of colorless diamonds, colored diamonds and precious stones, along with important signed pieces by Bulgari, Cartier, Harry Winston, Tiffany & Co. and Van Cleef & Arpels.

The king of the sale should be the Twin-Stone Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond Ring of 3.06 and 2.61 carats, two stones valued between 6 and 8 million dollars.

There are also three D-colored diamonds of over 15 carats, including a ring with marquise-cut diamonds of 16.69 carats, color D, type IIa, potentially internally flawless, from the Elizabeth Stafford collection (rated between 1.2 and 1.8 million).

Among the colored diamonds to report also a Fancy Pink Diamond Ring of 6.11 carats (1.2-1.5 million), a pair of Fancy Deep Yellow Diamond earrings of 7.55 and 7.51 carats, a Fancy Intense Yellow Diamond Ring of 37.65 carats and a pendant with an intense yellow diamond of 35.06 carats.

In addition to large stones, the catalog includes significant signed pieces by Bulgari, Cartier, Harry Winston, Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co. and Van Cleef & Arpels. In the collection of Florence and Herbert Irving there are, for example, a Burmese ring with 9.73 carat rubies and diamonds by Harry Winston, a sapphire from Madagascar and a diamond ring of 16.88 carats from Bulgari, a sapphire necklace and diamonds by Bulgari.
From the collection of Jean Tailer come a brooch in the shape of a dolphin with diamonds, sapphires, emeralds and gold by Jean Schulmberger for Tiffany & Co. and a 18.36 carat diamond ring, J Color, VS2, by Cartier. Federico Graglia

Rhapsody in blue for Christie’s

/

A blue diamond on Bulgari’s ring was the king of Christie’s auction in New York ♦ ︎

A ring signed Bulgari with a cushion cut diamond, Fancy Vivid Blue of 8.08 carats and, on its sides, two diamonds with a triangular cut, on platinum. A $ 18.3 million Christmas gift, probably a price not even Santa Claus could afford. Yet the ring was sold at the last auction of December organized by Christie’s in New York. Perhaps the Christmas atmosphere pushed the buyers: the total sales exceeded 69 million dollars. In particular, the attention of collectors and investors has focused on colored diamonds.

For example, a rare 15.56-carat heart-shaped pink diamond set in a pendant was sold for $ 9.5 million.

The fancy yellow 37.87 carat and 36.80 carat diamond earrings, also called Foxfire Diamonds, were also very popular: they are practically two giants mined in Canada by Rio Tinto, and they have been sold for 1.5 million. The color of another 8-carat oval cut diamond mounted on a ring is also yellow, made in 1925 by Gillot & Co, sold for 1.3 million. A ring with a colorless diamond of 28.7 carats, a square cut, has exceeded 2 million. Among the pieces sold and with greater appeal there is undoubtedly a necklace that can be transformed into a tiara. It is made of aquamarines and made by Cartier in 1925: it was sold for 828,500 dollars: this is also an excellent Christmas present. Federico Graglia

The charm of 21 sapphires

//

A necklace of diamonds and sapphires reaches the highest price ($ 14.9 million) at Christie’s auction ♦ ︎

The necklace has been purchased for 14.9 million US dollars: it has 21 cushion cut sapphires from 10.56 to 3.02 carats each, 23 diamonds with the same cut from 4.05 to 1.03 carats, mounted on platinum. It was the highlight estimate of the Magnificent Jewels auction organized by Christie’s in Hong Kong. And so it was. But also a ring with an oval ruby of 10.04 carats, half-moon and circular-cut diamonds, platinum and gold, it is been sold for 7.2 million dollars.

pearls with an oval pink sapphire.

Better they made a pair of earrings with fancy rose cut diamonds of 5.21 and 5.01 carats, sold for 4.3 million dollars. A bracelet with seven octagonal emeralds designed by Edmond Chin for Boghossian has reached 3.2 million dollars. However, some pieces were not sold. Federico Graglia

A $ 50 million pink diamond

//

The 18.96 carat pink diamond costs like other 310 jewels auctioned by Christie’s in Geneva ♦ ︎

Total of the sale inclusive of the buyer’s premium: 110.211.750 Swiss francs approximately 96 million euros, equivalent to 108 million dollars. Very. But it makes an impression that half of this mountain of money resulting from Christie’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels auction is the result of a single jewel: The Pink Legacy, a 18.96-light-pink rectangular cut diamond, mounted on platinum.

