Three new Breitling chronographs. This is the Premier B21 Chronograph Tourbillon 42 declined in three versions: Léon Breitling, Gaston Breitling and Willy Breitling, i.e. the names of the founders of the Swiss Maison. The tourbillon complication is the centerpiece of a new trio of exceptional wristwatches.

The Premier B21 Chronograph Tourbillon 42 is the perfect expression of Breitling design. In the tourbillon, you see the mechanism at all times. It is the beating heart of the watch.

A tourbillon houses the balance wheel, balance spring and escapement in a rotating cage, the entire mechanism in perpetual motion. This action corrects, and effectively cancels, the force of gravity, which affects the accuracy of a watch differently in different positions. Breitling worked hand in hand with special movement maker Manufacture La Joux-Perret to develop the B21 movement, which takes the unusual step of combining a tourbillon with a chronograph to make this trio of watches with a Breitling soul.

Precious metals and an open domed case back characterize the Premier B21 Chronograph Tourbillon 42. The Léon Breitling features a solid 18K red gold case with a silver dial, alligator strap. The Gaston Breitling pairs a solid 18k white gold case with an anthracite dial and black alligator strap. The Willy Breitling is solid platinum with a blue dial and black alligator strap. Each watch features the stylized square pushers and Arabic numerals that are distinctive of the Premier line.
The star though is the tourbillon at the 12 o’clock position. The open sapphire crystal case back is domed to allow for the full appreciation of the B21 movement, where the oscillating weight and tourbillon reverse appear in contrasting 18K gold.

Three new Breitlings in the high-end watchmaking range. Each of the three variants was inspired by one of Breitling’s founders. The Premier collection was conceived by Willy Breitling Conceived while the world was still involved in the Second World War. Wristwatches were tools used by pilots, navigators and engineers to do their job and they had to (and still have to) be reliable tools. But Willy Breitling also tried to elevate the wristwatch to an elegant object. The Premier line, launched in 1943, kept all the function of its chronographs, but enriched them in form. The Swiss Maison is now launching the Premier B21 Chronograph Tourbillon 42. A tourbillon complication is the centerpiece of a new trio of wristwatches.

Precious metals and an open domed caseback characterize the Premier B21 Chronograph Tourbillon 42, which is available in three variants, each dedicated to the founders of Breitling. The Léon Breitling features a solid 18K red gold case with a silver dial and a semi-gloss brown alligator leather strap. The Gaston Breitling combines an 18K white gold case with an anthracite dial and a black alligator strap. The Willy Breitling, on the other hand, is a solid platinum vision with an admiral blue dial and black alligator strap. Each watch features the stylized square pushers and Arabic numerals that are the hallmarks of the Premier line. Their symmetrical dial design, interplay of numerals and tonal colorways perfectly balance the undisputed star of the show, the tourbillon, which takes center stage at 12 o’clock. The open sapphire crystal caseback is domed to allow for full appreciation of the B21 movement, where the oscillating weight and tourbillon back appear in contrasting 18K gold.

The release of the Premier B21 Chronograph Tourbillon 42 marks the return of the Founders Squad, made up of Léon, Gaston and Willy Breitling, who come to life in the new Premier Tourbillon campaign. The three generations have left their legacy in the brand and their imprint can still be felt in every aspect of these watches. Léon is the craftsman, whose work sets a new standard of precision. Gaston is the innovator, whose design has become what we know as the modern chronograph. And Willy is the man of impeccable taste, who introduced the wristwatch from purpose to style. The Premier B21 Chronograph Tourbillon 42 is for those who love mechanical watchmaking.

Goodbye Baselworld, Gucci throws in the towel

Another bad blow for Baselworld: Gucci also leaves. At the Basel fair, scheduled this year from April 30 to May 5, the brand of the Kering group will not be there. And it will leave two empty spaces, given that last year the brand occupied separate exhibition spaces in Hall 1.0, one for jewelry and the other for watches.

Gucci therefore extends the list of discontented brands, in particular about the choice to postpone the date of the fair, as well as the costs associated with the exhibition set-up: restaurants and hotels in Basel have the reputation of having prohibitive prices. And, while the presence of Rolex and the brands of the LVMH group is confirmed, companies such as Breitling, Swatch, de Grisogono, Pasquale Bruni, Jacobs & Co, as well as many smaller brands, have given up.

Gucci refused to explains the reason for the decision. Baselworld, in any case, has admitted that the idea of postponing the fair to may to link it to Sihh, which in the meantime has changed its name to Watches & Wonders Geneva, an event dedicated to haute horlogerie, will not be replicated: in 2021 Baselworld it should return in late March or early April. But the verb should be used in the conditional.

Of course, the Basel fair is unlikely to return to the 2,000 exhibitors a decade ago. And it is even more difficult to say whether it will be the world center of watchmaking again: Baselworld, in fact, was primarily a showcase of Swiss watches until British jewelry designer Stephen Webster began exhibiting in 1999. In the following 12 years he was followed by many other brands, before a decline began that, perhaps, is not yet finished.

Baselworld changes date again: from 2021 it will be held the first week of April, anticipates Michel Loris-Melikoff ♦ ︎

The watch hands in 2021 will be moved back three weeks. However, this is not an original interpretation of summer time. Instead, it’s a turnaround at Baselworld, the big watch and jewelery fair held in the spring in Basel. Baselworld is a point of reference for the great companies of timepieces, but also of jewels. The fair, however, has been experiencing a crisis for years that has reduced the number of participants. To try to reverse the trend, last year the managing director, Michel Loris-Melikoff, announced that by 2020 the date of the exhibition would be postponed to 30 April (closing on 5 May), more than a month after the usual period in which the event takes place, that is in mid-March.

The change of date was decided to create a synergy with Sihh, the watchmaking fair that until 2019 took place in late January. In 2020, in fact, the Sihh will be held from 27 to 29 April, with the stated objective of concentrating the trip for buyers in a single trip to Switzerland. However, the slippage has created discontent and problems especially at many Italian jewelery houses, as noted by gioiellis.com.

Many jewelers believe that the date set for Baselworld creates several problems: it is too close to the summer holidays and creates delays between the receipt of orders and the production of the collections. And even among the watch manufacturers there was no shortage of protests: Breitling, one of those members of the Baselworld committee, left Basel, while the LVMH group, which was present in Geneva alongside the Sihh, moved its event to Dubai .

That is why, therefore, Michel Loris-Melikoff confided to the specialized magazine WatchPro that from 2021 the Baselworld fair will be moved again, this time three weeks before. So presumably in 2021 it will be held in the first week of April. A convincing date for jewelery companies? “It’s all very complicated,” the manager confessed. And if it is for the fair, let alone the participating companies.

Rocca 1794 at Malpensa airport

To receive foreign tourists (but also Italian) at the airport of Milan Malpensa there is now also Rocca 1794, chain of Italian jewelery and watches of high level (Damiani Group). The brand has in fact opened a new boutique, which adds to the recent opening of the store Bologna and the restyling of the store in Milan’s Piazza Duomo.
