Jewels in support of Ukraine. A sign of solidarity, combined with creativity, comes from the Dutch designer Bibi van der Velden. In her Alligator collection, the designer has added a pair of earrings in the colors of the Ukrainian flag. The earrings are made of 18K yellow gold. The body of the alligator-earring is composed of a blue topaz and a yellow citrine carved. His eyes, with one blue and one yellow sapphire, are also in nuance. Furthermore, the earring can also be worn as a pendant. Not only that: the proceeds from the sale of the earring will be donated to Unicef.

From trendy designers to vintage jewelry from great Maison. Auverture, the website founded by one of the most refined creative women in high jewelery, Bibi Van Der Velden, surprisingly opened the doors to a new genre of proposals. The marketplace, in fact, has inaugurated a section dedicated to vintage jewelry, with pieces also signed by brands such as Bulgari, Cartier, Tiffany or Val Cleef & Arpels. They are jewels made in the last century and put back into circulation to be worn again. It is the same kind of jewelry found on sites like 1stdibs, but also, with due proportions, at Sotheby’s or Christie’s. And it is a sign that high quality jewels maintain their value over time, because they continue to have a market.

That Auverture proposing these jewels, however, surprised those who considered Bibi Van Der Velden’s site as a space dedicated exclusively to the most innovative contemporary designers, such as Fernando Jorge, Ana Khouri, Bia Tambelli, Venyx, Alice Cicolini, Nikos Koulis , just to name a few. With the support of vintage jewelry, however, Auverture is now able to meet the requests of collectors and design enthusiasts of the past.

Six other jewelry designers have decided to help the Lebanese population after the blast in the port of Beirut that caused over 200 deaths, 7,000 injuries and severe damage to much of the city’s infrastructure. The jewelers are all independent and linked to the Auverture website, founded by Bibi van der Velden. Some of them also have Lebanese roots, such as Gaelle Khouri, Noor Fares and Selim Mouzannar. Together with them there are also Daniela Villegas, Alice Cicolini and Bibi van der Velden.

The idea is quite original: a lottery that gives away six jewels. Virtual tickets to participate in the lottery cost 50 euros, dollars or pounds. We must hurry, however, because they can only be purchased until August 16th. The winners of the lottery will be chosen on August 17th with a draw. and can be purchased via a special page on the Auverture website.

The jewels donated are of different types, but among them there is one that is particularly in tune with the Lebanese tragedy. According to quantum mechanics, the incredibly small things (the elementary particles that make up everyday reality) have some analogies with the incredibly large, such as the behavior of black holes in space. And, again by analogy, Bibi van der Velden connects the distant galaxies of space with the extremely ancient and terrestrial, like the ivory of the mammoths. The result is the Galaxy collection, where planets, stars and zodiac rotate together in a creative whirlwind.

The collection, like other by Dutch designer, is suspended between past and future. For example, it includes a ring designed like a globe created from a 60,000-year-old mammoth tusk, which evokes a planet that rotates on its axis. The sphere is suspended by motifs with stars and is set with opals, blue sapphires and white diamonds, hanging on an 18-karat yellow gold stem.

For another ring, the designer even created a miniature universe, with a boulder opal in the center chosen specifically for its unique colors and inclusions, which evokes the appearance of a swirling galaxy. Around the opal are small planets, represented by Tahitian pearls: this one can rotate in its gold setting. The ring is designed in 18-carat pink and yellow gold and set with white diamonds, golden stars, blue sapphires and green tsavorites. In addition, the exact color of the opal stone can also be customized to order.

Bibi van der Velden has become famous for jewelry fans who love innovation also for the use of unusual materials such as mammoth tusks or scarab wings. But also for a subtle irony that surrounds a very innovative design. These two qualities, irony and design, are found in the Monkey collection. In fact, the collection is presented as follows: “Monkeys are among the most entertaining and intelligent animals on Earth, representing fun and flexibility. We never get enough of these fascinating species and their beloved bananas and we could not think of a better inspiration for our new jewelry designs.” In short, monkeys and bananas are really cheerful elements.
But you should not underestimate the more technical aspect: the bananas are made by working lemon quartz, the palm leaves are of green tsavorite, while the monkeys are in 18-carat rose gold and silver, with brown and white diamonds. Prices: almost 3000 euros for the simplest earrings, over 6000 for pendants with bananas up to over 11000 euros for the ring. In any case, luxury and fun can be together: it’s a good idea.