The stone, of an exceptional size, of a vivid color, with a perfect appearance, in short, has been evaluated 50 millions, as the all other 310 jewels put up for sale. It was purchased by Harry Winston.

The Pink Legacy
The Pink Legacy

And to say that there were several pieces of great value. In second place for the price realized, a pair of brilliant cut diamonds, but modified as drop, a brilliant blue (8.85 cts) and 8.79 ct orangy pink, on platinum and gold. They were purchased for around 4.5 million dollars. The Egyptian-style pendant necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels, made in 1924, has surpassed the expectations. It is made up of antique and rose cut diamonds, cabochon and calibré rubies, cabochons and emeralds, gilt, onyx, platinum and gold. Award price: about 4.3 million dollars, compared to the maximum estimate of 3 million in the pre-auction.

Anello con diamante a taglio rettangolare di 20,50 carati, taglio baguette,

A ring with rectangular cut diamond of 20,50 carats, baguette cut, on platinum and gold, has priced at 2 million dollars, while a pair of earrings with sapphires signed by David Morris has been beaten at 1.4 million.

A necklace with diamonds and emeralds from Cartier, together with bracelets and earrings, almost reached 1.2 million dollars. The long-standing Cartier tiara, with old-cut diamonds, blackened steel, platinum, dated 1912-1915, sold for $ 480,000, touched the ceiling of esteem.
The price for Jar’s spectacular brooch, Bouquet of Violets, is quite high: 720,000 dollars, while the butterfly brooch of the same mysterious jeweler has stopped at a minimum of 390,000. And at the half of estimate the earrings, again of Jar, in the shape of ivy leaves: 520,000 dollars. Federico Graglia

The blue diamond that amazes New York

An 18 million dollar blue diamond and masterpieces of design among the 370 pieces at auction in New York with Christie’s ♦ ︎

A rare blue diamond, jewelry by Suzanne Belperron, René Boivin, Bulgari, Cartier, Harry Winston, Tiffany & Co. and Van Cleef & Arpels: the Christie’s auction is scheduled for December 5 in New York, accompanied by a simultaneous online auction from 28 November to 7 December.

Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond Ring di 8,08 carati da Bulgari (stima 13-18 milioni di dollari)
Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond Ring di 8,08 carati da Bulgari (stima 13-18 milioni di dollari)

The top piece should be a sensational Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond Ring of 8.08 carats from Bulgari (estimate 13-18 million dollars). According to Christie’s, this stone can be counted among the best blue diamonds ever on the market. But among the 370 lots for sale, there are also other stones of great appeal: a necklace with a heart-shaped pink diamond of 15.56 carats (estimate 9.5-12 million) and a ring with yellow diamond Art Déco Fancy Vivid of 8.09 carats, by Gillot & Co. (estimate: 900.000-1.200.000). Do not miss the classic colorless stones, such as the ring with diamond D classified 28.70 carats, VVS2 purity, type IIa, which comes from the heritage of financier Lee Vandervelde, who died last March: in this case the sale of jewelry will go to benefit of the Children’s Hospital and Children’s Institute in Los Angeles (estimate: 1,500,000-2,500,000).

Next to the super diamonds, for the design lovers Christie’s auction also offers a bracelet, Diamond Tube, by Suzanne Belperron (estimate 200-300.000 dollars).

The bracelet has recently been rediscovered as the important piece that launched the partnership of Belperron and Herz jewelry in 1948. Those who love vintage jewelry, there are also Art Déco pieces by Cartier, a bracelet of coral, enamel and diamonds by Donald Claflin for Tiffany & Co. (100,000-150,000) and Beribboned Heart, a heart-shaped enamel diamond and diamonds bracelet by René Boivin, which belonged to the Andy Warhol collection.

Among the contemporary pieces, in the foreground there are the earrings with diamonds and titanium, the Etcetera earrings (300.000-500.000) and the earrings with Colombian emeralds, pearls and diamonds of Bhagat ($ 150.000-250.000).

Marilyn’s diamond, sapphires by Kashmir

/

Merilyn Monroe’s diamond and an exceptional sapphire necklace for sale by Christie’s ♦ ︎

Myths are eternal, even more if they involve transversely different peoples, different epochs and universal characters. Like Marilyn Monroe. The actress who died aged only 36, on 5 August 1962, remains one of the most beloved figures and, above all, a symbol of femininity. Also with regards to his love for jewels. On November 27th, Christie’s will test the fascination for Marilyn with an auction in Hong Kong.

