Meduse: bijoux and taboo in Paris

Taboos and Medusa: 400 exciting jewels on exhibition in Paris ♦
There is nothing more exciting than breaking a taboo. And perhaps this is why Paris dedicates an exhibition to those jewels inspired by the charm of the forbidden. The exhibition is called Medusa: Bijoux et tabous. The mythological Medusa, woman with snakes in place of her hair, had the power to petrify anyone who looked at her. In short, she was herself a taboo. On the subject, over the centuries, writers, painters and jewelers have practiced.
Feminine and Forbidden, Luxury and Diversity: The exhibition organized at the Paris Museum of modern Art presents about 400 pieces of artists such as Meret Oppenheim, Man Ray, Calder, Dali, Picasso, Fabrice Gygi, Thomas Hirschhorn , Danny McDonald. An more, designers such as René Lalique, Anni Albers, Line Vautrin, Tony Duquette Bless, Gijs Bakker, Karl Fristch Sophie Hanagarth, Suzanne Belperron René Boivin, Victoire de Castellane and of course hewelers such as Cartier, Pomellato, Van Cleef & Arpels, and so on. But also a fake crown signed by Vivienne Westwood. Jewelery is divided into four areas (identity, value, body, and rite) with a rich program. There are also events and performances. Federico Graglia

Jewelry, someone loves Calder

In London, an exhibition of Calder’s jewelry, sculptor famous for its mobile works.
Sculptures that move: it was the specialty of one of the great artists of the twentieth century, Alexander Calder. But few know (perhaps) that Calder had also produced jewelry. And his art is now (September 27-November 5) the subject of an exhibition at Louisa Guinness Gallery in London. The exhibition is titled The Boldness of Calder and features some of the artist’s sculptures-jewelry from collections around the world. But the jewels, even if designed by an artist, are still jewelry: and so the exhibition also includes photographs showing women wearing pieces of Calder, as Simone de Beauvoir, Peggy Guggenheim, Georgia O’Keeffe. Often on the jewelry, there are also the initials of the customer. There are earrings, bracelets, necklaces, brooches, hair clips handmade, obviously with not exactly traditional forms, often quite large. The materials most used are silver, or brass. Glass-effect with Ron Arad

A gallery in London that is specializes in artist’s jewels: the Louisa Guinness Gallery. Space is the first dedicated exclusively to jewelery designed by names such as Anish Kapoor, Sophia Vari, Claude Lalanne and Mariko Mori, in addition to the last century masters such as Picasso, Calder, Man Ray and Fontana. For example, in case you are passing through London (or maybe you live there) know that until April 22 there are showcasing the jewels of Ron Arad. The exhibition is called Rocks! and just look at the collection of the artist, architect and designer to understand why. They are unique works or limited editions: necklaces, bracelets and earrings are made of silicon, laser sintered polyamide, quartz, gold and silver. They look like glass, but they are much simpler to handle or (maybe) to wear. Certainly not go unnoticed. Despite the appearance of the jewelry, silicon is soft and flexible to the touch: looks sharp glass, but instead it is not. Wear a necklace or bracelet has a strange effect and, above all, attracts attention (worried) of who encountered. But in the case, reassure them: the jewels are amazing, but absolutely harmless. The masterpieces of London

Art on canvas, bronze and also gold and gems: the jewels were part of the sixth edition of Masterpiece London fair (but the definition of fair is too narrow). Available to fans there were works from different backgrounds, but all carefully selected, more by 150 galleries from around the world. Works on display, but also available for purchase. Including jewelry. The offer was the most varied. Alongside established brands such as Van Cleef & Arpels, there were the new generation of jewelry, as Suzanne Syz or Brazilian Jojo Grima. And opposed to precious antique jewelry were presented to visitors Londoners also jewelry made by a number of artists, mostly Italians, between the fifties and the seventies. A few names: Gio Pomodoro, African, Ettore Sottsass, Pietro Consagra, Annigoni and Umberto Mastroianni. Here are a large number of images and a selection of the best pieces, for those who could not attend the exhibition in London. Federico Graglia