On sale there is a 24 carat yellow diamond that belonged to Marilyn Monroe.

The Moon of Baroda
The Moon of Baroda

Not only. It is a stone with a story to tell. The diamond is called The Moon of Baroda, is a pear-shaped fancy yellow, which originates from the legendary now-exhausted mines of Golconda, India. The actress wore this diamond as a pendant in 1953, while promoting the release of Gentleman Prefer Blondes movie. It was the film in which she sang Diamonds are the Girl’s Best Friend, a historical phrase (perhaps too much). The myth was also immortalized by an autographed photo of 1953 in which Marilyn Monroe appears wearing La luna di Baroda. The photo is also part of Christie’s auction and will be sold together with the diamond.
The diamond, in addition to Marilyn, was also before owned by Samuel H. Deutsch, a diamond cutter from Cleveland, Ohio, who bought it in 1944 and sold it to Meyer Rosenbaum, president of the Meyer Jewelry Company of Detroit, in 1953. Current estimate is between 510,000 and 765,000 dollars.

But in the same auction appears another special and much more precious jewel: The Peacock Necklace, a necklace of diamonds and 21 Kashmir sapphires for a total of 109.08 carats, estimated at between 12 and 15 million dollars.

The peacock necklace
The peacock necklace

Kashmir sapphires are sought after for their rich cornflower blue color and reminiscent of the splendid shade of a peacock’s neck. Each sapphire of this necklace has been carefully assembled to ensure the creation of a collection of stones that are unsurpassed in beauty and harmony. The central stone weighs 10.56 carats, an absolute rarity in size, since finding a single sapphire of this caliber is tremendously difficult, not to mention the composition of a complete suite of equal excellence. Christie’s in auction with rare pearls and three Jar

The Magnificent Jewels at Christie’s auction in Geneva: sapphires, pearls of historical origin and three pieces of Jar ♦ ︎

There will not be only The Pink Legacy, the 19-carat rose diamond estimated at up to 50 million dollars to attract the attention of collectors on November 13 in Geneva. The auction of Magnificent Jewels by Christie’s at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues provides, in fact, a parade of over 300 jewels. Diamonds, in fact, but also precious stones and pearls, with jewels of historic Maison and contemporary masters like Jar.

For example, the earrings with sapphires of 40.29 and 38.60 carats and white circular cut diamonds of David Morris, or a Panthére of Cartier with diamonds and onyx. Out of the ordinary is also the 16.33 carat cushion-cut sapphire set with triangular-shaped and circular-cut diamonds and a 7.83-karat Kashmir sapphire set among baguette-cut diamonds.

Christie’s also highlights the steel and diamond tiara designed by Cartier, dated 1912-1915.

Tiara in acciaio e diamanti firmata da Cartier, e datata 1912-1915
Tiara in acciaio e diamanti firmata da Cartier, e datata 1912-1915

It brings the brand of creator Henri Picq, who was responsible for some of the most exceptional jewelry made by Cartier in the early twentieth century. This tiara was not only designed by one of the greatest fashion houses of all time, but was also made by one of the best laboratories in the world at the time. After a long history, the tiara was part of the heritage of the von Fürstenberg family until 2015.
Among the pieces of the big names in jewelery, there is an Egyptian-style sautoir by Van Cleef & Arpels dated 1924, in full Egyptology of those years. It depicts a winged scarab, representing Khepri, the morning sun. In antiquity these objects were placed on the chest of the dead as a symbol of resurrection. The cartouche-shaped panel surrounding the scarab remembers those used to write the names of kings in the hieroglyphs. The hawk was the protector of royalty in ancient Egypt.

The three jewels of Jar for sale were purchased by their current owners directly from the Place Vendôme atelier in Paris and will be offered for auction for the first time.

The spectacular multi-bud brooch Bouquet of violets was created in 1993 and includes pink tourmalines, rubies, sapphires, colored and colorless diamonds, green garnets and tanzanites. The butterfly brooch dates back to 1990, while the Ivy Leaves earrings, created a year later, are set with single-cut diamonds in silver and gold.

For pearl lovers, there are some with an adventurous story. Like the pearl necklace purchased by Cartier in May 1920 by Horace Elgin Dodge (1868-1920),a former mechanics who became rich in America producing engines and automobiles. Horace Dodge gave the necklace to his daughter by paying a sum equivalent to 70 million today’s dollars. The origin of the pearls is attributed to the Empress of Russia Catherine the Great.

From Christie’s a 50 million pink diamond

/

An exceptional 19-carat rose diamond on sale at Christie’s in Geneva ♦ ︎

If you like the pink colour, mark this date on the calendar: November 13, 2018. On that day Christie’s Geneva will present The Pink Legacy, the largest and most refined Fancy Vivid Pink diamond ever offered at the auction by the London house. The diamond weighs almost 19 carats, has a rectangular cut and will go on sale at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues in Geneva. The stone comes from the Oppenheimer family and is estimated at between 30 and 50 million dollars. The Pink Legacy will be exhibited on a world tour before being auctioned.

The diamond was judged to be Vivid shade, the highest level of coloration for a diamond, from the Gemological Institute of America.

Vivid colored diamonds are the gems with greater saturation. The rectangular cut is traditionally used for white stones. But also the weight that is considered exceptional: most of the pink diamonds of this color weighs less than one carat. The Pink Legacy is also very pure internally: another extremely rare aspect in pink diamonds, where the color is formed by the pressure and slippage of the crystal lattice that typically causes imperfections in the stone. Furthermore, it is classified as a type IIa diamond, with little or no nitrogen inside, as only less than 2% of the gems. IIA type stones are some of the chemically purer diamonds, often with exceptional transparency and brilliance. One of the most celebrated rose diamonds is the Williamson, found in the Williamson mine located in Tanzania in 1947. It was presented as a wedding present by Dr. John Williamson, the owner of the mine, to the Queen (then Princess) Elizabeth.
Pink diamonds are among the most coveted by collectors. So far only four Vivid pink diamonds of over ten carats have been auctioned. The maximum was reached in November 2017, when Christie’s Hong Kong sold The Pink Promise, a bright oval-shaped pink diamond of just under 15 carats for 32.5 million dollars, which established and remains the record price of world auction per carat for each pink diamond. Christie’s sold Rockefeller’s jewels

The collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller sold by Christie’s for 3.1 million dollars in New York ♦ ︎

The total budget indicates a sale of jewelry for 20 million dollars (about 17 million euros). Who knows if he would have satisfied David Rockefeller, the legendary American banker, who passed away last year, who together with his wife Peggy had collected a lot of the pieces auctioned by Christie’s in New York. The sale totaled 89% of lots sold, 95% by value. The highest price was obtained by a 20.47 carat diamond ring, sold for 2.6 million dollars. A sapphire of Kashmir and a 5-carat diamond ring, by Raymond Yard, part of the Collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller, made 372,000 dollars. But overall, the Peggy and David Rockefeller collection sold jewels for 3.1 million. It should be noted that the proceeds from the sale of jewelry will not increase the current account of the family, but will be donated to charity.
Among the other particularly popular pieces, a diamond necklace with fringes, sold for 1.5 million and the Berlin ruby, ring with oval heated ruby, weighing about 4.59 carats, flanked on both sides by a diamond, sold for 1.1 million (from a maximum estimate of 600,000 dollars). The impressive suite of jewelry signed by Van Cleef & Arpels consisting of ring necklace, bracelet and earrings with peridots and diamonds, starting at $ 80,000, has reached up to 348,000. Christie’s first 50 years in Switzerland

The London auction house celebrates the first half-century of activity in Geneva and selects 50 exceptional pieces, including many jewels and stones ♦ ︎

Christie’s, founded in London in 1766 by James Christie, is the largest auction house in the world. But if has just exceeded the threshold of 160 years (congratulations), still has children around the world. This means detached offices that, over time, have taken on a major importance. Like the Geneva headquarters (with offices also in Zurich), which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2018. A teen age if it is compared to the parent company. But this has not prevented in five decades to beat pieces of great value.
To celebrate the birthday, Christie’s has therefore decided to summarize the years of activity in Switzerland through 50 lots, the most amazing. They are not just jewels, of course, but stones, rings and earrings make up a good part of the best beaten lots. From 1968 to today were sold pieces as the black pearl necklace (year 1969) belonging to the socialite Nina Dyer, ex-wife of Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza and Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, passed under the hammer of the auctioneer. The black pearl necklace, on the occasion, was sold for 580,000 Swiss francs, but almost 30 years later, in 1997, it was re-sold at another Christie’s auction for 1.3 million francs.

There are also historical pieces, such as the earrings with pearls donated by Louis XIV of France to his lover Marie Mancini. Sold in Geneva for 320,000 francs in 1969, they have long been one of the most expensive pairs of earrings in the world.
Christie’s auctions in Geneva, magnificent jewels that attract fans and collectors, have often been moments that have determined international parameters. In 1973, for example, an imperial 31-pearl jade necklace produced 1,250,000 Swiss francs in Geneva, and instantly became the most expensive piece of jade ever sold at auction for the time.
Then there are diamonds that have made history. Like, in 1974, The Star of South Africa. The 47.69 carat gem, brought to light by a young shepherd and sold for 500 sheep, ten oxen and a horse, was sold for 1.6 million francs, an incredible price for those years. Another diamond that left an indelible memory was, in 1980, the Polar Star diamond. Christie’s Geneva sold this 41.28 carat cushioned diamond mounted on a Boucheron ring for a price of 8 million francs. The stone had previously belonged to Joseph Bonaparte.
In short, the jewels and exceptional stones sold in Geneva by Christie’s are many (you can find some on this page). The last of the series reported among the top 50 is the series The Art of de Grisogono, an incredible piece, composed of emeralds and a gigantic 163.41 carat diamond. Really magnificent. A cascade of diamonds at Christie’s

Diamonds, diamonds and more diamonds at Christie’s auction in Geneva: the charm of the most beloved stone is not falling ♦ ︎
A lot of raises, overwhelming estimates, competitions between buyers to buy the best pieces: Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in Geneva was exciting. Overall (but adding the concomitant wine and watches auctions) Christie’s sales totaled $ 98.2 million, with over 2,500 visitors at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues, where events were organized. The three sales have registered, Christie’s says, bidders from 57 countries and with 20% of new participants in the auctions. The Magnificent Jewels auction, in particular, saw 16 lots sold over 1 million, with total sales reaching $ 81.6 million.

Anello con diamante da 50,47 carati di Harry Winston
Anello con diamante da 50,47 carati di Harry Winston

The highlight of the day was a 50.47 carat D-Color diamond ring by Harry Winston. This maxi diamond has been sold for 6.5 million. Other pieces that have attracted a lot of interest are a spectacular 20.49 carat vivid fancy yellow ring, with an almost record price per carat for a total of 5.6 million, a ring with an intense pink 8.52 carat pink diamond sold for $ 6.27 million and an important necklace of emeralds and diamonds of the late nineteenth century, by Tiffany & Co., dated around 1880, originally sold at Christie’s New York, more than 20 years ago and which has realized 1 , 57 million. But, even under the symbolic roof of 1 million, the rises were not lacking. As in the case of the Cartier bracelet with figures of birds, which was estimated at 200-300,000 dollars but sold for 800,000. Four times the basic price. It is appropriate to say that the evaluation has taken off.
Here is the official statement of Rahul Kadakia, International Head of Jewelery: “The inaugural GemGenève jewellery fair attracted a 140 exhibitors and many new faces to Geneva, adding to the spirited activity at the sales all week long. White diamonds, in particular showed great demand, alongside blue and pink stones and top vintage jewels.”
And here is that of François Curiel, Christie’s president of Europe and Asia: “The Spring 2018 auctions marked another successful sale season in Christie’s 50 year long history selling in Geneva. For the last half a century Christie’s Switzerland has connected collectors across the world to experience owning beautiful objects from art to jewellery and watches to wine. 50 years of knowledge and passion has elevated Christie’s into a leading position of the Swiss Art market.” Federico Graglia

The 5 most expensive engagement rings ever

Engagement rings: here are the five most expensive ever celebrity gifts like Paris Hilton, Beyoncé or Grace Kelly. The one with the highest price is … ♦

What have been the five top engagement rings so far? There is no official ranking. There are even cases like that of Paris Hilton, who lost the $ 2 million engagement ring (the latest in a series) that was given to her by her fiancé and promised husband, Chris Zylka. In any case, it is possible to identify the engagement rings that have been awarded and have set a hammer price at a public auction. In short, on many rings given to actresses or famous women you can make assumptions. On these, instead, there is a certainty. So, here are the most expensive engagement rings.

What are the five top engagement rings of the world? You can establish a ranking considering the hammer price at auction or at shop. In this case, here are the winners.

L'anello Trombino con diamante Blu di Bulgari
The Trombino ring with blue diamond by Bulgari

The ring more expensive is signed Bulgari. On 24 April 2013, the «Trombino ring» was sold in London by auction house Bonhams to 7.9 million euro, equivalent to 9.5 million dollars. It is a ring with a 15.30 carats blue diamond. The diamond is cut to cushion within a pavé brilliant-cut diamonds and baguette cut diamonds. Blue diamonds are extremely rare. Over the last ten years, only thirty blue diamonds over five carats were beaten at auction in the world. Few if we compare with the tens of thousands of colorless diamonds sold in the same period. The blue color of the diamond is caused by trace of boron, that makes diamonds semi-conductors of electricity: the blue color is intensified when the diamond is hot. Not only: these diamonds can also become phosphorescent exposed to short wave UV light and project a red glow for a few seconds. The diamond is mounted in a ring Trombino created by Bulgari in the mid-1960s. The ring was bought by Laurence Graff, of Graff Diamonds.

Elizabeth Taylor con l'anello di fidanzamento
Elizabeth Taylor with engagement ring

Diamond ring by 33.19 carat Krupp and Taylor-Burton, sold for $ 8.8 million. The ring was given to Elizabeth Taylor by Richard Burton. The diamonds, Asscher-cut, has long been worn by Elizabeth Taylor, before being sold at auction by Christie’s in 2011 for a price of $ 8.8 million. Originally the ring was owned by the German actress Vera Krupp, wife of industrialist Alfred Krupp.

Beyoncé con l'anello da 5 milioni di dollari
Beyoncé with the $5 million ring

In third place is the Beyoncé’s 18-carat diamond ring valued at $ 5,000,000, a gift from rapper Jay Z. The ring is signed Lorraine Schwartz and features a diamond-cut emerald. The diamond, colorless, is recognized to be one of the best in the world.

Paris Hilton con l'anello porta jella
Paris Hilton with bad luck ring

In fourth place is the ring of Paris Hilton, with a 24-carat diamond worth $ 4.7 million. The heiress-starlet has received the ring from the young greek namesake  Paris Latsis. Their happiness was ended rapidly, but the 24-carat diamond with an emerald-cut mounted on a white gold band retains its charm. Paris Hilton, however, do not have it anymore: after breaking the engagement, the ring was sold at auction to raise funds for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. But for nearly half of its original price.

Grace Kelly con l'anello di diamanti taglio smeraldo
Grace Kelly with the emerald cut diamond ring

In fifth place the Grace Kelly’s Cartier ring , a 10:47 carat diamond, worth 4.06 million dollars, fruit of love of Prince Rainier III of Monaco. This also has an emerald cut diamond, and is known to be one of the best among those produced by Cartier. But if inflation is taken into account, the cost today would exceed 44 million.

Jar and a pink diamond are the stars at Christie’s

A pink diamond and a ring of Jar are the stars of Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in New York ♦ ︎
Spring returns to pink, like peach blossoms and like the diamond that Christie’s sells at the Magnificent Jewels auction in New York on April 17th. The diamond is mounted on a platinum and rose gold ring. It is an 8.42 carat stone, intense rose fancy brilliant cut but «modified rectangular», VVS1 clarity and «potentially internally impeccable». On the sides the stone has two other baguette diamonds. The ring is valued between 4 and 6 million dollars.
But, of course, the auction has other interesting pieces of Maison such as Boucheron, Bulgari, Cartier, David Webb, Harry Winston, Tiffany & Co. in the catalog. It is not necessary to be a millionaire to participate (also online) in the purchase: prices start at 4000 dollars. Among the most popular pieces there are classic jewels, like a necklace of diamonds and emeralds by Van Cleef & Arpels (estimate up to 1.25 million dollars), or rings with big diamonds.
Two rare Jar
But there are also rare jewels and coveted by collectors, like two pieces signed Jar, designer who has fans all over the world. If you do not know him, know that Jar represents the initials of Joel Arthur Rosenthal, born in 1943 in New York in a family of modest possibilities. He graduated from Harvard in 1966, and then moved to Paris. Before joining the Olympus of jewelry, he worked as a screenwriter. She refined her skills with Bulgari in New York, and then returned to Paris where she opened a boutique in Place Vendôme with her partner, Pierre Jeannet. His rare pieces are received almost like an event. In this case, Christie’s auctioned jewels will benefit the Art for Justice Fund, which aims to reform the justice system in the United States.
Jar’s jewels at auction are, therefore, a Moghul style brooch, created in 1999, in silver and 18-karat gold. It consists of a kind of stylized dome with an amethyst pavé surrounding a 14.77 carat cushioned sapphire. The pendant has a border of diamonds and a tassel of natural pearls. Not only that: the back is a pavé of diamonds. Necklace and pendant are valued up to $ 300,000. The second piece is, apparently, more traditional: a ring. In reality, the 22.76-carat oval diamond, color D and VVS1 clarity, is suspended in a thin flush mount with a micro-pavé on platinum. In this case the maximum estimate is 3.5 million. A 2017 with records for Christie’s

2017 was a golden year for Christie’s jewels, with a burst of records ♦
The end of the year is when the balance sheets of the past 12 months are made. It is a delicate moment and not always (or, better, often) this analysis is made public. As far as the jewelery world is concerned, this applies even more. A veil of confidentiality always hides the affairs of the great Maison and of the players in the sector. But not in one case: when business is good. Indeed, super good. This is the time, as regards 2017, of Christie’s, the great auction house also involved in the jewelry business. Christie’s, in fact, has made public the balance of the jewelry auctions that, the numbers confirm, is really flattering: 24 years as a leader of auctions of jewels. In fact, in 2017, Christie’s sold jewels for 556.7 million dollars. Among other things, online sales are also up (8.9 million), even if the lion’s share is still traditional auctions (547.8 million).
In this complex there are also a series of records, Christie’s proudly claims. For example, the world record for an Art Nouveau and Art Deco collection of a single owner, sold 100%, for a total of 12.4 million. Or the world record for an impeccable D-color diamond, achieved with the The Art of de Grisogono necklace, sold for 33.7 million dollars. Another success was the record auction price per carat reached for a pink diamond achieved with The Pink Promise (32.2 million dollars) and, to remain always in the same shade of diamonds, the record for the most historic diamond ever sold auctioned with Le Grand Mazarin (14.4 million).
“From the historic sale of The Rockefeller Emerald to Le Grand Mazarin and from de Grisogono’s 163.41 carat D Flawless diamond to the Pink Promise, 2017 has been a stellar year for jewelry at Christie’s. Nine new world record prices were achieved at our sales worldwide driven by intense competition from collectors who bid at the highest levels for important diamonds, rare gems and jewels, and superb objects. We
also saw immense growth in our Online sales which encouraged clients to enjoy the auction experience at all price points. As we move into 2018, our global team of jewelry specialists look forward to bringing to market the very best jewels for our clients.””said Rahul Kadakia, international jewelry manager, Christie’s. Who, probably, hopes to do an encore in 2018. Federico Graglia

Graff in blue, Christie’s golden year

With two twin blue diamonds from Graff it closes a golden year for Christie’s ♦ ︎
In view of Christmas, the wallet opens more easily. Especially if the expense is to buy Magnificent Jewels. So the Christie’s auction in New York ended with a total sales of $ 62.5 million. 88% of the lots were awarded and 85% by value. The top piece turned out to be a ring by Graff, 3.36 and 2.71 carat Superb Twin-Stone Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond, which reached $ 12.5 million. Two blue twin diamonds, in fact, are quite rare.
Along with the Graff ring, pieces of Buccellati, Bulgari, Cartier, David Webb, Jar, Van Cleef & Arpels and others were sold. Christie’s also points out that even unique jewelry signed by artists, which are rarely appreciated at auction, have been well received. But pieces of Charles Loloma, Georges Fouquet and Raymond Templier were sold above the starting estimates. The auction chronicle (held on December 6) also records the success of the sold private collections, such as Property From The Collection by Senator Jacob K. Javits and Marian B. Javits, the jewels that belonged to Hank Greenberg, and the collection of Dwight D. and Mamie Eisenhower. In short, a gold closure for Christie’s vintage, back from the sale of emblematic pieces such as The Art of de Grisogono, Creation 1, the largest impeccable D-color diamond ever auctioned, which set a new record world auction for 33.7 million, or Le Grand Mazarin, a light pink diamond of 19.07 carats sold for 14.4 million, and the sale in Hong Kong of The Pink Promise for 32.1 million, world record price per carat of a pink diamond. Federico Graglia

Angola say goodbye to de Grisogono

/

The decisions of the government of Angola intersect with the fate of the Maison de Grisogono ♦ ︎
The jewels are precious. They are an investment as well as an object to wear. So it is not surprising if, occasionally, the economic aspect dominates the aesthetic: in short, sometimes the vile money shines more than a diamond.
This is the case, for example, of the story told by the Bloomberg agency and which concerns the Geneva Maison de Grisogono. It is learned, in fact, that the minority shareholder of the company founded by Fawaz Gruosi is the government of Angola, and in particular Sodiam, a subsidiary of Endiama, the national mining company of the African country. Sodiam, therefore, has announced that it will sell its shareholding in de Grisogono. The decision has nothing to do with de Grisogono’s activity, but is dictated by “reasons of public interest and legality”. According to the American specialized website National Jeweler, de Grisogono is controlled by Sindika Dokolo, husband of Isabel Dos Santos, who is the daughter of former Angolan president Jose Eduardo dos Santos as well as being the richest woman in Africa, according to Forbes magazine.
Change of regime
In short, the newly elected Angolan president Joao Lourenco would like cut Angola from the commercial interests of his predecessor’s family. In fact, it has already removed Isabel Dos Santo from the summit of Sonangol, which is the powerful state oil company of Angola. The story was commented on National Jeweler by de Grisogono’s marketing director, Gianluca Maina, who sent a clarification via e-mail: «After a recent change of leadership, Sodiam, minority shareholder, announced plans to exit as investor in De Grisogono. This decision will have no impact on our majority shareholders who have reconfirmed their continued commitment to our brand and its future and we continue to have strong financial support “.
Public enemy
But the serenity of Fawaz Gruosi risks being disturbed by another obstacle: the negative campaign that leads the gem hunter Yianni Melas from some months. In essence, the explorer claims that de Grisogono does not sufficiently help African populations and for this reason he has implemented a series of protest actions against the Maison de Genève. For exemple, on the occasion of Christie’s auction sale of The Art of de Grisogono, an exceptional necklace with a 163.41 carat D diamond, extracted in Angola. Not even the announcement that 1% of the sale would be donated to Fundação Brilhante, an organization that promotes social change in the areas surrounding the mines in Angola, has been enough to appease Melas. Pink Promise sold for 31.9 million

/

The Pink Promise diamond touches Christie’s record at Hong Kong ♦ ︎
There is pink diamond and pink diamond. While the 37-carat Raj Pink was not sold in Geneva, the smallest The Pink Promise, a 14.93 carat pink fancy vivid, was beaten by Christie’s for $ 31.9 million at Magnificent Jewels auction Hong Kong. The price is very close to the world record for a single carat of a pink diamond: $ 2.13 million (the record is almost 2.15 million per carat that a buyer has paid for a 5-carat diamond vivid diamond at a Christie’s auction in Hong Kong in December 2009).
The diamond has a curious history: it was bought by a stone merchant, Stephen Silver, in 2013 and cut again to highlight its color; it weighed 16.10 carats. The operation, very delicate, was successful. Silver (a name that marks a destiny) is already busy with particularly precious diamonds, such as The Cranberry, fancy red violet, The Million Dollar Pumpkin, a vivid orange, and a fancy blue vivid diamond. The Hong Kong auction, in addition to the highly regarded in Asia jade pieces, has also won jewelry from important Maison, such as Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels. Here are some pieces sold. The twentieth century at auction

Art Nouveau and Art Deco Jewelry by the best designers at Geneva auction with Christie’s  ♦︎
There are many vintage jewelry enthusiasts who are waiting for the grand auction opportunity to see closely pieces that have been closed in drawers and safes for decades. One of these occasions is November 13 in Geneva. Among the Magnificent Jewels from a European collection, there are on sale special Art Noveau and Art Deco pieces of particular beauty. Fine stuff, to collectors, for lovers of jewelery art. But they are also very precious pieces: the overall estimate of this collection exceeds 3 million euros.
The jewels are the result of a collection that has been completed in 30 years by a couple (especially her) who is passionate about this kind of piece, especially of the first half of the twentieth century. The names of the artists and jewelers in the collection are those found in the goldsmith’s history books: René Lalique (50 lots, a record), Henri Vever or Leopold Gautrait, or Georges Fouquet, Raymond Templier, Cartier, Van Cleef and Arpels: in all, 110 jewels. Among them is the collection of jewels signed by Lalique, a designer who has created his best and most important pieces of Art Nouveau and has become a myth that continues today. Federico Graglia
